Every year during Halloween, it's likely that homes around the neighbourhood will put up some spider webs as their spooky (恐怖的) decorations. But people were asked to stop using fake spider webs last year because they posed a huge danger to natural wildlife.
The fake webbing is considered a danger to birds, bats and other small animals as they are often attracted to the decorations and get caught, resulting in injuries or sometimes even death. What's more, when blown around by the wind, fake Halloween spider webs often end up in public spaces like parks and beaches, attracting wildlife.Since they are not biodegradable (可生物降解的), they can linger for months or even years, posing a continuous threat to the environment and animals.
Last year, government authorities actively used social media to warn about the dangers posed by popular Halloween decorations. One post advised: “Please avoid using fake spider webs when decorating your home. They can be very harmful to wildlife, especially birds, which often mistake spider silk for building their nests and cannot distinguish between real and synthetic webbing. This can lead to birds and their young becoming entangled, along with bats, insects and other wildlife.”
The Paws & Recover Facebook group posted a reminder about the dangers of synthetic webbing, generating over 700 comments from people expressing how much they loathe the decoration due to the great harm it causes to precious wildlife.
Wildlife experts have urged people to use larger, safer decorations that don't endanger animals.Compassionate individuals have also shared advice online.“Here I am, ready to spoil your Halloween decorating fun! PLEASE DO NOT USE FAKE SPIDER WEBS OUTSIDE,” a woman cautioned, sharing her photos.Another suggested, “If you're looking for decorating ideas, consider reusing or repurposing items you already own.”

Every November, as Thanksgiving Day approaches, one memory comes to my mind.At my big Turkish family's gettogethers, baklava (果仁蜜饼) is the norm at the dessert table. There's rolled baklava, nutfilled baklava and chocolatedipped baklava.
One year, though, back when I was in high school, my cousin Johnny decided to change things up a bit.He showed up at my parents' house for Thanksgiving with two items that had never been served before—apple pie and a can of cream.
Those two items caused one of the biggest arguments.I distinctly remember my mum and aunts whispering in the kitchen.
“Apple pie?” one of my aunts said.“What should I do with this?”
I can still recall my mum's puzzled expression at it all.If there's one thing in this world my mum distrusts, it's fruitfilled desserts, a nono in our food culture.“Why would you bake fruits into a dessert when you can eat them fresh?” she often says.
The cream only made things worse. My mum didn't want to hurt Johnny's feelings. In a true act of love, she put the pie out on the dining room table, accompanied by the cream. It went mostly untouched.
Nowadays, things are different. We actually have pie at Thanksgiving—my mum regularly makes pie (the fear of fruitfilled sweets continues, but desserts topped with fruits or nuts have been given the okay). We still laugh about the drama caused by Johnny's apple pie.I'll never forget it.It wasn't just about the pie for me.Growing up, I sometimes felt like an outsider because of my culture. That Thanksgiving, though, was one of the first times I realised that my family's oddness was actually a good thing. It's what made us.
What about you? Which Thanksgiving sticks out as your most memorable one?

Seeing Happiness Differently
Since its official beginning in 2013, the International Day of Happiness has been observed for more than 10 years. It falls on March 20 every year.1( ) But what exactly is happiness, and how can one achieve it?
Experts in various fields hold different views on what happiness means and the factors that influence it.
Sonja Lyubomirsky is a researcher in the field of positive psychology.2( ) According to her, happiness can be described as “the experience of joy, content(满足) or positive wellbeing, combined with a sense that one's life is good, meaningful and worthwhile.”
People's levels of subjective happiness are influenced by both internal factors, such as personality and outlook, and external factors, such as the environment in which they live, according to the author of the book Culture and Psychology.3( ) These include their natural personality traits(特性), the quality of their relationships with others, the society they are a part of, and their ability to meet their basic needs.
More than that, experts in medical fields found that genes might influence happiness. In an article published in Iran J Public Health, three researchers show how twin studies have suggested that genetic factors count for 35—50 per cent of happiness. The study also mentioned two genes that may have an effect on happiness, which may help clarify the genetic base of happiness in the future.
From the aspect of economics, Tejvan Pettinger, an independent economics researcher, said that the factors affecting happiness can include income, quality of work, quality of consumption, leisure, the welfare of family members and the environment.4( ) He believes that at low levels of income, increasing income is generally considered to increase happiness as it allows a person to buy essential goods and services such as food, shelter, health care and education. However, after certain income levels, rising income contributes little to overall happiness.
5( ) So people define it differently and pursue it in a variety of ways. It's a life lesson worth our whole lifetime to explore.
A.This special day serves to remind people of the significance of happiness.
B.She provides a clear description of happiness.
C.Among them, income is a crucial factor.
D.Several important factors contribute to a person's happiness.
E.What is their main source of income?
F.Career success may not be a guarantee of happiness.
G.The truth is that happiness itself is different for everyone.
