Chinese AI Model DeepSeek-R1 Stun (震惊) the World
January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write codes (编写代码) and answer questions like top models such as Open AI’s GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of Open AI’s cost) and used 2, 048computer chips (电脑芯片) for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice math. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8%right, slightly higher than Open AI’s model. A simple version (版本) of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19, 000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments (实验) with it cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.” U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
38. What is the main purpose of the article?
A. To compare Chinese and American AI technologies.
B. To encourage students to become programmers.
C. To explain how computer chips work.
D. To introduce a low-cost AI model from China.
39. What does “improves by itself” mean in the article?
A. It needs programmers to fix mistakes. B. It becomes better through practice.
C. It copies answers from other AIs. D. It only works with expensive tools.
40. Why did Meta plan to spend more money on AI research?
A. To help Chinese companies. B. To build more computer chips.
C. Because they were worried about DeepSeek-R1. D. To hire German scientists.
41. What does the word “it” refer to?
A. DeepSeek-R1 B. Meta. C. A computer chip. D. A math test.
42. Why does the engineer say, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use”?
A. To criticize expensive AI models. B. To explain why R1 is free.
C. To compare R1 with Meta’s AI. D. To encourage students to study math.

①When Adele published her single Someone Like You, this moving song was popular with millions of people. The slow and emotional beats of the song help deal with the pain of heartbreak and loss.
②There is no doubt that music can calm you down, and it turns out that it can also be a medicine for treating physical pain. According to a new study, listening to favorite songs can reduce people’s feelings of pain, and the sad songs are the most useful.
③Researchers invited 63 adults to bring two songs. One was their favorite, and the other was the song they would bring with them on a desert island. Then the researchers also had the adults pick one of the seven songs that the team considered relaxing and were unfamiliar to the adults.
④In one group, each person was asked to look at a screen while listening to their favorite songs, one relaxing song or a mixture of their two songs and the relaxing chosen song. The other group had people sitting in silence. All the while, the researchers put a hot object—similar to the pain of a boiling hot teacup on the skin—on the participants’ (参与者的) left arms.
⑤When rating (评价) their experiences, people were more likely to report feeling less pain when listening to their favorite songs compared with listening to the unfamiliar relaxing song or silence. The mixture did not reduce pain, which might mean music was more than a distraction (分散注意力的事) from an unpleasant experience. After interviewing the participants about the songs they brought and their rating of pain, the researchers found that people who listened to sad songs felt less pain than those who listened to cheerful songs.
⑥Still, there is nothing wrong with picking a cheerful song if that is your favorite. After all, music provides many other health benefits (益处), including stress reduction and a good night’s sleep.
43. How does the writer lead into the topic?
A. By telling a story. B. By comparing differences.
C. By giving an example. D. By raising questions.
44. What kind of music can reduce the feeling of pain best according to the study?
A. Loud music. B. Sad music. C. Cheerful music. D. Exciting music.
45. What can we know about the study? Check and choose the right answer.
①Participants listened to two favorite songs.
②A hot object was placed on the participants’ arms.
③Participants brought only one of their favorite songs.
④More than seventy participants took part in the study.
⑤Participants shared their ratings of pain with researchers.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ②③⑤ D. ③④⑤
46. Which paragraph shows the result of the study?
A. Paragraph 6. B. Paragraph 3. C. Paragraph 4. D. Paragraph 5.
47. What is the best title for this passage?
A. Sad Songs, Less Pain B. Quiet Music, Lower Pressure
C. Old Research, New Discoveries D. Different Songs, Different Feelings

A new type of travel has become popular in China, known as “special forces-style tourism (特种兵式旅行)”. This style of travel means visiting many places of interest in a short period, typically over weekends. College students are the main travelers in this type of tourism.
One such student is Yu Yinghua. She started taking part in this rapid travel in March. After spending nearly three years at school, Yu expressed her desire to explore during her free time. During her recent trip to Shanghai, Yu had a busy day, beginning at 7 a.m. and visiting a lot of spots (地点). Her trip began at Jing’an Temple at 7:30 a.m. She then went to visit a famous brunch shop and a fashionable store on Anfu Road. Following that, she explored the past homes of Song Qingling and Bajin. Yu enjoyed her lunch and took a short rest at a shopping mall. In the afternoon, she enjoyed the beautiful scenery while walking on the Garden Bridge of Shanghai. Before returning to school at 7:00 p.m., she watched a Hanfu show at Yu Garden and enjoyed some snacks.
Similarly, another student named Chen Junjun also enjoys this type of travel. However, Chen prefers long-distance trips to reduce pressure of her studies. In April, she had a two-day trip to Xi’an, Shaanxi, where she explored all the main tourist attractions Chen mentioned that managing her studies could be demanding, so these trips served as a way to bring joy into her busy life.
However, experts warn that not everyone may find this type of tourism suitable. It can be physically tiring to visit so many places in a short period. Unlike calm holidays where arrangements (安排) can be changed as wanted, “special forces-style tourism” requires both stamina (耐力)and a relaxed manner.

A. To show the advantages of “special forces-style tourism”.

根据“Lisa is happy to go to the English singing contest and she has worked so hard for this”可知她为这次参加比赛的机会付出了巨大的努力。故选C。
【答案】A
an easier一个更容易的;a stronger一个更强壮的;the easiest最容易的;the strongest最强壮的。根据“I find it harder to keep a resolution than to make one.” 故选A。
【答案】A
根据“which is convenient for everyone.” 故选A。

if如果;after在…… 根据“I believe you’ll surely make your dream come true...you give it up halfway.”
根据“After winning money in the card game, John decided to try again.”
