You might not think that an AI capable of making music would stimulate your emotion, but others think differently, particularly those who gathered at Mexico City's Symphony Hall in 2019 for Schubert's Unfinished Symphony, which I finished using melodies generated by an AI.
As the orchestra (管弦乐团) finished Schubert's original work and began the music the AI and I had written, I could feel the crowd's energy shift from astonishment to indignation and fear. They seemed afraid that an AI might be able to make emotional symphonic music. You can see their point: an AI that makes emotional music could affect the emotional lives of thousands or even millions of people in a small, but profound way, just like a human musician does.
Positive and negative, people reacted very strongly to AI's symphonic debut (首秀).Even though most people don't believe that AI can create something enjoyable, they, at least partly, did enjoy the Unfinished Symphony.
Enjoyment in music implies that there's something in the music that the listener connects to, a perception of shared emotion. But, in the case of AI music, an emotion shared with who? AI, as of yet, has no emotions. So what is the meaning of music made without an emotional composer? The unsatisfying answer is that music has no objective meaning.A composer can decide how a piece of music sounds, but it's the listener that decides what it means.
No matter how it's created, music doesn't exist in a vacuum (真空) to the listener. The meaning we assign to music depends on its context—how the piece connects to other elements in our lives.Without context, music is like the results of a game whose rules have been lost. The context for music is part of who you are.The music is emotional to you because you have the context to appreciate it.As it continues to evolve, AI music will develop its own context.Certainly, it'll be different from humanmade music. It'll mix existing genres to create new ones; it'll combine instruments that we wouldn't think of combining. Its rules will be different.
I'm now always asked the same question: “Who put the emotion in that music: you, the composer, or the AI?” But that's not the question they really want to ask, though. There's a deeper question that most people are too afraid to ask right now: “Are my emotions so simple that they can be maneuvered by a machine?”
In my experience, this could be possible one day.If a modestly capable music AI in 2019 could stir up emotions of an audience, maybe AI can have a more powerful effect on our emotional lives than we'd like to admit.

I have to say it is rather uncommon for males of my age to be classical music enthusiasts.I was not born into a musical family and neither of my parents learned classical music. There wasn't much music in my home either. So, how did it all start?
The story dates back to the time when I was in kindergarten, and classical music CDs were offered to parents.Thinking that it wouldn't be a bad idea to get me some music to listen to, my parents ordered them without any ambition of my developing an interest in classical music.Without knowing who Bach, Vivaldi and Chopin were or what to expect, I just played the CDs one after one and grew increasingly fond of them.
What took place meanwhile was my piano studies, which again exposed me to classical music. But I have to admit the beginner pieces sounded rather uninspired and dull to me.Thanks to YouTube, I was able to explore more than what my first piano teacher offered—from piano to orchestral music, from Bach to Scriabin.Very often, I didn't practise the pieces my teacher assigned, but the pieces I truly loved! It's also through the Internet that I discovered one of my piano idols later, Grigory Sokolov.Later on, I became interested in not only the music itself, but also composers and music history.
I still remember a 28day outdoor programme in Australia organised by my high school. We weren't allowed to use our mobile phones, and there wasn't any piano either. What I could only do was to repeatedly recall Chopin's Preludes, Op.28 when walking up the hills.I felt peaceful as usual, but even happier with growing enthusiasm for music.
To me, classical music explores the deepest emotions of humanity but can be so humorous as well. The magic of it lies in its ability to cast light on aspects of human conditions and, at the same time, to go beyond the reality.

In the last few decades, scientists have made enormous breakthroughs in understanding how our brains work by monitoring them in real time with fMRI and PET scanners. When people are hooked up to these machines, tasks, such as reading or doing maths problems, each have corresponding areas of the brain where activities can be observed. But when researchers got the participants to listen to music, they saw fireworks. Some areas of their brains were lighting up at once, as they processed the sound, took it apart to understand elements like melody and rhythm, and then put it all back together into combined musical experience.
Yet when scientists turned from observing the brains of music listeners to those of musicians, the little backyard fireworks became a massive celebration. It turns out that playing music is similar to a fullbody workout.Playing a musical instrument engages practically every area of the brain at once, especially the visual, auditory, and motor cortices (大脑皮层).
The most obvious difference between listening to music and playing it is that the latter requires fine motor skills, which are controlled in both hemispheres (半球) of the brain. It also combines the linguistic and mathematical accuracy, in which the left hemisphere is more involved, with the novel and creative content that the right excels in.
Because making music also involves crafting and understanding its emotional content and message, musicians often have higher levels of executive function. And, indeed, musicians exhibit enhanced memory functions, creating, storing, and retrieving memories more quickly and efficiently.Studies have found that's because musicians use their highly connected brains to attach each memory to multiple labels, such as a conceptual label, an emotional label, an audio label, and a contextual label, like a good Internet search engine.
The recent research about the mental benefits of playing music has advanced our understanding of mental function, revealing the inner rhythms and complex interplay that make up the amazing orchestra of our brain.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五(共5小题,每小题2.5分,共12.5分)
Watching a movie can be a magical experience, but do you know that the music in the films we watch has always been an important part of creating that magical experience? 1( )
The first commercial film with sound came out in 1927.2( ) Even back in the early days of silent films, most movie theatres hired a musician or a group of musicians to provide music, mostly to drown out the sound of the film projectors (放映机) and people talking.
As soundonfilm technology developed, composers were hired to create original music for films.Like music written for an opera, film music serves to advance the story and the action.3( ) In the same way, a film composer needs to support the screenplay's storyline. The music also needs to reflect the screenplay's mood, which includes everything from the action on the screen to sound effects of dialogue.
Music has a language of its own.The right piece of music can improve and sometimes even change a viewer's ideas of what is taking place on screen. Most of the time, music is used to stress the action on screen, improve the mood of a scene, foreshadow the action that is about to take place or even show the emotion of a character.4( ) But in many instances the emotional power of the visuals would not be as great were it not for the music.
5( ) Ask yourself, “How would this scene feel if the music were different? Is the composer trying to tell me how I should feel? Or is he or she merely pushing me in an emotional direction?”
A.So, how is the film music created?
B.Without it, it would be hard to imagine the scene.
C.An opera composer must follow the text of the opera.
D.Usually, composers and filmmakers don't want to overshadow a film.
E.So the next time you watch a movie, pay close attention to the music.
F.The music in a film makes you cheer for the hero and cry about the drama.
G.Since then, music has been powerfully linked to the moviewatching experience.

A production integrating traditional Chinese opera with Western classical music took place in London.
The performance with the name A Hero's Life tells of the story of Cai Lun, 1 man in China's Eastern Han Dynasty credited with the invention of paper. It was produced by a famous Chinese theatrical figure Chen Xinyi, who has created the performance style 2 (know) as “symphony poetry drama”.
The soundtrack (配乐), performed by the Fidelio Orchestra, 3 (compose) by Richard Strauss in the 19th century, in a style called a tone poem. It's a single continuous movement made up of sequences similar 4 chapters, as in a symphony.
“Cai Lun is a hero, 5 invention changed civilization and advanced cultural progress. But surprisingly, he also experienced misfortune, which stimulated my sympathy—he is a super dramatic character,” Chen adds.“6 (combine) a story with music written hundreds of years ago and thousands of kilometres apart seems unlikely, but the instant I heard A Hero's Life, the pairing came together.”
Linking Chinese theatre and Western music is a practice Chen has kept exploring for two decades, eight of her symphony poetry dramas performed 7 (previous), but this was her first performance in England.
“England is William Shakespeare's home. There's a 8 (connect) between him and the great playwright Tang Xianzu, who emerged in China at the same time,” she explains.“Then Europe saw the rise of symphonic music at the same time as China saw the rise of Peking Opera. So I love to bring together these two great performance styles and London is 9 I particularly desired 10 (do) it.”
