Learning from Nature
Nature is an amazing teacher that offers endless inspiration. We can learn delicate structures for architecture from natural shapes, gain creative ideas from animals, and understand the true meaning of struggle from butterfly pupas. Meanwhile, it teaches us to live in harmony and develop a strong will.
To benefit from nature, we are supposed to observe it carefully and keep a journal of our reflections. Only by getting close to nature can we truly master its wisdom.
Let’s return to nature and apply its lessons to our life.

One possible version:
I pushed open the front door, Mimi still shaking in my arms. Mom was standing in the hallway. Instead of the anger I’d feared, she smiled and walked toward me. “I knew you couldn’t leave it behind,” she said, patting Mimi’s head gently. “Your willingness to care for the weak makes me proud.” Dad soon appeared with a small box lined with soft cloth. “This will be its little home from now on,” he said with a grin. Mimi seemed to understand, letting out a soft meow and rubbing Mom’s palm.
A week later, Mimi’s leg was much better. It had fully adapted to life at home, chasing sunbeams around the room and curling up beside my desk while I did my homework. Mom often said, “Caring for a life is never a bother—it’s a responsibility from the heart.” Watching Mimi hopping around happily, I suddenly realized: kindness isn’t about grand gestures. It’s the small courage to lend a hand when someone is in need. That courage not only warmed Mimi’s life but also taught me to cherish every living creature around me.

Text 1
W: It’s freezing outside! It’s colder than I thought.
M: Yeah! Although it is sunny now, it snowed heavily and the wind blew hard last night.
Text 2
M: Hey, Jessica, I need to improve my English.
W: What needs improvement, Ben? Your day-to-day communication skills are great with a good accent.
M: Thanks, but my business English could be better.
Text 3
W: Have you signed up for the voluntary activity this weekend?
M: Yes, the snowstorm caused a lot of damage to streets and parks. We’ll remove garbage and plant new trees.
Text 4
M: It’s no use. We’ve been circling for 15 minutes, looking for a parking space. It’s 7:25 pm now. The film will start in five minutes.
W: I know. Look! There’s one! Quick, grab it. We can still make it before the film starts.
Text 5
W: Honey, have you seen Emily?
M: She finished her homework and went out with her friends to go shopping.
W: Oh, no. She had a headache when she got up this morning.
Text 6
W: Could I clear these plates?
M: Sure, we’re all done. Please get the rest of that in a bag and we’ll take it away later.
W: No problem. And these are drinks for you.
M: Thanks. Do you accept personal checks?
W: Sorry, I’m afraid we don’t. We do accept credit cards, but only Master Card.
M: I only have a Discover Card. And I don’t have any cash on me. Is there a bank where I can draw some money nearby?
W: There’s one about three blocks away, but you’ll need to leave something with us.
M: OK!
Text 7
M: Hey, Lila. What are you doing here?
W: Hi, Max. I’m painting a picture of students having fun on the playground. Some students are playing board games; some are talking under the trees; and the others are playing football.
M: Oh, I see myself with the chess piece in hand. Anyway, the colors look fantastic.
W: Thanks! I try to use bright colors to show how lively everyone is. The picture is almost done.
M: You really captured the scene well. But you forgot one thing. You should have added yourself to this picture.
W: Oh, you’re right.
Text 8
W: Jack, summer vacation is coming. Any plans?
M: I plan to visit the Alps.
W: Are they a mountain range in Europe?
M: Yes. I’m going to fly from Beijing to Paris, and then drive straight down to the Alps as soon as I get there.
W: So, the Alps are in France?
M: They are, but they also go across other European countries. I will spend my first two nights in France, and then head into Switzerland.
W: Cool! What’s the next?
M: I’ll spend two nights in Bern, the Swiss capital, and one night in Fussen, Germany. After that, I’ll go to Austria, where I’ve booked a three-night stay.
W: And all those countries are in the Alps?
M: Yes, and northern Italy too, but I won’t have time to visit there. I’m taking the train directly from Austria back to France for my flight.
W: Sounds incredible!
Text 9
W: I heard you are really into cycling, Henry. I’ve been thinking about giving it a try. Any tips for a beginner?
M: Definitely! First, get a comfortable bike and start at your own pace. Begin with short rides and gradually increase the distance. Next, always wear a helmet for safety. Plus, don’t hesitate to explore different routes.
W: Good advice! Do you have a regular cycling route?
M: Yes, most of the time I go cycling in the park and sometimes I ride along the coast or in the mountains.
W: What’s the longest distance you’ve cycled? 50 km?
M: My best record is three times that distance.
W: Amazing! I admire your willpower! By the way, I’ve heard about group rides. Have you ever attended one?
M: Yeah, group rides are fantastic. I enjoy meeting fellow cyclists and sharing my experiences with them. And there’s a great sense of community. They’re for fun, not for competition.
W: Brilliant! Cycling seems like a great way to stay fit and enjoy the outdoors.
M: It truly is. Give it a shot.
Text 10
M: Today I’m going to talk about our efforts against white pollution. We have been cleaning up beaches for two and a half years. We are here at the mouth of the Black River in Cape Town, busy cleaning this beach. I’m a free diver, so I spend most of my weekends in the ocean. Every time we can remove at least 10 kilograms of plastic bottles. Plastic is a part of the global warming issue. It takes a lot of fossil fuel to make plastic. We have a responsibility to keep the beaches clean because a lot of this rubbish ends up in the ocean and will be consumed by a lot of us who enjoy seafood eventually. The ocean keeps the entire planet running and lively. We need to keep it clean and safe so that we can keep on having sufficient oxygen. We are destroying our planet much faster than we thought. We have to protect it. Over 100 million marine animals are affected by plastic every single year. We cannot continue doing this to the ocean and we should devote more energy to defeating the white pollution.

第一节
A
根据第二段“Hannah…spending too much time…on improving one’s looks is a total waste.”
根据第三段“James…external beauty fades away…while the beauty of a gentle heart and an honest spirit lasts forever.”
根据第一段中“a severe decline in local character”以及“Rarely do these developments reflect local history, traditional architectural styles or distinctive regional features”可知,新建城区严重缺乏本土文化特征(New districts lack local cultural identity),无法体现当地历史、传统建筑风格与独特地域属性。
根据第三段中“some communities chose to apply traditional local materials and classic design concepts in their construction”可知,部分社区通过采用传统设计元素
根据第四段中“Despite these valuable attempts, most newly built zones still follow the same global model”可知,尽管开展了相关保护尝试,但大多数新建区域仍沿用全球化模式,说明这些尝试对整体趋势影响有限(had limited influence on the trend)。
根据第一段最后一句“These particles…enter deep-sea ecosystems through turbid currents, biological transport and atmospheric deposition, posing severe and long-lasting threats to the balance of marine food chains and delicate deep-sea organisms.”
根据第三段中“Though still in the laboratory stage, these AI-designed microbial communities show great potential in tackling microplastics that are barely degradable in the cold, high-pressure and nutrient-poor deep sea environment.” 干扰项A“已广泛使用”与文中“still in the laboratory stage”矛盾,B “解决所有问题”表述过于绝对,C “不能在深海工作”与原文“show great potential in tackling microplastics in the deep sea environment”不符,故排除。
根据第四段“Equipped with high-precision AI image recognition and sound sensors, underwater robots can detect and collect microplastics in dark or turbid waters without disturbing surrounding marine life, and they deliver real-time monitoring data to cloud platforms to enable joint and targeted cleanup operations.” (To present a cleanup tool),说明其在深海微塑料清理中的作用。
根据最后一段中“However, the innovative combination of AI and environmental science offers new hope for reducing microplastic pollution in the deep sea, as such cutting-edge innovations are expected to play a vital role in protecting the ocean’s weak ecosystems for future generations.”
D选项“Most people are trapped in daily rush and pressure.(大多数人陷入日常的忙碌与压力之中。)”
38. A 空前指出“Slowing down allows you to relax your mind, let go of pressure(慢下来能让你放松大脑、释放压力)”,空后说明“You will gradually stay more peaceful and in control of your feelings(你会逐渐变得更平和并能掌控情绪)”,A选项“This practice calms your mind.(这种做法能平复你的内心。)”
G选项“Such a lifestyle creates true connections with people around you.(这种生活方式与身边的人建立真正的联结。)”
40. C 空前指出“Slow living guides you to eat wisely, rest fully and move your body naturally(慢生活引导你合理饮食、充分休息、自然运动)”,空后以These healthy changes指代前文相关内容,C选项“Simple steps build healthy living habits gradually.(简单的步骤逐步养成健康的生活习惯。)”

Beauty Beyond Appearance
What is true beauty?People hold different opinions on this question. For some people, true
beauty lies in charming looks and perfect shapes;for others,it exists in good qualities and noble
spirits. The way we understand beauty not only shapes how we see ourselves but also influences
how we treat the world around us.
Hannah's Idea
Hannah firmly believes beauty should be more about one's personality than external
appearance. She thinks people who are smart, kind, and brave are the most beautiful in the world.
In her opinion, spending too much time and energy on dressing up and improving one's looks is a
total waste.True beauty, for her,is all about one's inner self and the good deeds they do for
others.
James's View
James argues that looking good can bring people more confidence and even more opportunities
in daily life.He doesn't see anything wrong with enjoying neat, tidy,or stylish appearances.
However,he strongly believes external beauty fades away with time, while the beauty of a gentle
heart and an honest spirit lasts forever.
Sophia's Thought
Sophia says beauty is everywhere in our daily life and is not hard to find.It can be a caring
smile from a stranger,a helpful hand when we are in need,or the courage to keep going when
facing difficulty. She thinks we shouldn't be trapped in narrow traditional beauty standards.
Everyone is special and beautiful in their own unique way.
Mr.Brown's Lesson
As a teacher,Mr.Brown often encourages his students to see beyond surface beauty. He
reminds them that models and stars on social media often show untrue and polished images.Real
beauty,he says, includes kindness, courage and wisdom.People with these precious qualities can
make the world warmer and better.
21.What does Hannah think of focusing much on appearance?
A.It builds confidence.
B.It makes little sense.
C.It shows inner beauty.
D.It makes one attractive.
22.What does James value most?
A.External beauty.
B.Stylish appearance.
C.Charming looks.
D.Lasting inner beauty.
23.What do the four views have in common?
A.Traditional standards are perfect.
B.Looks are very important.
C.Inner qualities matter most.
D.Beauty lies in good deeds.

Every other week,Mia Carter,a former elementary school librarian with rich experience,
drives to a low-income neighborhood in Chicago to run a free children's reading program.Held in a
shaded community park pavilion(),it helps kids aged 6-12 develop good reading habits and basic
literacy,as many local families can't afford children's books or private tutors.
Mia's deep love for sharing books with children came from her 15-year-long librarian career.
After graduating with a library science degree from a local Illinois university, she worked at a
suburban elementary school, organizing various reading activities and helping struggling young
readers build up their confidence. In 2020,the school faced sudden budget cuts that significantly
reduced her working hours, leaving her disheartened.A year later, she resigned when the school
planned to close its library due to funding issues.
Volunteering at a local food bank one afternoon, she met 7-year-old Leo,who was staring
quietly at a tattered(picture book.Leo shyly said he couldn't read well and had no books at
home.Mia knelt down and read to him with lively, distinct character voices.By the end of the
story,Leo's eyes lit up:“That was fun!”This warm interaction rekindled Mia's passion..“My
calling isn't tied to a school library-it's bringing the joy of reading to kids in need,"she said.
A month later,Mia officially launched the community reading program.Besides reading aloud
and giving away free books to take home, she designed interactive games to make learning phonics
and vocabulary fun. Many parents are grateful to her, noting their kids now eagerly look forward to
the weekly reading sessions.Local small businesses support her with book and supply donations,
and Mia hopes to expand the program to nearby areas soon.
"I wish more people would join me to help these kids unlock the magic of reading,"Mia
shared. She's already recruiting()and training volunteers, mostly college students passionate
about education and working with children."They want to make a real difference in these kids'
lives,just like me,she added with a smile.

While urban development has expanded at a striking rate across Western nations in recent
decades, planning studies reveal a severe decline in local character within newly built urban
districts. Many modern neighborhoods appear almost indistinguishable across countries,
characterized by monolithic(单一风格的)high-rise apartments, broad highways and commercial
zones.Rarely do these developments reflect local history, traditional architectural styles or
distinctive regional features, leaving cities lacking in humanity and easily confused with one
another.
Jane Jacobs,a leading urbanist, strongly criticizes this tendency in her classic work The Death
and Life of Great American Cities. In this book, she urges a complete reassessment of modern
urban design and its vital role in preserving cultural diversity and historical legacy ()
The shift toward sameness emerged several decades ago.Numerous historic streets and
distinctive local architectural styles were demolished to make way for modern international designs,
all in the name of faster construction and simpler traffic management. To resist this harmful
tendency, some communities chose to apply traditional local materials and classic design concepts in
their construction. Most notably,a European urban movement in the 1970s demanded the
protection of traditional local styles in all new projects. Also, similar campaigns of cultural
preservation spread across North America during the 1990s.
Despite these valuable attempts, most newly built zones still follow the same global model,
and characterless neighborhoods continue to expand.A recent study indicates that nearly 70 percent
of Western residents believe modern districts lack cultural warmth, greatly reducing the
attractiveness and comfort of urban life.
While we attach great importance to modernization and efficiency,we often overlook the lasting
value of local tradition.Do we truly wish our cities to abandon the unique characters shaped by
hundreds of years of history?Jacobs'central argument rings true today:it's time to reconsider the
true meaning of the districts we build.
28.What phenomenon is presented in paragraph 1?
A.City development has slowed sharply.
B.Historic streets disappear in old centers.
C.Business zones grow less attractive.
D.New districts lack local cultural identity.
29.How did some communities protect local cultural features?
A.By using traditional design elements.
B.By building more high-rise buildings.
C.By copying international business zones.
D.By widening roads quickly.

Microplastic pollution has become a pressing global environmental crisis, with tiny plastic
particles found even in the deepest parts of the ocean such as the Mariana Trench, reaching levels of
up to 13,500 particles per cubic meter at a depth of a depth of 6,800 meters. These particles,
mostly smaller than 1 micrometer, enter deep-sea ecosystems through turbid currents(浑浊水流),
biological transport and atmospheric deposition, posing severe and long-lasting threats to the
balance of marine food chains and delicate deep-sea organisms.
To address this tough challenge,AI technology has emerged as a powerful and reliable tool for
tracking microplastics..By combining large amounts of data from underwater sensors(传感器),
satellite remote sensing and ocean current movement models,AI systems like The Ocean Cleanup's
Plastic Tracker can identify pollution hotspots and track their sources with high accuracy, which
helps researchers quickly pinpoint key pollution pathways ranging from industrial waste discharge to
illegal marine disposal activities.
Another promising application lies in AI-assisted microbial degradation(微生物降解),where
scientists are using advanced machine learning programs to design improved microbial groups that
can break down plastic compounds more efficiently.Though still in the laboratory stage, these AI-
designed microbial communities show great potential in tackling microplastics that are barely
degradable in the cold,high-pressure and nutrient-poor deep sea environment.
Equipped with high-precision AI image recognition and sound sensors, underwater robots can
detect and collect microplastics in dark or turbid waters without disturbing surrounding marine life,
and they deliver real-time monitoring data to cloud platforms to enable joint and targeted cleanup
operations.
While these technologies have achieved significant progress in recent years, serious challenges
remain, including high development costs and technical bottlenecks that arise in extreme deep-sea
environments. However, the innovative combination of AI and environmental science offers new
hope for reducing microplastic pollution in the deep sea,as such cutting-edge innovations are
expected to play a vital role in protecting the ocean's weak ecosystems for future generations.
32.What harm does microplastic pollution do to deep-sea ecosystems?
A.Changing atmospheric patterns.
B.Upsetting its ecological stability.
C.Reducing turbid current numbers.
D.Blocking AI monitoring tools.
33.What can we infer about AI-assisted microbial degradation?
A.It has been widely used.
B.It solves all problems.
C.It can't work in deep sea.
D.It has future promise.
34.Why does the author mention Al-equipped underwater robots?
A.To present a cleanup tool.
B.To stress robot costs.
C.To explain water turbidity.
D.To show waste variety.
35.What is the author's attitude to AI in solving deep-sea microplastic pollution?
A.Doubtful.
B.Critical.
C.Optimistic.
D.Indifferent.

It was a cool Saturday afternoon in early autumn.I wandered through the community's green
belt, collecting fallen maple leaves for my biology project, when a weak meow caught my ear.
Following the sound,I spotted a tiny cat under a rose bush, its right hind leg bent awkwardly and
covered with dried blood. Its big golden eyes looked at me with fear and helplessness.
I knelt down slowly, holding out my hand. The cat stepped back at first but then hesitantly
rubbed its head against my hand.I noticed a worn red collar with no name tag-only a small bell
that barely jingled.My heart ached,but I hesitated.Mom had always said stray()animals
might carry germs()and would never let a cat into our house.
For three days,I slipped out with leftover chicken and warm milk.I made a shelter with an old
cardboard box lined with my worn scarf. The cat, which I named Mimi, grew more trusting. It
made soft sounds as I cleaned its wound with cleaning wipes. One evening,Mom almost caught
me-she called my name while I fed Mimi, and I had to hide the cat behind fallen branches.
That night,a heavy rainstorm hit.I turned over and over again, worrying Mimi's cardboard
box wouldn't hold up."What if it gets sick or dies?"I whispered.Grabbing a blanket and an
umbrella,I slipped out while Mom and Dad were watching TV.
When I reached the green belt, the box was wet through and collapsed.I found Mimi shaking
under a tree, its wound bleeding again.I wrapped it tightly with the blanket and held it close. As I
walked back,Mimi rubbed my neck.I knew Mom might be angry,but I couldn't leave it.Little
did I know,Mom had noticed my late-night trips and followed me,her eyes softening as she
watched me care for the cat.
