Near Vihaan and Nav Agarwal’s home, a big garbage dump (垃圾场) caved in, releasing poisonous chemicals into the surrounding streets, which caused a fire to erupt.
Following this event, Vihaan and Nav decided to take action to improve their city’s waste collection to ultimately improve their own health and that of their neighbors. Vihaan struggled with a persistent cough and shortness of breath. He knew his symptoms would not likely improve until his local community improved its waste management solutions.
In 2018, at ages 14 and 11, respectively, the brothers created a home recycling program called One Step Greener that managed recycling for 15 households within their community. Their goal: prevent toxic chemical waste from seeping (渗透) into the environment and creating dangerous health conditions for residents.
At first, the boys felt empowered by taking the action of separating waste into distinct categories. When local officials then informed them that the local garbage collection crew would not pick up their separated bags, they felt momentarily defeated, but persisted in their efforts.
The boys then created a neighborhood coalition to create a unified recycling program, which 15 households took part in. Local authorities adjusted their stance, and the recycling program spread throughout the community with a growing number of households starting to participate.
“The main issue in waste management is that everybody thinks it’s not their job, or if the waste is out of their house, it’s out of their mind,” Vihaan said.
Vihaan and Nav’s program grew from managing 15 households to 3,000 throughout 14 Indian cities. The program offers families involved free door-to-door dry waste pickups. The separated waste is then delivered to warehouses where it is further divided to ensure proper recycling. Newspapers are separated from A4 printing paper, PET plastic from polypropylene, and computer screens from keyboards.
One Step Greener’s goal reads, “One Step Greener’s mission is to transform environmental action into everyday practice by mobilizing youth, building green communities, and designing scalable solutions in waste management, afforestation, and education — starting at the grassroots, and growing toward systems change.”
“It’s an old saying, but collective effort does actually make a difference,” said Vihaan.
24. What inspired Vihaan and Nav to start One Step Greener?
A. The locals’ waste collection failure. B. A project on waste management.
C. A landfill collapse near their home. D. The city’s campaign for recycling.
25. What was local authorities’ attitude to the program after the neighborhood’s participation?
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Dismissive. D. Approving.
26. What did One Step Greener do for the participating households?
A. It picked up dry waste for free. B. It educated them online about recycling.
C. It delivered newspapers to them. D. It paid them for their recyclable materials.
27. What does Vihaan and Nav’s program show?
A. Better late than never. B. Teamwork makes the dream work.
C. Knowledge is power. D. Actions speak louder than words.
【答案】24. C 25. D 26. A 27. B

C
You spend time with friends, share meals with family, and sit close to people you care about. These moments feel simple, but something deeper may be happening. Your body may be changing with every interaction.
Scientists from the University of East Anglia found that social life can shape the bacteria living in your gut (肠道). Many of them help your body work better. Each person has a unique mix. Food and environment affect it, but now scientists see that social interaction also plays a role.
To understand this idea, researchers studied the Seychelles warbler, a small bird that lives on a tiny island and rarely leaves it, which makes it ideal for the study in the long run. “We gathered hundreds of stool (粪便) samples from birds with known social roles — breeding pairs, helpers and non-helpers living in the same group, and in different groups. This allowed us to compare the gut bacteria of birds that interacted closely at the nest versus those that did not,” noted Dr. Lee.
The results showed a clear pattern. Birds that lived together had more similar gut bacteria than those living apart. Besides, interaction matters even more. Birds that spent more time together had gut bacteria that looked more alike. This means daily contact allows bacteria to pass between individuals. Birds that worked closely together, especially at the nest, shared more of these bacteria. These birds fed chicks, stayed near each other, and interacted often.
What does this mean for people? Sharing a home or sitting close creates chances for bacteria to move between people.
“Whether you’re living with a partner, housemate, or family, your daily interactions — from hugging and sharing food-prep spaces — may encourage the exchange of gut microbes,” explained Dr. Lee.
The idea of sharing bacteria may sound strange at first, but not all bacteria are harmful. In fact, many of them help the body function better. Some aid in digestion, while others protect against disease and keep the body balanced. Because of this, sharing beneficial bacteria may even support better health within a household.
This research shows that human connection goes beyond emotions. It also affects the body in hidden ways.
28. Why did researchers choose the Seychelles warblers for their study?
A. They have an ideal gut bacteria structure.
B. Their social roles are more clearly divided.
C. They love living in closely related large groups.
D. Their limited migration is perfect for the study.
29. Which influenced the similarity of gut bacteria among birds according to the study?
A. Close social interactions. B. The way they fed.
C. The type of task they did. D. Different bird species.
30. What does the author try to say in the last two paragraphs?
A. Living separately will lead to poor gut health.
B. The number of friends affects gut bacteria diversity.
C. Human social bonds are an invisible health resource.
D. People’s daily habits determine the level of happiness.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Scientists Discovered a New Species of Bacteria
B. Close Relationship May Be Changing Your Gut Bacteria
C. Sharing Meals Prevents the Spread of Harmful Bacteria
D. Human Connections Can Be Developed Through Activities
【答案】28. D 29. A 30. C 31. B

A team led by Min Zhang and Dabao Zhang at the University of California, Irvine’s Joe C. Wen School of Population & Public Health has developed the most comprehensive maps yet of how genes directly influence one another in brain cells affected by Alzheimer’s disease. These maps reveal which genes are actively controlling others across different cell types in the brain.
To accomplish this, the researchers created a powerful new AI-based system called SIGNET. Unlike traditional tools that only detect genes that appear to move together, it is designed to uncover true causal (因果的) connections. Using this approach, the team identified important biological pathways that may contribute to memory loss and the gradual breakdown of brain tissue.
“Different types of brain cells play distinct roles in Alzheimer’s disease, but how they interact at the molecular level has remained unclear,” said Min Zhang. “Our work provides cell type-specific maps of gene regulation in the Alzheimer’s brain, shifting the field from observing correlations to uncovering the causal mechanisms that actively drive disease progression.”
To build these exhaustive maps, the team analyzed single-cell molecular data from brain samples donated by 272 participants. SIGNET was designed as a scalable, high-performance computing system that combines single-cell RNA sequencing (测序) with whole-genome sequencing data.
Using this method, they constructed causal gene regulatory networks for six major brain cell types. This made it possible to determine which genes are likely directing the activity of others, something conventional correlation-based methods cannot reliably complete.
“Our approach takes advantage of information encoded (编码) in DNA to enable the identification of true causal relationships between genes in the brain,” said Dabao Zhang, co-corresponding author and professor of epidemiology.
The researchers found that the most significant gene disturbances occur in excitatory neurons — the nerve cells that send activating signals — where nearly 6,000 cause-and-effect interactions revealed extensive genetic rewiring as Alzheimer’s progresses.
The team also identified hundreds of “hub genes” that function as central regulators, influencing many other genes and likely playing an important role in harmful changes in the brain. These hub genes could become valuable targets for earlier diagnosis and future treatment.
32. What is the key advantage of SIGNET compared to traditional methods?
A. It focuses on identifying moving genes.
B. It can analyze data from lots of brain samples.
C. It can reveal true cause-and-effect gene relationships.
D. It tells RNA sequencing from whole-genome sequencing.
33. What does the underlined word “exhaustive” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Detailed. B. Rough. C. Scientific. D. Official.
34. How did the researchers find true causal relationships between brain genes?
A. By using a traditional computer system. B. By employing DNA-encoded data.
C. By detecting six major brain cell types. D. By interpreting nerve cells signals.
35. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Principles of gene function. B. The severity of the brain diseases.
C. The role of gene changes. D. Potential application of the “hub genes”.
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. B 35. D

A lot of people tend to focus on how many hours of sleep they’re getting but ignore the quality of their sleep, which can be even more important than sleep time.
“____36____. They affect both the type of sleep and the quality of sleep that we’re getting. They are our sleep pressure and circadian (昼夜节律的) rhythms,” said Cunningham, an assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School.
Sleep pressure builds up the longer you’re awake and decreases while you’re asleep. ____37____. To get a good night’s worth of sleep, you just get into bed when you’ve built up a lot of sleep pressure.
Your circadian rhythm is your body’s internal clock. ____38____. Although the pattern that your body follows is guided by your brain, external factors, such as light, can affect your circadian rhythm.
For higher sleep quality, sleep pressure and your circadian rhythm should be working together. ____39____. This disturbance ultimately lowers your sleep quality.
“One way to improve sleep quality is to wake up at the same time every day, as it can be a little bit more impactful than going to bed at the same time every day. ____40____,” Cunningham said.
Once you have a general sleep schedule or routine, then your body will naturally start to seek out its optimal sleep time.
A. Don’t let the term fool you, though
B. Two distinct things in our body govern our sleep

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the 1990s, Ana Maria Cuenca’s father drove a taxi in Miami. One of his regular clients was a businessman who hired him as a personal driver during work trips. As they got to know each other better over time, their conversations naturally extended beyond work to personal matters like family and children. The businessman learned that Cuenca’s family was not well-off and had two children in school, so he always gave the father some extra cash at the end of each ride.
At that time, Cuenca was in her first year of college and was applying as a transfer student to Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, which she had wanted to attend since high school. But finances were tight for Cuenca and her family, and she wasn’t sure how she was going to cover the $ 50 required for the application fee.
“Fifty dollars was a lot of money for a college student back in 1997. And unfortunately, at that point, we really couldn’t afford the money. My wife and I were both from working-class backgrounds,” Cuenca’s father said.
During a routine drive, Cuenca’s father received a call from her. She told him she had decided to give up on the application, urging him not to worry about the money anymore. Cuenca’s father then drove silently, replaying his daughter’s words in his mind. The businessman noticed his distress (忧虑) and pressed him until he finally told the story. The businessman listened quietly, leaning back in his seat, his expression softening. “Your daughter sounds like someone who works hard for what she wants,” he said quietly. When the ride ended, the businessman gave him the extra cash as usual, but it was much more — a $ 50 bill.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Meanwhile, he said something that Cuenca’s father would never forget.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Cuenca used the businessman’s gift to submit her application that night.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Meanwhile, he said something that Cuenca’s father would never forget. “It is a gift for your daughter. Tell her that sometimes the world meets her halfway when she dares to walk toward her dream. Someday, when she’s able, I hope she’ll pay it forward. Let this be her first step to Georgetown.” Cuenca’s father drove home with the bill, a tangible warmth replacing the earlier worry. When he told Cuenca what had happened, tears welled up in her eyes. Her long-held dream was about to come true.
Cuenca used the businessman’s gift to submit her application that night. What followed were weeks of anxious waiting. Then, on the day when the thick acceptance letter from Georgetown arrived, Cuenca felt a surge of overwhelming gratitude toward the stranger whose generosity had made it possible. Thinking of the businessman’s gift and words, she made a promise to herself silently, “I’ll help someone the way he helped me.” The businessman’s gesture had ignited not just a dream, but also a lifelong commitment to paying kindness forward.

The school has grown as the local population has increased, so the canteen is always very busy throughout the lunch period. There's only one serving point, so most pupils have to wait a considerable time to be served. Now we've had a new food hall built, which will come into use next week. You may be wondering what will happen to the old canteen. We'll still have tables and chairs in there, and pupils can eat food from the food hall or lunch they've brought from home. Eventually we may use part of the canteen for stories, but first we'll see how many pupils go in there at lunch time. Okay, let's take a break. And then i'll talk more about our school.

C. It’s better to engage in some low-arousing activities
D. You’re concerned about the amount of sleep you’re getting
E. An irregular sleep schedule or sudden changes can disrupt your sleep
F. Forcing yourself to go to bed when you aren’t yet sleepy isn’t always a good idea
