第一节
Possible Version 1
Dear Bill,
I’m excited about the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper. I believe "AI Study Tips" is the better choice.
With AI developing rapidly in today’s society, it has become an important tool in learning. This column could provide practical guidance on using AI responsibly and effectively, such as improving English, organizing study plans, or revising for exams. It would help classmates understand both the benefits and limitations of AI. For example, a tip on using AI to summarize reading materials could save time, but it can not replace students’ own judgment and creativity.
Such content not only meets the needs of students but also fits perfectly with our newspaper’s goal to combine learning with innovation and interest.
Yours,
Li Hua
Possible Version 2
Dear Bill,
I’m excited about the idea of adding a new column to our English newspaper. I believe "Campus Crafts" would be a great choice.
In today’s digital and AI-driven society, people often focus on screen-based learning and overlook the importance of hands-on activities. This column could introduce various craft projects, such as kite-making, DIY art, and simple woodworking, encouraging students to explore their artistic talents, develop practical skills and enjoy the process of creating. It is a fun way to balance intellectual learning with manual practice.
Craft-making not only helps students strengthen their hands-on abilities but also fits perfectly with our newspaper’s goal of combining learning with innovation.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(25分)
Just as Sam felt hopeless, Rusty came close and licked his hand. The warm, rough touch instantly calmed Sam’s trembling heart. Gathering all his strength, Sam whispered, “Rusty, I need help.” As if understanding every word, Rusty’s ears pricked up. It nuzzled Sam’s injured ankle gently, then dashed towards the village, stopping occasionally to look back, urging Sam to hold on. Through the pouring rain, the tiny red-brown figure ran without stop, its wet fur clinging to its body. Before long, Rusty burst into Sam’s yard, barking wildly at Sam’s father. Sensing something wrong, the father followed Rusty back along the muddy road, and soon found the shivering, helpless boy trapped in the mud.
The next morning, Sam’s father made a decision. He knelt down and touched Rusty’s head softly, saying to Sam, “This dog saved you, and it’s part of our family now.” Sam’s eyes filled with tears of joy as he hugged Rusty tightly. The thin dog wagged its tail wildly, as if it had finally found its long-lost home. From then on, Rusty no longer wandered alone. It waited for Sam at the road corner every afternoon, accompanying him on the way home. The three-mile walk was no longer tiring, for the warm friendship between a boy and his dog turned the long road into a journey full of sunshine and happiness.

European Towns Keeping Traditional Crafts Alive
In an age of mass production, these towns maintain centuries-old skills. Each provides practical experiences where visitors can create their own souvenirs.
Murano, Italy
Famous for glass-making since 1291, this island near Venice has over 50 workshops. At the Glass Museum you can watch masters shape glowing liquid glass into animals and vases. Don’t miss the chance to make your own glass bead (珠子) at a family-run workshop—the experience lasts about two hours.
Delft, Netherlands
The blue-and-white pottery known as Delftware has been produced here since the 1600s. At Royal Delft, the last remaining factory from the 17th century, you can paint traditional windmill patterns on ceramic tiles (地砖). The town’s Christmas Market (late November to December) features special pottery decorations.
Seville, Spain
This Andalusian capital preserves the complex art of flamenco dress-making. In the Triana district, workshops teach how to make the characteristic dotted fabrics and add special decorations. The annual Flamenco Festival in September includes costume exhibitions at the Museum of Arts.
Rovaniemi, Finland
Located on the Arctic Circle, this “official hometown of Santa Claus” is known for reindeer leather crafts. At the Arctic Design House, you can design reindeer leather into notebook covers using traditional Sámi patterns. The nearby reindeer farm offers insights into how leather is naturally colored with local plants.

The sound of my mother preparing breakfast fills the house — my morning alarm.
As I drag my body toward the kitchen, I’m greeted by my mother standing over the stove. She effortlessly cooks a dish that blends Western and Eastern styles, a beloved breakfast classic in our family. This is my grandmother’s recipe, which reflected her upbringing.
Since my grandmother’s passing, I’ve become more aware of my mother’s aging and her dedication (奉献) to cooking for us. She has cooked for her family for more than 30 years, dividing her time between three countries — Korea, Canada and Germany. When my parents visit us from Korea, they stay with us for several months. My mother helps around the house, showing her cooking skills to provide delicious meals for me, my partner and our kids. In alternating years, she and my dad will travel to Berlin to spend a couple of weeks with my sister and her partner.
According to Statista, most Canadians claim to spend between 31 and 60 minutes preparing an average weekday dinner for themselves and others in their household. Ten percent of respondents to the 2022 survey stated that they spend more than an hour preparing their evening meal. My mother belongs to that 10 percent.
Her cooking extends beyond the kitchen, starting with careful grocery shopping trips where she examines produce (农产品) and finds the best deals. She takes everyone’s preferences and needs into account. The meal she creates becomes a ritual(仪式), bringing the family together to connect and share. Helping her out in the kitchen demands a great deal of patience. Yet, I know it’s her way of expressing love. As I cut the vegetables, she glances over and notices that my carrots are not equally sized. She pushes me aside to take over the task. “Just do the dishes.”
24. What do we know about the author’s mother from the text?
A. She has three daughters. B. She has great cooking skills.
C. She lives with the author in Korea. D. She invented the author’s beloved breakfast classic.
25. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning statistics about meal preparation time in paragraph 4?
A. To present a common issue.
B. To show her mother’s devotion.
C. To explain the reasons behind infrequent cooking.
D. To highlight the significance of home-cooked meals.
26. Why does the author say helping her mother in the kitchen requires patience?
A. Her mother is easily annoyed. B. Her mother dislikes being disturbed.
C. Her mother expects perfection in cooking. D. Her mother wants to teach her everything.
27.What is the author’s attitude toward her mother’s cooking?
A. Anxious and frightened. B. Doubtful and disapproving.
C. Casual and unconcerned. D. Appreciative and affectionate.
C
When software engineer Mark Rinaldi added a small potted plant to his home office in 2023, he expected only decorative value. To his surprise, his focus improved noticeably. He soon installed three more plants and created an online group to share his experience. Within months, the group grew to 50,000 members worldwide. Rinaldi’s case reflects a global trend: desk gardens are becoming a new tool for well-being in digital lifestyles.
“Plants are no longer just decorations; they’re productivity partners,” says Dr. Lena Schmidt, an environmental psychologist at Hamburg University. “Our study shows that people working near plants report 28% higher concentration levels and 19% lower anxiety.” Schmidt explains that this is partly because plants gently demand micro-breaks—glancing at a leaf or watering a plant provides mental rest without full distraction.
The benefits extend beyond the home office. Companies like GreenSpace Design now specialize in “biophilic (亲生物的) office decorations”. “We replace plain walls with vertical (垂直的) gardens and add plant dividers between desks,” says co-founder Kim Lee. “Employees in these spaces take 25% fewer sick days and show better teamwork.” Data from their client surveys indicate that 73% of employees feel more connected to coworkers when sharing plant care duties.
However, Schmidt warns against viewing plants as a magic solution. “The positive effects depend on real engagement, not just presence. A neglected plant can actually increase guilt.” She suggests starting with one low-maintenance plant like a snake plant or peace lily. “Observe its growth as you would track a hobby. The goal is to form a routine, not to achieve perfect gardening.”
Rinaldi agrees. “Some of my plants have died, and that’s okay. Each failure teaches you about light, water, and your own habits. It’s not about having a green thumb—it’s about building a small, sustainable relationship with nature,” he says. “That relationship, not the plant itself, is what improves well-being.”
28. What happened after Rinaldi added plants to his office?
A. He changed his career. B. He started an online business.
C. He founded a research group. D. He noticed better concentration.
29. What is a finding of Dr. Schmidt’s study?
A. Plants reduce anxiety levels. B. Plants increase sick leave rates.
C. Plants require constant attention. D. Plants decorate offices effectively.
30. Why does Kim Lee mention “25% fewer sick days”?
A. To stress the health risks of offices. B. To show the economic value of plants.
C. To prove the benefits of biophilic design. D. To explain the popularity of vertical gardens.
31. What does the author really want to convey about keeping plants in the last paragraph?
A. It requires professional knowledge. B. It depends on expensive equipment.
C. It is about developing a connection. D. It requires continuous learning from failures.
D
People have become used to living with AI fairly quickly, which has changed the way many of us communicate or deal with information. It has also led to serious concerns about jobs. Surely mass unemployment is coming soon?
But economic data tell a different story: EU unemployment is at a historical low of around 6%, half the level of ten years ago; the UK’s is even lower at 5.1%, roughly the level of the fast-growing early 2000s; that of the US is lower still at 4.4%. Jobs remain plentiful because technology creates new types of jobs.
But yes, AI will take away some jobs. A third of Americans worry they will lose theirs to AI, and many of them will be right. Since the industrial revolution, a wave of innovations has fueled extraordinary exponential economic growth. However, AI, like the computer, the internet, or the railways, is a slow revolution. And just as there has been no immediate AI boom when it comes to economic growth, there is no immediate change in employment. What we see instead are largely firms using AI as an excuse for standard job-cutting exercises. This then leads to a different question about how AI will affect the meaning of our jobs.
Another question raised by AI is whether it will reduce or increase the inequality between workers. At first, many thought that allowing everyone to use an AI assistant with skills in processing information or clear communication would decrease earning inequality. But other recent research found the opposite, with highly skilled businessmen gaining the most from using AI support. One reason for this is that taking advice is a skill in itself. In my own research with colleagues, we found that giving chess players top-quality advice does little to close the gap between the best and the worst because lower-ability players were less likely to follow high-quality advice. And perhaps that’s the biggest risk AI brings: that some people may benefit from it much more than others.
32.What do the economic data show?
A. Mass unemployment is coming soon. B. EU unemployment is higher than America’s.
C. Technology has cut job opportunities sharply. D. The UK’s unemployment matches the 1990s level.
33. What does the underlined word “exponential” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Irregular. B. Steady. C. Rapid. D. Unbalanced.
34. What can we infer about companies’ job cuts?
A. They result from AI’s direct influence. B. They are often done under the excuse of AI.
C. They make jobs more meaningful for workers. D. They cause an immediate employment change.
35. How does the author develop his idea in the last paragraph?
A. By quoting authoritative figures in the field.
B. By analyzing the cause and effect of inequality.
C. By explaining why people disagree with each other.
D. By presenting contrasting views and providing examples.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Surprising Benefits of Reading Slowly
In a world of quick videos and short posts, some teens are choosing a different path: they’re reading books slowly, sometimes just a chapter a day. This isn’t about finishing books fast—it’s about enjoying each page. And science shows it’s surprisingly good for you.
● Deeper Understanding
When you read slowly, your brain has time to really understand the story. 36 Slow reading lets you picture scenes clearly and think about characters’ motives. This deep understanding makes the experience more meaningful and memorable.
● Improved Focus
A study of high school students found that those who read slowly for 20 minutes daily improved their focus. 37 The practice trains your attention muscle, just like exercise trains your body. Over time, this skill helps in other areas like homework and conversations.
● Better Empathy(同理心)
Reading about characters from different backgrounds builds empathy. 38 This skill helps in real-life friendships and relationships. You become more patient and understanding toward others.
● 39_
Slow reading creates natural pauses. In those quiet moments, your mind makes connections between the book and your own life. You might remember a personal experience or gain new insight about a problem. Many readers keep a journal to record these personal insights.
● Stress Relief
Unlike social media that often brings anxiety, slow reading lowers stress. 40 As a result, many find they fall asleep more easily after reading instead of scrolling(滚屏). Creating this daily quiet time before bed is a form of self-care that costs nothing.
Finally, slow reading is a gift to yourself. In a busy schedule, it’s a small island of peace. You don’t need special tools—just a book, a quiet spot, and the willingness to slow down.
A. Keeping a Reading Journal
B. Personal Growth Through Reflection
C. This allows you to catch details that speed reading would miss.
D. The rhythm of words and the act of turning pages calm your nervous system.
E. This explains why some people prefer reading on social media in the evening.
F. When you slowly follow a character’s struggles, you practice seeing through their eyes.
G. They showed greater classroom concentration, participating more and asking more thoughtful questions.

Thirteen-year-old Sam lived in a remote village where farming was the primary livelihood. His family’s humble financial situation meant his father’s worn bicycle remained their only vehicle. Each afternoon, Sam undertook a three-mile walk home along a sun-beaten road—a journey whose length seemed to grow with every tired step under the hot sun.
One very hot September afternoon, Sam discovered an extremely thin dog resting weakly beneath a tree. The animal’s ribs were visible through its messy coat, a sight that conveyed a familiar ache of hunger. Without hesitation, Sam broke off the remaining part of his own small lunch—a dry piece of bread—and placed it near the dog. The creature accepted it with slow, grateful movements, its eyes reflecting a glimmer of life.
From that day, Sam secretly saved a little of his daily meal for the dog, naming it Rusty for its reddish-brown fur. Their daily meeting became the emotional center of Sam’s otherwise lonely routine. He would share stories of school life—struggles with math, small victories in football—while Rusty listened, tail wagging gently in response, a silent friend in the wide open field.
Disaster struck during a sudden afternoon storm. Dark clouds gathered without warning, transforming the familiar path into a slippery, dangerous trap. In his hurry to seek shelter, Sam’s foot caught on a hidden root. A sharp pain shot through his ankle as he fell heavily into the mud. Attempts to stand proved useless; his leg refused to hold his weight. The rain got heavier, each drop beating his skin, while the fading light limited his sight. Cold and completely alone, Sam felt a rising panic—night was coming, and no one would think to search this far-away part of the road.
