Life can feel terribly unfair. And yet for some people, when life hands them the worst possible circumstances, they are at their absolute best.
Jessie Joy Rees is just such a person. The blondehaired, Californian kid with the big personality as fun as a day at the beach became the voice of courage for kids with cancer.Athletic and energetic, Jessie had her whole world in front of her, until she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour (肿瘤) in 2011.Doctors estimated that she had just a 1% chance of survival and less than a year to live. With no other treatment options, her family entered Jessie for a clinical trial. For weeks she underwent 30 rounds of radiotherapy.Amazingly, the pain and uncertainty never lessened her shine, and Jessie always remained positive throughout it all.
Three weeks into her treatment, Jessie asked an uncharacteristically mature question for such a young girl.Looking out at the other children who were also going through cancer treatment, she asked her parents: “How can we help them?” Jessie's heart was bigger than any tumour.“She was determined to make other cancer kids happy,” her father Erik tenderly remembers.“How could we not help?”
Though 12yearold Jessie had a slight chance of beating cancer, she resolved to make the most of her time. The morning after her diagnosis, Jessie was at the kitchen table packing bags of toys for other cancer patients. The packages became hospitalsafe plastic jars stuffed with toys, crafts and activities to surprise children while they are in the hospital for treatment.JoyJars, named after Jessie's middle name, contain a little bit of fun during ordinary days, but mostly they contain a little bit of Jessie's positive attitude that fills the room every time one is opened.
Jessie Joy Rees, a special soul who could radiate so much good in so short a time, passed away less than a year after her diagnosis. But her parents keep the joy alive.More than 400,000 JoyJars have been delivered to children undergoing cancer treatment in all 50 states and over 50 countries, with each stamped with her life philosophy:“Never Ever Give Up”.
No matter how long or short our lives turn out to be, there is always room for a little joy.

Looking at Brandon Miles May for the first time, you'd probably mistake him for a teenager, but he is 35 years old. We've seen such shocking differences between age and appearance before, but it is usually due to some rare hormonal disorder. In Brandon's case, he never mentioned such a condition in any of his videos, but owes his unbelievably youthful looks to his antiaging practice, which includes a balanced diet, minimal sun exposure, and at least eight hours of sleep per night.
“When I go to the airport, security ask me how old I am, and they do a double take,” Brandon said in one of his videos.“The age people think I am ranges—usually 15, 16, or 18 to 19.I've never had any work done. What I do is pretty simple but effective.”
At age 15, Brandon started avoiding direct sunlight and making changes to his diet, such as including more plantbased foods and green tea, and by age 19 he had already cut out sugars, grains, and carbohydrates. He has also never had a drop of alcohol and has never smoked, because he knows the effects that such bad habits have on health.
“I've been staying out of sunlight my whole life,” he added.“I wear a hoodie (连帽衫) to block the sun and use physical coverings on the backs of my hands.I also don't go heavy on exercise.Too much exercise can put stress on the body—it can age the body.I keep my exercise moderate and gentle—a walk, yoga, and some strength training.”
Brandon says that he looks better than he did ten years ago, but more importantly, he feels a lot better, too.At the end of the day, youthful looks are nice, but what good are they if you feel terrible? Although he agrees that some people may find his lifestyle choices a bit strange, the 35yearold man claims they are worth it for his antiaging efforts.

Dancing lowers the depression associated with Parkinson's disease, and the benefits can be seen in multiple ways, a new study shows.
“It was very cool to see dance had a positive effect on the mood circuits in the brain, which we could see in the imaging from MRI brain scans (扫描),” says Joseph DeSouza, author of the study.“These improvements were also reported by the participants via survey. Our study is the first to demonstrate these benefits across these two detection methods.”
The study followed 23 participants with Parkinson's disease from the Sharing Dance Parkinson's programme at Canada's National Ballet School, along with family members or caregivers.Participants took weekly dance classes for 8 months, progressing from simple leg and foot work to more complex movements like waltzes and more. The research team focused on the subcallosal cingulate gyrus (SCG), a brain region linked to depression. They measured mood and depression before and after each class using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) (老年抑郁量表) and conducted regular MRI scans.
The researchers found that after each dance class, reported depression rates dropped, and the effect was increasing from class to class, with significant improvements after 8 months.“We showed that SCG's BOLD (bloodoxygenleveldependent) signal decreases while dancing, which means the SCG was not functioning as fast as it would if you had depression,” says DeSouza.“Parkinson's disease is often accompanied by depression long before motor symptoms (症状) appear.”
Dance is thought to have a double benefit, with music activating the brain's reward centres, and the movement acting on sensory and motor circuits. After 14 years of dancing with participants, DeSouza says that while dancing is not a treatment for Parkinson's disease by itself, the benefits are clear.“We're not trying to cure it with dance,” he says.“What we're trying to do is to have people live a better quality of life. This goes for both the patients and their families that take care of them.”

A.By referring to previous studies.
B.By making prepost comparisons.

How to Finally Stick with a Fitness Habit
Have you committed to a new habit—exercising, let's say—but keep falling off the wagon? Do you give up when the going gets tough? You may have low selfefficacy (自我效能感).1( ).Here are some of the ways that psychologists say we can build selfefficacy.
Congratulate yourself for small wins
Past successes are fuel for future success. This applies to tiny things like habits: 2( ).It also applies to bigger projects. When you did a beginner running programme and “graduated” by running a 5K race, that's huge. You learned that you can run farther than you ever thought you could. You learned what that finishline glow of accomplishment really feels like.3( ).
Watch people doing the thing you want to do
The secondbest thing to practise selfefficacy is to indirectly experience others' success. For some people, looking up to a worldclass athlete can inspire them in the gym.4( ).When your buddy hits a new deadlift record, you'll cheer for them, right? Even though you weren't the person walking up to the bar, you've still experienced a taste of the whole rollercoaster of emotions—from being nervous at the attempt to celebrating the success.
5( )
When you're trying to stay on a path, it helps to know where that path leads. What will it look like to make it to your goal? Try to imagine scenarios where you're trying to do the thing and you momentarily can't.It will help to think them through ahead of time and plan out how you will handle them. Then, when the time comes, you won't hesitate to execute your plan.
A.Set realistic goals
B.Visualize success (and failure)
C.Don't skip the gym on the first day, or it's harder to start the habit later
D.But don't worry: Selfefficacy is something that you can build with practice
E.If you managed to make it to the gym once, it's a lot easier to show up on day two
F.And you can harness (利用) all of that, all over again, when you start working on a new goal
G.For others, it can be helpful to look at somebody who is closer to you in skill level or experience
