Zhang Xuefeng, China’s most famous education influencer, died suddenly at age 41 on Tuesday due to cardiac arrest. Known for his ruthlessly blunt advice on how to win in China’s educational rat race, he had built a massive following over nearly a decade. His signature rapid-fire, snark-infused patter first shot him to fame in 2016 with a video summarizing China’s top 34 universities in seven minutes. From there, he launched a consulting company, charging thousands of dollars for courses that helped students choose majors, internships, and careers based on cold-eyed calculations of test scores, family backgrounds, and whether they prioritized money or stability.
To his detractors, Zhang was cynical and utilitarian. But to his tens of millions of fans — especially those from less privileged backgrounds — he embodied a rare willingness to speak harsh truths. “I come from an ordinary family,” he once wrote. “If you come from a wealthy family, you have more choices. But most families aren’t that well-off, so when choosing a major, you have to choose one that puts food on the table.” The liberal arts? Only good for service jobs, he declared. Finance? Don’t bother unless your family has connections. His 2023 comment that parents should knock their children unconscious rather than let them study journalism sparked days of online debate. Critics said he misunderstood the point of education. His fans only grew more devoted. As one Shanghai-based outlet noted, “The comment section is dominated by one voice: The poor need Zhang Xuefeng.”
But Zhang had recently landed in trouble. In September, his social media accounts were blocked during a campaign by China’s cyberspace administration to eliminate what it called “excessively pessimistic” sentiment. Some observers speculated his true offense was speaking bluntly about young people’s economic anxieties at a time when the government was trying to hide high youth unemployment rates. He recovered his accounts a month later and returned to streaming multiple times a week. The morning he died, he did a broadcast, then went for a run — as was his habit.
His death prompted an outpouring not only of shock but also of reflection across Chinese social media. One popular hashtag asked: Had he steered young Chinese to better lives or discouraged their idealism? Another, “Excessive self-discipline,” emerged in response to reports that he had collapsed after running. A fellow influencer, Zhu Wei, posted a tribute but also offered a sobering warning: “The cruelest thing about the age of internet traffic is that nothing lasts even a month before it’s forgotten. Everyone will soon go back to their usual state, endlessly striving and slogging, never able to stop.”
24. According to the passage, what was the primary reason for Zhang Xuefeng’s popularity among less privileged students?
A. He offered free consulting services to students from ordinary families.
B. He was known for telling harsh truths about how to succeed despite inequality.
C. He criticized the government’s education policies on social media platforms.
D. He encouraged students to pursue liberal arts degrees regardless of job prospects.
25. The phrase “cold-eyed calculations” (paragraph 1) most nearly means ________.
A. emotional and impulsive decision-making based on personal passion.
B. mathematical analysis of statistical data regarding employment rates.
C. realistic and unemotional evaluations of practical factors and outcomes.
D. pessimistic assumptions about one’s future regardless of one’s background.
26. Why does the author include Zhu Wei’s quote about “nothing lasts even a month before it’s forgotten”?
A. To argue that Zhang’s influence was never truly significant.
B. To suggest that public attention is short-lived and society quickly returns to old habits.
C. To criticize the government for blocking Zhang’s social media accounts.
D. To prove that educational influencers have no real impact on students’ lives.
27. Which of the following statements about Zhang Xuefeng can be inferred from the passage?
A. His blunt remarks about journalism ultimately caused him to lose most of his fans.
B. He was punished by the cyberspace administration solely for his views on Taiwan.
C. His death led many young Chinese to completely abandon their pursuit of success.
D. His approach to education consulting reflected a utilitarian rather than idealistic philosophy.

In the high-mountain grasslands of eastern California, a gray owl (猫头鹰) rests beside a road within Yosemite National Park. He is focused on his prey across the road. As he takes off, flying just inches over the pavement, a car speeds by, narrowly missing him.
Many owls are not as fortunate. Since 2003, 23 individuals — over 11% of the present population — have been killed by vehicles. These small, genetically unique owls struggle to survive. Park biologist Heather Mackey says they’re a signature species of Yosemite.
Therefore, Yosemite partnered with the Institute for Bird Populations to conduct a study on owl activities from 2022 to 2024. The first step was the hardest: capturing the owls to attach trackers. The team finally fitted six owls with specially designed lightweight GPS backpacks. By downloading GPS signals monthly, Dustin Garrison, National Park Service biologist as well as the primary field technician on the study, and his colleagues gained precise data on the owls’ habitat use and hunting patterns.
Owls depend on Yosemite’s wet, open grasslands surrounded by old-growth forest and rich in the birds’ favored prey. But these habitats are increasingly at risk. More alarmingly, owls seemed to favor dangerous roadsides for hunting. “The study revealed a high concentration of owl territories along roadsides,” notes biologist Ramiro Aragon. “It might be that roads cut through areas owls use. So it’s hard to say if they’re attracted to roads or actually just caught in between.”
Data also shows owl activity overlaps (重叠) with traffic peaks. They were most active after sunset and between 4 and 6 a.m., while public entry without reservation is allowed before 6 a.m. “We can use the data to regulate the timing so we’re not creating an artificial push of traffic right around peak hours of owl activity,” Mackey says. Researchers also propose other protective measures, including reducing speed limits along key roads, and modifying roadside vegetation to make it less attractive.
“There are two ways to approach changes,” Garrison notes. “You either modify human behavior, or you modify wildlife behavior.”
28. Why does the author describe the scene in Paragraph 1?
A. To show how fortunate the owl is.
B. To predict the outcome of the owl.
C. To present how natural the park is.
D. To illustrate the problem the owls face.
29. What was the most challenging part of the study?
A. Putting trackers on owls. B. Observing owls at night.
C. Making lighter backpacks. D. Analyzing the GPS data.
30. What is Ramiro’s attitude to owls’ preference for roadside hunting?
A. Concerned. B. Subjective. C. Supportive. D. Critical.
31. What suggestion is proposed to solve the overlap between owl activity and traffic peaks?
A. Limit road speed. B. Set public entry limitation.
C. Change roadside plants. D. Adjust reservation schedule.
D
Scientists have created a three-dimensional “heart-on-a-chip” (HOC) that could provide a breakthrough in the fight against the world’s leading cause of death, cardiovascular (心血管) disease.
One major challenge is that we cannot easily test how a human heart will react to a drug or disease without putting someone at risk. This engineered heart tissue beats on its own, it releases chemicals to start muscular activity, and it responds predictably to common drugs. It’s the first to include a two-way sensing platform that provides real-time tracking of activity throughout the heart tissue down to the cellular level.
In a recent paper, scientists from multiple Canadian institutions describe how they achieved this “significant advance in heart tissue engineering and drug testing.” The key advance here is the integration of sensors that can detect both large-area and small-area heart activity. Both current HOC platforms and the research team’s previous version, described in a 2024 paper, lack high-resolution cellular-level sensing. Small-area sensing is vital because many cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are associated with impairment in heart muscle cells, the individual beating cells that form heart muscle tissue. As a result, measuring cellular function is critical for preventing heart failure in patients with CVDs.
To build their HOCs, the researchers harvested heart muscle cells and heart connective tissue cells from lab animals. They placed these cells into a soft structure rich in fibrous proteins and nutrients to stimulate growth, and then seeded them on tiny, flexible silicon-based chips (芯片). This is a major step toward testing diseases in the lab, since cell-generated forces govern the development of heart tissues, including their formation, remodeling, contraction efficiency, wound healing, and cancer progression.
Next, the researchers plan to model specific disorders by building heart tissues using cells from patients living with various heart conditions. These include a type of genetic heart muscle disease that can lead to heart failure, as well as irregular heartbeats, an umbrella of disorders that cause heart rate abnormalities.
32. How does the new HOC differ from earlier versions?
A. It uses human patient cells. B. It beats with external help.
C. It senses cellular heart activity. D. It uses more flexible materials.
33. What does the underlined word “impairment” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Abnormal working. B. Quick recovery.
C. Natural growth. D. Regular beating.
34. What do the researchers intend to do with HOCs?
A. Replace animal testing. B. Grow full hearts for patients.
C. Cure DNA-based heart diseases. D. Study patient-specific heart diseases.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The New Methods to Build 3D hearts
B. A Fresh Process for Heart Drug Testing
C. An Innovation in Heart Tissue Engineering
D. The Fight Against Cardiovascular Diseases

If you want to age well, you probably already know the basics: eat a balanced diet, go for walks, stay socially engaged. ____36____ That is strength training. Experts say it matters just as much as the basics, and sometimes even more.
For decades, weightlifting was viewed as the domain of bodybuilders, powerlifters, or young athletes. ____37____ Lifting weights — or using your own bodyweight against resistance — turns out to be one of the most powerful tools we have for protecting health. It’s not about shaping a six-pack. It’s about strengthening bones and muscles, and even lowering the risk of chronic (慢性的) diseases.
Bones may feel solid, but they’re surprisingly dynamic. They respond to the stresses you put on them, getting stronger when they’re challenged and weaker when they’re not. Every time you do a push-up, or pick up a weight, you’re putting gentle stress on your bones. That pressure acts like a signal to your body. ____38____ Over time, bones’ structure gets stronger.
____39____ Muscle itself is metabolically (代谢上) active tissue, meaning it burns calories even when you’re sitting still. Think of it as the body’s built-in engine, quietly working along to keep your metabolism running. Strength training also offers protection against many of the most common chronic diseases of aging.
So how do you get started? You don’t need to lift the heaviest weights in the gym. What matters more is showing up regularly and building strength gradually. ____40____ Even short, steady sessions a few times a week can add up to meaningful gains in health.
A. Its benefits don’t stop with bones.
B. It tells your body to reinforce bones.
C. But the study has overturned that assumption.
D. This process, however, can be risky for older adults.
E. But there is one more crucial habit for long-term health.
F. You also need to make it a habit you can sustain for years.
G. Therefore, focusing on diet and exercise is still the top priority.

Mark had a secret: he couldn’t ride a bike. It wasn’t because he never tried. His father taught him one summer when he was seven. He ran alongside him, holding the seat, and shouting “Keep pedalling (踩踏板)!” But Mark’s balance was terrible. He fell into the bushes, and both knees bled. After two weeks of trying, his dad sighed, “Maybe next year.” But that “next year” never came. The childhood shame stayed with him.
Then, he grew up and had a family of his own. He never shared the secret with anyone but his wife, Lena. Most of the time, it didn’t matter. When friends invited him on bike trips, he volunteered to drive and bring snacks. When the kids were old enough to learn to ride, Lena offered to teach them.
But lately, his twelve-year-old daughter Alice and seven-year-old son Bob were planning the first-ever “Family Bike Adventure.” They had picked a campsite (营地) by the lake and mapped a biking route around it. Every night, they’d argue about who would win the family race. Mark smiled through every conversation, but inside, his stomach tightened. In every other way, Mark was a perfect dad. He never missed a school event and could fix everything in the house. Admitting he couldn’t ride? That was hard.
So he made a plan. After the kids went to bed, he slipped out and wheeled a bike to the empty market parking lot to practise. But thirty years after that summer, his body still remembered nothing. The bike seemed to have a mind of its own, and he just couldn’t control it. His legs shook. His hands ached. Sometimes he would crash into the wall.
The next day, Alice, a considerate girl, asked about his bruised (淤青的) knees. But he said nothing. After several nights, Lena said to him, “You don’t have to do this. The kids don’t care. No one can do everything.” Mark shook his head. “They think I can. Let me try a little longer.”
One night, after he fell off the bike again, he heard a voice. “Dad?” His heart stopped.

As a professional life coach who has worked with some of the world's richest and most famous people, i'm often asked what success looks like. It's funny because they all expect me to say having fast cars, private planes or expensive journey. But that's not the answer I give them. Sure, if you earned the sort of money that buys you a large house sort of boat, it's tempting to say that is the definition of success. But I disagree to me, success is happiness, even if you have enough money to buy a small country, if you're not happy, you cannot claim to be a success. Success is waking up in the morning and being grateful for livia another day. It's being surrounded by people who love and by people who love you back. Success is being able to provide for your family and being content with who you are as a person, regardless of social status or money making achievements. Would I like a big house and a large car? I guess so, but I wouldn't guarantee me happiness. I'm happy to take questions now. I'm also happy to sign anyone's book if they would like me to thank you all for coming to my book launch.
B 25. C 26. B 27. D

根据第二段中“But to his tens of millions of fans — especially those from less privileged backgrounds — he embodied a rare willingness to speak harsh truths. As one Shanghai-based outlet noted, “The comment section is dominated by one voice: The poor need Zhang Xuefeng.”(但对于他数以千万计的粉丝——尤其是那些来自弱势背景的粉丝来说——他体现了一种罕见的、愿意说出残酷真相的态度。
根据划线词所在句“From there, he launched a consulting company, charging thousands of dollars for courses that helped students choose majors, internships, and careers based on cold-eyed calculations of test scores, family backgrounds, and whether they prioritized money or stability.
根据最后一段中Zhu Wei的话“The cruelest thing about the age of internet traffic is that nothing lasts even a month before it’s forgotten. Everyone will soon go back to their usual state, endlessly striving and slogging, never able to stop. (互联网流量时代最残酷的事情是,任何事情过不了一个月就会被遗忘。每个人很快就会回到他们通常的状态,无休止地奋斗和苦干,永远无法停下来)”可知,作者引用朱伟的话是为了暗示公众注意力是短暂的,社会很快就会回到旧习惯。故选B项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“From there, he launched a consulting company, charging thousands of dollars for courses that helped students choose majors, internships, and careers based on cold-eyed calculations of test scores, family backgrounds, and whether they prioritized money or stability. (从那时起,他创办了一家咨询公司,开设收费数千美元的课程,帮助学生根据对考试成绩、家庭背景以及他们更看重金钱还是稳定等因素的冷静分析,来选择专业、实习和职业方向)”和第二段中“If you come from a wealthy family, you have more choices. But most families aren’t that well-off, so when choosing a major, you have to choose one that puts food on the table. (如果你来自富裕家庭,你有更多选择。但大多数家庭并不那么富裕,所以在选择专业时,你必须选择一个能糊口的专业)”可知,张雪峰的教育咨询方法更实际,反映了功利主义而非理想主义的理念。故选D项。
C
D 29. A 30. A 31. D

根据第一段“In the high-mountain grasslands of eastern California, a gray owl (猫头鹰) rests beside a road within Yosemite National Park. He is focused on his prey across the road. As he takes off, flying just inches over the pavement, a car speeds by, narrowly missing him. (在加利福尼亚州东部的高山草原上,一只灰色的猫头鹰栖息在约塞米蒂国家公园内的一条路边。它专注于路对面的猎物。当它起飞,在路面上方仅几英寸处飞行时,一辆汽车疾驰而过,险些撞到它。)”以及第二段“Many owls are not as fortunate. Since 2003, 23 individuals — over 11% of the present population — have been killed by vehicles. (许多猫头鹰就没这么幸运了。自2003年以来,已有23只猫头鹰——超过现有种群数量的11%——被车辆撞死。)”可知,作者描述第一段的场景是为了引出并说明猫头鹰面临被车辆撞击的问题。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The first step was the hardest: capturing the owls to attach trackers.(第一步是最困难的:捕获猫头鹰以安装追踪器。)”
根据第四段““The study revealed a high concentration of owl territories along roadsides,” notes biologist Ramiro Aragon. “It might be that roads cut through areas owls use. So it’s hard to say if they’re attracted to roads or actually just caught in between.” (生物学家拉米罗·阿拉贡指出:“研究显示猫头鹰的领地高度集中在路边。可能是道路穿过了猫头鹰使用的区域。所以很难说它们是被道路吸引,还是实际上只是被困在中间。”)”可知,拉米罗·阿拉贡对猫头鹰偏好路边捕猎的情况表示担忧。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“Data also shows owl activity overlaps (重叠) with traffic peaks. They were most active after sunset and between 4 and 6 a.m., while public entry without reservation is allowed before 6 a.m. “We can use the data to regulate the timing so we’re not creating an artificial push of traffic right around peak hours of owl activity,” Mackey says. (数据还显示猫头鹰的活动与交通高峰重叠。它们在日落后和凌晨4点到6点之间最为活跃,而早上6点前允许无预约入园。麦基说:“我们可以利用这些数据来调整时间安排,这样就不会在猫头鹰活动的高峰期人为地造成交通高峰。)”)可知,为解决猫头鹰活动与交通高峰重叠的问题,建议调整预约时间表。
C 33. A 34. D 35. C
根据第二段中“It’s the first to include a two-way sensing platform that provides real-time tracking of activity throughout the heart tissue down to the cellular level.(这是第一个包含双向传感平台的芯片,可以实时追踪整个心脏组织直至细胞层面的活动)”以及第三段“The key advance here is the integration of sensors that can detect both large-area and small-area heart activity. Both current HOC platforms and the research team’s previous version, described in a 2024 paper, lack high-resolution cellular-level sensing.(这里的关键进展是集成了能够检测大面积和小面积心脏活动的传感器。目前的HOC平台和研究团队之前的版本,在2024年的一篇论文中有所描述,都缺乏高分辨率的细胞级传感)”可知,新型HOC与早期版本的不同之处在于它能够感知细胞层面的心脏活动。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词所在句“many cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are associated with impairment in heart muscle cells, the individual beating cells that form heart muscle tissue. (许多心血管疾病与心肌细胞的impairment有关,心肌细胞是构成心肌组织的单个跳动细胞)”和后文“As a result, measuring cellular function is critical for preventing heart failure (因此,测量细胞功能对于预防心力衰竭至关重要)”可知,心血管疾病与心肌细胞的功能异常或损伤有关。故划线词impairment意为“功能异常;损伤”,与“Abnormal working”意思相近。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Next, the researchers plan to model specific disorders by building heart tissues using cells from patients living with various heart conditions.(接下来,研究人员计划利用患有各种心脏病的患者的细胞构建心脏组织,以模拟特定的疾病)”可知,研究人员打算用HOCs研究患者特定的心脏疾病。
根据第一段“Scientists have created a three-dimensional “heart-on-a-chip” (HOC) that could provide a breakthrough in the fight against the world’s leading cause of death, cardiovascular (心血管) disease.(科学家们创造了一种三维“心脏芯片”(HOC),这可能为对抗世界主要死因——心血管疾病提供突破)”以及第二段至第五段对其功能、优势及研究计划的介绍可知,本文主要介绍了一项心脏组织工程的创新成果,故C项“An Innovation in Heart Tissue Engineering (心脏组织工程的一项创新)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。
E 37. C 38. B 39. A 40. F

Treasure Our Textbooks, Not Tear Them
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A possible version:
Treasure Our Textbooks, Not Tear Them
Recently, I’ve noticed an upsetting sight on campus after the college entrance examination: textbooks are torn into pieces and reference books are thrown everywhere on the playground or near dustbins, which really worries me.
I strongly oppose this behavior. It is not only a waste of learning resources but also disrespectful to the efforts we have put into our studies. Besides, tearing books is not a proper way to relieve pressure but an irrational choice. To improve the situation, here are some practical suggestions. First, we can donate our well-preserved books to younger students, sharing knowledge and care. Second, we can keep some meaningful books as souvenirs to remember our high school days.
Cherishing our books shows respect for our hard work and helps us grow up in a more rational way.

One possible version:
It was Alice, who had followed him out of curiosity. She happened to see him leave at night and the bruises on his knees made her worried. “Dad, what are you doing?” she asked. Mark picked up the bike slowly and asked her to sit down with him. Then he told her everything — the summer at seven, the years of excuses, the fear of letting them down. Alice listened quietly. When he finished, he felt a little embarrassed. But Alice just hugged him. “Dad, we don’t care whether you can ride,” she whispered. “We just want you to be with us.” Mark hugged her back, his throat tight. “Okay,” he said softly. “Of course, I’ll be there.”
That Saturday, when his family went biking, Mark stayed at the campsite happily. He set up the tent, lit the campfire, and started cooking dinner: steak, chicken wings, hot dogs, hot chocolate — everything the kids loved. An hour later, the kids came riding back, tired and hungry. “Daddy! I’m starving!” Bob shouted, grabbing a piece of steak. Alice drank the hot chocolate, leaning against him. “You are the best dad in the world,” she whispered. That night, watching his children sleep soundly, Mark smiled. He couldn’t ride a bike. But he could take good care of the family. And that was enough.
