When thinking of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) doctors, one might picture an elderly man with a long beard sitting in front of a medicine chest. However,He Suye,a young and talented physician in the latest medical-romance drama The Best Thing, challenges that traditional image.Played by the 27-year-old actor Zhang Linghe,Mr.He is a professional TCM specialist with a gentle personality, but outside of work,he enjoys hobbies like skateboarding and malatang,a type of hotpot, reshaping common views of TCM doctors.
The Best Thing follows Shen Xifan,a hotel manager suffering from frequent headaches and trouble sleeping. In her search for a cure, she meets Mr.He,and their relationship deepens through medical consultations. To play a genuine TCM practitioner,Zhang studied Chinese medicine with practicing physicians, learning traditional diagnostic (诊断的) and treatment methods. This process helped him gain a deeper appreciation for TCM’s integrated philosophy, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and environment, viewing health as a balance between these elements.
The drama creatively integrates TCM knowledge by naming each episode after a type of Chinese herbal medicine, connecting TCM’s healing methods to the storyline. For example,in one episode,Mr.He performs “wet cupping” to treat a breathing emergency, showcasing TCM’s role in critical care.
The drama particularly appeals to younger viewers. With the growing integration of TCM and Western medicine,as well as expanding international exchanges,TCM practitioners and students now have more diverse career opportunities. For instance, acupuncture (针灸) is now covered in health insurance plans in many countries.Zhang Linghe believes that passion is the driving force behind a successful career—just like his character,He,who remains committed to his path in TCM despite numerous challenges, including initial opposition from his father.Zhang hopes to introduce TCM to a global audience, especially younger generations, through the drama’s release on international platforms.

Neil Shubin’s Ends of the Earth provides readers with a comprehensive overview of the geology, oceanography, glaciology (冰川学),geopolitics, and climatology of the planet’s polar regions: Antarctica and the Arctic.Shubin writes clearly about various complex topics, integrating stories about his own fieldwork experiences in these places and arguing that polar science provides an angle to see the natural world and the extraordinary ways we have come to know it.
Shubin explains climate cycles’ influence on global-scale glaciation. The “Snowball Earth” hypothesis suggests Earth was covered in ice twice: once 710 million years ago and a second time 660 million years ago. After each freezing period,Earth’s temperature rose quickly and the ice melted completely. These climatic changes affected the movement of early human ancestors, whose travels were influenced by habitat, glacial, and climate changes due to Earth’s orbital shifts.
Shubin notes that the story of the poles has largely been told by men who were explorers first and scientists second. To correct this,he highlights the work of three_______________ women researchers in polar geology: Margaret Bradshaw, one of the first women to lead field teams in Antarctica; Maureen Raymo, who studies terrestrial weathering and the carbon cycle; and Mary Dawson,a paleontologist who discovered that the Arctic was warm 50 million years ago and animals could travel between continents.
trailblazing
While these regions seem remote from civilisation,Shubin reveals the impacts of pole changes on the other parts of the globe. These include increased greenhouse gas release,sped-up global warming, changes to animal populations, and the reemergence of diseases like anthrax. One of the most important impacts is on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation(AMOC),an ocean current that brings warm water to the north Atlantic and keeps Europe “warm” relative to other locations at the same latitude.A collapse of the AMOC,which some experts argue is already occurring, could bring colder weather to these countries.
“Having led my own explorations to polar regions for several decades,I feel the work has become a part of me,” writes Shubin.“But the opposite is also true: our lives become part of the landscape itself.” Following this line of reasoning,we find it important to remember that our lives in nonpolar regions affect what happens at the poles.
