Throughout our Junior year,my classmates and I have been worried about what colleges will see when they look at our whole life story reduced to a single 200-word essay. Will the golden word “success” form in their minds when they review our achievements? Or will they see the big word “fail” in red? The shadow of this mysterious (神秘的) institution steals away what success means to us.
My first step of redefining success began with course registrations. It is a well-known fact, especially in my school, that the Junior year is the time of packing many AP classes into the schedule. When asked why they chose so many AP classes,my friends responded:“I don’t know.” They themselves don’t know why they are following the crowd and longing for the pressures of academic difficulty. Therefore, they do not feel the satisfaction of being academically challenged.
Completing many courses no longer brings out the feeling of success because more than four AP classes per year is a norm set by top universities.
Determined to follow my instincts (本能) on what I felt success means,I only chose two classes that I knew I would enjoy. The feeling of success was no longer attached to what grade I received but to the pure joy of learning.
Even my failures are attached to a feeling of success; after I take a step back and look at the big picture,I see them as a launching pad (平台) for my next big achievement. In the ninth grade,I went in for my first group interview for a leadership position as a shy girl. Not standing a chance against competitive applicants,I came out of the interview with an upset look.Nevertheless, this interview wasn’t a wasted opportunity.I talked to one of the senior applicants who answered questions in a way that reflected the faith she had in herself.
This year, with an open mind and new knowledge in mind,I walked into another group interview while telling myself I was that cool senior.I managed to secure a leadership position.Ultimately, success came little by little.

At Broken Hill High School,my Year 9 science class’s crop reports read like death notices,“Tomato plant grew. Then died.”15 identical reports, lacking in curiosity.“Why bother?” Julia kicked dust over her dying young plants,“Google’s got answers.”
I realized something was wrong. So I replaced textbooks with tools.
“Forget reports.Tend your plot daily—then journal whatever you notice.” No grading rules,no grades.Just earth-covered notebooks. For two weeks,28 skeptical (持怀疑态度的) teens watered and weeded at the 40℃ heat.
Then came Julia’s entry,“The cracks in the soil aren’t just dry—they’re thirsty mouths begging. When I pour water, they swallow.Yesterday,an ant drowned in one.Felt like a crime.”“Drama queen,” Carlos rolled his eyes. But the next morning,he was bending by his beans, writing “Roots are secret miners. They drill for gold we can’t see.” By harvest month, their journals were filled with sentences like those.
“Let’s make a book,” proposed Julia.Using biology lab microscopes, students photographed tiny insects on cabbages.Art class carved lino prints (油粘版画)of root systems. We crowd-funded printing for Dirt Diaries—True Tales from the School Plot.My “scientists” sold 200 copies in three hours.Profits went to local farmers.
But the true harvest came when Julia handed a copy of Dirt Diaries to our librarian. She showed him the “Your Turn” section, which read,“Plant a seed (any seed). When it comes up,write what it whispers.Pass this book on.”
Her tomato death notice now reads,“Bye ‘Big Red’—victim of my ambition (3kg overfed fertilizer).Lesson: More love≠ more growth.Humans too.”

Your teacher stops you and says he needs to have a word about your performance in the recent class. You worry about it all day, wondering what you might have done wrong. When you step into his office,he begins by praising you for your contributions to the class, and you wonder if this is the customary praise that starts off the typical “feedback sandwich” pattern: initiate with a compliment, insert the critical feedback, and conclude with another somewhat comforting remark.
Many educators employ this “feedback sandwich” technique in their teaching practice. However, positive feedback shouldn’t merely serve as a buffer (缓冲区) for the negative; it ought to be sincerely delivered to spark and strengthen continued excellence. Here are three strategies to effectively give positive feedback.
Avoid Pairing Positive with Negative. When positive and negative feedback always seem to coexist, the positive feedback may lose its value and be overlooked.Make sure to provide positive feedback on its own, without adding constructive criticism.
Foster a “Growth Mindset”.Psychologist Carol Dweck,an advocate of the “growth mindset”,emphasizes the brain’s adaptability and our capacity to nurture skills and talents we may initially lack.More often than not, praises tend to center on outcomes or natural abilities, such as “You have a keen eye for detail” or “You’re naturally gifted in event planning.” However,he notes that highlighting the effort, exploration, and problem-solving approaches can promote skill development more effectively.
Cultivate a Positive Feedback Culture.Instead of reserving feedback for formal occasions such as performance reviews, integrate it into everyday interactions.Share informal, positive remarks during casual conversations or even when passing someone in the hallway.Furthermore, feedback shouldn’t be limited to coming from superiors.Foster a culture where team members and classmates provide constructive comments for one another.Encourage peer-to-peer recognition.Motivate them to actively share positive observations and opinions about each other’s behavior and contributions.
Embracing positive feedback not only boosts work performance but also enhances overall well-being in the long term.
8.What is the structure of the “feedback sandwich”?
A.Positive,negative,positive.
B.Positive,neutral,negative.
C.Negative,positive,negative.
D.Negative,neutral,positive.
根据第一段“When you step into his office,he begins by praising you for your contributions to the class ... and conclude with another somewhat comforting remark.” 故选A。
√
9.What is the positive feedback like?
A.Critical and harsh.
B.Genuine and inspiring.
C.Frequent but formal.
D.Constructive but indirect.
根据第二段“However, positive feedback shouldn’t merely serve as a buffer (缓冲区) for the negative; it ought to be sincerely delivered to spark and strengthen continued excellence.”
√
10.According to Carol Dweck, what should praise focus on?
A.Gifts and results.
B.Peer-to-peer recognition.
C.Process and methods.
D.Formal performance reviews.
√
11.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To compare different feedback techniques.
B.To criticize the feedback sandwich technique.
C.To discuss the great harm of negative feedback.
D.To explain how to give effective positive feedback.
√

Now controversial new technologies promise parents even more control over their embryos (胚胎).Today,a lot of those “designer babies” are teenagers. And some families are discovering that things don’t always work out as planned. The kids feel like walking science experiments; the parents are disappointed in how their children turned out.Fertility (生育) businesses are selling a chance of domestic welfare, and these families feel cheated.
People who have children this way often place too much importance on genes while ignoring the environment. It’s like,“This is what our family is going to look like. We’re going to pick a kid,and this is how we’re going to put it together.” It’s like a project or building a company.People don’t always realize they are creating a human being and not a piece of furniture. They tend to get what they want and don’t hear “no” a lot.So when their kid shows up and isn’t the way that they want, what happens?
Usually,it’s a disaster. In these homes,a high value gets placed on achievement.I think the way these kids are created sends the message: “You’re not good enough. You need to achieve.” When the kids struggle,it’s especially devastating. The child grows up feeling very different, knowing they were an experiment but not getting the proper support or acceptance they need to grow.
In my work,I help parents accept: This is the child you have.I help them make abstract concepts more concrete.Sometimes just explaining “you and your child are not the same person” does the trick. And I help kids accept the reality of their parents.Or say a teenager doesn’t feel loved.I might need to clarify to them that “love” is not a tangible feeling, like getting kicked. It means someone feels fondness toward you like you feel fondness toward candies or toys.
Trying to control your child is a recipe for disaster. The kid is going to rebel (反抗).I don’t know if anyone’s making sure parents understand that they can’t test-drive a child and then return it.You probably can predict stocks, but human behavior has far too many variables.

C.The children feel like they are science experiments.
D.The parents are unable to afford to raise their children.

The teenage years are marked by intense changes—physical, social, emotional, and developmental—that can be difficult to deal with at times. 1 As you grow older, conflicts with family often increase, mainly due to the desire for more independence.Peer (同龄人) pressure also plays a major role,as teenagers are more likely to be influenced by friends while testing boundaries and seeking autonomy.
Conflicts during this time can also arise from the intensity of your emotions and your evolving ability to think abstractly. As you work on forming your individual identity, you may become more focused on the world around you, trying to make sense of your own feelings and form opinions on various issues. 2 As your outlook changes, these struggles may make it more difficult to navigate relationships with family and cope with peer pressure.
While conflicts are a natural part of this stage of life, there are ways to manage and resolve them productively. 3 By expressing your thoughts and feelings clearly, you can prevent misunderstandings and build mutual respect.Equally important is active listening—understanding others’ outlook can help you find common ground and reach a resolution.
4 Staying calm allows you to think more clearly and avoid worsening emotions.Techniques such as deep breathing or temporarily stepping away from the situation can help manage intense feelings.Additionally, turning to trusted adults or peers who have faced similar challenges can help you gain practical strategies for managing emotions.
While conflicts are a normal part of growing up,they can also be opportunities for personal development and self-discovery. 5
A.Emotional regulation is also essential.
B.The most effective strategy is communication.
C.These conflicts are caused by misunderstandings.
D.With so much going on,it’s no surprise conflicts often arise.
E.This process can lead to internal and external struggles as you grow.
F.Take it positively, and you can resolve conflicts and boost your growth.
G.Recognizing the signs helps you become more aware next time a conflict emerges.
