Culture is not only for human beings. It is also very important for wild animals. Animals use tools, live in groups and have their own culture.
Sam Williams works for the Macaw Recovery Network in Costa Rica. He helps to increase the number of macaws (金刚鹦鹉) by taking birds that were born in cages (笼子) and sending them back into the wild.
“In a cage, you can’t train them to know where, when and how to find that food, or about trees with a good home,” Williams told the ecologist (生态学者) and writer Carl Safina. In the wild, the birds’ parents are the ones that teach them this important information.
This type of knowledge is called cultural knowledge. Cultural knowledge can be passed down from the older generation to the newer one. For many animals, cultural knowledge is necessary for life.
Culture helps animals get used to different living environments. For example, some crows have learned to put nuts in the middle of the road for cars to drive over. And in other places, they have learned to do this at crossroads, so they can get food safely when the cars stop at red lights.
Other important parts of cultural knowledge include things like group identity (认同), using different tools, having different moving habits and communicating in their own ways.
These traditions can especially be seen in chimpanzee (黑猩猩) communities. Cat Hobaiter, who studies chimpanzees, said, “It’s not just the loss of populations of chimps that worries me. I find it worrying that we may lose each population’s unique culture.”
23.What does Sam Williams do?
A.He catches wild macaws and puts them in the cages.
B.He helps to raise macaws and sends them back to nature.
C.He studies chimpanzees and can communicate with them.
24.Which one is cultural knowledge?
A.Parents teach their children how to find food.
B.Children can find a good place to build nests.
C.Smaller animal populations worry some people.
25.How does the writer develop paragraph 5?
A.By listing numbers. B.By giving examples. C.By asking questions.
26.Which part of a magazine may the passage be taken from?
A.Art. B.Nature. C.Culture.

Did you know students in ancient China had special breaks? During the Tang Dynasty, students would go home to help with farming in spring and autumn, which were called “field holidays”. Now, a similar idea is coming back across the country.
At the 2026 Two Sessions (两会), the topic of “spring and autumn breaks” for primary and secondary (中等的) school students became hot. The Government Work Report clearly stated that China will support certain areas to try them out. Students in Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Sichuan have already enjoyed their first autumn break in 2025.
The reasons behind this move are clear. After long periods of study, students need time to rest. The nice weather in spring and autumn makes it the perfect time for outdoor activities. These breaks allow students to step out of classrooms, connect with nature, and take part in practical learning. They also give families a chance to travel when it’s not crowded, helping with economic (经济的) development.
“Now, the policy (政策) has reached Chongqing. On March 12, 2026, the city officially (官方地) introduced the holiday. Every school year will have two short breaks, each lasting 2 to 3 days. To ensure students truly relax, the government set four strict rules: no written homework, no exams right after the holiday, no extra lessons, and no after-school training classes.
However, many working parents worry that they don’t have time to look after their children during the holidays because of busy work. To solve this problem, schools offer free school care services, and local communities provide activities for students. What’s more, parents may enjoy more paid leave, so they can spend time with their children during the breaks.
As a local education official said, “Spring and autumn breaks are not just about taking more days off. They are a chance for students to grow in a healthier and more meaningful way.”
27.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Certain areas in China.
B.Primary and secondary schools.
C.Spring and autumn breaks.
28.What is the main reason for the government to support spring and autumn breaks?
A.To develop the economy.
B.To help students have more classes.
C.To help students rest more.
29.What can we learn about the spring and autumn holidays from Paragraphs 4 and 5?
A.Parents think there are some challenges.
B.Students should do written homework.
C.Students can pay to get the school care.
30.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Spring and Autumn Breaks: A New Holiday
B.Spring and Autumn Breaks: Chongqing’s Move
C.The Return of Ancient Breaks: A Worldwide Practice
Every year, a lot of food is wasted, and kitchens are one of the biggest causes. 31 This idea can go back to the 1980s in the United States, but it was Johnson’s 2013 book, Zero Waste Home, that made it widely known.
32 Food waste is more than throwing away perfectly good food. It also includes wasting the water and energy used to grow or make food. Cutting down on kitchen waste saves money and makes better use of natural resources.
Many experts believe that small changes can help people practise a zero-waste lifestyle. Here are some simple ways to start.
Plan before you shop. Chef Massimo says, “Cooking is an act of love, but it requires planning to avoid waste.” 33 Then you will buy only what you need, so as to cut down on food waste.
Store food properly. Proper storage can make food last longer and keep its good value for health. 34 Make good use of leftovers. Instead of throwing them away, you can use uneaten food to create new meals. For example, uneaten vegetables can be used to make soup and overripe fruit can be used for juice.
All in all, the Zero-Waste Kitchen is a simple and practical way to protect our planet. 35 Next time you cook, can you find one way to waste less?
A.Why is the Zero-Waste Kitchen important?
B.You can make a shopping list according to the planned meals.
C.By making these small changes, we can help make the future greener.
D.The Zero-Waste Kitchen aims to change this by helping people manage food with less waste.
E.For example, knowing how to keep different kinds of food can help stop food from going bad.

A long time ago, there was a clever man in ancient China named Cang Jie. He was in charge of (负责) recording important events.
46 that time, there were no words, no pens, and no paper. People could only record information by piling up stones. However, as their activities became more complex (复杂的), the stones turned into a big mess. Later, clever people invented a new way 47 (record) events; tying knots in ropes. The knots had different sizes, and each size represented a different thing. At first, this worked well. 48 soon, there were too many things, and the knots became confusing.
To solve the problem, Cang Jie came up with a new idea. He started adding shells (贝壳) and little stones to the knots to make the records 49 (clear). At first, this new method worked well. But one day, the Yellow Emperor had 50 important meeting with another chief named Chi You. Cang Jie used his “shell-and-knot method” to record the time and place; however, he made a mistake. He 51 (think), “This method isn’t good enough.”
One winter day, Cang Jie saw a hunter on the road looking for wild bear tracks. The hunter explained, “Each animal has different footprints. A 52 (skill) hunter can tell them apart.” When Cang Jie heard this, he 53 (sudden) had an idea. He thought, “If everything has its own shape, why not draw their 54 (shape) to represent them?” And he discovered that these simple symbols could record many things without mistakes.
Cang Jie showed the symbols to the Yellow Emperor, who exclaimed (惊叹), “This is an amazing invention! We will call them ‘characters’!” From then on, more and more characters 55 (invent).
PBL in Action: How to Make the Robotics Club Great Again PBL (Project-Based Learning) is all about learning by solving real problems. You work in groups to explore challenges, work out solutions, organize activities, and improve together. Now, let’s use PBL to help solve a real problem!
Sam is the leader of the Robotics Club. However, the club faces a key problem: many members no longer join the club activities. Here’s how he uses the four steps from PBL to make the club popular again.
Step 1 Find the Real Challenges
Sam surveys 10 old members: they think the activities are too hard for beginners and the tools are out of date. He sets a goal-win back old members and attract new ones.
Step 2 Work out Solutions Together
To solve these problems, Sam forms a group of six robot lovers. They aim for easy, fun activities with new tools. So they make a plan. Some of them find the latest Robotics sets, and others design beginner-friendly challenges. Sam also asks a teacher for advice and help.
Step 3 Organize Some Activities
Once ready, they hold a “Robotics Day”: teaching step-by-step robot basics, then letting students try the mini-challenges. After that, they ask students questions like “Did you enjoy it?” “Will you return?” to see what they think of the club.
Step 4 Review & Improve
Finally, the group reviews progress: checking if old members return and new ones join. They also make improvements-for example, if students say “the challenges are too easy,” they will add more difficult tasks next time.
Students benefit greatly through project work. So if you’re interested in something, why not start with project-based learning?

A.Art. B.Nature. C.Culture.

24.根据第三段中“In the wild, the birds’ parents are the ones that teach them this important information.”以及第四段中“This type of knowledge is called cultural knowledge.”

固定结构a way to do sth.
“At first, this worked well…soon, there were too many things, and the knots became confusing.”

Dear Mr. Smith,
I’m writing to share my plan for the Class English Book Corner Activity (a PBL project) in our class and need your valuable guidance and support.
The activity aims to raise our interest in English reading and develop good reading habits. It will be held in our classroom every Friday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:00. We plan to have a “Book Sharing” session where students introduce their favorite English books, and a “Role Play” activity based on short stories.
Could you kindly recommend some suitable English books for us? Also, would you please join us and share your reading experience? Your help would be highly appreciated.
Best,
Li Ming
第一段明确指出“PBL (Project-Based Learning) is all about learning by solving real problems.”,因此答案是原文直接信息,需完整提取。
57.第二段指出“the club faces a key problem: many members no longer join the club activities.”,这是原文中的具体表述,直接提取即可。
58.第二步中明确提到“Sam also asks a teacher for advice and help.”,因此答案是A teacher,原文直接信息。
59.文章以Step 1到Step 4四个步骤展开,且第一段提到“he uses the four steps from PBL”,因此答案是Four。
根据文章主旨,PBL的核心是通过解决真实问题来学习,第一段“learning by solving real problems”以及最后一段“Students benefit greatly through project work”均可作为依据,合理作答即可。
