My fingers trembled as I signed the pre-medical application form. The watercolor brushes on my desk stared back at me like abandoned friends. I’m Lora, an 18-year-old who secretly drew brain diagrams on napkins while classmates drew cartoons. “Art feeds the soul but starves the body,” Mom always said. Her words haunted (萦绕) me as my biology textbooks slowly buried my drawing pads.
Then came the school career fair that changed everything. Dr. Eleanor Whitman from Harvard asked us to list our “hidden skills”. My hand shook as I wrote “observing details”—something I’d learned from painting flower petals (花瓣). “That’s medical research’s most needed skill!” she exclaimed, sharing how a student turned microbiology notes into textbook illustrations. My lab partner whispered, “Remember our photosynthesis (光合作用) comic?” For the first time, my two worlds didn’t feel so separate.
The real surprise came during hospital volunteering. Watching surgeries, I noticed something—the steady hands of doctors reminded me of my brushwork. When a boy struggled to describe his pain, I drew a fire-breathing dragon on his cast. “You made medicine speak,” the nurse said. Slowly, my drawing pads filled with cells that looked like colored-glass art and X-rays arranged like abstract paintings.
Mr. Dawson, our career counselor, helped connect these dots. On his whiteboard, my medical knowledge and art skills overlapped in a bright yellow circle labeled “Medical Illustration”. He showed me job listings I never knew existed—graphic designers for science apps, 3D modelers for anatomy (解剖) classes. “Your ‘impractical’ skill makes you stand out,” he said, pointing to my dragon drawing now used in pain management workshops.
Today, my microscope and paintbrushes share the same desk. The same hands that once hesitated between them now create 3D models of viruses for vaccine education. Sometimes I teach young patients to draw their feelings instead of describing them. My story isn’t about heart and reality canceling each other out—they just multiply possibilities.
4. What can be inferred about Lora from paragraph 1?
A. She had given up the hobby of drawing.
B. She was excited about studying medicine.
C. She felt torn between art and medical study.
D. She regretted not practicing painting earlier.
5. Dr. Eleanor thought of Lora’s “hidden skills” as ______.
A. a plus B. a leisure C. a distraction D. a burden
6. How did Lora’s hospital experience influence her?
A. It helped develop her surgical skills.
B. It directed her toward doctor training.
C. It boosted her enthusiasm for abstract art.
D. It convinced her of art’s role in healthcare.
7. What message does the author want to convey?
A. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
B. A picture is worth a thousand words.
C. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
D. No skill is ever wasted.

While “chaos gardening” became a viral social media trend in 2023, its core philosophy of letting nature lead has come to stay — it’s a return to time-honored ecological gardening principles, reimagined for modern homeowners. Unlike strictly planned, pesticide-reliant gardens, this approach rejects inflexible design, instead sowing a diverse mix of seeds and embracing the unpredictability of natural growth.
Far from mere “messy gardening”, the practice is rooted in ecological science: a diverse plant community creates layered habitats that support pollinators (授粉者), soil microbes, and native wildlife. As climate anxiety and biodiversity loss grow, chaos gardening has emerged as an accessible solution for ordinary people to contribute to ecosystem restoration. It eliminates the need for artificial chemicals, reduces water pollution, and captures carbon. As Dr. Rebecca Hartman, an ecologist at Washington University, puts it, “What looks like randomness to the untrained eye is actually a complicated web of ecological relationships. Chaos gardening taps into that complexity instead of fighting it.”
Critics often dismiss it as unmanaged neglect (忽视), but successful chaos gardening requires intentionality, not inaction. The key lies in selecting native, locally adapted seed mixes: non-native invasive species can outcompete native plants, disturbing local ecosystems, while carefully chosen native plants provide sustained food and shelter for local pollinators. Results are naturally variable — some gardens bloom into lively wildflower fields, others evolve into food-producing landscapes, making each space a unique ecological experiment. Landscape designer Marcus Chen, who has applied chaos gardening principles to over fifty residential projects, notes, “People are surprised when I tell them that a ‘wild’ garden often takes more thoughtful planning than a traditional one. You’re not abandoning care — you’re redirecting it toward the right plant choices and then stepping back.”
For beginners, it offers a low-pressure entry to gardening, free from the pressure of perfection. It’s more than a gardening style; it’s a mindset shift, inviting people to observe, adapt, and coexist with nature, rather than control it. In an era of environmental crisis, chaos gardening turns small, personal outdoor spaces into agents of ecological hope.
8. How does the author present the core idea of chaos gardening in the first paragraph?
A. By listing its benefits. B. By introducing its origin.
C. By showing its popularity. D. By describing its practices.
9. What does Dr. Hartman say about chaos gardening?
A. It restores the ecological balance. B. It upsets ecological relationships.
C. It employs ecological networks. D. It reduces ecological complexity.
10. Why does the author quote Marcus Chen?
A. To highlight intentional efforts. B. To support critics’ opinions.
C. To advise growing native seeds. D. To show the benefits of wild gardens.
11. What can be the suitable title for the text?
A. Messy Ways, Clear Results B. Chaos Planted, Hope Grown
C. Wild Looks, Wise Planning D. Nature Leading, Diversity Lost
D
Since Francis Galton coined the phrase “nature vs nurture (环境因素)” 150 years ago, the debate about what shapes us has been central to the human sciences.
Today, however, a new scientific field is set to reshape the debate — not by proving one side right or declaring a tie, but rather by revealing they were never against each other. Through this new perspective, nature and nurture are not even entirely distinguishable, because genes (基因) and environment don’t work separately; they influence each other and even create each other.
The new field is called sociogenomics (社会基因组学), an integration of behavioral science and genetics. Despite being a relatively new area of study, it has the potential to rewrite a great deal of what we think we know about who we are and how we got that way.
Genes don’t affect who we become just on their own, inside our bodies — they work, in part, by shaping the environments we look for or produce. At other times, the nature-nurture feedback circle may be more pernicious. It’s no surprise that terrible setbacks — the loss of a job, the end of a marriage — can cause people to fall into depression. Surprisingly, people with a higher genetic risk of depression are more likely to meet such misfortunes, which worsen their condition. This does not mean it is their fault. It only proves our life experience and social support are closely connected.
Here is the part of this research that really blows me away. The research suggests that your partner’s genes influence your chance of depression almost one third as much as your own genes do. It also shows that a small number of students with a genetic tendency to smoke can cause a rapid rise in smoking rates across an entire grade, even among strangers.
Genes alone aren’t enough to determine these outcomes and neither is environment. Nature and nurture both shape each other, with nature influencing the way we experience nurture and nurture influencing the way our nature expresses itself. The more opportunities and information the environment provides — the more varied environments become — the greater the influence that genetic variation has in sorting us into different categories.
Nature and nurture aren’t separate forces — they’re endlessly circling back on each other.
12. Before sociogenomics appeared, what was widely believed?
A. genes and environment functioned separately
B. nature and nurture could not be told apart
C. the environment shaped our personalities
D. nature played a bigger role than nurture
13. The underlined word “pernicious” (paragraph 4) is closest in meaning to “______”
A. disastrous B. common C. meaningless D. questionable
14. What shocked the writer most in the research is that ______.
A. our genes may be changed by people around us
B. people with same genes are more likely to interact with each other
C. nature influences our behavior as much as nurture
D. the genes of other people around us can affect the environment we experience
15. Which of the following pictures correctly illustrates how nature and nurture make us who we are?
A. B. C. D.
We live in an age when short dramas (短剧) slip easily into the gaps of daily life. ____16____ Like quick flashes of light, they deliver instant excitement and clearly defined emotions. In just a few minutes, a conflict appears, rises, and disappears, offering immediate satisfaction with little demand on our time. In a fast-paced world, they have become a natural companion.
____17____ Short dramas rush from scene to scene, leaving little room for thought to settle. Characters may seem vivid, but they remain shallow — more like sketches than true portraits. Problems are solved before they are fully experienced. Viewers are entertained, but seldom challenged. Gradually, watching turns into a habit of easy consumption rather than active reflection.
The human mind is not built for endless speed. Beneath the desire for quick pleasure lies a deeper need — to understand, to feel, and to think. We long for meaning that unfolds slowly, emotions that stay with us, and stories that reflect our own struggles. ____18____.
A film invites us to slow down. When the screen darkens, time seems to stretch. Scenes are allowed to breathe. Silence begins to speak. Characters grow through choices, mistakes, and moments of waiting. Meaning is not delivered all at once but revealed gently, like light at dawn. Films do not rush viewers forward. ____19____
Think of the white feather drifting in Forrest Gump. Recall Andy Dufresne standing in the rain in The Shawshank Redemption, arms open, finally free. ____20____ Beyond the fast stream of short dramas lies the deep river of cinema — quiet, powerful, and always worth entering.
A. Their primary appeal lies in speed.
B. Yet what comes quickly often fades just as quickly.
C. But not all people experience it in the same way.
D. These films are produced to offer quick relaxation.
E. Such moments stay with us long after the screen falls silent.
F. Instead, they draw us inward, asking for thought beyond the moment.
G. It is this quiet hunger that draws us toward the wider world of cinema.

My name is Mae. I’ve always been passionate about exploring and solving problems — whether fixing a broken toy or figuring out how a phone app works. This led me to join our school’s Coding (编程) Club. In our first lesson, Ms. Davis told us that coding is more than writing lines of code. It is about using technology to make life easier for others.
“Your project,” she announced in class one day, “is to create a simple app that solves a real-life problem.” “You have one week to prepare,” she added gently, hoping this would give us enough time to find inspiration and finish the project.
The challenge stayed with me as I walked to my neighbor Mrs. Thompson’s apartment after school. She had invited me for tea, as she often did on Tuesdays. Mrs. Thompson was kind and cheerful, but lately she had been a little forgetful, often misplacing her keys or repeating the same story twice without realizing it. When I arrived, she was in the kitchen.
“Mae! Good timing,” she greeted me warmly, and then stopped, glancing at the kettle. “Did I already boil water for tea?”
I checked the kettle — it was still warm. We laughed about it as I poured water, and soon we were chatting. Our conversation turned to her weekly book club with friends. Mrs. Thompson smiled, talking about her two old friends. Mr. Brown arrived late for the game, and Mrs. Smith failed to bring her glasses twice. “We’re quite a group,” she said.
Then her expression grew thoughtful. “We manage, of course. But sometimes I think wouldn’t it be nice if something simply reminds us? Take medicine. Water the plants. Friday for book club.” She tapped her head with a soft laugh.
Her words sank in. At that moment, an idea formed in my mind. As I stood up to leave, I smiled mysteriously, “Give me a few days, and I’ll bring you a little surprise.”
“Oh? I’ll try not to forget that,” she laughed.

C 5. A 6. D 7. D

Her words haunted me as my biology textbooks slowly buried my drawing pads.
(哈佛大学的埃莉诺·惠特曼博士让我们列出自己的“隐藏技能”。当我写下“观察细节”时,我的手在颤抖——这是我从画花瓣中学到的。“这是医学研究最需要的技能!”她大声说道,并分享了一个学生如何将微生物学笔记变成教科书插图的故事)”可知,Dr. Eleanor认为Lora的“隐藏技能”是一个优势。故选A。
根据第三段“Watching surgeries, I noticed something—the steady hands of doctors reminded me of my brushwork. When a boy struggled to describe his pain, I drew a fire-breathing dragon on his cast. “You made medicine speak,” the nurse said. (在观看手术时,我注意到了一些事情——医生稳定的手让我想起了我的绘画技巧。当一个男孩难以描述他的疼痛时,我在他的石膏上画了一条喷火的龙。护士说:你让医学有了声音)”可知,Lora在医院的经历让她确信艺术在医疗保健中有作用。故选D。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“Today, my microscope and paintbrushes share the same desk. The same hands that once hesitated between them now create 3D models of viruses for vaccine education. Sometimes I teach young patients to draw their feelings instead of describing them. My story isn’t about heart and reality canceling each other out—they just multiply possibilities. (如今,我的显微镜和画笔共用一张桌子。曾经在它们之间犹豫不决的手,现在为疫苗教育制作病毒的 3D 模型。有时我教年轻的病人画出他们的感受,而不是描述它们。我的故事不是关于内心和现实相互抵消——它们只是增加了可能性)”可知,文章主要通过作者的经历证明了拥有两种技能(艺术和医学知识)可以带来更多可能性。所以文章传递了“技多不压身”的主旨。故选D。
C
D 9. C 10. A 11. C

A. B. C. D.
A 13. A 14. D 15. B
根据第二段中的“Through this new perspective, nature and nurture are not even entirely distinguishable, because genes (基因) and environment don’t work separately; they influence each other and even create each other.(通过这个新视角,先天与后天无法完全区分,因为基因和环境并非各自独立运作,二者互相影响甚至互相造就。)”
根据第四段划线单词后的“It’s no surprise that terrible setbacks — the loss of a job, the end of a marriage — can cause people to fall into depression. Surprisingly, people with a higher genetic risk of depression are more likely to meet such misfortunes, which worsen their condition.(遭遇失业、婚姻破裂这类重大挫折后陷入抑郁不足为奇。令人意外的是,携带抑郁高遗传风险的人,反而更容易碰上这类不幸变故,而变故又会进一步加重他们的抑郁症状。)”可知,这种先天后天的恶性循环带来恶劣后果,因此pernicious意为“灾难性的、有害的”,与“disastrous”的意义相近。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“The research suggests that your partner’s genes influence your chance of depression almost one third as much as your own genes do. It also shows that a small number of students with a genetic tendency to smoke can cause a rapid rise in smoking rates across an entire grade, even among strangers.(研究表明:伴侣的基因对个体患上抑郁症概率的影响,约为自身基因影响程度的三分之一。研究还发现,少数天生有吸烟遗传倾向的学生,会致使整个年级的吸烟率快速攀升,就连原本互不相识的学生也会受此影响开始抽烟。)”可知,作者震惊的是身边人的基因会影响自身所处的环境与人生经历。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Genes alone aren’t enough to determine these outcomes and neither is environment. Nature and nurture both shape each other, with nature influencing the way we experience nurture and nurture influencing the way our nature expresses itself. The more opportunities and information the environment provides — the more varied environments become — the greater the influence that genetic variation has in sorting us into different categories.(单凭基因无法决定这些结果,环境同样不能。先天禀赋与后天养育相互塑造:先天特质影响人感知后天环境的方式,后天环境反过来影响先天基因的表达。环境所能提供的机遇与信息越丰富、环境类型越多元,基因变异在使人产生个体分化上起到的作用就越大。)”以及最后一段“Nature and nurture aren’t separate forces — they’re endlessly circling back on each other.(先天和后天互相塑造,二者并非独立力量,不断循环相互作用。)”
A 17. B 18. G 19. F 20. E
后文“Like quick flashes of light, they deliver instant excitement and clearly defined emotions. In just a few minutes, a conflict appears, rises, and disappears, offering immediate satisfaction with little demand on our time. In a fast-paced world, they have become a natural companion.(它们如同一闪而过的光点,带来瞬间的兴奋和清晰的情感表达。短短几分钟内,冲突便出现、激荡,又迅速消散,让我们在几乎不耗费时间的情况下获得即时满足。在这个快节奏的世界里,它们已成为一种天然的陪伴。)”全在描述短剧“快”的特点:像闪电般转瞬即逝、几分钟内完成冲突起承转合、耗时少且能带来即时满足。A选项“Their primary appeal lies in speed.(它们的主要吸引力在于速度。)”中的“speed”与后文“quick flashes”“in just a few minutes”“immediate satisfaction”形成完美呼应,总领本段核心 —— 短剧的核心吸引力在于速度。
第一段讲短剧的优势,下文“Short dramas rush from scene to scene, leaving little room for thought to settle. Characters may seem vivid, but they remain shallow — more like sketches than true portraits.( 短剧从一幕跳到另一幕,几乎没有空间留给人们沉思。角色看似生动,却仍显得肤浅——更像是速写而非真实肖像。)”转而批判其弊端。本空作为第二段首句,需要一个转折过渡句,承接上文的“快”,引出下文“快带来的负面影响”。B选项“Yet what comes quickly often fades just as quickly.(然而,来得快的东西往往也很快就会消逝。)”
上文“Beneath the desire for quick pleasure lies a deeper need — to understand, to feel, and to think. We long for meaning that unfolds slowly, emotions that stay with us, and stories that reflect our own struggles.(渴望快速愉悦的背后,隐藏着更深层的需求——去理解、去感受、去思考。我们渴望缓慢展开的意义,渴望长久留恋的情感,渴望能映照出自身挣扎的故事。)”指出人类内心深处对深度内容的渴望(理解、感受、思考),下文“A film invites us to slow down. When the screen darkens, time seems to stretch.(电影邀请我们放慢脚步。当银幕变暗,时间仿佛变得延展。)”开始介绍电影的价值。本空需要一个承上启下的过渡句,将“人类对深度的需求”与“电影”这一主题连接起来。G选项“It is this quiet hunger that draws us toward the wider world of cinema.(就是这种无声的渴望,让我们被吸引到更广阔的世界——电影之中。)”
前文“Films do not rush viewers forward.(电影不会急着推动观众前进。)” F选项“Instead, they draw us inward, asking for thought beyond the moment.(相反,它们将我们引向内心,促使我们在当下之外思考。)”中“Instead”与前文的“do not”形成强烈转折;“asking for thought”与第二段短剧 “leaving little room for thought”形成鲜明对比,突出电影引导观众深度思考的核心价值。
前文“Think of the white feather drifting in Forrest Gump. Recall Andy Dufresne standing in the rain in The Shawshank Redemption, arms open, finally free.(想想《阿甘正传》中那片飘浮的白羽毛,或回忆《肖申克的救赎》里安迪·杜佛兰在雨中伫立,双臂张开,终于获得自由。)” E选项“Such moments stay with us long after the screen falls silent.(这些瞬间在银幕归于寂静之后仍会长久地留在我们心中。)”

A week later, I presented my project to Ms. Davis.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That night, I sat at my desk, notebook open and mind racing with details. I decided to design a gentle reminder app especially for the elderly. I listed simple functions: important dates, daily tasks, and warm notes. I focused on making the words big and the buttons easy to touch. Whenever I felt stuck, I thought of Mrs. Thompson’s kind smile and her wish for something to help her remember. I carefully tested every part again and again, making sure it was simple and helpful. Deep in my heart, I hoped this little app could bring convenience and warmth to her and more elderly people.
A week later, I presented my project to Ms. Davis. I introduced the app’s purpose and showed how it worked. Ms. Davis praised my thoughtful idea and spoke highly of my project. After class, I brought the app to Mrs. Thompson. She was delighted and tried it at once. “This is exactly what I need,” she said happily. Watching her smile, I truly understood what Ms. Davis had meant: coding is not just code, but a way to use technology to care for others.
