A clay cat, usually with big eyes and a wide-open mouth, may look a bit scary at first. But in Yunnan, they are little guards that protect homes. They are called wamao— traditional clay cats that keep bad luck away and bring peace. In 2023, wamao became Yunnan’s provincial intangible cultural heritage(省级非物质文化遗产).
Zhang Hang is an inheritor(传承人)of Kunming wamao-making skill. He makes these cute clay cats in a small Kunming museum— the Heart Chamber Wamao Museum.
Zhang first saw wamao in 2012 when he studied folk art at Yunnan Arts University. He loved its special artistic style very much. After that, looking for old wamao became part of his daily life. With over 10 years of effort, his museum now has more than 700 wamao. He said wamao carries history, culture and people’s hope for a better life.
Once in 2021, he visited an ancient village house and saw a wamao there. He tried to take it away but failed. When he came back years later, both the house and the clay cat were gone. He said, “Even if the house was broken, the wamao stayed with it. It comes from the earth, protects the house and finally goes back to the earth.”
Since opening the Heart Chamber Wamao Museum in 2019, he has promoted wamao through workshops and tours. By doing so, more and more people begin to know wamao. As for making a wamao, Zhang needs to mix clay, shape it, dry and fire it. But the true challenge is mixing tradition with new ideas. “It sometimes takes a month to create one that feels right,” he said. “The goal is to help this ancient craft find new meaning in modern society.”
24. What’s the right order of the events about Zhang Hang?
①He opened the Heart Chamber Wamao Museum.
②He first saw wamao when he studied at Yunnan Arts University.
③He visited an ancient village house and saw a wamao there.
④He fell in love with collecting wamao.
A. ②→④→①→③ B. ②→④→③→① C. ④→②→①→③
25. What can we infer from Zhang Hang’s words in Paragraph 4?
A. Wamao is made of earth and breaks easily.
B. Wamao is closely tied to people’s homes and nature.
C. Wamao can hardly be found in the ancient village house.
26. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “promoted” in Paragraph 5?
A. Received. B. Sold. C. Popularized.
27. How is Zhang Hang according to the text?
A. Calm and strict. B. Quiet and friendly. C. Patient and creative.

As a country strong in math, China has many folk games filled with math wisdom. You may have played many of them before. Let’s take a look at the following three intelligence (智力) games—Tangram, Nine Linked Rings (九连环) and Huarong Road.
First popular in the Ming and Qing dynasties, Tangram is a game made up of seven pieces of different shapes, including five triangles, a square and a parallelogram (平行四边形). Players need to use these seven pieces to create new shapes. To do it, they must know about plane geometry (平面几何). In the 18th century, the game spread to the West and soon became popular there.
Nine Linked Rings puzzle has a history of over 2, 000 years. It is made up of nine rings connected to a handle (手柄). Players need to move all the rings from the handle to win the game. This is not a simple game. For example, if you want to move the ninth ring, you have to move the third, fifth and seventh ones first, or you will not be able to do it.
Huarong Road puzzle is a block-moving game. It first appeared in the early 20th century. Each block is named after a character in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, like Cao Cao, Guan Yu and Zhao Yun. To win the game, players need to move the blocks to get Cao Cao out. It aims to test the players’ math knowledge, for example, geometric area.
28. How does the writer start the text?
A. By giving examples. B. By asking a question. C. By explaining reasons.
29. Which of the following shapes is made by Tangram?
A. B. C.
30. What do all these games in the text have in common?
A. They are about plane geometry. B. They are block-moving games. C. They are about math problems.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Folk Games from Ancient China
B. Three Chinese Classical Intelligence Games
C. China—A Powerful Nation in Mathematics

One day, when Lu Yao was looking at a satellite map, he noticed something unusual on the Gobi Desert—five huge Chinese characters reading “为人民服务” with deep, ugly circles around them. He felt heartbroken and curious. As a result, he drove over 2,000 kilometers from Chengdu to Hami to find out the truth.
After many difficulties and problems, Lu finally learned the sad truth: the round marks were actually deep tire tracks (轮胎痕迹) left by cars doing fast and risky driving. These marks had badly destroyed the old and meaningful landmark. Lu made up his mind to fix them on the desert.
To do this, Lu and his four friends searched all over Hami for small stones that matched the Gobi’s natural look. They worked really hard, buying 20 tons of small stones and using 27 small trucks to carry them to the site. Over a whole week, they filled every hole and covered all the tracks carefully, making sure the repair would not hurt the environment.
When the work was done, Lu wanted to check if the landmark looked nice again. He contacted (联系) a satellite company. On September 28, 2025, a satellite called “Jilin-1” took a clear photo of the place. The result was amazing—the “为人民服务” characters looked as clean and beautiful as before. Their effort finally paid off.
This story tells us that even common people can play a part in protecting our shared history and spirit. ________

Dear Jim,
I’m excited to tell you about “Exploring Chinese Characters” program in our school. It took place in our school hall last Saturday.
First, our Chinese teacher gave a talk about Chinese characters, and we learned lots of interesting stories behind everyday words. Next, we played the game of guessing word puzzles. It was really fun. Then, we made bookmarks with beautiful Chinese characters written on them. We also enjoyed a wonderful Chinese calligraphy show from our school’s handwriting club.
The program is very meaningful for me. It is a great chance for me to make more friends and learn from each other. Besides, it helps me learn and understand Chinese characters better.
I hope you can join in such activities next time.
