Frank Gehry, a famous architect (建筑师) of special houses and buildings, passed away at the age of 96 in 2025.
Gehry was born in Canada and later moved to Los Angeles, America. He first became known by rebuilding his own house, using everyday things in new ways. This brought him much attention, and soon others asked him to design their houses. Gehry loved to try new ideas and did not like to follow old rules. His buildings had strong, unusual forms. He would first make small models from soft materials, and then use computers to help design and build the real thing. Before him, people thought computer-designed buildings cost too much, but Gehry found ways to design his buildings in special shapes without too much cost.
Two of his most famous works are the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The museum, opened in 1997, has a shiny outside and a special form that make its city more popular. The concert hall also has a shiny, round-shaped outside, and the inside wooden surfaces help make music sound better.
Many people love Gehry’s works, and other architects have learned from him, though some think his buildings are too strange. Gehry always said he wanted to make the world better. His works change how we think about what buildings can be.
39. How did Gehry become famous at first?
A. He changed his house in a new way. B. He designed special buildings for others.

A. Reducing its cost. B. Finding soft materials.
C. Making buildings stronger. D. Using everyday things.
41. What do the two works mentioned in Paragraph 3 have in common?
A. They both opened in 1997. B. They are both made of wood.
C. They both look shiny from the outside. D. They are both for music lovers.
42. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To talk about two famous buildings. B. To introduce a famous architect.

The Saihanba Mechanized Forest Farm in Hebei was empty land about sixty years ago. Now, it has about five hundred million trees. If you put these trees one meter away from each other, they would go around the equator (赤道) twelve times.
For over sixty years, three generations (代) of workers have planted and looked after the trees here, even on hard rocky ground and in sandy areas. Yu Shitao, the farm manager, said that all of the rocks had to be dug out. On very high slopes (斜坡), machines could not reach, so people and animals carried all the things needed.
When the forest farm was first completed, most trees were the same kind. To make the forest stronger against pests (害虫), diseases and fires, different kinds of trees were later planted. Today, the forest is watched over by new technology. A smart computer system helps check for pests and diseases. Thanks to it, there are very few pests and diseases. They decided to take action. Kelly had the idea of starting a weekly show called StoryKind. The show is for children aged eight and above, as well as parents and teachers. Each show is 15 minutes long. They hope it will make children more interested in books and encourage them to read more instead of watching short videos.
Both writers often get letters from readers. In the show, they will answer questions from readers, share ways to write better, and talk about how teachers and librarians (图书馆管理员) can offer help. They want everyone to understand why stories matter.
Kate thinks their work is wonderful. She wants to connect with children, teachers, and librarians through the show. Kelly is happy to work with Kate. They are honest about their work and friendship. A flying robot made in China recently was put to work in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. It can fly to power lines and remove (清理) ice, offering a new way to keep power safe during cold winters.
The KICE-500 de-icing robot was developed by a company in Changsha. In February 2026, it finished its first real job. It removed ice from a 500-meter-long power line in just 20 minutes. This is an important step in keeping power lines working in hard-to-reach mountains.
The company says the robot’s key ability is working automatically. With special instruments and recognition technology, it can move along power lines, find the right place, fix itself, remove ice, and travel between electricity towers without people’s help.
Designed for special areas, the robot can hold onto lines even at a 45-degree angle (角度). Using a special method, it removes more than 95 percent of ice up to 2cm thick. All the information is sent in real time to a control center, so workers on the ground can watch from far away.
The company plans to make the robot work longer and better in very cold weather, helping protect more power lines in the future.
49. What is the robot made for?
A. Connecting power lines in the mountains. B. Removing ice from power lines.
C. Providing safe power lines for special areas. D. Helping other robots work in winter.
50. What does the underlined word “automatically” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. By itself. B. On time. C. For free. D. In public.
51. Why are some numbers listed in Paragraph 4?
A. To describe KICE-500’s future. B. To prove it’s cold in winter.
C. To show KICE-500’s advantages. D. To compare different robots.

Lily’s pet hamster (仓鼠), Nibble, was gone! She searched every corner of her bedroom, the living room, and even the kitchen, but found nothing. Her brother Tom and her sister Mia rushed to help. They made a list of places where Nibble might hide—under the sofa, on the bookshelf, and even inside the toy box.
When their mum heard about the missing hamster, she came to help too. She mentioned that Nibble loved dark and comfortable places. The whole family decided to look for him together — they searched the house first, and then the garden. It was in the garden that an accidental discovery was made: Tom saw some peanut bits (花生碎), Nibble’s favourite snack, near the back door.
They guessed Nibble had left the peanut bits. Mum said, “Let’s follow the trail (踪迹) of peanut bits — it might lead us to find Nibble!” They divided into two groups: Lily and Mum checked the flower beds, and Tom and Mia looked around the backyard. Soon, Mia called out, “Look here!” Nibble was resting in the dry leaves near the rose plant, feeling sleepy after eating his favourite peanut bits.
Everyone smiled happily when they held Nibble. The siblings (兄弟姐妹) were praised for being careful and patient. “You three worked so well together — teamwork really helps!” Mum said.
53. What kind of places did Nibble love? (不超过5个词)

C. He built a museum in Los Angeles. D. He made some rules for building houses.
40. What is Gehry’s achievement in designing buildings on computers?

The farm also has a good fire warning system. It uses flying machines, cameras and people on the ground to guard the forest.
Through projects like Saihanba, China has helped make the world greener. Over the past twenty years, China has made up about one quarter of the world’s new green areas.
