Festival Of Fairytales
What happens in our gardens—and in nature generally—is its own form of magic and, this summer, the Garden Museum will highlight that fact in its Festival Of Fairytales (Aug.11).The one-day event is sure to inspire the imagination of young minds with everything from creative arts workshops, live storytelling and theatrical performances.Fancy dress is encouraged, but optional.
Buckingham Palace Summer Opening
Every summer London’s most famous house opens for tours with an accompanying exhibition.Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms, but only 19 of them, the State Rooms, are open to the public. These are the grand spaces, where the King hosts receptions and entertains guests.
Be prepared for airport-style security.Cameras are banned inside the State Rooms.Food and drink is a no-no,too.

Jesse Barber,a documentary photographer and lifelong resident of Western North Carolina, brings a deeply personal camera to cover the destruction of Hurricane Helene. As a graduate of Appalachian State University in Documentary and Appalachian Studies,Barber focuses on capturing (拍摄) rural life in his beloved mountains. However,Helene presented an unexpected challenge.
“The photos of destruction are endless, and are going to continue to be endless,” he said.Barber drove over 1,000 miles in the region over three days last week,to Brevard and beyond, finding the shots, talking with rescue workers and residents. But as a local,Barber brought a different focus than many journalists and photographers covering the storm’s destruction and the beginnings of recovery.“I started to feel the outsider in me becomes the insider,” he says.
His copious knowledge of the conditions in the area proved crucial. When an editor suggested staying in an Asheville hotel,Barber knew it was impossible.Leaving his own flooding basement,he found no gas or food, realizing the situation was far worse than editors understood. At a Marion gas station,he photographed a man whose house was half-destroyed,a pure introduction to the degree of personal loss.
Barber’s approach prioritized connection over quick disaster shots.“I’m trying to experience and listen,” he says, valuing the sense of place and people. While documenting shocking geological changes,he also sought resilience (韧性) and hope among the disaster. He met tired and hungry residents maintaining positive attitudes, like a Bat Cave-born volunteer firefighter in Chimney Rock who insisted,“We’ll be all right... Things will be a little different but we’ll still be here.”
As national attention shifts,Barber will remain focused on Appalachia.“His rapid response during Helene confirmed my investment in staying rooted in place,” he says, ensuring his choice to live in Morganton over larger art centres.“I do feel like my work and my instruction are worthwhile.I just want to do my people good.”

The brown paper bag hit the ground.A Michelin engineer picked it up and opened it,revealing a cracked, leaking egg.The third graders at A.J.Whittenberg Elementary School were disappointed when they saw the runny mess.
It was engineering week at A.J.Whittenberg,a public primary school in Greenville,South Carolina. One week per month, engineers from local industries visit the classrooms and talk to students about their careers.
Greenville is now introducing the idea of a career path to students in primary school and giving students the option to follow those programs to middle and high schools. Each primary school focuses on a specific technical skill. The district allows students to attend schools outside of their attendance boundaries as long as space is available, which means students can choose to continue to follow their chosen career pathway at a middle school with corresponding programs.
The effort in Greenville is part of a growing national trend in which school districts partner with local industries to develop curriculum (课程) and expose students to specialized careers at a young age.
Some education experts worry the focus on industry qualifications has resulted in schools taking on responsibilities that should fall to businesses, like training workers for specific job duties, damaging a more comprehensive education in schools.“Schools are to not just prepare people for work and strengthen the economy, but also a place where students should experience art, music and think creatively,” said Jack Schneider,a professor of education at the University of Massachusetts.
A teacher from Greenville, however, said,“Career exposure has a big impact on kids. We’re not really wanting them to make a decision—‘I’m in the second grade and now I’m locked into being whatever when I graduate from high school in 10 years.’ We just hope students walk across the graduation stage with plans for a career in mind.”
Modern times need modern solutions. When students leave school, they need to be already down their road to college,if that’s what they’re going to do,or schools need to give them something that allows them to get to work and earn a living.Just getting out with a high school degree doesn’t do that.

Governments have been trying to improve students’ academic performances. But the awkward truth is that the commonly promoted approaches—increasing salaries for teachers, building more schools and reducing class sizes—are costly and do little or nothing for learning.
However, there is a promising policy that comes from Malawi. This poor country has suffered from overcrowded classrooms,a lack of learning materials and a shortage of well-trained teachers. It’s not somewhere we might expect to find innovative solutions.Yet it is now adopting the so-called “technology-assisted learning” method that has shown hope in turning things around.
Almost all around the globe, schools put all nine-year-olds in one grade,ten-year-olds in another, and so on.But many of the children in each class are either far behind or far ahead.Kids in Malawi are now spending one hour a day on adaptive software on a tablet. It first identifies where each child is at,and then teaches reading, writing and math at the kid’s exact level.
Children have described the relief of not having to worry about being embarrassed about getting wrong answers in front of the class,or being forced to compete for time with their teachers.Researchers have been amazed by what the students have achieved.Extensive studies show that just one year of one hour each day can deliver an astonishing three years of normal learning. And the method is incredibly cheap, costing as little as $15 per pupil per year in Malawi, partly because using the tablet just one hour a day means it can be shared among many students.
The experiment in Malawi shows how the entire poorer half of the world could improve learning for nearly half a billion primary school children. This approach could also be useful in rich countries, with early evidence from trials in the UK looking promising.
As governments around the world are desperate for policies and approaches that could ensure that kids are better-equipped for the challenges of tomorrow, tablets to teach at each student’s own level may offer a powerful way forward.

(2026·山东省潍坊市高三模拟)
Many high school seniors approach the college application essay with anxiety. They feel their lives are too ordinary to create a story that will impress admissions officers. 1 It just needs to be a genuine reflection of their personal growth, drawn from everyday moments.
I once worked with a boy who had no idea what to write about.Family? Favorite subject? He kept silent until I suggested,“Hobbies?” He shyly said,“I like boxing.” Then his essay unfolded, not about boxing itself, but about self-discipline and resilience (坚韧),qualities that any college would admire. So look into the things that shape you. 2
Some students try to catch attention by writing their essays in unconventional forms, such as a poem or a play. Most still follow the traditional storytelling model:a hook (引子),a story, and a lesson learned. 3 For example, the rough edges and the pleasant smell of her father’s handmade furniture inspired one girl to become an engineer. The magic is in the details and emotional depth.
As a writing tutor,I was hung up on language rules at first.Should I help my students stick to “standard English”,or let them write the way they naturally speak—even if that includes informal expressions? 4 It’s also about expressing ideas naturally and making connections with readers. It doesn’t hurt to tell a humorous childhood incident in a light, conversational tone.
5 Essay writing teaches students to express themselves with precision through rethinking ideas, refining language, and rewriting drafts. With multiple edits, they will uncover deeper insights and create a story only they can tell.
A.After all,I preferred a formal writing style.
B.A great essay eventually takes form in revision.
C.I soon realized writing isn’t just about language.
D.That’s why they try to make up appealing stories.
E.Whatever the form,an essay stands out for its story.
F.Once a topic clicks, the essay practically writes itself.
G.But a powerful essay doesn’t require a dramatic story.
