Have you ever bought something and then changed your mind? For Alison Jenson, 15, this used to happen several times a week. Alison was a shopaholic. She just couldn’t stop shopping and she loved special offers.
Alison’s bedroom is full of things. “I’ve been to every shop in London, I think”, says Alison. She picks up some earrings. The labels (标签) are still on them. “These were half price,” she says. “I’ve never worn them.” Alison’s problem wasn’t just jewelry. She also bought a lot of clothes, though not many shoes, because they were usually too expensive. She has also bought lots of other small things—like 20 new covers for her phone. She hasn’t used any of them.
According to experts, we all feel excited after we buy something new. For shopaholics, it’s a little different. Soon after they buy something, they think they’ve made a mistake and start to feel unhappy. So they buy themselves something else to feel happier.
Psychologists (心理学家) first described the problems of shopaholics in 1955. However, there was very little research on the subject until recently. Now, doctors think thousands of people suffer from the problem, and the situation is getting worse. There are also more teenage shopaholics now, although most young people don’t have enough money to go shopping very regularly.
Alison knew she had a problem. “I often bought something every day. Usually it was something small, but I just needed to buy it,” she says. “I spent money that I got for my birthday, and when I was short of money, I borrowed it from friends or my parents. When I couldn’t go shopping, I felt anxious. Then one day, my parents just looked at all the things in my room and said that this was crazy! I knew they were right. I needed some big changes in my life.”
Alison now gets help with her problem and feels she has changed. She no longer thinks she is a shopaholic. “When I want to buy something in a shop, I ask myself two questions,” she says. “Do I need it? Can I afford it? The answer to both questions is usually ‘no’, so I walk away. It’s great!”
43. What does the underlined word “shopaholic” mean in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. a person who always changes his or her mind.
B. a person who is crazy about shopping.
C. a person who buys things every day.
D. a person who is afraid of shopping.
44. What do we know about Alison Jenson according to the passage?
A. She is an adult.
B. She has been to every shop in England.
C. She bought many shoes.
D. She bought many things that she didn’t really need.
45. What do experts say about shopaholics?
A. Shopaholics feel sad when they are shopping.
B. Shopaholics soon feel unhappy after they have bought something.
C. Shopaholics feel more excited than other people when they shop.
D. Shopping is the only way shopaholics can feel happy.
46. Which word can best describe Alison’s feeling at the end of the passage?
A. Glad. B. Worried. C. Embarrassed. D. Sad.
47. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Shop Till You Drop! B. Shopping Makes Me Happy!
C. You’d Better Shop Less! D. I Can Stop Shopping Now!
D
Big Data and You
Big data(数据) is a lot of sets of information that are put together so they can be used by a computer program. The computer program looks for different kinds of answers or patterns(模式) in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources, such as information that comes from schools, social media(媒体)sites, companies, and governments. One set of data can have people’s names and addresses. Another set can have what they like, where they go, and how much time they spend on the computer.
Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need extra(额外的)help in class. The teachers can then give certain students more help or support so those students can succeed in school. Companies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.
Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict(预测)if a baby who was born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he or she does not get sick. Big data can also be used for bad reasons. It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong.
How can big data be used for good and bad things? It is because the computer programs used to look at big data and understand it are written by people. People think in a certain way. Because they think a certain way, they build a model of those ideas. These ideas are then used to look at the data. Sometimes, these ideas are helpful for people or businesses. Other times, bad ideas can cause problems for certain groups of people.
48. What does the underlined word “sources” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Schools that you come from. B. Places that you get things from.
C. Answers that you try to look for. D. Companies that you care about.
49. How can schools help students with big data according to Paragraph 2?
A. By recording how they get to school. B. By checking if they were born early.
C. By finding out who needs extra help. D. By asking what ice cream they buy.
50. Which of the following is TRUE about big data according to the passage?
A. It may bring some problems. B. The government can control it very well.
C. It is used by hospitals the most. D. People should send photos online to improve it.
51. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
52. What is the writer’s purpose according to the passage?
A. To call for good use of big data. B. To teach us how to collect information.
C. To ask people to be careful of big data. D. To show what big data is and how it works.

【答案】例文
As a teenager, I get angry with my parents when they make me feel stressed. For example, last term they often asked me to do many exercises and take online English lessons at home on weekends, which made me angry.
However, I didn’t think it was right to get angry with parents. I thought solving the problem was the key, so I communicated with them. I told them that I would be strict with myself in each subject in order to get better grades. I also told them I wanted to spend some time each week on my hobby—playing basketball, because I wanted to keep a balance between my study and rest. From then on, I did well in every subject. What’s more, they were happy when I was chosen as a member of our school basketball team.
