Have you ever unlocked a shared bike? Have you ever ordered a meal online? Have you ever enjoyed watching the short-form videos on the Internet? Well, if no one had invented the cell phone. none of these would have been possible.
Luckily, someone did invent the cell phone. That person is Martin Cooper, and he did that 51 years ago, in 1973.
Cooper used to work for Motorola. In the 1970s, the company was competing with AT&-T, a larger company, to make a cell phone system. Cooper didn’t think Motorola’s product was good enough, He didn’t like AT&T’s idea of a car phone, either. The man had a new idea. He wanted to make it possible for people to talk on their phones anywhere.
It took Cooper and his team 90 days to design the world’s first cell phone. The product was called Dyna TAC. People could talk on it for 25 minutes before its battery (电池) died. The phone’s short battery life wasn’t a big problem, Cooper once joked. Why? Well, the phone was too heavy (1,100 grams) to hold in hand for more than 25 minutes!
On 3 April, 1973. Cooper made the world’s first public cell phone call. He called Joel Engel, an AT&.T manager. Cooper told Engel, “I’m calling you on a cell phone. It’s a real, hand held cell phone.” On the other end of the line, there was only silence.
Cell phones have changed a lot since that first call. They’re much smaller and can do many more things. Cooper, now 96, is surprised at the progress.
But the man has also kept thinking about life in the future. “Keep learning all your life,” he says, “or you’ll lose the ability to learn-that would be terrible!”

22-year-old Li Junfei from China and his team won the 47th World Skills Competition in France last September.
Often described as the “Olympic of skills”, the World Skills Competition provides a platform for youths under the age of 22 from all over the world to show and exchange their talents.
To win the competition, participants (参与者) must create edible (可以吃的) products using limited tools and materials within a set time and space. This year, with France as the host country, the theme was the Eiffel Tower.
Li and his team got their ideas from traditional Chinese culture, specifically the sunmao (mortise-and-tenon) joints that are often used in old Chinese buildings. They chose to make a model Eiffel Tower with bread.
This creative choice added challenges (挑战) because of the nature of baking. “As the bread shrinks (收缩) during baking, it causes trouble,” he explained. To get over this, the team changed the bread’s texture (质地).
“French People were amazed by how I showed my own culture—something they had never seen before. They were also moved by the fact that, as a foreigner, I represented key elements (元素) of their culture,” Li said with pride.
Li has only five years of baking experience. In 2018, after dropping out of high school, he started working at a local bakery. He was inspired when he heard about a Chinese baker winning a world baking competition. He then went to study baking in Wuzhong Technician Institute—the Alma Mater (母校) of the world champion.

People have been facing the problem of finding clean energy for a long time. More than a hundred years ago, people started placing turbines (涡轮) in rivers. The moving water turned the turbine and produced power. More recently, companies have begun using the power of the wind to provide electrical (电的) energy. Both of them avoid the use of fossil fuels (石油燃料) and help build a cleaner environment.
In the past few years, however, another energy can be chosen on the coasts of the United States. People there now want to use the power of the rise and fall of ocean water each day. Like wind power, tidal power provides a very clean energy.
Wind comes and goes and there is no way to control it. Tidal power is predictable (可预测的) and it happens every day. People know exactly when the tide will come in and go out.
In some ways, tidal turbines are very similar to those used to make electricity from wind. For example, both types of turbine must have a very heavy foundation (地基). Wind turbines need them because they are very tall and might fall over in high winds. Tidal turbines need them because they are placed in narrow openings on the ocean floor. In these places, the force of the moving water is very strong.
In other ways, the two types of turbines are quite different. The blades (桨叶) of a tidal turbine must be much stronger than those of a wind turbine. A company called Verdant Energy built some model turbines for its project in New York City’s East River. When they put the turbines into the river, the blades broke off at once. The company had to design new, stronger blades before the project could continue.
22.What can we learn about tidal power according to the text?
A.Tidal power is cheap to produce. B.Tidal power works in any place.
C.Tidal power doesn’t need turbines. D.Tidal power needs stronger blades.
23.The following sentence can be best placed at the beginning of ________.
However, it does have one big advantage (优势) over wind power.
A.Para 2 B.Para 3 C.Para 4 D.Para 5
24.How is the passage organized?
A.By explaining events in time order.
B.By offering problems and advice.
C.By describing two different types of energy.
D.By describing the use of fossil fuels.
25.Which is the best title of this passage?
A.The History of Clean Energy
B.Fossil Fuels vs. Clean Energy
C.How Turbines Work in Rivers and Oceans
D.Tidal Energy: A Better Choice Than Wind Power?

“Woof! Woof!” My name is Mak and I’m a golden retriever (猎犬). Today is my big day! My new owner is coming to the shelter (收容所) to take me home.
I came to this shelter after a rescuer saved me from the streets. I was a stray dog and homeless. I lived on the streets because my owner left me behind.
Life was really hard on the streets. I was unfriendly when the rescuer found me. I showed my teeth and barked at him because I was very angry and hungry. In fact, I’m very friendly and love being with people. Also, I was already house trained before I came to live in this shelter. So, I’m all ready for a new home!
I still remember the day I met my new owner. She came to find a friend on a hot summer day last month. I was playing with my friends when she came to the shelter. Jumping around, I stepped right on her toes (脚趾头). I felt really nervous till she softly touched my head with a kind smile. It was so sweet that I hugged her back right away.
I’m looking forward to going to my new owner’s home but I still have worries. As an adult dog, I have some bad habits and I hope that my new owner will be patient with me. People should think twice if they aren’t ready to take care of a pet forever.
54.Why was Mak unfriendly when the rescuer first found him?
55.How did Mak feel when meeting his new owner?
56.As Mak’s new owner, write two actions you will take to make him feel safe and cared for. Begin each with “I will…” and keep each answer no more than 10 words.

C.By describing two different types of energy.
D.By describing the use of fossil fuels.
25.Which is the best title of this passage?

Good morning, dear teachers and friends!
Reading is a lifelong journey and plays an important part in our life. It can not only open our minds but also make us get more useful knowledge that we can’t learn from school books. I often read books about history and some interesting novels in my free time. The more I read, the more thoughtful I will be. I didn’t use to read before. I spent much time in playing games, watching TV or listening to music. Finally I realized it was bad for me, so I took up reading. Reading has made my life colourful and meaningful. I read books at least three times a week now.
