"Life is speeding up. Everyone is becoming unwell." This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unwell person who lived in ancient Rome wrote it.
We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But is it true that having all these developments really improves the quality of our lives?
Picture this: You're rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings. A message from your friend appears on the screen. The noise from the mobile phone is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done.
Inventions have sped up our lives so much that they often leave us feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps that is because they live simpler lives.
One family in the UK went "back in time" to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons, Benjamin, 10, and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phone.
The grandmother, Lyn, said, "The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes." The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a fashionable granny to one who cooked things.
26. What does the writer want to tell us in Paragraph 3?
A. New inventions can bring us some troubles.
B. New inventions can help us work more efficiently.
C. New inventions can improve the quality of our lives.
D. New inventions can make people feel relaxed while working.
27. Why did the family choose to spend some time in a 1940s house?
A. Because they loved to live simple lives.
B. Because they all enjoyed modern inventions.
C. Because they were troubled by modern inventions.
D. Because they wanted to experience life without modern inventions.
28. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. They fell in love with the old house. B. The family enjoyed living together.
C. Their life became simpler. D. They felt their life was full of excitement.
29. What's the passage mainly about?
A. The history of technology. B. Problems caused by technology.
C. The development of technology. D. How technology improved our life.

Yunjin (云锦) is a beautiful brocade (锦缎) made in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. Yun in Chinese means clouds and jin means brocade. The materials used in yunjin are valuable, such as silk, gold and silver, resulting in its high collecting value.
Yunjin, with a history of over 1,600 years, has the best quality among all the brocades in China. It stands for the finest Chinese silk cloth. The brocade comes out from a traditional wooden loom (织布机) as big as 5.6 meters long, 1.4 meters wide and 4 meters high. The huge loom needs two people to work, one above and one below. The process (过程) is so long and complex that a brocade with a length of 5 to 6 centimeters takes two people all day to make and the production cannot be replaced with modern machines. Its pictures are large in shape and the use of gold and silver makes them rich and shining. In ancient times, yunjin served as materials for the royal family's clothes and to beautify their palaces. It was also used as gifts for important foreign guests.
With the development of technology and changes in people's lifestyle, young people have less interest in traditional arts which require a lot of time and practice. To pass down the skill of yunjin, the Chinese government set up Nanjing Yunjin Research Institute in 1957. Today, yunjin is not only a kind of traditional art but also a symbol of Chinese culture. In 2009, it was listed as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage (世界非物质文化遗产). More and more young people are starting to learn about and love this beautiful ancient art.
30. Why does Yunjin have high collecting value?
A. Because it has a long history. B. Because it is made of valuable materials.
C. Because it has the best quality. D. Because it is made by huge wooden looms.
31. What does the underlined word "complex" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Difficult. B. Different. C. Common. D. Expensive.
32. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. All young people now have great interest in learning yunjin.
B. Modern machines will soon take the place of hand-made yunjin.
C. The Chinese government has taken action to protect yunjin.
D. Yunjin has lost its value and will disappear in the near future.

With a loud noise, blue flames (火焰) rushed out from the tail of a mini turbo engine (涡轮发动机). As the key power unit for drones (无人机), this turbo engine can produce the same power as lifting a 10-kilogram object.
However, it was not made in a factory, but by Che Jingang, a student from Hainan. The 14-year-old spent over half a year on it.
To make a turbo engine, one usually needs college-level knowledge of physics. However, Che learned by doing. "It sounds difficult, but I can stay motivated by learning things step by step," he said.
Che has been very interested in science since primary school. He has built ultrasonic radar (超声雷达) model cars, robotic arms and model rockets, always taking on new challenges.
In the 5th grade, he joined an international model aircraft design competition. He designed and made his own aircraft, learning more about aviation (航空). After that, he set a new goal: to build a turbo engine by himself.
Of course, there were challenges. During the first test, the engine ran for only a few seconds, but Che didn't doubt himself. He examined the problems and kept improving the engine. "I am not afraid of failure," he said. "The most important thing is to learn from it."
Now, Che has improved his engine and is preparing for the next test. In the future, he hopes to explore more fields, such as biomedicine (生物医学) and artificial intelligence (人工智能). "If you have an idea, just try it," he said. "You will learn what you need along the way."
33. What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A. It is easy for middle school students to make a turbo engine.
B. Che Jingang learned physics knowledge all by himself step by step.

D. Che Jingang had learned all physics knowledge before primary school.
34. Which of the following best describes Che Jingang?
A. Shy and quiet. B. Strict and careful.
C. Hard-working and brave to face failure. D. Humorous and easy-going.
35. According to the passage, which is the correct order of Che Jingang's experiences?
① He built his own turbo engine.
② He joined an international model plane competition.
③ He became interested in science.
④ He planned to study biomedical intelligence.
A. ③-②-①-④ B. ②-④-③-①
C. ③-①-②-④ D. ②-①-③-④
36. What's the writer's purpose of writing this passage?
A. To introduce how a turbo engine works.
B. To encourage teenagers to keep trying and creating.
C. To show the difficulty of learning physics.
D. To call on more students to make model planes.

Kind words make a difference
We can hear kind words everywhere in our life. They are like warm sunshine, making us feel happy and confident.
I still remember when I failed my English exam last term, I felt so sad that I didn't want to talk to anyone. Just then, my English teacher came to me and said gently, "Don't lose heart. I know you are hard-working, and you will do better next time." Her words touched me deeply and gave me the courage to keep going. With her encouragement, I studied harder and made great progress in English.
From this experience, I learned that kind words have great power. They can bring hope and strength to people in trouble. So let's always be kind to others and use more kind words.
