A Yale-led study warns that global climate change may have a destructive effect on many butterfly populations worldwide, turning their species-rich mountain habitats from shelters into traps.
Think of it as the “butterfly effect” — the idea that something as tiny as a butterfly moving its wings can eventually cause a big event like a hurricane — the opposite way around.
The new study, published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, also suggests that a lack of comprehensive global data about insects may leave conservationists and policymakers ill-prepared to mitigate biodiversity loss from climate change for a wide range of insect species.
For the study, a team co-led by Yale ecologist Walter Jetz analyzed phylogenetic (系统发育的) and geographic range data for more than 12,000 butterfly species worldwide. They found that butterfly diversity is highly grouped in tropical and subtropical mountain systems: two-thirds of butterfly species live mainly in the mountains, which contain 3. 5 times more butterfly hotspots than lowlands.
Yet those mountain ecosystems and surrounding areas are quickly changing as a result of climate change. According to the study, 64% of the specific temperature conditions for butterflies in tropical areas will disappear by 2070, as the unique temperature ranges in mountain regions continue to decrease.
Current priorities in biodiversity preservation, the researchers note, are aimed at animals and plants, rather than insects. Until now, a global assessment of the geographic coincidence (分布特征) of diversity, rarity, and climate change threats for an insect system did not exist.
The new assessment shows that patterns in butterfly diversity differ strongly from those of much better studied groups such as birds and mammals — challenging the relevance of existing conservation priorities, the researchers said.
“The diversity, elegance, and beauty of butterflies excite people all over the world,” said Jetz, a professor. “Butterflies live with plants and help maintain the balance of nature,” he added. “Unfortunately, our first global assessment of butterfly diversity and threats finds that butterflies fascinating adaptation to higher-elevation (较高海拔的) environments might now lead to their extinction, with potentially thousands of species committed to extinction from global warming this century.”
24.What does the underlined word “mitigate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Increase. B. Reduce. C. Prevent. D. Ignore.
25.Why do mountain systems become a threat to butterflies?
A. They are experiencing rapid climate shifts.
B. They provide inadequate food sources.
C. Their temperatures become unstable.
D. Their developing patterns change.
26.Why does the study challenge existing conservation frameworks?
A. Policy timelines mismatch extinction rates.
B. Insect data is contradictory to climate predictions.
C. Traditional models ignore elevation adaptations.
D. Shared areas with bird or mammal habitats decreases.
27.Which of the following statements would Jetz agree with?
A. Butterflies’ adaptability helps their living.
B. Ecosystem dependence enlarges climate threats.
C. Public liking effectively stops butterfly extinction.
D. High-elevation habitats make sure future species safety.

I had to say something after reading The Anxious Generation. It is going to sell well, because Jonathan Haidt is telling a scary story about children's development many parents are led to believe. However, the book's repeated suggestion that digital technologies are rewiring our children's brains and causing the epidemic (流行病) of mental illness is unsupported by science. Worse, the rude proposal that social media is to blame might distract (分心) us from effectively responding to the real causes of the current mental-health crisis in young people.
Researchers have searched for the effects suggested by Haidt. Our efforts have produced a mix of no,small and mixed associations. Most data are correlative. When associations over time are found, they suggest not that social-media use predicts or causes depression, but that young people who already have mental-health problems use such platforms more often or in different ways from their healthy peers.
We are not alone here. Several analyses and systematic reviews centralize on the same message. An analysis done in 72 countries shows no consistent or measurable associations between well-being and social media globally. Moreover, studies from some authorities finds no evidence of intense changes associated with digital-technology use.
As a psychologist studying children's and adolescents' mental health,I appreciate parents' frustration (沮丧) and desire for simple answers. As a parent of adolescents,I would also like to identify a simple source for the pain this generation is reporting. There are, however,no simple answers. The beginning and development of mental disorders are driven by a complex set of genetic and environmental factors.
More young people are talking openly about their mental-health struggles than ever before. But insufficient services are available to address their needs. In the United States, there is,on average, one school psychologist for every 1,119 students. We have a generation in crisis and in desperate need of the best of what science and evidence-based solutions can offer. Unfortunately, our time is being spent telling stories that are unsupported by research and that do little to support young people who need, and deserve, more.
28.What is presented in The Anxious Generation?
A. Scary stories affect children's brains.
B. Parents are responsible for children's health.
C. Teen's mental illness results from screen time.
D. The epidemic of mental illness is unavoidable.
29.What does “the same message” underlined in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Many countries do research in mental health.
B. Well-being and social media are closely related.
C. The young are trapped in the mental-health crisis.
D. Social media don't necessarily cause mental illness.
30.What is implied in the last paragraph?
A. Effective actions need to be taken.
B. Positive stories should be shared.
C. Financial support needs to be provided.
D. Broader research should be done.
31.What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To suggest ways to help those in need.
B. To encourage parents to brave the crisis.
C. To recommend a newly-published book.
D. To give a voice to children's mental issues.
D

Although many people still like to have three main meals a day, others are choosing a lighter way of eating rather than substantial meals. 36 . The important thing is to make sure you choose healthy foods.
37
The demands of modern life mean that we don’t always have the opportunity to sit down and eat three meals a day. For some people, the pressures of combining work and family leave little time for food preparation. Others regularly eat on their own and don’t want to bother cooking a full meal.
Focus on nutrients
There is no “right” way of eating, as long as you take in all the nutrients your body requires. 38 . Boredom or stress can drive us to the fridge, or corner shop. If you make sure all your snacks are nutritious ones, as well as lower in fat and sugar, you are less likely to eat beyond your body's needs.
Choose healthy snacks
Starchy carbohydrates (淀粉类碳水化合物) have a lot to offer nutritionally and make excellent choices as the basis both for snacks and for lunch. 39 . Fresh fruits or vegetables are both excellent choices for a light snack. Although not as filling as starchy carbohydrate foods, some of them are high in disease-fighting vitamins.
Make time for lunch
40 , most of us try to make time for lunch, even if it is just a “light bite”—a sandwich in the office, or a simple hot dish in the canteen. Lunch is an essential pause in the middle of the day, a chance to relax and recharge our batteries a little.
A. As we are familiar with our habits
B. Either option is equally acceptable

At the age of 17, Jack was a typical high school student on the surface. He had a group of friends, participated in some school activities, and was an average student academically. However, deep inside, he was in a constant state of confusion and self-doubt.
Jack had always been pushed by his parents to follow a certain path. They wanted him to study engineering in college, believing it would lead to a stable and prosperous future. But Jack had a hidden passion for art. He loved to draw and paint, spending countless hours in his room, creating beautiful landscapes and portraits on his canvases.
One day, a well-known art competition was announced in the city. The theme was “The True Self”. Jack was immediately drawn to it. This was a chance for him to express himself through his art, to show the world who he really was. But he was extremely hesitant. He knew that if his parents found out he was participating in an art competition, they would be furious.
Jack’s best friend, Tom, noticed his inner conflict. “Jack, you have to go for it. This is your chance to discover who you truly are. Don’t let your parents’ expectations hold you back,” Tom encouraged him. With Tom’s words echoing in his mind, Jack decided to secretly enter the competition.
He worked day and night on his painting. It was a self-portrait that showed the different sides of his personality — the obedient (顺从的) son on the surface, but beneath that, a passionate artist longing to break free. As the submission (提交) deadline approached, Jack was both excited and terrified.
Finally, the day of the submission arrived. Jack carefully wrapped his painting and took it to the competition venue. As he placed his work on the table, he felt a sense of liberation, as if a part of him had finally been set free.
A few weeks later, Jack received an email from the competition organizers. His heart skipped a beat as he opened it. The email informed him that his painting had made it to the final round! He was overjoyed, but at the same time, the fear of his parents’ reaction grew stronger.

24. B【解析】词义猜测题。根据第三段中的“... a lack of comprehensive global data about insects may leave conservationists and policymakers ill-prepared to mitigate biodiversity loss from climate change”可知,缺乏数据导致保护者难以“减轻”气候变化对生物多样性的损失,故mitigate意为“减少”,与reduce同义。故选B。

27. B【解析】推理判断题。由最后一段中的“butterflies’ fascinating adaptation to higher-elevation environments might now lead to their extinction”可知,Jetz认为蝴蝶对高海拔生态系统的依赖反而因气候变化加剧了灭绝风险,即生态系统依赖放大了气候威胁。故选B。

30. A【解析】推理判断题。根据最后一段中“We have a generation in crisis. . . support young people who need,and deserve,more. ”可知,针对年轻人的心理健康问题,我们正在浪费时间讲述没有研究支持的故事,而这些故事对需要帮助的年轻人并没有帮助,这暗示我们需要采取有效的行动来解决这个问题。故选A。

【参考范文】
Jack’s excitement disappeared when he realized that the final round required him to show his work in person at a public event. The thought of his parents possibly discovering his secret filled him with dread. What if they attended the event and saw his painting? Would they understand, or would they be disappointed in him? For days, Jack struggled with this dilemma. Tom urged him not to give up, saying, “This is your moment to be honest with yourself and others.” After much internal conflict, Jack decided to face his fears.
On the day of the event, Jack stood in front of the large crowd, holding his painting. His hands trembled as he unveiled the self-portrait. Murmurs of admiration rippled through the audience. Suddenly, he spotted his parents at the back of the room, their eyes fixed on his artwork. Jack’s heart pounded, but he continued to share the story behind the painting, speaking of his struggle to reconcile his parents’ expectations with his own dreams. When he finished, there was a moment of silence before the crowd broke into warm applause. His parents walked forward, and his mother said softly, “We had no idea how much this means to you.” His father nodded, adding, “Your courage to pursue your truth is what truly matters.”
