First impressions can be powerful. In less than a second, we can tell if they are honest and attractive. We may also decide what kind of people they are.
The appearance of people generally leads to certain common assumptions (假定). We also know that these assumptions can influence real-life behaviors. Physically attractive people generally get more good comments (评价) than less attractive people, Marine Rougier, a researcher in Belgium, said. In scientific circles, this is known as the “halo effect”, and it shows that people usually think that attractive people have better personality.
But in today’s digital age, first impressions are often formed online, where photos can be changed using digital tools like filters (滤镜). So, can we still trust our first impressions when images (图像) can be so easily changed?
In a recent study, Rougier and her colleague, Jan De Houwer, showed participants (参与者) photos of people with different levels of charm. Participants formed first impressions, but then were told that the photos might have been edited (修图) to make the people look more or less beautiful. Surprisingly, even after knowing this, participants still kept their first impressions. But in a following study, when participants were shown how easy it is to edit photos, they were much more likely to change their minds.
This “halo-update effect” shows that first impressions are malleable. For example, if someone seems confident and social at first because of their charm, people may think they’re less confident when they find out that the person’s photo was edited.
What does this mean for us? It suggests that we can challenge first impressions with new information. So, if you’ve ever worried about leaving a bad first impression, don’t be too nervous—people’s opinions can change. Just be careful with editing your photos too much, as it could let others form an overly positive opinion of your personal or professional image.
This research also tells us that looks aren’t everything, and people’s understanding of us can keep changing over time. Whether online or in person, the chance to change someone’s first impression is always there.
19.Which of the following is true about “halo effect”?
A.It means people with good looks usually get more good comments.
B.It shows physically attractive people have a perfect personality in real life.
C.It only happens in Belgium and has nothing to do with other countries.
D.It makes people think attractive people are good at all the skills.
20.What can you learn from the study in Paragraph 4?
A.Participants formed their first impressions by reading different types of comments.
B.Digital tools like filters played a key role in changing participants’ opinions.
C.First impressions were the same after participants knew the photos might be edited.
D.Knowing why the images were improved made many participants change minds.
21.What does the underlined word “malleable” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.wrong. B.important. C.meaningful. D.changeable.
22.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.How first impressions can be changed in the digital age.
B.Why we form different impressions on the same person.
C.The power of halo effect on leaving a good impression.
D.The importance of changing people’s first impressions.

Zac and I are best friends because we both love football. Zac was taller and stronger than me. But my speed gave me an advantage in games. When we were 15, we were proud to join the Springtown Stars which was the best under-17 team in our area. There was another team called the Springtown Asteroids. They trained just as hard as us, but didn’t play in important matches very often.
One day, the coach put up the new season’s team list. My finger was shaking as I looked for my name. Zac’s name was on the list, but mine wasn’t. I said to myself, “There must be a mistake!” I felt heartbroken and couldn’t believe I had been left out. Being on the Asteroids made me feel like I was falling behind.
After joining the Asteroids, I was really angry. I kicked the ball hard and didn’t care when my teammates passed the ball to me. Every time Zac waved at me, I just turned around. I was so upset.
Everything changed during a Saturday match. The Stars were playing against Riverside United. I hid behind the stands and watched. They worked together so well. Zac could stop those passes that I couldn’t. Then I remembered that while I was busy getting angry, Zac was practicing free kicks every Tuesday and Thursday.
When the game ended, I waited at the exit, I said to Zac, “Your winning kick in the second half was so cool!” and I put up my hand. He gave me a high-five, which made me feel warm inside. He said excitedly, “Coach said you’re getting much better now. If you keep training hard, we’ll be teammates again.”
That night, I made a new plan and stuck it on my wall: more practice, more time. I realized being on the Asteroids was not a punishment. It was a chance for me to grow. I’ve learned that getting angry won’t help you succeed. True success comes from continuous effort, not just wishful thinking or expecting things to fall into place without hard work.
23.Why did the writer feel heartbroken?
A.Because he wasn’t taller and stronger than Zac.
B.Because his name was not on the Stars’ list.
C.Because there was a mistake in the Stars’ list.
D.Because the Asteroids trained even harder.
24.Where did the writer watch the match between the Stars and Riverside United?
A.On the field with the players. B.In the locker room.
C.Behind the stands. D.At home on TV.
25.What did the writer decide to do after talking with Zac?
A.Stop playing football with Zac. B.Practice more and work harder.
C.Try to join another football team. D.Ask for a chance to join the Stars.
26.What does the story mainly want to tell us?
A.Teammates playing against each other can harm their friendship.
B.Natural talent is more important than practice in football.
C.Being on a less popular team results in fewer chances.
D.Success comes from hard work and continuous effort.
D
You must have heard of the legend (传说) of Yu Gong, who tried to move two mountains. The Taihang Mountain was one of the two mountains.
The Taihang Mountain passes through the areas of Hebei, Shanxi, Henan and Beijing. It is about 400 kilometers long. It is one of the largest mountain ranges in North China, and it was called “the backbone (脊梁) of China” in ancient times.

The Taihang Mountain is not only where the ancient stories happened, but also a place where tens of thousands of fossils (化石) were found. These fossils show how the earth has changed over time. At the same time, we can also learn about how ancient humans lived from the discoveries around the area.
Nowadays, there are natural forests around the area with beautiful colors in four seasons. In spring, the trees of Taihang Mountain will grow green leaves. In summer, the trees will grow luxuriant (茂密的) and leaves will cover the sun. In autumn, the trees in Taihang Mountain are tall and leaves turn yellow. In winter, the trees are covered with snow, like a thick white coat. You can go there whenever you want because it is beautiful all year round.
If you want to learn different things about history, culture and other important knowledge, you can come to the Taihang Mountain and feel its greatness.

Many legends about the beginning of human civilization (文明) come from the Taihang area. For example, Nuwa used stones to repair the sky to make sure that humans would have a better future; Houyi protected everyone by shooting the suns.

第二段指出:“Physically attractive people generally get more good comments than less attractive people”,并说明“In scientific circles, this is known as the ‘halo effect’”,因此A正确。
20.第四段明确说:“Surprisingly, even after knowing this, participants still kept their first impressions.”即参与者在知道照片可能被修过之后,第一印象仍然保持不变。A选项“通过阅读评论”错误;B选项“滤镜起了关键作用”与原文相反,滤镜并未改变他们;D选项“知道原因”不准确,原文是“shown how easy it is to edit photos”才改变了看法,而非知道“why”。
21.第五段提到:“This ‘halo-update effect’ shows that first impressions are malleable”,随后举例说明人们发现照片被修图后会改变看法,因此malleable意为“可改变的”,即changeable。

【答案】
Teachers always say that math is very important. And I couldn’t agree more. I like math because it’s like solving puzzles. Every problem is a challenge, and finding the solution gives me a great sense of achievement.
An unforgettable experience was in junior high. We had an extremely difficult math problem in class. At first, it seemed unsolvable. I spent hours trying different ways and finally solved it on my own. I was so excited!
To learn math better, I’ll do more exercises. Also, I’ll join a study group to discuss problems with others. This way, I can improve my math skills.
