B When I was in middle school, I was on a family vacation in Washington DC. I found there was a homeless man down the street. On our final day in the city, when my parents went for an evening walk, I went out of our hotel room and ran down the street to the homeless man. He looked at me, surely not expecting anything from a middle school girl. I asked him what he wanted to have for dinner. He replied “Bread and water”. I ran into the store and bought a big bag of bread and a bottle of water. I ran back with a smile on my face and handed the bag and the bottle to him. His smile has been in my mind ever since. I came back to the hotel room and when my parents returned, my dad told me he had a story for me. He asked if I remembered the homeless man down the street from our hotel and I shyly nodded. He then told me a story. As they were returning from their walk, they saw the homeless man was sharing a bag full of food with other homeless people around. They were all smiling and laughing as they ate. I smiled at my dad but I have never told him to this day the other half of the story. Till today, I still haven’t forgotten that man’s smile but I wish I had the courage to do this more often. One small kind action can begin a ripple effect (连锁反应) of kindness. So please, share a smile and do something kind for the people in need. 41. Why did the author go to Washington DC? A. To visit her parents. B. To go on a vacation. C. To do some shopping. D. A. homeless men usually live a happy life B. the author’s father was proud of her C. the author kept a secret to her parents D. the author was paid back by the homeless man 45. The story inspires the readers to _______ A. help those in need B. seek for their dreams C. value what they have D. face difficulties bravely C Modern technology has a strong influence on every part of our life, including the education in the universities. Ashok Goel, a professor of Georgia Institute of Technology, says he uses the Internet in almost all of the classes he teaches. Every term over 300 graduate students take his class on artificial intelligence (人工智能). The students never meet in person. All of the classes take place online — through a website, which lets students ask questions and complete their work from anywhere in the world. Having hundreds of students in a class means Ashok Goel has to answer thousands of questions. He has eight teaching assistants to help him. But even that is not enough to give all the students the help they need. So, in January, Goel had an idea. He decided to try an experiment. At the start of the spring 2016 term, he added a new member to his teaching team: Jill Watson. She was able to answer questions faster than most other teaching assistants. And she was available 24 hours a day. It was only at the end of the term that Goel’s students learned Watson’s true identity: she was not a real person like the other teaching assistants. Jill Watson was an AI computer program. And it seems Goel’s stories will become more common in the universities. A website called Campus Technology publishes stories about how colleges and universities use new technology. In August, the site published a survey of over 500 professors and their use of technology. Fifty-five percent of the professors asked students to use study materials online before coming to class. And, more than 70 percent combined (使相结合) online materials and face-to-face teaching in their classrooms. 46. What can we learn from Paragraph 2? A. Goel seldom uses the Internet in his class. B. The students take Goel’s class online. C. Goel occasionally meets his colleagues. D. Goel’s students dislike going to college. 47. Why does Goel have many teaching assistants to help him? A. He is not a clever professor. B. He wants to have a good sleep. C. He does not want to give answers. D. He has no time to answer all the questions. 48. What can we know about Jill Watson? A. She was a real person. B. She helped Goel with his work. C. She was one of Goel’s students. D. She could ask all the questions. 49. What does the underlined word “identity” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A. Who a person is. B. The name of a person. C. Where a person is from. D. A person’s contribution. 50. What is the passage mainly about? A. Ashok Goel has eight assistants to help him. B. New technology is changing our way of living. C. Modern technology greatly influences college education. D. Teachers will be completely replaced by the computers. D Gifted students in the Wichita Falls Independent School District in Texas had the opportunity to travel to STEM facilities and learn coding and other technical skills, but the transportation is not convenient. “We just started talking about, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we were able to design a mobile STEM lab? ’ ”says Dr. Peter E. Griffiths, the district’s associate superintendent. Educators soon realized that they could retrofit an old bus into a mobile STEM lab, which would provide increased access to career and technical education (CTE) experiences for students. Districts sold off buses when the vehicles became too old. Griffiths and his colleagues decided to retrofit one of those old vehicles. “Give me your ‘best worst’ bus,” Griffiths said to the transportation department. Soon the process of transforming began. Griffiths reached out to Reuben Rodriguez, the owner of a local car company, and explained what they wanted to do. Rodriguez agreed to work with the district on the price on condition that they could send CTE students to lend a hand with some of the building work. And bringing the bus from the dream stage to fruition has taken a lot of joint efforts of educators and the community. Called STEAM Machine, the bus looks like a device from a video game or a real-life Lego truck, and rides as a mobile maker space. “It has two touch screen TVs outside. It comes complete with drones and drone obstacle courses that will help students learn about coding in an enjoyable way,” Griffiths says. “Those are things that a lot of these kids have never experienced before.” To drive the bus, the district has hired a retiring teacher who will take the bus to various schools and engage in different lessons with students and educators. “We were so concerned about kids losing out on experiences before, and this is a solution. We aren’t going to let this go. The STEAM Machine will be equipped with all the necessary materials and resources, and it may change the way students learn and engage with their education,” Griffiths said. 51. What is the main purpose of the mobile STEM lab? A. To develop students’ interest in STEM research. B. To replace traditional school buses with electric ones. C. To provide fun activities for students during long trips D. To enable students to get more learning chances. 52. What was Rodriguez’s requirement for transforming the old bus? A. Educators needed to pay him in advance. B. Some students could help with the building work. C. The old bus should be equipped with high technology. D. The district must provide him with necessary materials. 53. What does Griffiths say about the STEAM Machine in Paragraph 3? A. It brings students fun learning experiences. B. It awakens students’ curiosity about bus driving. C. It protects students’ health with its special design. D. It saves students’ time by reducing traffic on the road. 54. What’s Griffiths’ attitude towards the future of the STEAM Machine? A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Hopeful. D. Unclear. 55. Which of the following best describes the features of the STEAM Machine? A. Safe and long-lasting. B. Fashionable and comfortable. C. Creative and educational. D. Cheap and eco-friendly. 第Ⅱ卷(共30分) 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) Normally, I loved birthdays. When my son and three daughters were little, my husband, Charles, and I always made sure to have dinner, followed by a big cake and presents. Later, when the kids grew up and lived in different states, they always called to wish me a happy birthday. But this year I could have skipped the whole day, knowing there was one call I wouldn’t be receiving, the one from my daughter Patty. She’d passed away unexpectedly just a month before. One thing which made me feel a little calm was a voice message that she’d left on my cell phone the night before she died, telling me she loved me. Over the following days I played her message of wishes over and over again, listening to the last words she said. “I love you very, very much, Mom.” Then, a couple of weeks before my birthday, while I was doing laundry (洗衣服), I accidentally dropped my phone in the washing machine. Quickly I pulled it out and dried it off, but when I checked my voicemail, Patty’s message was gone. I cried, heartbroken. Day after day I kept checking my voicemail, hoping Patty’s message would reappear. It never did. On the morning of my birthday, I received my son’s wishes. However, all I wanted for my birthday was to hear Patty’s voice again. “Happy birthday.” Charles said, “let’s go out for dinner and a movie. It might help take your mind off things.” Charles was right. I turned off my phone, settled into my seat in the movie theater and let the film take me away. But the minute it ended I started thinking about Patty again. As we were walking out of the theater, I turned on my phone. It rang, signaling I’d gotten a voice message. Probably just my youngest daughter, Leslie, calling to wish me a happy birthday, I thought. I dialed up voicemail and the message began. 【答案】46. B 47. D 48. B 49. A 50. It was Patty’s voice, clear as a bell, saying again, “I love you very, very much, Mom.” 56. How did the family celebrate the author’s birthday when the children were young?
