W: Well, better wait for a few minutes.
M: When do you usually do that?
W: I do it every night before going to bed.

【原文】W: Hello, everybody. Thanks for your consistent support for our weekly meeting — New Books Sharing. Today, we’ve invited Dr. Caspar Melville, lecturer from the University of London. Dr. Melville started out as a music journalist for a black music magazine called Blues and Soul. In 1992, he moved to San Francisco and founded a jazz magazine named On the One with some friends. They did a really good job, though there was not a lot of money in it. In 1997, he moved back to London and started teaching, and made the decision to find another way to write about music. He grew up in London. He feels that the music in London clubs has formed him. But unfortunately, it has been seriously undervalued by the academic world. In black music studies, jazz has received great attention. But dance music has been largely ignored. His book, It’s a London Thing, is meant to change that situation. So let’s welcome Dr. Melville to share with us his ideas in the book.
第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Healthy Eating Plate
Use the Healthy Eating Plate as a guide for creating healthy, balanced meals-whether served at the table or packed in a lunch box.
Building a Healthy and Balanced Diet
The Healthy Eating Plate presents a simple visual guide to building a healthy meal. By showing different food groups on one plate, it stresses balance, choice, and everyday eating habits.
HEALTHY EATING PLATE
Use healthy oils (like olive and canola oil) for cooking, on salad, and at the table. Limit butter. Avoid trans fat.
Drink water, tea, or coffee (with little or no sugar). Limit milk/dairy (1-2 servings/day) and juice (1 small glass/day). Avoid sugary drinks.
The more veggies - and the greater the variety - the better. Potatoes and French fries are excluded.
Eat a variety of whole grains (like whole-wheat bread, whole-grain pasta, and brown rice). Limit refined grains (like white rice and white bread).
Eat plenty of fruits of all colors.
STAY ACTIVE!
Choose fish, poultry, beans, and nuts; limit red meat and cheese; avoid bacon, cold cuts, and other processed meats.
These guidelines highlight what matters most in healthy eating:
• The type of carbohydrate (碳水化合物) in the diet is more important than the amount of carbohydrate, because some sources — like vegetables (other than potatoes), fruits, whole grains, and beans — are healthier than others.
• It advises consumers to avoid sugary drinks, a major source of calories — usually with little nutritional value — in the American diet.
• It encourages consumers to use healthy oils, and it does not set a maximum on the percentage of calories people should get each day from healthy sources of fat. In this way, the Healthy Eating Plate recommends the opposite of the low-fat message promoted for decades by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Your Plate and the Planet
Just as different foods can have different impacts on human health, they also have different impacts on the environment. Food production is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions (排放), and it places an enormous demand upon our earth’s natural resources.
21. Which food choice would be most likely questioned?
A. Nuts added to a salad. B. Brown rice with beans.
C. Steamed fish with vegetables. D. Bacon served with white bread.
22. What is the main message of the Healthy Eating Plate?
A. To count calories first. B. To follow a low-fat diet.
C. To cut carbohydrate intake. D. To focus on diet quality
23. Why is the USDA mentioned in the text?
A. To explain how food policies are made.
B. To highlight the changes in dietary views.
C. To show that the Plate takes official advice.
D. To support the idea of limiting fat consumption.
【答案】21. D 22. D 23. B

Recently, on a snow-covered walk through Milham Park in Portage Lake, Michigan, a woman named Laura noticed something strange up ahead. There were two little black animals in the snow, shaking under a bush. Upon closer inspection, Laura realized that the birds were a pair of ducks. The animal lover immediately knew something was wrong — the birds didn’t look like wild ducks, and they seemed to be suffering in the freezing temperatures. Immediately, Laura contacted Michigan Duck Rescue and Sanctuary (庇护所), who sent rescues to the scene. “Literally within 15 minutes, they were out the door and at the park, and they had the shaking ducks comfortable in a warm carrier,” Michigan Duck Rescue and Sanctuary wrote in a post.
Rescuers identified the birds as black Swedish ducks — medium-sized domestic ducks known for their black-and-white coloring. Their hearts broke for the birds, who had likely been abandoned. “There are no ducks that I know of that are that size and that color who are wild,” a representative from the rescue said. Unlike wild ducks, domestic ducks cannot fly, making it very difficult for them to survive without human care. These two probably wouldn’t have made it if Laura hadn’t stepped in.
Both birds were “disorderly,” and one of them suffered from discharge around her eyes. Sanctuary team members quickly cleaned them up and settled them in a warm place. They spent weeks monitoring their food intake and health, making sure the birds were on the road to recovery.
Today, these birds are feeling much better, enjoying life in their forever home. “They’re both doing very well,” Laura said in an interview. “They’re living happily with all their other duck friends at the sanctuary!”
24. Which word best describes Laura in paragraph 1?
A. Observant. B. Optimistic. C. Cooperative. D. Confident.
25. What indicated the ducks were domestic rather than wild?
A. Their relatively small size. B. Their distinct appearance.
C. Their shaking in the cold. D. Their presence in the park.
26. What does the word “disorderly” in paragraph 3 describe about the ducks?
A. Their physical state. B. Their eating habits.
C. Their living environment. D. Their social behavior.
27. What made the rescue a success?
A. The ducks’ domestic nature. B. The favorable weather conditions.
C. Advanced rescue equipment. D. Individual awareness and expert action.
【答案】24. A 25. B 26. A 27. D
【解析】
【导语】文章主要讲述了Laura在公园发现并救助两只被遗弃的家养黑瑞典鸭的故事。
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Recently, on a snow-covered walk through Milham Park in Portage Lake, Michigan, a woman named Laura noticed something strange up ahead. There were two little black animals in the snow, shaking under a bush.(最近,在密歇根州波蒂奇湖米尔汉姆公园被积雪覆盖的小径上散步时,一位名叫Laura的女士注意到前方有些异样。雪地里有两只黑色的小动物,正在灌木丛下瑟瑟发抖)”可知,Laura注意到了雪地里的异常情况,说明她是一个善于观察的人。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Rescuers identified the birds as black Swedish ducks — medium-sized domestic ducks known for their black-and-white coloring.(救援人员认出这些鸟是黑瑞典鸭,这是一种中等大小的家鸭,以其黑白相间的颜色而闻名)”以及““There are no ducks that I know of that are that size and that color who are wild,” a representative from the rescue said.(“据我所知,没有野鸭是那种大小和颜色的,”救援组织的一名代表说)”可知,这些鸭子独特的外观表明它们是家养的而不是野生的。
【26题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Both birds were “disorderly,” and one of them suffered from discharge around her eyes. Sanctuary team members quickly cleaned them up and settled them in a warm place.(两只鸟都disorderly,其中一只眼睛周围有分泌物。

We live in a world where conversations about mental health are becoming more common. Yet, while sharing struggles often receives understanding, admitting to feeling steady can sometimes feel uncomfortable. Why does saying “I’m doing well” often come with a hint of guilt, as if being okay is somehow inappropriate when others are not?
This phenomenon is linked to what psychologists call upward emotional comparison. In our interconnected society, we constantly measure our own emotional state against the visible suffering of others. As a result, expressions of personal stability can be misunderstood as indifference or privilege, making people hesitate to share their neutral or positive wellbeing. The language of crisis feels more familiar and authentic than the language of calm.
However, feeling okay is not emotional ignorance. Research in positive psychology suggests that emotions like calmness and contentment are not merely personal benefits. They serve a critical social function. Positive emotions can broaden our perspective, enhance problem-solving abilities, and build psychological resources. This inner steadiness, far from being selfish, actually increases our capacity for empathy and compassion. It acts as an emotional bulwark, allowing individuals to navigate the waves of collective stress without being overwhelmed.
Therefore, cultivating and acknowledging this “quiet okayness” is a form of emotional resilience. It involves several practices: answering honestly when genuinely well, valuing the stable middle ground between crisis and excitement, allowing oneself to feel gratitude without guilt, and sharing one’s calm through attentive presence. In challenging times, such steadiness becomes a quiet strength. By openly acknowledging our own periods of stability, we help normalize a full range of human emotions and create space for others to accept their own state without judgment. Ultimately, this honest sharing of wellbeing, one conversation at a time, contributes to building a more emotionally resilient community.
28. Why might people feel guilty saying “I’m doing well”?
A. They feel they face a language crisis. B. They fear their luck won’t last long.
C. They think sharing feelings is impolite. D. They worry it shows a lack of concern.
29. What does the underlined word “bulwark” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Measurement. B. Barrier. C. Support. D. Pressure.
30. Which of the following actions best illustrates “quiet okayness”?
A. Sharing only anxieties to seek support. B. Encouraging others to feel constantly happy.
C. Telling a friend you’re well when you truly are. D. Saying “I’m fine” quickly even if feeling stressed.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Quiet Strength of Feeling Okay B. Why We Should Only Share Our Struggles
C. How Positive Psychology Builds Happiness D. The Problem of Upward Emotional Comparison
【答案】28. D 29. C 30. C 31. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要讲述了承认自己状态良好是一种情感力量及其重要性。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“As a result, expressions of personal stability can be misunderstood as indifference or privilege, making people hesitate to share their neutral or positive wellbeing.(因此,个人稳定的表达可能会被误解为冷漠或特权,使人们犹豫是否要分享他们的中性或积极的幸福感)”可知,人们担心说“我很好”会显示出缺乏关心。故选D。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中 “It acts as an emotional bulwark, allowing individuals to navigate the waves of collective stress without being overwhelmed.(它充当着一种情感bulwark,使人们能够在集体压力的浪潮中应对自如而不被压垮)”可知,bulwark在这里表示能抵御压力的“支撑,屏障,支持”,A. Measurement.测量;B. Barrier.屏障;C. Support.支持;D. Pressure.压力。故选C。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Therefore, cultivating and acknowledging this “quiet okayness” is a form of emotional resilience. It involves several practices: answering honestly when genuinely well, valuing the stable middle ground between crisis and excitement, allowing oneself to feel gratitude without guilt, and sharing one’s calm through attentive presence.(因此,培养并承认这种 “quietly okayness(平静的安好)” 是一种情绪复原力。它包括这些做法:状态真的好时诚实回答、重视危机与亢奋之间稳定的中间地带、允许自己不带愧疚地心怀感恩,以及通过专注的陪伴把平静传递给他人)”可知,当你真正感觉良好时告诉朋友你很好,这样做最能说明“平静的安好”。故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“Therefore, cultivating and acknowledging this “quiet okayness” is a form of emotional resilience. It involves several practices: answering honestly when genuinely well, valuing the stable middle ground between crisis and excitement, allowing oneself to feel gratitude without guilt, and sharing one’s calm through attentive presence. In challenging times, such steadiness becomes a quiet strength. D
When danger approaches, animals seem to follow the ancient proverb: “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Researchers have found subtle ways that animals communicate with other species in cooperative defense.
A study in Nature Ecology & Evolution reported that over 20 bird species across four continents make nearly identical high-pitched (高音调的) “whining” calls to warn others of birds like cuckoos nearby. Cuckoos are brood parasites — they lay eggs in other birds’ nests, often pushing out the hosts’ own eggs, to trick host birds into raising their chicks. According to co-lead author James Kennerley, this call works as the word for “cuckoo” and appears to be understood across species, offering clues about how language may have originated.
Birds producing this alarm call often live in regions with high numbers of brood parasites that target multiple host species. Hearing the call, potential hosts react aggressively to drive the invaders away.
To investigate further, Will Feeney’s team played recordings of such alarm calls — originally from birds on other continents — to potential host birds in Australia and China. They found that the hosts responded just as quickly to foreign alarm calls as to their own. “This indicates that sound helps communication between species, not only within one species,” explains Feeney. He suggests that while many bird species may respond to certain alarm sounds, those in parasite-rich areas have adapted the call to carry clear threat information.
Back in 1871, Charles Darwin suggested that spoken language might have evolved from the imitation and modification of instinctive (本能的) sounds — for example, a scream in response to pain. Feeney notes, “Birds changing their built-in calls for a new use could be an early stage toward language, something once thought uniquely human. ”
32. How can animals of different species cooperate in defense?
A. By communicating freely. B. By predicting danger in advance.
C. By following the old routine. D. By making the same sound as signal.
33. Why do birds make “whining” calls to warn others of cuckoos?
A. Because cuckoos are good at playing tricks. B. Because cuckoos steal eggs from hosts’ nests.
C. Because cuckoos have a wide range of species. D. Because cuckoos make hosts care for their young.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Birds universally recognize alarm calls. B. Birds ignore recordings of alarm calls.
C. Birds’ alarm calls function within species. D. Brood parasites target certain host species.
35. Why does the author mention Darwin in paragraph 5?
A. To show language is still evolving. B. To prove human language is unique.
C. To link bird calls with language origin. D. To question the reliability of the study.
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. A 35. C

根据第二段“A study in Nature Ecology & Evolution reported that over 20 bird species across four continents make nearly identical high - pitched (高音调的) “whining” calls to warn others of birds like cuckoos nearby.(《自然·生态与进化》杂志上的一项研究报告称,四大洲的20多种鸟类会发出几乎相同的高音调“呜呜”叫声,以警告附近有像杜鹃这样的鸟类)”以及第四段“He suggests that while many bird species may respond to certain alarm sounds, those in parasite-rich areas have adapted the call to carry clear threat information.(他指出,虽然许多鸟类可能会对某些警报声做出反应,但那些生活在寄生鸟类丰富地区的鸟类已经调整了叫声,使其携带明确的威胁信息)”可知,不同物种的动物可以通过发出相同的声音作为信号来进行合作防御。故选D项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Cuckoos are brood parasites— they lay eggs in other birds’nests, often pushing out the hosts’own eggs, to trick host birds into raising their chicks.(杜鹃是巢寄生鸟类——它们在其他鸟类的巢中产卵,常常把宿主自己的蛋推出去,诱骗宿主鸟类养育它们的雏鸟)”可知,鸟类发出“呜呜”叫声警告杜鹃,是因为杜鹃会诱骗宿主鸟类照顾自己的幼鸟。故选D项。
【34题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“To investigate further, Will Feeney’s team played recordings of such alarm calls — originally from birds on other continents— to potential host birds in Australia and China. How To Stop Bein g A People Pleaser
As a recovering people pleaser, I spent much of my life keeping others happy. Breaking this habit meant stepping on a few toes. However, I’ve become a happier person as a result. Here are some tips I used to stop being a people pleaser.
Identify your priorities. Take a moment to think about why you are trying to learn how to stop being a people pleaser. ___36___ Why do you feel the need to keep them happy? Answering these questions will help you set a goal that you can hold yourself accountable to.
Just say “no”. One reason why people pleasers say “yes” to everything is that they fear disappointing others. ___37___ If you are a people pleaser, you are likely to spend lots of energy trying to control how people feel about you. Eddie valued his family’s accordion (手风琴) — a treasure passed down from his grandfather to his father, representing his Mexican-American family’s Tejano music tradition. Raised in San Antonio neighborhood filled with Tejano rhythms, Eddie learned the instrument from his father and formed the band Las Estrellas (“The Stars”) with childhood friends: Luis on drums and Ruben on guitar.
Each day, Eddie hurried to Luis’s house for practice, struggling with the heavy accordion case while worrying about Ruben. Though a gifted guitarist who picked up songs quickly and loved playing with the band, Ruben hated practicing alone. He was always late, and his lack of solo (单独的) practice led to constant mistakes — a growing problem for the trio (三重奏).
Their lives changed when Luis handed Eddie an envelope from the Tejano Festival: an invitation to perform in just two months. The boys celebrated wildly, but Eddie’s joy was mixed with anxiety, hoping the opportunity would motivate Ruben to practice. That night, Eddie shared the news with his family. His father, a former festival winner, presented a trophy (奖杯) with “First Place” written on it and encouraged him, “You belong there and will shine.” Eddie admitted his worry about Ruben, who was too talented and dear a friend to replace. His father advised, “Find out why he won’t practice alone and help him.”
At their next practice, Ruben messed up the festival song at the very beginning. He claimed sore fingers from building a hut (简陋的小屋), but Luis accused him of skipping practice. Ruben got annoyed, and Eddie was angry. Following his father’s advice, Eddie asked Ruben why he didn’t play at home as he should. Ruben admitted, “My guitar sounds lonely alone, and I can’t focus.”
Upon learning where Ruben’s problem lay, Eddie decided to take immediate action to make practice fun for Ruben. On the way to Luis’s, Eddie came up with a plan: practice together at Ruben’s house daily. Luis agreed and they ordered Ruben’s favorite pizza for a surprise.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With pizza in hand, Eddie and Luis arrived at Ruben’s door.

【答案】参考范文
With pizza in hand, Eddie and Luis arrived at Ruben’s door. Ruben’s eyes widened in surprise when he opened the door, and his annoyance from the earlier argument melted away instantly. As they sat on the floor of his room, pizza boxes spread out, Eddie said, “We’re a band. We don’t practice alone — we practice together.” For the next two months, they showed up at Ruben’s house every afternoon. They laughed through mistakes, adjusted the song to highlight Ruben’s guitar skills, and turned practice into a joyful time. Ruben no longer felt lonely, and his playing became precise and full of passion.
Finally the big day came. The three boys stepped onto the stage, Eddie’s accordion glinting under the lights. When the first note rang out, they played in perfect harmony, Ruben’s solo shining brighter than ever. The audience cheered wildly as the final note faded. They didn’t just win the first prize that day — they learned that the best music, like the truest friendship, is never played alone.

C. Advanced rescue equipment. D. Individual awareness and expert action.
