PART THREE (Thornfield Hall)
One afternoon I walked to the village to post a letter for Mrs Fairfax. It was winter, and the weather was very cold. There was ice on the road. As I walked back to Thornfield Hall, I heard the sound of a horse on the road behind me. I stood aside to let the horse go past. The rider did not see me. He was a stranger with dark hair. Suddenly the horse slipped and fell down on the ice. The man was lying in the road. As I ran forward to help, he struggled to get up.
“Are you OK, sir?” I asked.
For a moment, the stranger was not able to answer me. Then he looked at me in surprise.
“Can I do anything to help?” I asked again.
“You can stand on one side while I catch my horse,” he replied.
But the horse managed to get up by itself, and I realized that it was the stranger himself who got injured. He tried to stand up, but his injured leg was hurting too much. I helped him to get back onto his horse, and he rode away without thanking me.
“Who is he?” I asked myself. “He is not very handsome and not at all polite, but he looks interesting. I would like to know him.”
When I arrived back at Thornfield, everyone was very excited and busy. I asked Mrs Fairfax what was happening.
“Mr Rochester has returned,” she said. “But he may go away again soon. He wants to see you and Adele, Miss Eyre. Go and put on your best dress. He will see you after dinner.”
After dinner, I took Adele to see Mr Rochester in his room. When I entered the room, I stopped in surprise and stared at the man who was sitting in the chair. It was the man who had fallen from his horse. The interesting stranger was Mr Rochester!

Making waves: Two sound wave experiments
Can you see sounds? Of course not. Sound waves are invisible. You can only hear them! They travel through the air and make your eardrums vibrate (振动). You can get an idea of how sound waves vibrate your eardrums by trying these experiments.
Experiment 1: Dancing Rice
Let’s do it as the following steps:
* ________________________________________
* ________________________________________
* ________________________________________
* ________________________________________
* Hit the small pot with a spoon over the bowl.
Did the rice dance? Why?
When you tapped the pot, you made sound waves. They made your eardrums vibrate. (That’s why you heard the tap!) The sound waves also made the plastic wrap vibrate. The vibration made the rice hop (跳动).
What happens if you bang the pot harder, to make a louder sound? Does the rice hop higher?
When you make a louder sound, you make more powerful sound waves. They make the plastic wrap — and your eardrums — vibrate even more.
Experiment 2: ▲
With an adult’s help, fill a stemmed glass with water. Hold the base of the glass with one hand. (Don’t hold the stem.) Dip your finger into the water, then slide your wet finger around the rim of the glass. Listen! With a little practice (and maybe with the help of an adult), you will be able to make the glass sing! How?
Your finger makes the glass vibrate. The vibration sends sound waves through the air to your ears. When the glass vibrates just the right way, you hear a clear, pleasant tone.
Of course, you can’t see the sound waves the glass makes. But look inside the glass. The vibration of the glass makes tiny waves in the water. Can you see them near the edge of the glass?
Add more water to the glass and try your experiment again. Then try it with less water in the glass. What do you hear?
11. Which of the following steps is the right order of Experiment 1?
①Pull plastic wrap (塑料膜) tight (紧的).
②Place plastic wrap over a large bowl.
③Hold a pot upside down above the rice.
④Add some rice on top.
A. ①-③-②-④ B. ②-③-④-① C. ②-①-④-③ D. ①-④-②-③
12. What made the rice hop?
A. The vibration of the plastic wrap. B. The type of spoon used.
C. The weight of the rice. D. The size of the bowl.
13. Which “tone” in the following statements has the same meaning as the underlined word “tone”?
A. Don’t speak to me in that tone, Tom.
B. I’d like this shirt in warm tones of brown and orange.
C. Jim wants to know how to improve his skin tone.
D. The full rich tone of the trumpet(小号)makes us excited.
14. Which of the following can be put in the ▲ ?
A. Singing Glasses B. Singing fingers C. Dancing glasses D. Jumping water
15. According to the passage, which picture is wrong?
A. B. C. D.

Perler beads, also known as “pindou” in China, have become very popular among young people. These small plastic cylinders (塑料圆柱体) are placed on pegboards (小钉板) to form patterns. Then, they melt together into a fixed design at a very high heat.
The craft first appeared in Sweden in the 1970s. It was originally created to help older people stay active and reduce loneliness during long winters. Today, it is loved by many young Chinese. During the Spring Festival, bookings for perler bead workshops increased by over 9,000 percent!
Why do young people love it so much? One reason is that it helps them relax. When focusing on placing beads, they enter a state called “flow.” This makes them feel calm and happy. Another reason is that it gives them a strong sense of control. In a fast-changing world, following a simple pattern and getting a predictable result brings great comfort. Perler beads also serves as a new social tool. After finishing a project, many share their work on social media and get lots of likes. Some even use it as a way to socialize lightly — enjoying a shared hobby without too much pressure.
In short, perler beads offer more than just fun. They help young people relax, gain a sense of control, and build easy social connections in a creative way.

C
Making waves: Two sound wave experiments
Can you see sounds? Of course not. Sound waves are invisible. You can only hear them! They travel through the air and make your eardrums vibrate (振动). You can get an idea of how sound waves vibrate your eardrums by trying these experiments.
Experiment 1: Dancing Rice
Let’s do it as the following steps:
* ________________________________________
* ________________________________________
* ________________________________________
* ________________________________________
A. B. C. D.
【答案】11. C 12. A 13. D 14. A 15. D
实验的解释部分的“The sound waves also made the plastic wrap vibrate. The vibration made the rice hop.”表明,让米粒跳动的是塑料膜的振动。
【13题详解】
文中“tone”出现在实验二“you hear a clear, pleasant tone”,意为“(声音的)音调/音色”。

I’m writing to tell you about the mental health survey among students of Huaxing Middle School.
According to the results, schoolwork pressure makes up 36.1% of students’ stress, while parent-child relationship takes up 20.7%. Other sources account for the remaining part. It’s clear that both study and family communication are the main sources of stress for these teenagers.
To improve parent-child relationships, students can share their daily life and true feelings with parents regularly, instead of keeping worries to themselves. Meanwhile, parents should listen patiently and avoid comparing their children with others. Open, honest communication can greatly reduce this kind of stress and build a warmer family relationship.
I hope my suggestions will be helpful.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
