Hey kids!Sleep is important! You might have heard this before.Scientists found out that
sleep helps you grow strong and keeps you from getting sick. And guess what?A new study
shows sleep also works on your grades.
The scientist,Jeffrey Grossman, wanted to see how sleep helps students in school. He
asked 100 students to wear a special wristband()called Fitbit. This cool thing can tell how
long you sleep and if you wake up a lot during the night. The students wore these wristbands all
term long, and at the end,Grossman looked at their sleep information.
He found some interesting things. As expected, kids who tossed and turned a lot at night
didn't do well on their tests. The same went for those who didn't get enough sleep.A
Whether you sleep more or less during the night before the test does nothing to your grades! So
is staying up studying before the big test okay? No!!!What really mattered was sleeping the
same hours every night for a week or even a month before the test."That means a student who
sleeps seven hours at night, every night, will do better than a student who sleeps 7.5 hours one
night and 6.5 another night,"Grossman said. This was really unexpected!
How long you sleep, how well you sleep, and sleeping the same hours every night together
made a big difference to your test scores. And it appeared especially important for boys.
Grossman's team is not sure why.But boys who didn't sleep well or fell asleep at different times
did worse on tests than girls who had the same sleep. These findings show that sleep is really
important for students to study well in school. And knowing how to get good sleep can make a
big difference!

I still remember when I sat down on my bed, suddenly the wooden bed board broke right
under me!My face turned as red as a tomato.
That bed was weak,and I was too heavy.At 1.72 metres tall,I weighed 95 kg.I never
liked sports.I spent all my time at my desk, either doing homework or reading storybooks.
What's worse,my parents often cooked me lots of meat. They wanted me to be strong. But
instead of getting praise,I only heard chairs and beds creak(嘎吱作响)when I sat on them.
News says over half of adults and almost 20%0 of school kids in China are too heavy. Many
say they don't have time to exercise. They order takeout food more often, eat snacks while
watching TV,and don't even notice how much they're eating.

But being busy isn't a good excuse! After breaking that poor bed,I decided to change.I
didn't have time for the gym,so I started with small things.Every weekday,I ride my bike 10
kilometres to get home from work. It's fun,and I can see the sunset! On rainy days,I get off
the bus two stops early and walk the rest.On weekends,I clean my apartment from top to
bottom.
I also changed my eating habits.I still love eating meat, but now I eat more vegetables,
like carrots and cucumbers.I drink milk instead of soda, and I snack on apples or oranges
instead of chips.
At first,it was hard.But I lost 21 kilograms!Now when I travel,I don't hold my breath
when sitting on hotel beds.
