Dear Peter,

Behind this is an ancient idea: living in harmony (和谐) with the seasons and listening to your body. This is the “life wisdom” that has been passed down over time. I hope you can come to China and see it for yourself one day.
Yours,
Lin Dan

These lessons will not take up main subjects’ time, but let students experience life.

When you walk in a forest, you may see fallen leaves and dry branches everywhere. Scientists call these things natural debris (残骸). It also includes dead trees and other parts of plants. Though many people think these things are useless waste, they are important for keeping ecosystems balanced.
Things from nature give back food to the soil. When they fall to the ground, small living things like insects break them down. They turn hard plant pieces into soft pieces and return food to the soil. This process is important for keeping the soil rich.
Natural debris provides homes and food for wildlife. From small insects to bigger animals, many living things depend on organic (有机的) materials that break down for food, homes, and places to have babies. This forms a good food chain that keeps many kinds of living things alive.
Also, natural debris can control water movement and help the ground hold more water. It works like a wall to reduce soil loss. Fallen leaves and branches slow down water on the land, so the ground can take in more water. By reducing soil loss, natural debris helps keep riverbanks and river beds in good condition.
However, human activities harm this balance. When people clear forests for farming or building cities, they take away important materials that form natural debris. This causes weaker nutrient (营养) cycling, poorer water control, and fewer living places for wildlife.
Natural debris is key in our life, so we should protect forests and reuse it. For example, we can collect fallen leaves to make nutrient-rich soil for plants. In this way, we can keep ecosystems healthy.
56. What can we know about natural debris?
A. It is useless waste in nature.
B. It plays a key role in the ecosystems.
C. It is dead plants and animals in the forest.
57. What helps natural debris turn into nutrients?
A. Small living things. B. Organic materials. C. Soil.
58. Why is natural debris good for riverbanks?
A. It helps reduce the soil loss.
B. It can slow down the water.
C. It provides food and homes for fish.
59. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. Wildlife loses homes because of cities.
B. Natural debris needs humans’ protection.
C. Human activities harm the balance of nature.
60. Which of the following best shows the structure of the text? (①= Paragraph 1)
A. B. C.

The Tangjiahe National Nature Reserve is in the northeast of Sichuan. It has attracted many visitors across China. Here, visitors have the chance 1 many kinds of wildlife, and sometimes even giant pandas.

Misunderstandings are common in daily life. For example, your classmate thinks you left out their message because you didn’t reply right away. However, you were just busy with your homework and exam review. Or just one of your jokes makes them sad. 1 Even in group projects, unclear tasks may make them think you don’t want to do your part. These small problems, if not solved in time, will harm your relationship.
Most misunderstandings come from poor communication or judging others too quickly. 2 We seldom have time to explain ourselves clearly. Sometimes we judge what others do without knowing the whole truth. For example, if you forget to return a borrowed notebook on time, your classmate may think you don’t care about their things. But they don’t know the notebook was left at home by accident. 3
It’s not hard to fix such misunderstandings, and the key is to communicate with care. If you find your classmate keeping away from you, don’t guess or be angry. 4 Explain what happened, not just say “sorry”. When your classmate talks, listen carefully, look at them and don’t cut in. Also, don’t think the worst of others — believe their mistakes are just accidents, not on purpose.
5 They are chances to make your friendship stronger. With open and kind communication, small fights can become warm connections, and our school life will be more pleasant.
A. Don’t be afraid of misunderstandings.
B. Students are always busy with studies.
C. Actually, you had no bad thoughts at all.
D. Some students are too shy to speak in public.
E. We often misunderstand each other in this way.
F. Find a time to talk face to face, not just send a message.

Should We Send Humans into Space?
In recent years, space exploration has made great progress around the world. Many countries, including China, are trying to explore the mysteries of space. China has successfully launched (发射) Chang’e lunar probes and Shenzhou crewed spacecraft, making important achievement s in space exploration.
Exploring space is never an easy task. There are many challenges. Humans going into space need enough air, food and protection from harmful energy. If an accident happens, people will be far away from their homes on Earth. Even so, humans have never stopped exploring space, and many astronauts have successfully traveled into space. With the development of space technology, there is a hot discussion: is it worth sending humans into space, or is sending uncrewed (无人驾驶的) spacecraft a better choice? Different people have different views, and we can take a closer look at both sides.
Some people hold the view that sending humans into space is necessary. First, human exploration can encourage people, especially the young, to explore the unknown. Seeing astronauts in space brings people excitement and pride. Second, humans can watch and think more carefully than machines. Astronauts can make decisions quickly according to unexpected situations and share their personal experiences, which are more lively and believable than data (数据) from uncrewed spacecraft. What’s more, if humans want to live on other planets in the future, we need to let astronauts get used to space travel and get experience for harder tasks.
However, other people think that sending uncrewed spacecraft is a wiser choice. They believe that human life is the most important, and keeping humans alive in space requires a lot of money and careful protection. Unlike humans, uncrewed spacecraft do not need food, air or special protection, and they are much safer for risky space tasks. What’s more, uncrewed spacecraft have successfully completed many space tasks. They can travel far into space and stand terrible environments that humans cannot. Some people also think that the data collected by uncrewed spacecraft is correct enough, so we don’t need to risk human lives.

Emily’s life was simple but full of small joys. In her free time, she loved watching the bees in the small garden near her home. All summer, the bees flew from roses to sunflowers, working together. They never stopped flying and worked together. One day, Emily asked her mom, “Why do the bees always stay so close?” Mom smiled and said, “Wait for winter, and you may find the reason why they stay so close to each other.”
When winter came, the temperature dropped to -18℃. Snow covered the garden. She had heard that a single bee couldn’t live more than 2 hours at 5℃, so she felt worried and decided to check the hive (蜂箱). But then she saw something interesting: the bees crowded into a ball. From time to time, they moved slowly, letting the outer bees change places to get warm. In this way, no bee would be left in the cold for too long.
Weeks passed, and the cold never stopped. Emily checked the hive every day. Not once did the bee group break apart. They stayed together, sharing their body heat. No matter how hard the winter was, they never gave up on each other.
At last, spring came. The bees flew out happily. Emily ran to tell her mom, “The bees are alive! Why?” Mom said, “Teamwork. Alone, they’ll die from the cold in winter. Together, they’re strong. That’s true for all living things — teamwork is our greatest power.”
From then on, whenever Emily faced a hard time, she thought of the bees. She knew working with others would help her get through it.
