“The mountains are calling and I must go” - the famous quote is from John Muir (1838-1914), who is described as “the wilderness poet” and “the citizen of the universe.” He once jokingly referred to himself as a “poet-geologist-botanist and ornithologist (鸟类学家) -naturalist etc. etc.!” He is known as the Father of American National Parks.
Famed documentary filmmaker Ken Burns recently said, “As we got to know him… he was among the highest individuals in America; I’m talking about the level of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and Thomas Jefferson — people who have had a transformational effect on who we are.”
So where is the quote from? Well, John Muir was a productive writer. Whether he was writing poetry or simply letters to his family, John Muir was always putting pen to paper. The quote is from within one of his many letters written to his sister:
September 3rd, 1873
Yosemite Valley
Dear sister Sarah,
I have just returned from the longest and hardest trip I have ever made in the mountains, having been gone over five weeks. I am weary, but resting fast; sleepy, but sleeping deep and fast; hungry, but eating much. For two weeks I explored the glaciers of the summits east of here, sleeping among the snowy mountains without blankets and with little to eat on account of its being so inaccessible. After my icy experiences, it seems strange to be down here in so warm and flowery a climate.
I will soon be off again, determined to use all the season in carrying through my work - will go next to Kings River a hundred miles south, then to Lake Tahoe and surrounding mountains, and in winter work in Oakland with my pen.
Though slow, someday I will have the results of my mountain studies in a form in which you all will be able to read and judge them. The mountains are calling and I must go, and I will work on while I can, studying incessantly (永不停息地).
I will write again when I return from Kings River Canyon.
Farewell, with love everlasting.
Yours,
John

In recent years, mooncakes with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) ingredients have become increasingly popular. It shows that modern consumers are paying more attention to safer and healthier food in daily life.
TCM believes that many Chinese herbs can serve as both food and medicine. They are helpful in preventing diseases, which is called “medicine food homology”. It is the key theory of food therapy. So far, 106 kinds of common Chinese herbs have been allowed to be used in food by official organizations.
To meet people’s health needs, traditional mooncakes are changing — producers cut down sugar and oil in their products. Many famous TCM brands and hospitals have launched TCM mooncakes. For example, Tong Ren Tang, a well-known ancient TCM brand, has created mooncakes with ingredients like danggui, dangshen and shihu. These mooncakes are made in five colors, following the TCM idea that “five colors nourish five organs”.
Han Lu, a researcher from Tong Ren Tang, said, “Consumers prefer natural food with less sugar, less oil and no additives. Besides, TCM culture has won greater popularity among young people in recent years.” Experts will carefully choose TCM ingredients to avoid bad medicine reactions. Fruits like grapes and coconuts are also added to make the mooncakes taste better. A local consumer in Chengdu shared her experience. She chose mooncakes with chenpi and Chinese yam on purpose, because they are good for her weak stomach. She also said such mooncakes have no strong medicine smell and taste special.
However, some experts point out that they still remain high in oil and sugar and are often consumed more as a snack than for their health benefits. Ma Xiaoju, director of the department of nutrition at the School of Public Health at the Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, warned that foods produced with TCM may contain only small amounts of herbs, which may not have significant health benefits. Additionally, due to their high sugar and fat content, mooncakes are not recommended for people with high blood sugar levels.
In general, TCM-themed food and drinks are popular across China now. For most people, they are not used to treat illness, but simply help them keep a healthier lifestyle.
8. Why do TCM mooncakes become popular recently?
A. They are much cheaper than common mooncakes.
B. People’s health awareness is rising.
C. They can cure all kinds of diseases.
D. All hospitals begin to produce them.
9. What does the underlined phrase “medicine food homology” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Some herbs can be food as well as medicine.
B. Medicine should be made with common food.
C. People must eat medicine with daily food.
D. Traditional food is better than modern medicine.
10. What can we learn about TCM mooncakes from the passage?
A. They have a strong terrible medicine smell.
B. They are totally healthy with no sugar.
C. Experts choose TCM ingredients safely for mooncakes.
D. High blood sugar patients can enjoy TCM mooncakes freely.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards TCM mooncakes?
A. Uninterested. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Worried.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. C

D
People are more likely to cheat when they delegate (委托) a task to artificial intelligence instead of doing it themselves, suggests a new study.
To explore whether and under what circumstances AI supports dishonest behavior, researchers conducted an experiment in which participants were shown 10 die rolls (骰子) on a computer screen and told to report the numbers. The higher the numbers rolled, the more money they would earn. They were then randomly assigned to either report the die-roll numbers themselves or instruct AI to do it for them. The researchers found that when participants self-reported the numbers, they were honest about 95% of the time. But when participants instructed AI to report the numbers, they were more likely to cheat by a way that would help them maximize their profits. In one group, for example, participants had the option of instructing AI to “maximize accuracy” (report the numbers as accurately as possible), “maximize profit” (an open invitation to cheat) or do something in between. Only 12% of the participants in this group chose to tell the AI to maximize accuracy while 29% maximize profit.
The rest set a goal for AI that was somewhere in between maximize accuracy and maximize profit. “We were interested to not just see if people cheat, but how much,” says Nils Kobis, a researcher at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany and one of the study’s authors.
Psychological research suggests that when people cheat they often don’t do it to the fullest extent possible, he says, which could explain why 59% of participants in the previous experiment instruct the AI to do something in between maximizing accuracy and maximizing profit.
Why does AI make cheating easier overall? Previous research suggests people may justify dishonest behavior by shifting responsibility to others — in this case, an AI, the researchers said. For the researchers, the takeaway is that AI makes it easier to dodge (逃避) taking responsibility for moral errors, a problem they believe is likely to become more common. Their research suggests giving people an option to do the task themselves, rather than delegate it to AI, may help them be more honest. “That is definitely a silver lining”, says Köbis.
12. What is the purpose of the experiment?
A. To test die rolls on computers.
B. To study AI’s effect on dishonest behavior.
C. To improve AI’s working accuracy.
D. To compare profits of different groups.
13. How many participants chose a middle choice for AI?
A. 12%. B. 29%. C. 59%. D. 88%.
14. What is the main reason for easier cheating with AI?
A. AI forces people to cheat.
B. People can escape moral responsibility.
C. AI often provides wrong results.
D. People know nothing about AI rules.
15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. AI will no longer be used in future work.
B. Avoiding AI delegation can cut down cheating.
C. Cheating problems will disappear soon.
D. People are willing to take all moral duties.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. B
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了一项关于人工智能对不诚实行为影响的心理学研究。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段的句子“To explore whether and under what circumstances AI supports dishonest behavior, researchers conducted an experiment. (为了探索AI是否以及在何种情况下支持不诚实行为,研究人员进行了一项实验)”可知,实验的目的是研究AI对不诚实行为的影响。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的句子“Only 12% of the participants in this group chose to tell the AI to maximize accuracy while 29% maximize profit. 【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段的句子“Previous research suggests people may justify dishonest behavior by shifting responsibility to others — in this case, an AI. (先前研究表明,人们可能通过将责任转移给他人——在这种情况下是AI——来为不诚实行为辩解)”以及“AI makes it easier to dodge taking responsibility for moral errors"("AI使人们更容易逃避对道德错误承担责任)”可知,使用AI更容易作弊的主要原因是人们可以逃避道德责任。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的句子“Their research suggests giving people an option to do the task themselves, rather than delegate it to AI, may help them be more honest. ‘That is definitely a silver lining,’ says Köbis. (他们的研究表明,给人们一个自己完成任务而非委托给AI的选择,可能有助于他们更诚实。‘这肯定是一个积极的一面,’Köbis说)”可知,避免将任务委托给AI可以减少作弊。

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital (音乐演奏会) was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing thing into something worthwhile. “You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living,” my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the seniors there who do not have families to visit them that often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs.”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only could I play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming including many old classics.
When the exciting day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. Feeling as if the whole world was watching me, I was struck dead with embarrassment. How could I perform the song without the piano? I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way to the front of the crowd of dinners and announced in a comforting tone, “This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous.” Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything ready, I took a deep breath and commenced my performance.
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old. One woman got up and began to animatedly dance in the room. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped theirs toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd. I realized that it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I’ m proud that I have the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.
