We interviewed June Galloway about her new book *Get off on the Right Foot: Don’t Let the Wrong Gesture(手势) Ruin(破坏) Your Day*.
Host: English is an international language. But in your book, communication with gestures is paid more attention to. Why is that so important?
June: Well, gestures and other body language have different meanings in different places. What you consider friendly or polite could be thought to be impolite in another culture.
Host: Can greeting someone in the wrong way really lead to misunderstanding?
June: In some places, yes. The heavy handshake that a North American expects may seem quite impolite in other places. And a light handshake, which is usual in some countries—seems unfriendly to a North American.
Host: What other gestures can cause misunderstanding?
June: Take the gesture “Come here” for example. In North America, people gesture with the palm up. But in Southern Europe, that gesture means “goodbye”. And in many Asian countries, the palm-up gesture is thought to be rude. Instead, people there gesture with their palms down.
Host: There must be some gestures used everywhere, right? Like the thumb-up gesture for “great”?
June: Sorry. That’s very rude in Australia and the Middle East. That is why it’s important to know about body language and cultural differences. I’ve described many of these cultural differences in my book, so my readers won’t get off on the wrong foot.
( )1. Why did June Galloway emphasize(强调) the importance of proper gestures in communication?
A. Because English is not common enough in the world.
B. Because people can hardly know when to use body language.
C. Because there is a cultural difference in gestures or other body language.
D. Because greeting people with gestures or body language shows respect for them.
( )2. Which gesture means “goodbye” in Southern Europe?

①Some common gestures. ②The importance of body language.
③Different meanings of a gesture. ④The history of English language.

( )4. What does the underlined sentence “my readers won’t get off on the wrong foot” mean?
A. Her readers won’t get polite gestures. B. Her readers won’t know how to walk.
C. Her readers won’t understand others. D. Her readers won’t make mistakes in communication.
( )5. What’s the interview mainly about?
A. A popular gesture in the world. B. A new writer in the US.

Julie was born in China 17 years ago. In 2012, she went to the USA with her family. As a high school student, she has found many differences between Chinese and Americans:
**About money**
Americans like to spend more than they have, so many of them are always in debt (欠债). But Chinese usually spend less than they have, so many of them always have money left in the bank.
The American children themselves make their own money. Most Chinese kids always ask their parents for money.
**About education**
Many American students have less homework to do while many Chinese students have much.
Many American girls take part in sports, dancing and singing groups while many Chinese girls take part in study groups.
Many American parents think there is no need to send their children to an expensive school. It’s different in China. Many Chinese parents would do anything to send their children to expensive schools though their family isn’t rich enough.
**About friends**
Most American parents let their sons or daughters make friends by themselves. They never ask them about their friends while Chinese parents usually enjoy knowing more about their children’s friends in many ways, and usually stop them from staying out too late with friends.

Chinese humour in English is helping the world understand Chinese culture better. It’s used a lot, especially on social media(社交媒体). This shows that Chinglish, a mix of English and Chinese, is not always regarded(被认为) as wrong now like it used to be, but as a fun way to connect with others.
A popular example is a post(帖子) by a foreign blogger on a Chinese website. She talked about parting from her boyfriend. Many Chinese people left their ideas in English to comfort her, but their English wasn’t perfect. So some words of kindness turned into “You pretty, he not, u swan, he frog”. But others think it was fine because it was fast and convenient to write shorter words without changing the main meaning.
Chinglish even plays a part in the Oxford English Dictionary. Phrases like “add oil”, meaning *jia you* in Chinese and “cheer” in English, have already been in the dictionary. Similar examples also include “Long time no see”. Such an act shows that so many people have used the phrases or words that they can’t be neglected(忽视).
After the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, people started to accept Chinglish more. It’s now seen in things like video games, where Chinese words are kept instead of being translated. This can be seen from the latest hot game around the world with a rich Chinese culture—*Black Myth: Wukong*.
In it, the Chinese words like *yaoguai* are no longer translated into English words, but are kept as they are in Chinese. And foreign players just accept them and learn them happily as part of Chinese culture. Chinese people are also helping others understand their culture by explaining Chinglish words in games. This helps people around the world learn more about China.
But ___________________________________. A teacher said that Chinglish should not be used in situations like in class, at an important work meeting, or in a discussion. It may cause misunderstanding and make others think you’re impolite.
