A
Esther Kimani, a 29yearold pioneer in agritech, is changing the lives of smallholder farmers across Africa. As the founder of Farmer Lifeline Technologies (FLT), she has applied artificial intelligence (AI) to fight against crop pests (害虫) and diseases, significantly reducing losses for rural farmers.
Kimani's journey began in a small Kenyan village on the Aberdare Mountains.Witnessing firsthand the severe impact of pests and diseases on their crops—and consequently, their income—she understood early how agricultural losses could mean unmet basic needs like school fees and healthcare.Despite these challenges, Kimani became the first girl from her village to attend university, studying computer science. It was there that she recognised the potential of technology to solve rural farmers' struggles, and that's how FLT was born.
In Kenya alone,7.5 million smallholder farmers lose up to 50% of their yield (产量) to pests and diseases annually—losses that could feed millions.Traditional solutions like hiring agricultural consultants or using drones (无人机) are prohibitively expensive. To solve this critical issue, she developed an AIpowered camera, which is set up on farms at no upfront cost.It scans crops continuously and warns farmers through Short Message Service (SMS) for $3 per month when pests or diseases are detected.
A key focus for Kimani is supporting women farmers, who make up 43% of the agricultural labour force in developing nations, but who often lack access to technology.“Men in rural communities tend to have smartphones, while women rely on basic feature phones,” she notes.“Through SMS, we ensure women aren't left behind.”
Kimani's innovation has already impacted thousands of farmers, 78% of whom have reported a yield increase of over 36%.Her team aims to reach 200 thousand farms across the country within five years. For Kimani, success in 2030 means seeing 200 thousand smallholder farmers living with dignity—affording education, healthcare, and financial stability through improved yields.Kimani is not just building a company; she's reshaping the future of African agriculture.

The Internet is a busy place, with billions of interactions, millions of content pieces, and large numbers of social media accounts owned by people. But in recent years, the socalled “Dead Internet Theory” has gained popularity. The theory suggests that most activity online is generated by bots and AI agents, not by humans.
Thanks to generative AI, plenty of AIgenerated models and influencers now often show up online.AIgenerated content has changed the dynamics of the Internet, making it cheaper than ever to become a content creator. It makes sense, especially from a creator's perspective. If you spend a few hours on a video for your social pages, you expect to get likes, follows, and subscriptions. However, if you can produce three videos in the same amount of time with AI assistance, you're increasing your chances of creating those things within the same period.
However, AI could lead to an Internet that feels dead due to a lack of obvious original content and articles that lack a human touch—regardless of viewpoints, experience or humour.Fortunately, one glimmer of hope here is that some online giants have been taking action to reduce bot use, or so they say.Such measures are partly due to advertisers becoming more understanding regarding what makes up real human views versus botgenerated ones. So, no, the Internet is not dead.At least not yet.
Dead Internet Theory may be hyperbole (夸张), but it raises two important points.First, the Internet is undoubtedly moving in this direction.Second, and more significantly, the theory causes a broader unease about the emotional and social dynamics online.Social media is now the primary news source for many users around the world. Therefore, there's potential for AI agents to promote false information and interact with each other to boost engagement, which does leave room for concern.
So we do have to accept that humans share online spaces with bots and AI agents. As information spreads faster than ever across digital platforms, caution is advised: Never assume it's actually a human you're interacting with on the other side of your screen.

Every year at this harvest time, you are likely to read articles about the promise that the average family can save money by growing their own fruit and vegetables.1( )
So can your average home gardener really compete on price against the economies of scale of industrial agriculture? 2( ) Say you want to start with potatoes in a household container. In the UK, these cost around £75.Given potatoes in my supermarket are £0.90 per kilogram, you would have to produce at least 83 kg to break even.Assuming you get similar output as the professionals, a 60×60 cm container would only give you around 2 to 3 kg per year.So at best, you would only get your money back after around 27 years.
3( ) Well, given that everything goes well, you will still need to start by buying seed potatoes. In my garden centre these don't come cheap. For easytotransport produce with long shelf lives, like potatoes, carrots and onions, it really is almost impossible to get the maths to work in your favour on a domestic scale, as efficiencies resulting from agricultural mechanisation make these so inexpensive to buy.
However, when it comes to more delicate offerings, the opposite is often true. The plants harvested only by hand can be costly to buy.4( ) Many herbs like mint, dill and fennel are so tough that much of the gardening advice is how to prevent them from taking over your pot. This is also true for pricey salad crops like wild rocket, or arugula, which live a secret double life as a common garden weed.5( )
A.Let's look at the numbers.
B.So why bother to grow your own plants?
C.These turn out to be the exception to the general economic reality.
D.But the writers never really reference how they arrived at the conclusion.
E.What if you abandon the container and just grow some potatoes in garden soil?
F.The three most expensive items in my supermarket happen to be the easiest to grow.
G.We should consider the cost of the potatoes, the growing medium, fertiliser, and water.
故选A。
