Dear Tom,
My favorite sport is basketball. It’s exciting and can make me strong both in body and mind. Also, it teaches me how to work with others in a team.
I play basketball three times a week after school. I usually play it with my classmates on the school playground. Sometimes we have small matches, which are really fun. Playing basketball makes my after-school life colorful and relaxed.
Hope my answers can help you with your survey.
Yours,
Li Hua

We took to the street to talk with people of different ages and ask: What does China mean to them? Let's find out what some of them have to say.
I am a student at Peking University. My study interest is about using computer technology to make new medicines. China's development in computer science is fast, and there are many great research firms here. With these experiences, I feel more confident about my future.
Huang Tao, 20, China
During my trip, I visited many of China's beautiful places. The most encouraging one was Tsinghua University. In the school, I could feel the energy and spirit of the students. It was encouraging to see them studying to build a better future. China is full of energy. Not only in education but also in culture, economy, science and technology, sports and even travel.
Li Muyan, 14, China
I came to Shanghai because of a job opportunity. And in my opinion, China develops so fast because the Chinese people are actually some of the most hard-working people in the world. To know more about the country, I decided to learn Chinese and now I'm deeply attracted by beautiful Chinese culture! And gradually I realize that even though we come from different countries and have different skin colors, we can still share our feelings with each other and have the same passion for our life.
Cyrus Janssen, 45, America
China is a nice place with friendly people. Everywhere I go, I meet kind and good people. To me, China is wonderful because Chinese people respect others from around the world. They accept us and we can work and study together well with them. China's friendliness to people from other countries is truly special.
Mercy Angel Yorcoe, 32, Liberia
As a person from Ecuador, I have lived in China for eight years, mostly in Shanghai, and I've recently moved to Beijing. What surprises me most about China is how full of life it is. Everything changes fast, especially in science and technology. I also love how safe it feels here. I'm happy to live here and be part of it.

Oliver Smith, a 13-year-old boy from the US, found hope in a special jacket. Smith had a serious illness. To cheer him up, his friends brought him books and toys, but those didn't work. His dad saw some patches (徽章) in his room and thought they could help. His parents asked his friends for more patches and put some of them onto a jacket for his hospital visits. It worked! Smith was very happy. So he started the Oliver Patch Project to help more children.
The project gives free jackets with patches to children with cancer. Now, more than 1,600 children have got one. Each patch has a special meaning for their treatment. For example, a monkey is for starting treatment, an eagle for losing hair, and a bear for fever.
These symbols have helped children stay happy. Ellora Brown, a 7-year-old girl who got better from a kind of cancer, loves her patches. "The patches are special to me because they helped my journey through cancer," she said. Another 5-year-old boy Nick White got his elephant patch for taking medicine without crying for a whole month. If your mind is teaching you to see very thin women as the "perfect" example of fitness, your mind can greatly change how you see beauty. This change happens much faster than people thought before. A study by British and Swiss scientists found this.
The scientists wanted to find out how different images of models affect people's ideas about the "ideal" (理想的) female body. They found 80 volunteer women who had never seen such images before. They went to Nicaragua's Mosquito Coast, where villagers have never watched TV or movies. They visited the villages and asked them to describe their ideal body shape. Then, half of the volunteers saw 72 photos of plus-size (larger) models, and the other half saw 72 photos of thin models.
The whole test took about 15 minutes. After that, the scientists asked the villagers to describe their ideal body shape again. Those who saw plus-size models changed their ideal female body to match that shape, while those who saw thin models also changed their ideal to fit what they had seen.
The study didn't check how long these changes last. We don't know if the 15-minute influence might disappear in one day. But in places where people see all kinds of body images every day, this doesn't matter - their beauty standards are always changing. The key lesson from the study is: all kinds of images can change our beauty standards in a very short time (as fast as baking a batch of cookies).
11. What can affect people's beauty standards?
A. Pictures of models. B. Behavior of friends.
C. Findings of scientists. D. Information of villagers.
12. Why did scientists choose Nicaragua's Mosquito Coast for the study?
A. Many TV shows were made there.
B. It is easy to find many volunteers there.
C. The study was supported by the village there.
D. People there have never seen body pictures of models before.
13. Which is the correct order of volunteers' actions in the test?
① seeing 72 photos
② changing their views
③ describing their ideal
A. ①②③ B. ①③② C. ③①② D. ②③①
14. What happened to the volunteers after the test?
A. They all like thin models. B. Their opinions remained the same.
C. They forgot their ideal body shape. D. Their beauty standards were influenced.
15. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce a study. B. To describe ideal body shapes.
C. To offer health suggestions. D. To compare different models.

Imagine you're at school with lots of craft materials but have no idea what artwork to make. So you ask a friendly AI bot called Mundo for help. It gives suggestions and tells you how to make your own work step by step.
Mundo is a new AI tool for kids aged 13 and older. It uses the same AI model as ChatGPT. Such AI chatbots are able to communicate with people anytime and anywhere. Besides, chatbots can help with their studies. People can ask them to do all kinds of things, like writing passages or computer code.
But many teachers are concerned about the use of AI chatbots. Students might use this new technology to cheat on their homework (as an easy way to finish homework).
Cheating isn't the only problem with ChatGPT. The tool also collects and saves users' personal information and chat history, which may put young people's private information in danger.
ChatGPT and similar AI tools have another big problem: they often make mistakes. Professor Casey Fiesler says, "They give wrong information." She made many TikTok videos about ChatGPT's problems. In one video, she asked ChatGPT about a math problem and purposely gave the wrong answer. She hoped the bot would help her find the mistake, but it told her she was right.
AI chatbots even make up false information. For example, ChatGPT once said, "Whales are the largest fish in the sea." But whales aren't fish, and they're mammals (哺乳动物) instead.
These mistakes happen because chatbots don't work like Google Search. Instead, they use a type of AI called a large language model. This AI learns from the Internet and books to guess the next words in a sentence. It learns how people use language, so it can make creative answers - but it also makes mistakes easily.
16. What is Mundo according to the passage?
A. A math teacher. B. A friendly AI bot.
C. A type of craft materials. D. A kind of large language models.
17. What does the underlined word "concerned" mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Happy B. sad C. angry D. worried
18. What risk does ChatGPT bring to young people?
A. It teaches them to write. B. It may hurt their privacy.
C. It may make them upset. D. It encourages them to think.
19. Why do AI chatbots like ChatGPT easily make mistakes?
A. They don't have enough information. B. They use a model to guess next words.
C. They can only learn from TikTok videos. D. They are not allowed to use Google Search.
20. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Mundo: A Safe AI Tool B. AI: A Creative Helper for Students
C. ChatGPT: Better than Google Search D. AI Chatbots: Advantages and Problems

How are American families different from Chinese ones?
In some ways American families are very different from Chinese ones, and in other ways they are 36 same. For example, American families enjoy family dinners. They support and love each other just as Chinese families do. The differences come from culture, however. Many Chinese students are surprised to learn that American teenagers 37 (allow) to make many decisions on their own, and the parents want their 38 (child) to leave home at eighteen.
In most American families, 39 (make) their own choices is encouraged at a young age. They start with small choices and 40 (gradual) larger ones until they graduate from high school. That is when they face the 41 (big) decision of their lives: what to do next. Parents and family will help with the choice, but the children 42 (them) make the final decision.
43 Americans get older, they seldom move back into family homes. Instead, they prefer 44 (have) their own lives for as long as possible. It is important to remember that these are 45 (culture) differences, and that Americans see this as part of the culture.
第三部分 写作(满分35分)
第一节 信息摘录(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,然后在文后表格内完成内容摘要,每空不超过3个词,并将答案写在答题卡的相应位置。
Overfishing
Our oceans are in big trouble and overfishing is a major reason. In the 1980s, the seas around Nova Scotia and Newfoundland were full of sea animals. However, by 1992 this richness was gone - North American cod (鳕鱼) numbers dropped to just 1% of their past numbers.
Overfishing has many negative effects. Firstly, it hurts ocean life. For example, large fishes are lack of food, so their populations are decreasing. Besides, it causes a lot of people to lose their jobs because there are no more fish to catch.
What are the reasons behind overfishing? The first is the increasing fish need for meals, which makes fishing companies try to catch as many fish as possible to make money. What's more, there are no powerful rules to punish overfishing.
What can we do? First, we need to set real rules for fishing. Second, we need to reduce ocean pollution, so the fish can grow once again. Third, people all over the world, everyone should join hands to protect the oceans.
