“Are there any other risks?” “Take a look at this photo. Can you see this dark black cloud hanging over the surface of Earth? We don’t know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have to take further tests before sending our people there.”

When I was a boy of twelve, there was an old watchmaker who made watches in his house. Every day, you would see him making watches at his table in his front window. He made only a few watches every year because he made every piece himself. He was Mr. Steinmach and was not very friendly.
One day, some kids and I were playing baseball, and I hit a ball right through his front window where he worked. He came running from his house screaming that the watch he was working on was smashed (砸碎)! I was too scared to say that it was I who did it.
Months passed. Then one day, when I was walking by his house, the baseball I had hit through his window rolled by my feet. “There’s your ball back!” I heard him call. “Keep it away from my house! You boys are lucky. I was able to fix the watch.” I felt very sorry and walked up to him and said “Mr. Steinmach, it was me. I hit that ball through your window.” “Are you interested in paying for it?” he asked. I was shocked. I could never repay the price of his watches. “Not in money, but in work,” he said. I agreed.
From that day on, I volunteered at his shop. He taught me how to make watches. Within a couple of years, I was working for him after school. I was learning to be a watchmaker.
That was 60 years ago. Now, I’m the old watchmaker. When the young kids play baseball, I do get a little nervous. But I go out there and play with them. I always think of kind and wise Mr. Steinmach and the lessons he taught me. I really thank him.

Allison is a friend of mine who loves science. She loves to prove things using simple experiments (实验).
One day she said to me, “If you fill a glass with water and put a piece of paper on top, and then turn the glass over, what will happen?”
“You’ll get the floor wet.” I answered. “No. The water will stay in the glass,” she said. I told her to prove it.
Allison loved the challenge. She had a glass filled with water, and a four-by-six-inch sheet of paper. She placed the paper on top of the glass and pressed down hard on the paper. Next, she put one hand on the paper and turned the glass over.
I stood watching with a smile on my face. Surely all the water would spill (溢出) onto the floor. “Are you afraid to move your hand?” I asked with a smug (得意) look. She didn’t answer. Suddenly, she took her hand away. I quickly stepped back, thinking my feet would get wet when the water rushed out from the glass. But nothing happened! Not a drop of water spilled from the overturned glass.
Allison smiled. “See,” she said, “this little paper holds all the water back. Do you believe me now?” I should have known she would be right. “You can see that the paper holds the water back, but you can’t see why,” Allison continued. “It’s air pressure. It’s all around us, but we can’t see it. We can only see its effects. Air pressure on the paper holds it in place. It is stronger than the gravity (重力) that is trying to force the water out.”
As the expression goes, “Seeing is believing.” Now, I have to believe there is air pressure. It’s something we can’t see, but it’s there.
46. What things did Allison prepare before doing the experiment?
_______________________________________________
47. Why did the writer ask with a smug look?

48. What keeps the water in the glass in the experiment?

根据第一段中的“You write music, but you can’t…it.”以及第三段中的“The ringing in his ears was so loud that he could not hear the music…”
根据空后“began performing in front of people when he was just nine years old”可知,九岁就能登台演出,说明他是一个年少有为的音乐奇才。
根据本句中的“He met his idol, Mozart,…and this…him to become a great piano player and a writer of music.”
根据空后句“So many people liked his music.”

根据空后“and tried many treatments and instruments to help him hear”中提到的寻求治疗,可知他是去看各种大夫。
根据空后“they wanted to say, and he replied using a pen and paper”可知,朋友们写下的是他们想表达的“内容”,空处引导宾语从句并在从句中作“wanted to say”的宾语。故选用what。
根据空前“one of the musicians had to turn him around to see the audience cheering”与空后“he could not hear them”可知,乐手之所以帮他转过身去“看”欢呼,原因是他听不到声音,空后是原因。
根据前文极力描绘他听力完全丧失的背景,以及空前“The audience had heard…But he cried, as he heard…”

For the first time Venusian scientists managed to land a flying machine on the planet Earth, and it has sent back messages as well as photographs ever since. Venusian scientists have got valuable information to see if people from Venus could arrive safely on Earth.
“We have known, based on last week’s landing.” Prof. Zog said, “that there is no life on Earth.”
“How do you know this?” A science reporter asked.
“First, the ground on Earth is very hard and nothing can grow there. Second, the air is filled with carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) and other deadly gases. Nobody can breathe this air and survive.”
“Are there any other risks?” “Take a look at this photo. Can you see this dark black cloud hanging over the surface of Earth? We don’t know what it is made of, but it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have to take further tests before sending our people there.”
“Over here you will notice what seems to be a river, but it is polluted (污染) and the water is unfit to drink.”
“What are all those tiny black marks on the photographs?”
“We’re not sure. They seem to be metal (金属) objects that move along certain roads. They send gases, make noise and keep hitting into each other. There are so many of these roads and so many metal objects that it is impossible to land a flying plane without being hit.”
“If so, won’t this slow the progress of the flying plane program for several years?”
“Yes, but we will keep working as long as we get plenty of money.”
“Prof. Zog, why are we spending so much money to land a flying plane on Earth when there is no life there?”
“Because if we can learn to breathe in the Earth air, then we can live anywhere.”
21. Why did Venusian scientists send a flying machine to Earth?
A. To take photos for fun. B. To find excitement on Earth.
C. To search for clean water on Earth. D. To see if people could land on Earth.
22. What result did Professor Zog get about Earth?
A. The air on Earth is fresh enough.
B. They can drink the water from the river.
C. The Earth is fit for their people to live on.
D. They can’t send people to Earth right now.
23. According to the passage, what are the tiny black marks?
A. Running cars. B. Flying birds. C. Small stones. D. Dark leaves.
24. Why do Venusians still plan to land on Earth though there is no life?
A. They hope to get plenty of money.
B. They want to build houses on Earth.
C. They hope to train their survival skills.
D. They want to make friends with humans.
25. After reading this passage, what should we do in our daily life?
①make more cars ②plant more trees ③sort rubbish ④reuse bags
A. ①②③ B. ①③④ C. ②③④ D. ①②③④
D 22. D 23. A 24. C 25. C
根据第一段最后一句“…it has...to see if people from Venus could arrive safely on Earth.”
根据第五段“…it could give us a lot of trouble and we shall have to take further tests before sending our people there.” 第八段提到金属物体互相碰撞,导致“it is impossible to land a flying plane without being hit”不可能在不被撞击的情况下着陆。通过“further tests”需要进一步测试和“impossible to land”无法安全着陆的描述,可以推断出目前的结论是“暂时不能送人过去”,即“They can’t send people to Earth right now.”。
原文第七段“What are all those tiny black marks on the photographs?”以及下文“We’re not sure. They seem to be metal objects that move along certain roads.”
原文最后一段“Because if we can learn to breathe in the Earth air, then we can live anywhere.”
