71 years after starting college, a 90-year-old woman, Joyce Viola DeFauw, was graduating this year. She first entered college in 1951, studying early education, and later, home economics. She left school after three and a half years due to marriage.
The mom of nine, who is now also a grandmother to 17 and great-grandmother to 26, was busy through the years but never forgot about college.“I must have told the children that I wish I had finished back in the 1950s,” DeFauw recalled. “They suggested that I go back and I thought ‘Well, OK.’” Since the pandemic began in 2019, instead of walking to campus to attend classes, she did so behind a computer screen from her retirement home.“I needed a computer and they got one for me and so I’ve been able to use it and enjoy it.”
DeFauw re-entered Northern Illinois University (NIU) in August 2019 and began to take online courses toward a bachelor’s degree (学士学位) in general studies. Although there were times when she struggled with the courses and even thought about giving up, DeFauw kept doing schoolwork almost every day. “We get to exchange ideas and things through the computer and I’ve had wonderful instructors that guided me,” DeFauw said. “As far as the encouragement of everyone — my friends, my family and my teachers — I just can’t give up.”
Three years later, she put on the cap and gown and received a Bachelor of General Studies degree from the university. DeFauw felt very happy and thankful for being able to achieve her big milestone. NIU President Dr. Lisa Freeman praised DeFauw as an “inspiration” to others. “DeFauw is a pioneer and now a Northern Illinois University graduate,” Freeman said. “She has beautifully shown that earning a degree is never late at any age. For anyone still looking to realize your dreams, just go for it. There’s so much that life offers, and you will miss out on if you don’t take advantage of it.”
4. How many majors has DeFauw studied at college?

Big Basin Redwoods State Park is recovering after a natural disaster—fires heavily damaged California’s oldest protected natural area. Lightning storms caused more than 650 fires in Northern California. But during a guided visit recently, life was hopefully reappearing on blackened redwood trees. Small flowers stood out on the burned land.
The big park used to have about 1 million visitors a year. But one year ago, many parts of the park burned for 24 hours. More than 100 structures were sabotaged, including the main part of the historic park, shelters, picnic tables and more. Many bridges were gone, too. In some places, roots are still smoking, leaving dangerous underground areas. Repair experts have been trying to identify materials and waste that need to be removed. In many ways, the park does not look much different than it did soon after fires.
Most of the ancient redwoods have survived. Astonishingly, the trees are about 2, 000 years old and among the tallest living things on Earth. The next 8 to 10 months will be spent cleaning up the park. It will be up to a year before the public can safely use the paths beyond a small coastal area.
Environmentalists have urged quick action because state officials are currently providing funds for wildfire recovery efforts and new building projects. This change provides a rare chance to get more money for public lands.
Barth is the director of Sempervirens Fund. That group started an effort in 1900 to pro-tect 15.5 square kilometers of redwood forest that is now in the center of Big Basin. “When Big Basin was set up, it was a sign of hope for the state park’s system,” she said. Barth added, “In this fire and rebirth, you have an opportunity again.” Redwoods are naturally fire-resistant (防火的). In old-growth forests, most trees have burn marks dating back hundreds of years.
8. What does the author feel about the recovery of the park?
A. Hopeful. B. Anxious. C. Curious. D. Doubtful.
9. What does the underlined word “sabotaged” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Rebuilt. B. Copied. C. Protected. D. Destroyed.
10. What do we know about the redwoods?
A. They are amazingly tall. B. They have a short history.
C. Few of them have survived. D. Most of them have no burn marks.
11. What did Barth think of building Big Basin?
A. It was for funds. B. It was effortless.
C. It was praiseworthy. D. It was against nature.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. A 11. C

A company says its team has created a new powerful supercomputer that is expected to be the world’s fastest when completed later this year. Recently, the company has announced the computer will be used to create better artificial intelligence(AI) models and improve operations that process huge amounts of data.
Supercomputers are made up of hundreds or thousands of powerful machines. They work together to perform difficult operations that are not possible with normal computing systems. The company’s supercomputer is currently operating.
The company calls it the AI Research Super Cluster, or RSC in a statement. It says RSC will help the company’s AI researchers build better AI models that can learn from plenty of examples. The company does not provide information on where the computer is kept or how much money is being spent to build it. An AI system can be trained to recognize different kinds of contents and perform actions examining huge amounts of data. Such systems require very powerful computers.
The company says its supercomputer will be able to process written information, images and videos that are in hundreds of different languages. It specially mentions the computing system can process images and video up to 20 times faster than current systems. The company is expected to use the system for its services. The company believes RSC is currently one of the world’s five fastest supercomputers It says RSC will become the fastest when fully operating.
In addition, the company hopes RSC will help in the development of completely new Al systems. One example is a planned tool that will permit real-time voice translations to large groups of people interacting in business or social situations. Such an operation fits with the company’s stated goal of developing technologies to be used in a future “metaverse” which is a term used to describe a non-physical world in which people interact through different kinds of digital technologies.

A small boy was packing his school bag in his room, a room filled with books. Many were novels and some were short stories; many were new and some were yellowed with age; many were detective stories and some were fairy tales. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. The small boy called Frank turned his wheelchair (轮椅) to his right and slowly opened the door. As usual it was his mom, who wanted Frank to get ready for school. Frank had his breakfast, said goodbye to his mom and started his travel to the school in his wheelchair. Frank had lost his leg when he was eight in an accident. He had to spend the rest of the life in the wheelchair. But the accident did not take away his trust in life, and he wanted to be a writer. His mother also supported his dream. Frank had not wanted to go to the school for the handicapped (残疾人). So he had joined an ordinary school.
On the way to school, he met his loving and kind-hearted friend, Lawrence. Lawrence wheeled his friend quickly and talked with him happily. He told Lawrence that there would be a story competition next week. Lawrence encouraged him to take part in it. Lawrence said, “Trust yourself. You can make it!” They reached the school in thirty minutes. Lawrence said bye to Frank and they both went to their classes.
Slowly days passed, and the Formative Exams started. They ended within a week. “Frank, the score is 100,”said the class teacher cheerfully. Frank was very happy because he had scored full marks. He wheeled his chair and again met Lawrence on the way. This time both stopped on the side and Lawrence said, “Try to take part in the story competition.” “OK, thank you, Lawrence,” said Frank excitedly. He rushed home, and wrote something on a piece of paper. His mom was very happy to see her son cheerful and excited. Actually he was going to write a short story to take part in the competition. But he didn’t know how to finish it.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】参考范文:
Just then, his mother entered and told him that Lawrence was coming. When Frank saw his mother and Lawrence, he told them what he thought about. He was afraid of not writing well and failure. They kept encouraging him and gave him courage. “Try your best!” they said. Lawrence gave some suggestions and turned to the local library to help him with a better story. Finally, with their help, and his own hard working, he finished his short story. He sent this story to the competition organizers.
As all the judges (评判员) read Frank’s story, they were amazed by his brilliance (才华). The lines and story itself moved them. All the judges gave their best comments on it. Frank’s story won the first prize, and he became the best writer in the junior section. The moment he got the news, Frank went back home quickly and told his mother about it. “Congratulations, my dear. You are worth the success.” She hugged Frank tightly in her arms. Soon Lawrence and more people came to Frank’s house and cheered for Frank.

A. It may make cooperation impossible.
B. It may perform well in operating data.
C. It has replaced normal computing systers.
D. It has become the world’s fastest computer.
13. Which of the following is clear about the supercomputer?

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
