Don’t worry – it’s completely normal to feel that way before visiting a new country.
I know first impressions are very important to you, and that’s why you care so much.
You said you’re worried about doing something silly. Trust me, Chinese families are very understanding with foreign guests.
I’m excited to hear that you’ll be staying with the Zhaos! Let me share some tips to help you feel more prepared.

Dear Tina,
Thanks for your email. I totally understand why you feel a little nervous – staying with a new family in a different culture is a big step. But please don’t worry! Let me answer your questions.
First of all, about gifts – yes, you should bring a small gift. Fruit, tea, or a local snack from America would be perfect. Just avoid clocks or white flowers.
Second, at the table, wait for the elders to start eating. And please don’t stick your chopsticks upright into rice – it’s very impolite. Saying “this is delicious” will make the host happy.
Third, for conversation, safe topics are food, travel, and hobbies. Avoid asking about age, salary, or politics. Learning to say “xiè xie” would be a nice touch!
Last but not least, try to arrive on time or a little early. Wear neat casual clothes – no flip-flops, please.
I hope the advice is helpful. Please feel free to ask if you want to know more.Wish you a safe trip, and I can’t wait to see you!
Cheers,
Yaming
