It was a beautiful day with a clear, blue sky and the cool wind made my morning tea cool. Everything was quiet and the book in my hands was lovely until I felt my chair moving. At that moment, I thought to myself, “It is an earthquake”. I was scared as I ran to tell my parents. But when I reached them, the earthquake stopped.
Nothing happened in the next few hours. My family and I were not in danger and our house was still standing. We watched the news about the earthquake. The epicenter (震中) was very close to Muzaffarabad. We felt lucky to be in the city of Kashmir. After we knew the situation in Muzaffarabad, I decided to volunteer to help those people right away.
I arrived in the city of Muzaffarabad with a few other volunteers. We tried to help out the people there. After hours of digging, we found a few survivors (幸存者). We quickly sent for doctors to make sure they were all right. When they met their families, they cried for joy. That made me very happy. However, not everyone had a happy ending. What can we do with all these old toys? Instead of throwing them away, she chose to wash, repair and give them to young patients at the University Hospital of Caracas. Months later, encouraged by the warm feedback, she turned her home into the Hospital for Soft Toys, a nonprofit foundation.
Today, about 60 volunteers meet there at least once a week to repair worn-out toys. They carefully sew rips, brush off dust or add new stuffing. Over the past seven years, about 70,000 toys have got a new life!
Repairing a soft toy for another round of love is also helpful to the volunteers. “All of us who come here get a special kind of comfort,” says 72-year-old Silvia Helper, who has volunteered for nearly three years. “It’s like a therapy where we care for each other.”
The restored toys are not only sent to hospitals and schools in poor areas, but also to older people’s homes—anyone who needs a little bit of love. Each toy comes with a sweet note: “Hello! I am a doll with lots of happy memories. Take care of me, and I’ll bring you the same! When you grow up, pass me on to another child who will love me!”

【原文】 Good morning, everyone. Welcome to today’s Around the World. I’m going to talk about how to behave at a dinner party. When you go to a dinner party in the USA, you’d better bring a small present. It’s nice to bring drinks, flowers, chocolate or something like that. You are expected to arrive on time or no more than five minutes late. Try to be relaxed and polite at table. Usually the party starts with drinks and snacks. If you want to be very polite, say how much you enjoy them. If you don’t know how to use the knife and fork, don’t be nervous. You can watch others and follow them. Remember to show your thanks after dinner. That’s all. Thanks for listening.

76.One possible version:
Dear Mike,
How’s it going? I’m glad that you’re interested in Chinese table manners. Now let me tell you something about them.
In China, it’s important to wait for everyone to arrive before starting to eat. And while eating, you should not eat too much at a time. Also, you’d better not talk with food in your mouth. It’s not polite. Try not to make noises while drinking your soup. What’s more, you must pay attention to the use of chopsticks. Don’t stick them into your food or point at others with them. When you finish eating, place them on your bowl. Moreover, eat up all the food in your bowl if possible.
Please tell me something about British table manners in your next email. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,
Lin Tao
