When Appa passed away peacefully one morning, part of my priceless inheritance (遗产) from him is a box of yellow pencils. Some barely used, some worn-down,but each unfailingly functional, they remind me of his love of solving crossword puzzles.
In his 80s,Appa would read the day’s newspaper, cover to cover.A few minutes of reading with the sun streaming in through the bay windows.A spark in his mind, and bingo! He’d get that puzzling word to complete the puzzle.
While my father used words for love,I did the same for a living. In my own mind,it did not matter how much I got paid for writing.I wrote because I loved it,often for or about non-profits—that is until recently.
“You were paid peanuts!” said some of my younger, more worldly-wise friends.Unlike me,they found the best places to publish their work and the best editors to work with. But their words didn’t affect me.
However, when an editor surprised me with a lower rate of pay for a piece they chose to publish online rather than in print,as was originally proposed,I was shocked...and hurt! But like my father,I saw the bright side—so many people read the piece and loved it,sharing joyful emotions and praise on social media. It did wonders for my confidence.
Today, when doubts cloud my mind,I think of Appa’s sharpened pencil. Its purpose may have been to solve a crossword.A crossword is complete—and gives one joy—with only so many words, and only when each word rests on elements from the others.Couldn’t my words hold a duality (双重性) that completes my purpose too? And so,now I take up assignments, some that pay well, some that don’t,but together, and most importantly, they fill me with joy. After all,it is only our heartfelt passion that matters.
1.Why did the author mention his father in the article?
A.To express the author’s love for his father.
B.To emphasize his father’s influence on him.
C.To introduce his father’s passion for the puzzles.
D.To indicate his father’s supporting his career as a writer.
根据倒数第二段中“But like my father,I saw the bright side—so many people read the piece and loved it,sharing joyful emotions and praise on social media. It did wonders for my confidence.”
2.What does the underlined sentence “You were paid peanuts” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.You were paid in cash.
B.You were paid lots of money.
C.You were paid very little money.
D.You were paid with valuable items.
3.What made the author feel hurt?
A.The editor refused to publish his article.
B.His article was published in print as proposed.
C.His article was published online with a lower pay.
D.The editor reduced the payment due to budget cuts.
根据第五段中“However, when an editor surprised me with a lower rate of pay for a piece they chose to publish online rather than in print,as was originally proposed,I was shocked...and hurt!”
4.What can we learn from this passage?
A.Like father,like son.
B.Follow your own path, and let others talk.
C.What is done with passion is done well.
D.Love what you do and do what you love.

How alike are parents and kids? I,for example,am competitive like my dad; my sister got my mother’s sympathy. My husband and his mom, meanwhile, share a lively debating style; it’s why their conversations get so...animated.
It’s an assumption that goes beyond geography: There are “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” equivalents worldwide—mostly tree-related,although I like the Portuguese “a fish’s child knows how to swim”.
And it’s reinforced culturally. There is a proverb that goes like this,“like father, like son”.It feels true, intuitively (直觉地).But the thing is,it’s not. This isn’t news: Psychologists have known for ages that parents and children don’t particularly share the main personality characteristics. It is getting attention now because of a study that tried to change the way this question of family similarity is explored.Rather than participants only self-reporting their personalities, they also chose a third party who knew them well to assess them.
This novel approach suggested more similarities between parents and children approximately 40% rather than the 25% of previous studies. But that is still very low.The study concluded that it was “impossible to accurately predict a child’s personality characteristics from those of their mother or father” and that most relatives are not “much more similar than strangers”.The same study’s findings on the impact of home environment show than “Growing up together does not make people more similar.”
But parents aren’t off the hook.Last year,a study of 9,400 11- to 17-year-olds declared: “Parent personalities have a significant impact on a child’s life.” The detailed results concluded:“Kids with neurotic (神经质的) parents scored relatively low on several measures, including grades, overall health, body mass index...and time spent on leisure activities.”
As one psychologist has put it,the most direct way to weigh nature against nurture (培养) is “to randomly assign children to parents”,but the real challenge is,you can’t double-blind—randomize parenting; if so,we are left tripping up in the dark.
5.How does the author illustrate the universality of the idea that kids are like parents?
A.Through analysis.
B.Through proverbs.
C.Through stories.
D.Through comparison.
根据文章第二段以及第三段“There is a proverb that goes like this,‘like father,like son’.”
6.What is special about the new study on family similarity?
A.It does more experiments.
B.It makes use of other people’s assessments.
C.It adopts the advice of psychologists.
D.It explains the participants’ self-reports.
根据文章第三段“Rather than participants only self-reporting their personalities, they also chose a third party who knew them well to assess them.”
7.What do we know about the result of the novel study?
A.It’s imprecise.
B.It’s the same as previous result.
C.It’s persuasive.
D.It’s against traditional understanding.
8.What does the writer suggest in the last two paragraphs?
A.Giving advice on parenting.
B.Training kids to behave well.
C.Improving kids’ personalities.
D.Encouraging kids to learn from their parents.
答案:A
故选A。
We live in a world filled with constant noise—music, phones, talking, traffic and online messages. For senior students, this noise isn’t just around them; it’s in their minds too.Academic pressure, social expectations, and digital distractions keep the brain in overdrive. 1 It gives the mind a chance to rest.Without it,stress builds up,focus weakens, and thinking becomes cloudy.
Silence improves students’ mental state.Just two minutes of quiet can lower tension more than soft music. 2 They notice how they feel and what they truly think. In that space,self-awareness grows. Some students even find that silent moments bring sudden understanding of a problem they’ve been puzzled by.Imagination becomes active when input stops. 3
But knowing the value of silence is only the start. How can students bring it into their busy lives? Start small. After waking up,sit for one minute before touching your phone.Walk between classes without talking or listening to music.During homework breaks, turn everything off and breathe deeply. Before sleep, lie still without devices and just listen to your breath. 4 It just means using small moments differently.
5 Classrooms are busy, homes may be noisy, and friends might not understand why you want time alone. Some students worry that silence feels boring or awkward.Others feel guilty for “doing nothing”.But silence is not nothing—it’s a way to reset. And like any habit,it takes practice. The more often you try it,the more natural it feels.
Choosing silence is choosing care. With practice, silence becomes a strength.
A.That’s why silence matters.
B.Still,quiet isn’t always easy.
C.None of these takes extra time.
D.So a quiet mind is a sharp mind.
E.In a quiet world,students are happy.
F.Short pauses can refresh them physically.
G.When they reduce external noise, their thoughts settle.
