In a mountain village in southwest China, 72-year-old Li Guilin has spent 35 years turning dry hills into a thick forest, an achievement many thought impossible. When Li was a young man in the 1980s, the red soil hills surrounding his village were so poor that even weeds (野草) struggled to grow. Heavy summer rains would rush down the bare slopes, causing mudslides that buried farmland and destroyed adobe houses. “In 1983, a flash flood swept away my neighbor’s three cows and their entire wheat harvest,” Li recalled, gesturing toward the now-green hills. “That night I couldn’t sleep. I knew I had to fix this, even if it took my whole life.”
In 1991, Li began his task alone. Every dawn, he would walk 5 kilometers to the nearest spring, carry 20-liter buckets of water up 45-degree slopes, and plant 50 young trees daily. His straw shoes wore through every two weeks, and his palms developed hard skin so thick they felt like tree bark. “Villagers called me ‘the hill fool’,” Li joked. “They said I was wasting time when I should be growing potatoes. Once, my own brother hid my tools to make me stop.” During cold winters, he wrapped saplings (树苗) in straw to protect them from frost, and during droughts, he carried water even when his knees trembled with tiredness.
Today, the once-empty hills are covered with over 200,000 trees. The forest now holds 80% more rainfall, and sudden floods haven’t occurred in 15 years. Villagers have planted 50 acres of apple orchards and vegetable patches, increasing annual household (家庭的) income from 800 yuan to over 12,000 yuan. Last spring, 30 university students from Chengdu camped here to learn Li’s tree-planting techniques, and his story has inspired over 2,000 urban volunteers to join reforestation projects across Sichuan province.
“I’m just an ordinary farmer,” Li said modestly. “I didn’t do anything special. I just kept going when others gave up. If one person can make a difference, imagine what a group of people can do.”
24. Why did Li Guilin decide to plant trees?
A. To follow the villagers’ advice. B. To earn money by selling trees.
C. To protect his village from floods. D. To become famous in his hometown.
25. What can we infer from Paragraph 2 about Li Guilin?
A. He was strong-willed and patient. B. He was supported by most villagers.
C. He had rich experience in planting trees. D. He gave up several times due to difficulties.
26. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Villagers started to grow fruit trees and vegetables.
B. Li Guilin planted more than 200,000 trees in 35 years.
C. Li Guilin’s efforts brought great changes to his village.
D. Young people came to learn tree-planting from Li Guilin.
27. What message does Li Guilin’s story convey?
A. Old people are wiser than young people. B. Wealth comes from nothing but hard work.
C. Environmental protection is everyone’s duty. D. Determination can lead to extraordinary results.

Smart driving, which has been a buzzword in China for quite some time, is gaining further attention, as the government and car companies have called for cautious use of the vague (模糊的) term.
Vehicle automation is divided into six levels, from Level 0 to 5, according to the Society of Automotive Engineers. Functions available in passenger vehicles in China are Level 2, usually known as driving-assist functions, but many carmakers refer to them as smart driving in marketing campaigns, which sound more advanced than they actually are. A great number of car buyers tend to buy into the hype (炒作) as well, believing that their cars are capable of autonomous driving, which in fact belongs to Level 4 or 5.
At a technology meeting on Wednesday, Voyah CEO Lu Fang said carmakers should let car buyers know the capabilities of the specific models they choose. “Safety is the baseline. They must know what their vehicles can do. Also, you shall never confuse them with those vague ideas,” said Lu. “The very purpose of tools of transport is to move things and people from point A to point B safely. So safety is a topic you can never avoid.” he said. In a previous interview, Lu said he sometimes got angry at the videos that went viral online, where some bragged about how smart their vehicles were.
“Safety is the best policy.” said Yu Chengdong, a Huawei executive, when he introduced new models on Wednesday. On the same day, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology organized a meeting and told automakers that they must thoroughly test advanced driver assistance systems, clearly define system boundaries and safety response measures, and avoid misleading marketing. They must also fulfill their duty to inform users, and take full responsibility for product quality and safety.
Since last year, the popularity of smart driving technologies have seen explosive growth. In 2024, 8.67 million passenger vehicles in the Chinese market were delivered with Level 2 systems, accounting for more than 41 percent of the total.
28. Which level should a car at least reach to have the ability to drive autonomously?
A. Level 0. B. Level 3. C. Level 4. D. Level 5.
29. Why do carmakers call Level 2 functions smart driving in marketing?
A. To accurately describe the functions of their vehicles.
B. To follow the industry standards of smart driving vehicles.
C. To make their products seem more advanced and attractive.
D. To confirm Level 2 functions are actually equal to smart driving.
30. Which can replace the underlined phrase “bragged about” in paragraph 3?
A. Showed off. B. Complained about.
C. Reflected on. D. Commented on.
31. What can be learned from the passages?
A. More car buyers will be misled by smart driving carmakers.
B. The government’s measures will stop the hype of smart driving.
C. The development of smart-driving technologies will slow down.
D. Carmakers continuing misleading consumers might be punished.
D
The variety of bacteria (细菌) in our guts (肠道) has been used as a measure of overall health for years now. But recent studies suggest that what makes the guts of centenarians (people who live to be 100 or older) different is not the variety of bacteria species living there, but the balanced spread of those species.
A 2023 study looked at the guts of over 1,500 people, including 297 centenarians. Dr Shuai Wang at China’s Guangxi Academy of Sciences says that while this study’s findings support the idea that centenarians have special gut bacteria linked to their long life, it showed that rather than variety, their good health was better reflected by balance.
In fact, says Wang, “in many diseases, the variety of gut bacteria can be greater in sick patients than healthy people. This increase often happens due to a loss of gut barrier (屏障) resistance, allowing rare bacteria or bacteria that usually live elsewhere to settle there.” In older adults, he says, “A weaker gut barrier can cause a sudden increase of rare gut bacteria, which may lead to more types of bacteria, but not necessarily bring any extra health benefits.” The key to improving a weak gut barrier is fibre. Eating a high-fibre diet with plenty of vegetables keeps those barriers strong, and so does avoiding alcohol.
Dr Mary Ni Lochlainn is another expert who thinks that bacterial variety isn’t everything. She ran an experiment providing older twins with prebiotic (益生元) fibre and found that “they all had a decrease in variety, because the prebiotic was causing certain bacteria to grow,” she says. “But they also all had improved cognition (认知), so it shows me the limitation of variety.”
While variety may not be the most important thing for gut health, it can still play a positive role in later life. A 2016 study into weakness and the gut by Lochlainn’s colleagues at King’s found a link between weakness and lower bacterial variety.
32. What is the key to centenarians’ good health according to Dr Shuai Wang?
A. A high-fibre diet with vegetables.
B. A wide variety of gut bacteria.
C. The strong function of gut barriers.
D. A balanced spread of gut bacteria.
33. Why do some sick patients have higher gut bacterial variety?
A. They take some vitamin pills.
B. They eat more fibre-rich food.
C. Their gut barrier becomes weaker.
D. Their illness leads to more bacteria.
34. What can be inferred from the experiment led by Dr Mary Ni Lochlainn?
A. Higher bacterial variety can improve cognition.
B. Lower bacterial variety may not harm cognition.
C. Prebiotic fibre can promote people’s physical health.
D. Prebiotic fibre increases the total number of bacteria.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Secret of Long Life: Regular Exercise.
B. Prebiotic Fibre: The Way to a Healthy Gut.
C. Weakening Gut Barrier: Survival of Rare Bacteria.
D. Balance Over Variety: A New View on Gut Health.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写词数应为150个左右。
The final bell pierced through the drowsy (昏昏入睡的) afternoon. Emma stared at the blank notebook page, her palms beginning to sweat. Sunlight slanted (斜照) through classroom windows, shedding light on her fingers covered with pencil stains (污渍). Her throat tightened — two hours wasted, and not a single sentence. She had promised teacher a story for the writing competition by 5 p.m., but her mind was empty and echoing with abandoned daydreams. “Maybe I could go to library and surf on the Internet for inspiration”, she murmured to herself.
Outside, dark clouds covered the sun. She rushed past rain-stained windows. At the school gate, a whimper (呜咽声) reached her ears. A golden-furred puppy lay in messy fallen leaves, its left paw twisted at an unnatural angle. Obviously, it got hurt — fresh blood dirtied its white fur. Emma wanted to reach her hands at first. However, her phone screen read 2:45 p.m.
“Focus on your future!” Mom’s words from last night recalled, sharp as broken glass. The creative writing summer camp scholarship wasn’t just about her future; it was a chance to prove to her parents that she had a gift for writing.
Thinking of this, she planned to walk towards the bus stop, but the puppy’s whimper turned into loud, as if it was asking for her help. Raindrops began hitting her notebook, meanwhile, hitting her heart. Turning around, she noticed an advertisement on the wall beside her, which listed the address of Mrs. Patterson’s animal hospital, about two blocks northeast. But the library was in the opposite direction. It was so difficult for her to make a choice between them.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: Raindrops were falling as Emma bit her lip.

【原文】W: Alex, do you know that the school volunteer activity will be held this weekend?
M: Yeah, I’ve already signed up. I’ll help to clean up the local park. How about you?
W: My parents won’t let me go. They consider it a waste of time. It’s so unfair because my sister often participates in these activities.
M: That’s really unfortunate. But what exactly makes them think volunteering is not worth the time?
W: They’re overly concerned about my studies. They believe that every moment should be devoted to studying. However, I think volunteering offers valuable experiences that textbooks can’t provide.
M: I totally agree. Perhaps you could have another in-depth conversation with them. Mention how volunteering can improve our communication skills, introduce us to different people, and even relieve study stress.
W: I’ve already tried. I explained how it can broaden my horizons and help me grow as a person. But they were stubborn. Luckily, my sister said she’d talk to them on my behalf.
M: Hope it works out.

【答案】24. C 25. A 26. C 27. D

【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“In 1983, a flash flood swept away my neighbor’s three cows and their entire wheat harvest,” Li recalled, gesturing toward the now-green hills. “That night I couldn’t sleep. I knew I had to fix this, even if it took my whole life.(李桂林望向如今绿意盎然的群山回忆道:1983年,一场山洪冲走了邻居的三头牛和全部小麦收成。那天夜里我彻夜难眠,我必须改变现状,哪怕耗尽一生。)”可知,山洪带来巨大灾害,为保护村庄免受洪水侵袭,他下定决心植树造林。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Every dawn, he would walk 5 kilometers to the nearest spring, carry 20-liter buckets of water up 45-degree slopes, and plant 50 young trees daily.(每天黎明,他步行五公里去往最近的泉水处,挑着二十升的水桶爬上四十五度陡坡,每日栽种五十棵树苗。)”以及“During cold winters, he wrapped saplings in straw to protect them from frost, and during droughts, he carried water even when his knees trembled with tiredness.(寒冬用稻草包裹树苗防冻,干旱时节纵使双腿疲惫颤抖,仍坚持挑水浇灌。)”可知,尽管条件艰苦,他始终坚持每天种树,由此可推断他意志坚定且极具耐心。
【26题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“Today, the once-empty hills are covered with over 200,000 trees. The forest now holds 80% more rainfall, and sudden floods haven’t occurred in 15 years. Villagers have planted 50 acres of apple orchards and vegetable patches, increasing annual household (家庭的) income from 800 yuan to over 12,000 yuan.
【答案】28. C 29. C 30. A 31. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述智能驾驶术语被炒作及政府车企的应对措施。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“A great number of car buyers tend to buy into the hype (炒作) as well, believing that their cars are capable of autonomous driving, which in fact belongs to Level 4 or 5.(许多购车者也倾向于相信炒作,认为他们的汽车具备自动驾驶能力,而这实际上属于4级或5级)”可知,汽车至少要达到4级才能具备自动驾驶能力。故选C。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Functions available in passenger vehicles in China are Level 2, usually known as driving-assist functions, but many carmakers refer to them as smart driving in marketing campaigns, which sound more advanced than they actually are.(在中国,乘用车可用的功能是2级,通常被称为驾驶辅助功能,但许多汽车制造商在营销活动中将其称为智能驾驶,这听起来比实际更先进)”可知,汽车制造商在营销中将2级功能称为智能驾驶是为了使他们的产品看起来更先进、更有吸引力。故选C。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“In a previous interview, Lu said he sometimes got angry at the videos that went viral online, where some bragged about how smart their vehicles were.(在之前的一次采访中,卢表示,他有时会对网上疯传的视频感到愤怒,视频中一些人bragged about他们的车有多智能)”可知,卢感到愤怒,是因为他觉得网上一些人过分炫耀自己的车有多智能,所以“bragged about”的意思是“炫耀”,与“Showed off”意思相近。故选A。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“On the same day, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology organized a meeting and told automakers that they must thoroughly test advanced driver assistance systems, clearly define system boundaries and safety response measures, and avoid misleading marketing. They must also fulfill their duty to inform users, and take full responsibility for product quality and safety.(同一天,工业和信息化部组织了一次会议,并告诉汽车制造商,他们必须彻底测试高级驾驶辅助系统,明确界定系统边界和安全响应措施,并避免误导性营销。他们还必须履行告知用户的义务,并对产品质量和安全承担全部责任)”可推知,如果汽车制造商继续误导消费者,他们可能会受到惩罚。故选D。
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. B 35. D
【解析】
【导语】文章主要讨论了肠道细菌种类与健康之间的关系,特别是关于长寿者肠道细菌的特点。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“But recent studies suggest that what makes the guts of centenarians (people who live to be 100 or older) different is not the variety of bacteria species living there, but the balanced spread of those species.(但近期研究表明,百岁老人(寿命达到 100 岁及以上的人)肠道的独特之处,不在于肠道内细菌物种的种类多少,而在于这些菌种分布的均衡性)”可知,百岁老人健康的关键是肠道细菌的平衡分布。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“In fact, says Wang, “in many diseases, the variety of gut bacteria can be greater in sick patients than healthy people. This increase often happens due to a loss of gut barrier (屏障) resistance, allowing rare bacteria or bacteria that usually live elsewhere to settle there.” (王博士表示:“事实上,在许多疾病中,患者肠道细菌的种类多样性反而会高于健康人群。这种细菌种类增多的现象,通常是因为肠道屏障抵抗力下降,使得稀有细菌或原本栖息在身体其他部位的细菌得以在肠道内定植存活。”)”可知,有些病人的肠道细菌种类更多是因为他们的肠道屏障抵抗力丧失,肠道屏障变弱了。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“She ran an experiment providing older twins with prebiotic (益生元) fibre and found that “they all had a decrease in variety, because the prebiotic was causing certain bacteria to grow,” she says. “But they also all had improved cognition (认知), so it shows me the limitation of variety.”(她说,她做了一项实验,给老年双胞胎补充益生元膳食纤维,结果发现:他们肠道细菌的种类多样性全都下降了,因为益生元促使特定细菌大量繁殖。“但他们的认知能力反而都得到了改善,这也让我看到了(细菌)多样性这一指标的局限性。”)”可知,玛丽·尼·洛赫兰博士的实验表明,虽然益生元纤维导致肠道细菌种类减少,但受试者的认知能力却得到了提高,这说明较低的细菌种类多样性可能不会损害认知能力。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“The variety of bacteria in our guts has been used as a measure of overall health for years now.(多年来,我们肠道中的细菌种类一直被用作衡量整体健康的标准)”,第二段“it showed that rather than variety, their good health was better reflected by balance.(这表明,与多样性相比,他们的健康状况更能通过平衡来反映)”和最后一段“While variety may not be the most important thing for gut health, it can still play a positive role in later life.(虽然多样性可能不是肠道健康最重要的因素,但它仍然可以在以后的生活中发挥积极作用)”可知,文章主要讨论了肠道细菌种类与健康之间的关系,特别是关于长寿者肠道细菌的特点,即肠道细菌的平衡分布比细菌种类的多样性更为重要。因此,短文的合适标题是D选项“平衡优于多样性:肠道健康的新观点”。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
Raindrops were falling as Emma bit her lip. Finally, she made a decision. Gently picking up the puppy, Emma rushed in the direction of Mrs. Patterson’s animal hospital. The hospital’s sign swung violently in the storm as she burst through the door. Mrs. Patterson carefully checked and treated the wounded puppy, and suddenly Emma had an idea: she could write the puppy and the animal hospital into her story. “No time to waste!” With Mrs. Patterson’s permission, she borrowed her laptop, sat at a corner table and immediately focused on her story, which poured out like the rain streaming down the glass. Eventually, she managed to submit the story at 4:59 p.m. and breathed a sigh of relief.
Paragraph 2:
Two weeks later, an email arrived with the first word reading “Congratulations!” Emma’s heart raced as she opened it, finding the following message in the email: “Your story has been awarded special honors.” Hard to contain her thrill, she rushed out to Mrs. Patterson’s animal hospital, hoping to share the good news with her right away and thank her and the puppy for inspiring her. After listening to Emma’s words, Mrs. Patterson expressed congratulations to Emma and said, “You deserve it! Not only your unique perspective and creative imagination but also your golden heart helps you win the honor!”
