For five long years, master weaver (织工) Wang Pengwei worked day and night in her quiet Dingzhou workshop, pursuing a bold dream: to weave a full copy of the famous ancient painting, Along the River During the Qingming Festival in Kesi, a Chinese silk weaving art with a history of more than 2,000 years.
The project was far more difficult than she had imagined. To show the painting’s tiny details in silk, it had to be made much bigger. Wang and her team of ten weavers needed to work perfectly together. They spent three months practicing, just to make sure every hand moved in harmony. What truly tested their resolve, however, was the extreme slowness of the work. Each day’s work sometimes added only a few millimeters to the length.
“There were moments we almost gave up,” Wang recalled. The work required not just skill, but great patience. After 126,000 hours of effort, the 8.2-meter-long piece was finally finished. The moment it was cut from the loom (织布机), the workshop was filled with cheers and relieved smiles. Wang felt a deep joy: “This shows our craft is not just history; it is still alive,” she said.
The project did more than complete a weaving. It changed a life — the life of her son, Wang Bo. He once saw kesi as old-fashioned and built his own business far from home. However, upon returning during the pandemic, he watched his mother devote herself to the loom. Touched by her passion and realizing the craft might disappear, he made a big decision: to leave his job and learn the family art.
“Choosing kesi is like walking a long, narrow road,” Wang Bo said. Although it takes much time and brings little money, he finds true meaning in it. Now, he is creating new kesi products for everyday use. He also helps teach young students, hoping they too will appreciate this ancient beauty.
Through their shared dedication, the art of kesi is being warmly passed on. It honors the past, while weaving its way into the future.
4. What was the main challenge in the project?
A. The extremely slow daily progress. B. The much larger scale of the copy.
C. The shortage of painting materials. D. The long early training period.
5. What was key to completing the kesi work?
A. The pursuit of personal artistic fame. B. A strict division of labor among weavers.
C. Perfect teamwork and great patience. D. Advanced looms and public support.
6. Why did Wang Bo decide to learn the kesi craft?
A. To learn a traditional skill. B. To preserve the dying craft.
C. To change his career path. D. To fulfill his mother’s wish.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The History of Silk Weaving. B. A Long Journey, a Regretful Choice.
C. The Future of an Ancient Art. D. Two Generations, a Shared Dream.

Science, for all its benefits, operates in a moral grey area. We seldom acknowledge how profoundly animal life supports the research yielding our medicines and safety regulations. In the UK alone, 2024 saw 2.64 million officially approved scientific procedures on live animals, many causing suffering or death. However, a recent government plan proposes phasing out animal testing, suggesting that emerging technologies could largely replace animals in the scientific efforts.
The UK has previously banned animal testing for cosmetics (化妆品) and restricted its research use, but many widespread practices, like causing tumours (肿瘤) in mice for cancer research, remain accepted despite their cruelty. When animal welfare comes into conflict with human benefit, collective compassion often reaches its limit. Success relies on convincing both scientists and the public that trusted methods can be replaced by equally or more effective alternatives.
Fortunately, workable alternatives are emerging. “Organ-on-a-chip” systems use lab-grown cells to imitate bodily functions. Meanwhile, machine learning is good at predicting drug toxic effects. These methods won’t offer perfect human insights, but neither do animal tests, as evidenced by the classic example of paracetamol, which is safe for humans but poisonous to cats. Unlike vague (模糊的) AI strategies, this government plan appears concrete. It commits £60 million in funding, focuses on testing specific animal-free alternatives, and encouragingly outlines a decade-long roadmap for their maturation, avoiding the mistake of treating technology as a cure-all.
This shift represents both a scientific and economic opportunity. Animal testing not only raises serious ethical questions, but also is a costly and slow method. With the EU and US also seeking reductions, there is a global market for the relevant knowledge and experience. Most importantly, a moral duty exists to free these animals. While past policies reduced the use of popular species like dogs, today 95% of lab animals are rodents, birds, or fish. They, too deserve ethical consideration as we strive for humane scientific progress.
8. What is the UK government’s new plan?
A. To stop animal tests immediately. B. To end animal tests gradually with new tech.
C. To limit animal tests to cosmetics. D. To expand medical research by animal tests.
9. What can we know from paragraph 2?
A. The major barrier to taking the place of animal tests.
B. The continuing widespread use of cosmetic tests today.
C. The ethical conflict between different cultures.
D. The great effect of earlier bans on animal testing.
10. How will the government carry out the plan?
A. By promoting vague AI strategies for prediction.
B. By funding tests and setting a ten-year roadmap.
C. By depending only on “organ-on-a-chip” systems.
D. By treating new technologies as a cure-all solution.
11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To state the economic reason. B. To defend a lot of species.
C. To demand an immediate ban. D. To explain the need for change.
D
In modern therapy culture, a popular view claims that you shouldn’t try to change — you are perfectly imperfect, and the right people will tolerate your every idiosyncrasy (怪癖). Similarly, personality has traditionally been defined as a stable set of traits. Many believe they are trapped by the genetic hand they were dealt at birth. However, these ideas are increasingly being challenged.
Research shows that personality is more fluid than we think. A previous study found that just three months of digital coaching could reliably increase emotional stability and self-discipline. This supports the idea that personality traits can be intentionally developed. Even the concepts of introversion (内向) and extroversion, popularized by Carl Jung, are not fixed categories. Jung himself stated that these traits are not black-and-white categories, but rather a continuum.
Our behavior and personality can vary depending on context. Who you are on a cold winter Wednesday may differ from who you are on a sunny Saturday. This malleability (可塑性) suggests that we are not locked into one version of ourselves.
Social connection plays a crucial role in well-being. Displaying extroverted traits, even occasionally, is linked with better stress resistance, such as lower blood pressure and heart rate. The Harvard Study of Adult Development, an 80-year project tracking hundreds of lives, concluded that thriving social relationships are the most important factor in a happy and healthy life.
Despite this, the growing popularity of the introvert label — often worn as a badge (徽章)— may encourage people to avoid social situations. Over-identifying with introversion can limit personal growth. Research shows that it’s not actual introversion, but the strength of one’s identity as an introvert, that makes acting outgoing uncomfortable.
Challenging the idea of rigid personality types could lead to greater happiness. Whether you’re an introvert or extrovert; developing underused traits — like reflection or emotional regulation — is possible. The first step is accepting that change is not only possible, but sometimes necessary.
12. How is the author’s opinion introduced in paragraph 1?
A. By providing statistical data. B. By offering a solution.
C. By presenting popular beliefs D. By asking some questions
13. What does the underlined word “fluid” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Complex. B. Fixed. C. Changeable. D. Predictable.
14. Why does the author mention “a cold winter Wednesday” and “a sunny Saturday” in paragraph 3?
A. To illustrate how personality changes in different situations.
B. To prove people’s inner feelings seldom change over time.
C. To show weather can shape one’s personality permanently.
D. To contrast daily behaviors on different days of the week.
15. What can be inferred about people who strongly identify as introverts?
A. They are born disliking social activities.
B. They have their personal growth severely limited.
C. They possess greater emotional stability.
D. They might avoid beneficial social behaviors.

Foraging (觅食), or looking in nature for wild food sources, never went away completely. Nowadays, it can be a fun hobby. Edible (可食用的) plants grow in surprising abundance around you. However, you cannot simply walk into the place, grab a handful of greens, and start eating. ___16___
If you are interested in foraging, the most important rule above all others is to find an experienced forager who can guide you. ___17___ These include wild onion, wild garlic, brambles and the list goes on. You will also learn the following rules that even the most experienced foragers are sure to follow.
___18___ Public lands, such as parks or forests, are normally fine. If the place is privately owned, you need to get permission first to forage there. Also, be sure to avoid places where chemicals are sprayed to kill pests or weeds.
Don’t damage the landscape. When you do find a patch of edible plants, be sure to take only what you need. If you gather everything, then the plant will not have a chance to grow back.
Know which plants are poisonous. Although the number of plants that are poisonous enough to be fatal is small, it takes only one mistake. Many foraging field guides are available. ___19___: You will also want to bring a basket or other container, tools for cutting or digging, and a well-stocked first aid kit.
Once a forager gets home with his or her bounty, it’s time to prepare the meal. ___20___ Some wild edibles taste best raw, while others should be cooked. Cookbooks that focus on recipes for wild foods are a great place to start.
A. Respect the wild places you visit.
B. Again, experience makes a difference.
C. Modern-day foragers know how risky that can be.
D. Foraging is the primary way for one to get the meal.
E. Make sure you are allowed to forage wherever it is you choose to go.

Molly lives in a small house on a quiet street. She bought her house 20 years ago. Jim and Iris bought the house next to Molly’s at the same time. They were good friends and good neighbours for 20 years, but now Jim’s house is empty. Jim and Iris have moved to Florida to live near their daughter and grandchildren.
“I hope my new neighbours are as nice as Jim and Iris,” thought Molly. “I will be very upset if some young people buy the house. They will be noisy. They might have children and pets.”
A few days later, a moving truck parked outside the house next door. Molly stood at the window of her living room and watched. She saw sofas, tables and beds go into the house. She saw the moving men carry many boxes into the house.
“Oh no!” she thought. “A child!” Next, a moving man carried a red bicycle into the garden. It was clearly a child’s bike — too small for an adult. “Another child! Shouting! Screaming! I don’t want to live next door to children.”
Molly looked at her watch. It was time to go to the community centre. Every Friday, there is a free gardening workshop there. Gustav Raer is a famous horticulturist (园艺家). He grows beautiful flowers and rare plants. He has designed award-winning gardens all over the world. Now he is retired, but he still likes to garden. So he gives free gardening demonstrations at community centres.
“Molly put on her coat and went out of her house. She locked the door and hurried down the street. The men were still taking boxes and furniture out of the truck.
“I don’t know if I will enjoy the gardening workshop today”, thought Molly. “I am so unhappy. I love my house. I love my quiet street. But now there will be noisy children. Everything will change.”

A 5. C 6. B 7. D

根据最后一段“Through their shared dedication, the art of kesi is being warmly passed on.(凭借他们共同的坚守,缂丝技艺得以薪火相传。)” 所以D项“Two Generations, a Shared Dream.(两代匠心,共筑一梦)”契合文章主旨。
C
B 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据最后一段“Animal testing not only raises serious ethical questions, but also is a costly and slow method. With the EU and US also seeking reductions, there is a global market for the relevant knowledge and experience. Most importantly, a moral duty exists to free these animals. They, too deserve ethical consideration as we strive for humane scientific progress.(动物实验不仅引发了严重的伦理问题,而且是一种成本高昂且耗时的方法。随着欧盟和美国也在寻求减少动物实验,相关的知识和经验在全球范围内有着广阔的市场。最重要的是,解放这些动物是一种道德责任。虽然过去的政策减少了狗等受欢迎物种的使用,但如今95%的实验动物是啮齿类动物、鸟类或鱼类。在我们追求人道的科学进步的过程中,它们同样值得被给予伦理上的关怀。)”可知,作者写最后一段的目的是解释变革的必要性。
C 13. C 14. A 15. D

Many believe they are trapped by the genetic hand they were dealt at birth.(在现代的治疗理念中,有一种流行的观点认为,我们不应试图去改变自己——因为我们本身就是不完美的,而合适的人会包容我们所有的独特之处。
根据第二段“A previous study found that just three months of digital coaching could reliably increase emotional stability and self-discipline. Jung himself stated that these traits are not black-and-white categories, but rather a continuum.(一项先前的研究发现,仅仅三个月的数字辅导就能可靠地提高情绪稳定性和自律性。这支持了性格特征可以被有意培养的观点。即使是由Carl Jung推广的内向和外向的概念,也并非固定的类别。Jung本人就曾指出,这些特征并非非黑即白的类别,而是一个连续体。)”可知,人的性格是易变的,
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Our behavior and personality can vary depending on context. Who you are on a cold winter Wednesday may differ from who you are on a sunny Saturday.(我们的行为和性格会因环境而有所不同。在寒冷的冬日周三的你,可能与在阳光明媚的周六的你截然不同。)”可知,作者在第三段中提及“一个寒冷的周三”和“一个阳光明媚的周六”是为了说明人在不同情况下性格会发生变化。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Despite this, the growing popularity of the introvert label — often worn as a badge (徽章)— may encourage people to avoid social situations.(尽管如此,随着“内向者”这一标签的日益流行(常被当作一种标志来使用),可能会促使人们避免参加社交活动。)”

先行词为the man,指人,在定语从句“laid the foundation of China’s educational system over 2,000 years ago”中作主语,所以用关系代词who或that引导。
encourage sb. to do sth.
根据空前的介词like以及后面的“hard work, respect, and filial piety”可知,此处应用名词honesty,意为“诚实”,与它们并列。

Recently. Campus Watch has surveyed Senior Three students’ exercise situation. Here are some findings.
As the chart shows, only 24.5% of students exercise for over 30 minutes daily besides school sports. A large majority, 70%, take part in school sports only, while 5.5% do no exercise at all.
Though we are buried in study tasks, regular exercise is never a waste of time. It keeps us energetic, relieves stress and helps us focus better. So let’s make a small change: take a 10-minute walk between classes or do some simple stretching. Even tiny steps will keep us fit for the busy days ahead!

When Molly arrived at the community centre, she found Gustav Baer absent. “Mr Baer cannot come today,” the manager explained. “He’s moving into a new house this week, so he’s too busy. But his friend will show us how to plant roses.” Molly sighed. A new house? She wondered where. The workshop went on, but she couldn’t focus. Her mind kept returning to the red bicycle next door. After the class, she walked home slowly, dreading the noise that awaited her. To her surprise, the moving truck was gone. The house stood quiet, its lights off.
The next day, the doorbell rang and Molly was surprised to find Gustav Baer at the door. Gustav smiled warmly. “Excuse me, are you Molly?” he asked gently. “I have often seen you at the gardening workshop. I believe we’re neighbours now.” Feeling both surprised and awkward, Molly admitted that she had once worried noisy children would move next door and disturb the peace of the street. Gustav laughed softly and comforted her. He told her the bicycles belonged to his grandchildren, who only came to visit on weekends. Besides, he loved a quiet life as well. That weekend, his grandchildren knocked on her door with a pot of flowers. “For you, kind neighbour!” Molly smiled, realizing how wrong she had been.
