After exercising, the first thing that many of us want to do is to drink a glass of cold water quickly. It feels really wonderful to have the water travel down our throat smoothly. However, many people often tell us not to do this. Is drinking cold water really unhealthy? What can science tell us about it? Let’s find out the clear answers together.
A number of studies show that cold water slows down a person’s digestion (消化) . Most researchers believe that drinking cold water or cold drinks lowers our body’s core temperature and the temperature inside our body. It also makes our blood vessels (血管) become narrower. Therefore, our body has to burn lots of energy to bring its temperature back to normal, instead of using the energy to digest the food we just eat.
We can compare our digestive system to a hot pot for cooking. Pouring cold water into a hot pot is quite dangerous. Similarly, drinking cold water while eating is just like this. Though it is not that serious, it is not good for our body. That’s why many experts advise us not to drink water during meals. If you really want to drink, water at room temperature is a much better choice.
Besides, cold water brings us more physical troubles than we think. It makes headaches more serious. Many women often have headaches after drinking cold water. Drinking too much cold water also causes a sore throat and a runny nose easily.
For thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Medicine has told people not to have too many cold drinks. Modern studies also show that cold water is harmful to health. So we’d better stay away from cold water and ice cubes (冰块) in our daily life to keep healthy.
28. Which italic (斜体) word has the same meaning as the underlined word “lower” in Paragraph 2?
A. This street lamp is lower than the big tree in front of my house.
B. The lower part of the mountain is covered with beautiful flowers.
C. People should lower their voices when they are in the quiet library.
29. What is the purpose of comparing the digestive system to a hot pot?
A. To introduce the science behind experts’ advice.
B. To explain the harm of cold water during meals.
C. To show the danger of pouring cold water into a hot pot.
30. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. Other health problems caused by cold water.
B. The throat and nose problems caused by cold water.
C. The bad effect of cold water on women’s headaches.
31. Which of the following topics will the writer probably talk about next?
A. The reason why people prefer cold water.
B. The advantages of traditional Chinese medicine.
C. The right time and proper way to drink water in daily life.

Once upon a time, a sweet little bird lived deep in a quiet forest. She had shiny feathers and a kind heart, but she had a strange habit. Every day, she wrote down all her happy or painful experiences on small stones with her beak (喙). She believed every moment was worth keeping, thinking good memories kept her smiling while bad ones should be written down and let go. Then she put the stones into a cloth bag and carried it wherever she flew.
At first, she enjoyed collecting these memory stones very much. But as days passed, the bag grew heavier and heavier, making the bird unable to fly as fast and high as before. She didn’t notice the problem and just kept collecting more stones.
Weeks later, the bag was full and too heavy. When she tried to fly, her wings ached seriously and she had no energy left. The weight of the stones hurt her delicate (纤弱的) body badly.
We often hold on to all the past memories, but we can’t change what has happened. Live with a light heart and always move forward.

C. People should lower their voices when they are in the quiet library.
29. What is the purpose of comparing the digestive system to a hot pot?

A. Other health problems caused by cold water.
B. The throat and nose problems caused by cold water.
C. The bad effect of cold water on women’s headaches.
