To better understand how to support children and young people’s motivation to write in school, we asked them what would make them want to write. Their responses offer valuable insight into the conditions and experiences that develop genuine engagement with writing (see Figure 1).
The findings indicate that cultivating (培养) environments that prioritise freedom of choice, personal and social relevance, and meaningful engagement may be instrumental in enhancing young people’s motivation to write in school.
Figure 1: Key factors that would stimulate a desire to write in school.
Figure 2: A word cloud of students topic preferences for writing.
When asked what they would most like to write about in school if they could choose, young writers suggested a wide range of topics. A word cloud visualizes their preferences, where the size of each word corresponds to its frequency in the responses (see Figure 2).
Our interviews with students also reveal that they are most motivated when writing allows them to explore both the world around them and the worlds they imagine.
Overall, our research highlights that writing in school is most meaningful when it is rooted in connection to self, to others and to the world, and experienced in its power to engage, bring power, inspire thought and shape identity. As a result, it is suggested that school-based writing should not be only about producing perfect texts but about cultivating young writers who are invested, confident, curious and socially connected.
21.What is most likely to motivate students to write?
A.Rewards. B.Autonomy. C.Interest. D.Experiences.
22.Which of the following would students probably prefer to write about?
A.A famous song. B.A fashion trend. C.A past civilization. D.A personal interview.
23.Who is the passage most probably intended for?
A.Policy makers. B.Young writers . C.Lab researchers. D.School educators.

A South Florida scientist is challenging traditional views of what a scientist should look like and gaining wide online attention. Jordon King, a microbiologist and science communicator, has drawn growing interest in his research in Everglades National Park, where he studies one of the ecosystem’s most vital yet least understood components: floc.
Floc, a loose, organic material found in wetland soils, can reveal environmental changes over time, particularly those caused by human activities like freshwater restoration. Floc may not sound exciting, but it is critical to the ecosystem. Unlike compact soil, floc helps form soil deposits, which supports steady plant growth. Plants, in turn, provide food for animals, and if floc disappears, this delicate balance breaks down, risking the entire ecosystem’s collapse.
Over the past year, King has collected more than 200 soil samples for his research. His dedication earned him a master’s degree from Florida International University — though the journey was far from easy. He reached out to about 40 professors before getting a positive response to move his work forward.
King later began sharing his work on social media, posting videos from the Everglades and breaking down complex science in an engaging, accessible way. What started as a casual idea quickly caught on, with viewers drawn to both his passion and his genuineness.
“People often comment, ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover,’” King said. “That’s exactly what I’m experiencing. What makes me stand out is being myself, not following the traditional image of a scientist.”
King loves what he does, and he told NBC6 that he hoped to keep focusing on his research, while using social media to share his work, make a living, and inspire more people to get involved in science.
24.What can we learn about floc according to the passage?
A.It directly increases local animal populations.
B.It shows how to control plant growth in wetland soil.
C.It reveals environmental changes caused by humans.
D.It proves compact soil harms the ecosystem’s balance.
25.What contributed to King’s advancing his work?
A.Obtaining professional support to carry on.
B.Finding the right species for research.
C.Collecting enough funds for study.
D.Explaining complex science on social media.
26.What makes King stand out online?
A.His breakthrough in freshwater restoration research.
B.His style challenging the typical image of a scientist.
C.The complexity of his floc research in the Everglades.
D.His decision to share complicated science on social media.
27.Which of the following best describe King?
A.Energetic and cautious. B.Decisive and sympathetic.
C.Humorous and conventional. D.Innovative and passionate.

For centuries, the soil was considered a silent world. This perception, however, is now being overturned by scientists who are discovering that the ground beneath our feet is, in fact, full of life.
The revelation began with an experiment by Marcus Maeder, a sound artist and researcher. When he first pushed a specialized microphone into a mountain grassy field, his headphones erupted with a loud mix of strange sounds — thrumming, chirring, and scraping. This accidental discovery opened the door to the study of living sounds in soil, which uses sensors pushed into the soil to pick up the tiny movements made by underground life.
This hidden world is home to immense biodiversity. Ecologist Carolyn-Monika Görres’s research on root-eating beetle larvae (甲虫幼虫), provides a fascinating example. She discovered that the larvae produce distinct, species-specific sounds together, a process called stridulation (摩擦发声). In her lab, she observed that larvae in groups stridulated frequently — over 600 times in a few hours. This unique sound helps scientists identify and monitor these pests, which can cause significant damage to crops.
The practical applications are significant. In agriculture, this technology could allow farmers to find the exact location of pest problems, enabling targeted pesticide (农药) use instead of blanket applications, thus protecting soil health.
However, this research has also revealed an important but worrying truth. The same sensitive equipment picks up the noise of human activity — distant traffic, construction, and airplanes — deep within the soil. The impact of this noise pollution on underground life is still unknown, but it is unlikely to be positive. More alarmingly, in intensively farmed soils, the natural mix of sounds often falls silent, indicating a loss of biodiversity and degraded land health.
Listening to the soil does more than satisfy scientific curiosity. It reveals the complex, vital ecosystem that sustains us and serves as a strong warning that our actions can quiet its essential chorus, urging us to become better caretakers of the land.
28.What does the underlined word “overturned” in the first paragraph mean?
A.Ignored. B.Confirmed. C.Explained. D.Challenged.
29.What can we learn about Marcus Maeder’s experiment?
A.It aimed to record life in soil. B.It led to an unexpected finding.
C.It pioneered the use of sensors. D.It proved previous assumptions.
30.How can the technology benefit soil health?
A.By replacing chemical use. B.By preventing pest problems.
C.By applying chemicals precisely. D.By strengthening pesticide effect.
31.What does the author intend to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Curiosity fuels scientific progress.
B.Human actions may silence the soil.
C.More research on soil life is needed.
D.The soil ecosystem is highly complex.

Do you have a colleague who complains about their personal problems every single day? Or a relative who criticizes your lifestyle but still asks for your help? A new study indicates that coping with people who are difficult to get along with may speed up the aging process.
Published in a leading science journal, the research confirms a link between stressful social relationships and accelerated biological aging. The study involved over 2,300 adults who provided saliva samples for DNA testing. They also answered questions about their social circles, identifying people who frequently cause them stress or make their lives difficult.
The findings are clear: the more “annoying people” one has to deal with, the faster their body seems to age. On average, each stressful relationship was linked to a 1.5% increase in the speed of biological aging. While this might sound small, it can add up over time.
The reason behind this is likely chronic stress. Constantly interacting with difficult people keeps the body’s stress system active. This leads to higher levels of stress hormones, which can cause inflammation and weaken the immune system, ultimately damaging cells and speeding up the aging process.
The study also found that not all annoying people have the same effect. Stressful relationships with family members, who are harder to avoid, were more strongly linked to faster aging than those with friends or coworkers. Interestingly, however, having an annoying husband or wife did not show a significant connection to accelerated aging. Researchers suggest that the positive aspects of a marriage might balance out the negative ones. Furthermore, the study noted that women, people with existing health problems, and those who had difficult childhoods were more likely to report having such stressful relationships.
This research highlights that our social environment is a powerful factor in our physical health. While we cannot avoid all difficult people, being aware of their impact is the first step. Managing these relationships and seeking support from positive friends and family might be a simple yet effective way to stay healthier and younger for longer.
32.How do difficult people speed up our aging according to the text?
A.By causing ongoing stress. B.By lowering our sleep quality.
C.By breaking our social circles. D.By changing our DNA structure.
33.Which stressful relationship showed little effect on aging according to the text?
A.Critical relatives. B.Demanding coworkers.
C.Annoying family members. D.Troublesome husband or wife.
34.What is the author’s most likely suggestion?
A.Staying away from all annoying people.
B.Building a positive support network actively.
C.Accepting the fact of biological aging calmly.
D.Putting an end to ties with difficult family members.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Marriage helps you stay young B.Chronic stress harms your health
C.How to deal with difficult people D.Annoying people make you age faster

Discipline and the Road to Maturity
Most do not see that life is difficult. 36 But once we truly see this truth, we go beyond it — then life is no longer difficult. Discipline is what we need.
Delaying of satisfaction is the first tool of discipline. It requires us to give up immediate pleasure for greater satisfaction in the long run. 37 Yet many adults never fully learn this simple lesson. They refuse to face life’s necessary hardships to achieve goals and live fulfilling lives.
The second tool is acceptance of responsibility. This means that we are responsible for our own lives, instead of blaming others and making excuses. 38 Some feel responsible for everything that goes wrong in the world. In fact, they are avoiding the pain of helplessness. Others refuse to take responsibility for anything, in an attempt to avoid feeling guilty and ashamed.
39 This calls on us to see the world as it is. We should not view it as we wish or fear it to be. We must accept the truth even when painful or inconvenient, and change our beliefs and behaviors that contradict it. Our view of reality is like a map that guides us through life’s journey. If it is false and inaccurate, we will be lost.
The fourth tool of discipline is balancing. We need to view things from multiple perspectives. 40 Balancing requires us to be flexible and adaptable. We should compromise when needed, forgive, let go of what no longer helps, and embrace change. In short, balancing requires us to be mature. And maturity is the goal of all spiritual growth.
A.Everyone is convinced of the truth.
B.Children also desire instant enjoyment.
C.Then comes the tool of dedication to truth.
D.Instead they often complain about their burdens.
E.Yet many people fall into two opposite extremes.
F.Only then can we make decisions in our best interests overall.
G.A little boy learns it by eating his vegetables first to earn a cookie.

The community library was Megan’s peaceful kingdom, a place of quiet whispers and turning pages. Every summer vacation, she worked as a student volunteer, feeling responsible for protecting this quiet space.
Lately, a boy named Liam had become her challenge. Liam wasn’t rude — he just couldn’t sit still. Like clockwork, he would get up to “stretch his legs, ”pacing between the bookshelves. Sometimes he’d accidentally knock over a chair. Once, absorbed in a picture book, he let out a loud“Whoa!”when he saw a giant dinosaur filled the page. In the silence, each sound drew looks from other readers.
Yesterday, when Megan walked over and reminded him gently again, Liam’s face turned red. “I’m really sorry, ”he whispered sincerely. “I don’t mean to. I just. I really like being here. ”She believed him. She had noticed that Liam was a curious explorer of books. He would pull out a book on dinosaurs, reading with intense focus for a few minutes, then move on to another about volcanoes or space rockets. He just loved the library.
Megan went back to her office. A note on the head librarian’s desk caught her eye. It read, “More Lively Reading Activities? Book sharing? Acting?” Seeing this, Megan suddenly remembered the librarian had mentioned she could feel free to use the garden at the back of the library. It was a place where some unused items were stored — some old chairs, folding tables, all piled up gathering dust under a large tree. At the time, Megan hadn’t thought much about it. But now, the thoughts of directing Liam’s energy and making use of the garden connected in her mind. Perhaps the solution wasn’t to quiet Liam down, but to give his energy and love for books a positive stage, right here in their own library.
An idea for a “Garden Reading Corner”project, aimed at young readers, began to take shape. The next morning, she found Liam among the bookshelves. “Want to do something really cool?”she said, her voice low but excited. Liam did not answer at once, but the eager light in his eyes said everything.

For the next week, Megan and Liam busied themselves with the project. They first cleaned the messy garden, moving old chairs and folding tables to a sunny spot under the big tree. Liam scrubbed the dirt off the furniture and arranged them in a circle for kids. Megan brought colorful posters of dinosaurs and space — Liam’s favorite — and they hung them on the tree. They also picked out a lot of picture books and storybooks for young readers and placed them on a wooden shelf from the storage. Every evening, they discussed fun activities like book sharing and role-playing, with Liam coming up with many creative ideas.
On the opening day of the project, they waited nervously in the garden. Soon many kids came, attracted by the colorful posters and interesting books. Liam became a great guide: he read dinosaur stories aloud and acted out some parts with vivid gestures, making everyone laugh happily. The garden was filled with soft laughter and reading voices, never disturbing the quiet inside the library. The head librarian came and praised them warmly, saying the garden reading corner was a wonderful addition. Megan smiled, knowing she had found the best way to let Liam’s energy shine and keep the library quiet.
