Selina Zhang,a high schooler, has invented a trap that could possibly remove lanternflies
(灯笼蝇)in the city.She first noticed this pest(害虫)in grade school.At the time,Zhang
was visiting a market near her hometown. The colorful bugs caught her eye,and she was
curious and interested as she had never seen a bug quite like it.
Unit 5 MUSIC
Zhang's first experience with the spotted lanternfly relates to the quote,"Not all that
glitters is gold."This bug with bright red underwings standing out from black forewings
might be pretty to look at.However,it has damaged local agricultural industry for decades,
and the city has been unable to remove this problem.
This insect likes to eat most plants and can feed on most crops, trees and various fruits.
This invasive pest does not harm humans or animals. However,it could reduce the quality of
life of people living in heavily affected areas..It is known to be a nuisance(讨厌的东西)in
outdoor areas as they can lay their egg masses on trees and even vehicles.
Zhang eventually realized that this insect was a threat to Garden City and decided to do
something about it.Most people choose insecticides (to deal with this problem, but
this can leave harmful remains affecting crucial pollinators. Some others use a sticky band
wrapped around a tree trunk to trap pests. This method is also unsafe as it can trap other small
animals and insects in its grip.
In search of an ecologically acceptable method,Zhang got inspiration from chess boards
and the "DanceDance Revolution".She conducted an extensive field observation for weeks
on end, observing the behavioral patterns of the bugs. She studied how they grew over time
and navigated unfamiliar structures and areas they chose to gather. After her study,Zhang
knew she wanted to copy the tree of heaven as a trap and used an umbrella from her family's
patio.
She then designed an electric net for this tree, using machine learning to kill the
lanternflies that landed.And she finally created a solar-powered,self-cleaning "tree"that
attracts the spotted lanternfly, removing the bug with an electronic net.

We all love our parents and turn to them when we're in need, but would you like them to
hear the conversations you have with your fiends in the school playground or lunch queue?
Social networking sites have become virtual extensions of the school hallways,so would you
add your parents as "friends"and allow them to view your online activities and conversations
with friends?
In the past, the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date
with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day
lives as they always had because they had no need to be tech-experienced.However,more
and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives
This realization has given many parents the motivation (to educate themselves about
social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose
who they have around them;there's also a certain amount of control over privacy that we
don't get in real life.Sometimes we feel that privacy is disturbed when we must accept a
"friend"request from a parent or family member.
It's a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives.
On the one hand we don't want to "reject"their request because that might hurt their feelings
or make them feel you have something to hide.On the other hand if you do accept, then you
could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the
way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn't take it personally if their child ignores
their request:"When a teen ignores a parent's fiiend request,it doesn't necessarily mean that
they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want
to practice their independence".

To nap (or not to nap?Whether napping will work for you depends on a range of
factors,such as lifestyle,sleep cycle length,culture,and,most importantly,the length of your
nap.If you like to nap,you are not alone.Napping is part of the culture in many countries:
around 51 percent of people worldwide habitually enjoy a nap in the daytime.
When it comes to napping, one size definitely doesn't fit all.If you don't have enough
sleep at night,a nap can be helpful or even essential for making it through the day. However,
for those with other sleep issues,a nap may make it harder to fall asleep at night. For most of
us,the timing and length of our nap will largely determine how beneficial it is to our sleep
routine.
Unit 5 MUSIC
Between 1 p.m.and 4 p.m.,most people experience an increase in sleepiness,caused by a
slight drop in core body temperature.A nap of 30 minutes or less around this time allows you
to benefit from a burst of sleepiness, which is good for mental and physical alertness ()
Napping for 30 minutes or less can reduce stress and lower the risk of cardiovascular
problems like heart attacks and strokes. One study showed that napping three times a week for
30 minutes led to a 37 percent decreased risk of dying from heart disease.
A brief nap can be beneficial to those with serious daytime sleepiness.Studies show that
short naps can help improve or reset a sleeping disorder.Naps can help insomnia (
treatment, which involves limiting daytime sleep to increase the chance of sound sleep at
night.
Be careful about naps of more than 30 minutes.Waking from the deep-sleep stages results
in sleep inertia,a super-dizzy (state where brainwaves are slow and it takes longer to
adapt to the awake state.A recent study has found that napping for more than 60 minutes a
day increased the risk of type2 diabetes(搪尿病)by50 percent..
