Paris is a city of many stories, including those of the first female taxi drivers in the early 20th century. While women have always been a minority in the field of taxi drivers, they have participated since the beginning of driving motor cars for hire. In 1908, the Ford Model T rolled off assembly lines to make history in America, and automobiles began to be mass-produced, which paved the way for two exceptional Parisian women to be female taxi drivers.
Mademoiselle Gaby Pohlen was an adventurer who enjoyed travelling, riding bikes, and driving cars, According to The Motor-Car Journal in 1908, she began driving in 1902. To drive a taxi, as motorized cars began to take on this previously horse-drawn role, she would need to be both licensed and hired by a taxi company. Pohlen received her license to drive a motor taxi in 1908, but as she told the reporter for the magazine, the trouble was getting hired. After all, at that time, the public threw doubt over female driving skills. After repeated rejections, she was at last accepted by a taxi company. She became one of the first female taxi drivers in history, and was joined by Madame Ines Decourcelle also in 1908. There appears to be some debate over which woman technically hit the streets first, but certainly, both were pioneers.
In 1908, Pohlen expressed a desire to drive in a “speed race.” Whether she ever managed this challenge or not, female drivers were edging into the man’s world as more and more people purchased cars. In 1909, Dorothy Levitt published a “chatty” guidebook for female motorists. Levitt was a champion car and boat racer, and she became a champion of women drivers.
Levitt and the pioneering female taxi drivers of Paris were conscious of the new frontiers open to women who had the skill and daring to drive their own cars. While cars remain a male passion today, the long history of women loving the freedom and speed of the open road or making their living on wheels makes the history of the car equally a woman's tale.
4. Why is the launch of assembly lines of Ford Model T mentioned?
A. To mark a significant moment in car history. B. To stress the ripe time for female taxi drivers.
C. To emphasize the popularity of Ford in Paris. D. To prove female drivers’ preference for Ford.
5. What is the real barrier for Pohlen to be a female taxi driver?
A. Finding a taxi company. B. People’s gender prejudice.
C. Her terrible driving ability. D. Getting the driving license.
6. What can we conclude from the last two paragraphs?
A. Women play a role in male-dominated fields. B. Women drivers are in the majority nowadays.
C. Women are pushing back the frontiers of science. D. Women are winning more car-racing champions.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. A good chance for female taxi drivers in Paris B. Car racing, an adventurous field for women
C. Pioneering female taxi drivers in car history D. Taxi driving, a popular profession for women

As advancements in AI continue to unfold, robots are emerging as a transformative force in the elderly care industry across China. With innovations ranging from feeding robots to those designed for recovery and hygiene (卫生) assistance, an increasing range of age-friendly tech products is being introduced to support seniors.
These cutting-edge solutions are making up for traditional family-based care models, announcing a new era in the way we approach elder care.
Recently, cities such as Shanghai and Xi’an, have launched innovative smart elderly care initiatives aimed at enhancing the combined development of elderly care services and related industries. This move came in response to the rising interest in smart elderly care.
Many nursing homes in Chinese cities are now integrating intelligent care robots into their operations. For example, at a home care center in Fuzhou, a group of seniors averaging 86 years old are enjoying a more convenient and dynamic lifestyle thanks to the introduction of “smart nannies.” Among the cutting-edge technologies being employed to assist seniors with disabilities are robotic “caregivers,” multifunctional transfer bed-chairs, and fall-detection alarms.
In 2024, a resident from Shenzhen, Guangdong, surnamed Xia, invested nearly 30,000 yuan in a toileting care robot for his 80-year-old bedridden grandfather, which can help him stand and walk for toileting. It can automatically sense needs and perform fully automated processes. Since its introduction, this toileting care robot has greatly eased the caregiving burden on family members. “It’s much less exhausting now. When the drain water tank is full, we just empty the wastewater and refill it with clean water,” Xia said.
He expressed hope for more walking-assist robots, noting that the high cost of current models remains a barrier for many families.
Chen Zhengxiang, an AI model trainer based in Suzhou, East China’s Jiangsu Province, has conducted research in many nursing homes across the country. He told the Global Times that current robots on the market still have shortcomings in human-robot interaction. For instance, they struggle to recognize commands spoken in local dialects, and their emotional interactions remain at a programmed response level.
8. What is mainly talked about in the first paragraph?
A. Robots are transforming Chinese industry.
B. Tech products help the elderly live longer.
C. Elderly care robots see growing popularity.
D. AI speeds up the production of care robots.
9. What can robots at a home care center in Fuzhou do?
A. Help doctors operate on the sick elderly.
B. Pick seniors up who fall to the ground.
C. Make nursing homes easily accessible.
D. Move seniors in a more convenient way.
10. What does the underlined word “bedridden” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Having limited mobility. B. Abandoned to diseases.
C. Lack of consciousness. D. Unable to express oneself.
11. What does the author want to stress about elderly car robots in the last paragraph?
A. Extensive market prospects. B. The room for improvement.
C. The difficulty in training them. D. Potential application in nursing.

Forget facial recognition technology — researchers say they can identify you from the veins on the backs of your hands. Biometric recognition has become more common in recent years. Facial recognition technology is used everywhere from airport check-in lines to police departments and even nightclubs, while iris, fingerprint and voice recognition is used across a variety of areas, for security purposes.
However, researchers from Australia's University of New South Wales say that some biometric methods have obvious weaknesses. “Fingerprints can be collected from a surface someone has touched and copied to create an unreal print, facial recognition technology could be bypassed using images collected from social media, and contact lenses could be used to confuse iris-based mechanisms,” said Syed Shah, a researcher at the University of New South Wales’ School of Computer Science and Engineering.
“Vein patterns lie underneath the skin, so they do not leave any mark, unlike fingerprints; vein patterns are not available over social media, unlike facial photographs; besides, vein patterns cannot be obtained without anyone knowing, unlike irises,” explained Shah in an email. “Therefore, we believe that a vein-based approach will be much more difficult to bypass.”
Using an off-the-shelf depth camera — Intel RealSense Depth Camera D415, researchers took some 17,500 images of 35 people, where participants made a fist to establish the vein patterns of the hand. Using artificial intelligence, researchers extracted “discriminating features” from these patterns, which could then be used to identify an individual with more than 99% accuracy from a group of 35 participants. “The requirement of making a fist for vein extraction makes it difficult for other people to obtain vein patterns secretly,” Shah explained.
Although the idea of using veins to identify people is not new, Shah’s team claims that their study, published in IET Biometrics, shows the technique could be used for identifying individuals on personal devices, such as laptops and mobile phones.
12. According to Shah, which biometric method has the highest level of privacy?
A. Facial recognition. B. Iris-based mechanisms.
C. Fingerprint scan. D. Vein pattern recognition.
13. How does Shah prove the reliability of vein patterns?
A. By making comparisons. B. By giving examples.
C. By defining concepts. D. By listing figures.
14. Why is it difficult for your vein to be extracted secretly?
A. Veins won’t change in a long period time. B. Veins are obtained under certain conditions.
C. Veins are more unique than facial features. D. Vein patterns are not shared on social media.
15. What did Shah really want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. The limited applications of vein patterns. B. The underlying principle of the technique.
C. The difficulty in obtaining vein patterns. D. The promising prospect of the technique.

Some people say that all of our good deeds come back to us in some way. Bill Magnusson hopes that, in the long run, his generosity will benefit not just himself, but the entire world.
Bill is a professional piano tuner from Colorado. Recently, he saw a news story about Jude Nyame Yie Kofie, an 11-year-old who shocked the world with his amazing piano-playing skills without ever taking a single lesson.
The newscast told the story of Jude’s father, who had dreams of becoming a musician himself, walking into the basement one day and finding his son playing a song perfectly on a long-forgotten electronic keyboard. He quickly realized that Jude was gifted. The child could play just about any song he heard, all without ever reading music or even learning which keys correspond with which notes.
The proud father shared a video of Jude playing the keyboard on the Internet. The video became a hit and earned Jude a lot of attention.
All of his success is especially impressive since Jude had a lot of health problems. He had heart disease as a boy, and lived with a feeding tube until he was eight. Today, he’s a healthy teenager who lives with autism.
As Jude’s musical career took off, the only thing he lacked was a proper piano. That was when Bill came. “My first reaction was, ‘This kid is Mozart level,’” Bill recalled of his first seeing Jude play. “And he deserves the very best.”
Bill reached out to the television station that aired Jude’s story with an incredible offer. He’d recently got an inheritance from his father, and could think of no better way to spend the money than to buy Jude a grand piano. The piano tuner even began to consider connecting Jude with a piano teacher who could help improve his skills.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

When the piano finally arrived, Jude’s eyes widened with a mix of disbelief and excitement.

Firstly, AI makes daily life much more convenient. Smart home devices like voice assistants can control lights and appliances, saving us time and effort. Secondly, in education, AI-powered learning apps provide personalized study plans and instant feedback, which greatly improve learning efficiency. These changes are just the beginning.
Therefore, I believe AI’s role in reshaping our lives will only grow stronger. We should embrace its benefits while being aware of hidden challenges.

When the piano finally arrived, Jude’s eyes widened with a mix of disbelief and excitement. He approached it cautiously, as if the fragile dream might fade away. He lifted the fallboard and stroked the keys gently. Taking a deep breath, he played a rich, resonant chord, whose melodious sound permeated the whole room. His father, witnessing Jude’s radiant smile, was overwhelmed with emotion. Standing by the door, Bill felt immense warmth in his heart, realizing the inheritance had finally found its destined owner.
