Odd, fun and cute story. Great read
This was a cute, lighthearted book that explores the life of a Craigslist addict, and how Craiglist, a large free classifieds (分类广告) website, got her through her life so far. The story was well thought out and pretty realistic when it comes to life struggles. It gets a little unbelievable towards the end, and I don’t like it when authors conform to the ‘the world is perfect’ viewpoint most books have, but, that my pessimist breaking through.
The book needs some serious editing. She’s repeated the same exact line 3-4 times a couple of and ... (click for more)

When people think of Eric Liddell, the “Flying Scotsman,” they recall his stunning 400-meter gold medal victory at the 1924 Paris Olympics, a story immortalized in the film Chariots of Fire and a win that made him a beloved hero in Scotland. Yet, the most remarkable and inspiring chapters of his life unfolded far from the racing track, in the war-torn land of China where he first saw the light of day.
After his Olympic triumph, Liddell turned down all lucrative sports offers in Europe and chose to return to Tianjin, China, where he was born, to work as a teacher. The initial years were quite challenging, as he spent much time learning Chinese and adapting to a totally different life and local customs. However, the true test of his faith and courage came with the outbreak of the full-scale war in 1937 across the country.
While many foreign nationals evacuated China for their own safety, Liddell firmly stayed. He ventured deep into the Hebei countryside, teaching local children and delivering medicine to displaced and injured civilians. To bypass strict Japanese checkpoints with relief funds for the needy, he resorted to great ingenuity, hollowing out a French loaf, stuffing money inside, and carrying it as a pretend lunch every time.
In 1943, Liddell was captured and interned by the Japanese army in the Weixian concentration camp (now Weifang, Shandong). Life behind barbed wire was extremely harsh, with scarce food and no proper supplies, but he soon became “Uncle Li” to all the camp’s children. With no textbooks or stationery, he patiently taught them science and other subjects using hand-written notes on scrap paper he collected.
One such meticulously handwritten chemistry notebook survives to this day, a precious testament to his unwavering dedication to education. Sadly, he never lived to see the country’s liberation. In February 1945, at the young age of 43, Eric Liddell died of a brain tumor in the camp. His story, however, has never faded away. A memorial stone in Weifang, made from granite of his Scottish homeland, stands in his honor, and it is visited by many each year. As his daughter once said, her father deeply loved China and its people, and his spirit of self-sacrifice continues to inspire countless people across the world.
24. What did Liddell do after the Olympic victory?
A. Taught in his Chinese birthplace B. Accepted sports offers in Europe
C. Lived as a hero in his hometown D. Learned Chinese in Tianjin alone
25. How did Liddell take funds through checkpoints?
A. Hired local guides for help B. Hid money in a French loaf
C. Crossed with foreign nationals D. Used scrap paper to wrap cash
26. What does the handwritten notebook represent?
A. Scarce camp supplies B. Children’s love for learning
C. Liddell’s devotion in hardship D. A precious historical monument
27. What message does Liddell’s story convey?
A. Olympic glory lasts forever
B. Adversity reveals true character
C. Cross-cultural bond inspires courage
D. True heroism lies in dedication

C
Every December, my house turns into the island of unwanted gifts. People are kind, but there are only so many candied nut tins, caramel popcorn towers, and sugar cookies one family can consume.
Let us not forget my wedding-regift incident. We received a very expensive electric teakettle. We don’t drink tea, so we returned it to the store and got S75. Later, the store manager called, furious, accusing us of trading them a piece of junk. Someone had bought the kettle and discovered an obviously used cut-glass Easter basket inside. It turns out that person had regifted it to us. We paid the store back and were handed that ugly Easter basket.
This made me wonder: Is regifting a form of rudeness? To find out, let’s explore both sides of the regifting debate.
First of all, humans have been regifting since the dawn of time. Caveman A gives Caveman B a rock; Caveman B gives it to Caveman C. We call that anthropology (人类学). Modern life demands efficiency. Why let something sit in a cabinet? Why not give that brand-new item to someone who will actually use it? It’s economical. It’s environmentally friendly. It’s basically the circle of life.
And yet, regifting is a high-risk sport. It requires memory and strategy. Give the gift to the wrong person, and suddenly people are texting: “Didn’t I give this to you?” Regifting can go terribly wrong if you misjudge a person’s taste, so you should not regift within the same social ecosystem, while also carefully removing all the evidence (cards, receipts, etc.). Ultimately, the key is to match the gift to the person — so never give spa products to someone who hates lotions (乳液).
My official ruling? Regifting is not rude. Thoughtlessness is rude. Waste is rude. But giving something new, unused and suited to someone else’s preferences is generosity in its most practical, planet- friendly form. So go ahead — regift joyfully, wisely and guilt-free. After all, someone out there really needs those candied nuts.
28. What does the underlined word “furious” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Confused. B. Frustrated. C. Annoyed. D. Surprised.
29. Why does the author mention “Caveman” in the text?
A. To trace back the long history of regifting. B. To provide examples of human efficiency.
C. To encourage the proper action of regifting. D. To explain the nature of ancient anthropology.
30. Which of the following might be a successful regifting?
A. Sending a spa product to a colleague. B. Returning a costly gift to a local store.
C. Sharing fresh candies with a neighbor. D. Giving a suitable scarf to a new friend.
31. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Does regifting make sense? B. Is regifting actually rude?
C. What’s the power of regifting? D. Why is regifting high-risk?
C 29. A 30. D 31. B
根据划线词下文“accusing us of trading them a piece of junk. Someone had bought the kettle and discovered an obviously used cut-glass Easter basket inside.(指责我们卖给他们的是一件破烂货。有人买了这个水壶,发现里面有一个明显是用过的水晶玻璃复活节彩蛋篮)”可知,商店的经理觉得作者卖给他们的是一件破烂货,所以打电话来的时候应该是很生气。由此可知,划线词furious的意思是“生气的”,和annoyed意思相近。故选C。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“First of all, humans have been regifting since the dawn of time. Caveman A gives Caveman B a rock; Caveman B gives it to Caveman C. We call that anthropology (人类学).(首先,人类从古至今就一直在进行礼物的转送行为。比如,穴居人A给穴居人B一块石头;穴居人B又把这块石头转送给穴居人C。这就是人类学范畴内的现象)”可推知,作者在文中提及“穴居人”是为了追溯礼物回赠这一行为的悠久历史。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Regifting can go terribly wrong if you misjudge a person’s taste, so you should not regift within the same social ecosystem, while also carefully removing all the evidence (cards, receipts, etc.). Ultimately, the key is to match the gift to the person — so never give spa products to someone who hates lotions (乳液).(如果对某人的喜好判断失误,转送礼物可能会变得非常糟糕,所以不应在同一个社交圈子里进行转送,同时还要小心地清除所有证据(卡片、收据等)。最终,关键在于将礼物与收礼者的需求相匹配——所以不要把美容产品送给讨厌乳液的人)”可推知,送给新朋友一条合适的围巾是成功的“转赠”行为。故选D。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第三段“This made me wonder: Is regifting a form of rudeness? To find out, let’s explore both sides of the regifting debate.(这让我产生了这样的疑问:转赠礼物是否是一种不礼貌的行为呢?为了弄清楚这个问题,让我们来探讨一下关于转赠礼物这一话题的正反两方面观点)”可知,本文主要讲的是“转赠礼物(regifting)”这一行为是否属于不礼貌行为,因此最恰当的标题是B选项“Is regifting actually rude?(转赠礼物真的算是不礼貌的行为吗?)”。故选B。
D
Facial expressions are central to social life, yet scientists still don’t fully understand how the brain produces them. For decades, one influential theory has held that what appears on your face is largely an emotional reflex — an honest, automatic readout of what you feel inside. But that view struggles to explain the fact that we often tailor our expressions to the moment.
To find out what’s going on in the brain during facial expressions, researchers turned to monkeys. They recorded neural (神经的) activity while the animals interacted with one another in the lab. The team’s results published in Science came as a surprise: the monkeys’ expressions, from a threatening face to a friendly “lip-smacking”, were generated by both the medial cortex (内侧皮层) and lateral cortex (外侧皮层). These two brain regions were long thought to operate independently, but the study showed that both of them participated in the production of all kinds of facial expressions.
The two regions did, however, run at different speeds. Activity in the lateral cortex reoriented quickly, to coordinate the rapid facial movements that make for smooth social interaction. By contrast, things happen at a more leisurely pace in the medial cortex, perhaps allowing it to track slow-changing contextual factors that influence facial expressions. What’s more, both neural patterns show up before facial movements do, suggesting the brain prepares expressions in advance.
This all raises a question: Do monkeys intentionally plan the faces they make? That’s the interpretation evolutionary psychologists explore in the new study. If facial expressions are partly voluntary, they may be less like emotional mirrors and more like “tools for social influence”, as the researchers put it. At the very least, they seem to arise from complex interactions between emotion and cognition.
Alan Fridlund, a social and evolutionary psychologist who was not involved in this study, has no trouble believing monkeys hold their faces strategically. But he doubts that staged, lab-bound interactions can capture the full reality of monkeys’ communications, or the neural activity underlying it; ideally, future research would take place in the monkeys’ natural environment. Still, Fridlund says, the new study “tells us in infinitely more detail how we can investigate the neurology of facial displays.”
32. What does the study reveal about the medial cortex and lateral cortex?
A. They record neural activities.
B. They perform different functions.
C. They cooperate to create expressions.
D. They stimulate the conveyance of emotions.
33. What does the underlined word “reoriented” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Shifted. B. Decreased. C. Appeared. D. Expanded.
34. What is Alan Fridlund’s suggestion for future research?
A. Collecting specific data.
B. Experimenting in nature.
C. Detailing the observations.
D. Expanding research subjects.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. What matters to socialization?
B. Decode the signals of emotions
C. Facial expressions mirror emotions
D. Are facial displays made intentionally?
C 33. A 34. B 35. D

根据第二段“The team’s results published in Science came as a surprise: the monkeys’ expressions, from a threatening face to a friendly “lip-smacking”, were generated by both the medial cortex (内侧皮层) and lateral cortex (外侧皮层). These two brain regions were long thought to operate independently, but the study showed that both of them participated in the production of all kinds of facial expressions.(该团队发表在《科学》杂志上的研究结果令人惊讶:猴子从威胁性的表情到友好的“咂嘴”等各种表情,都是由内侧皮层和外侧皮层共同产生的。长久以来,人们一直认为这两个大脑区域独立运作,但这项研究表明,它们都参与了各种面部表情的产生。)”可知,这项研究揭示了内侧皮层和外侧皮层协同作用以形成表情。故选C。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Activity in the lateral cortex reoriented quickly, to coordinate the rapid facial movements that make for smooth social interaction(外侧皮层的活动能快速reoriented,以协调那些有助于实现流畅社交互动的快速面部动作)”可知,外侧皮层的活动迅速调整,以协调快速面部动作,从而实现顺畅的社交互动,reoriented的意思是“调整”,和shifted意思相近。故选A。
根据最后一段“But he doubts that staged, lab-bound interactions can capture the full reality of monkeys’ communications, or the neural activity underlying it; ideally, future research would take place in the monkeys’ natural environment.(不过,他怀疑在实验室这种人为安排的互动场景中,能否捕捉到猴子交流及其背后神经活动的全部真相;理想情况下,未来的研究应在猴子的自然环境中进行。)”
通读全文,尤其是倒数第二段“This all raises a question: Do monkeys intentionally plan the faces they make? That’s the interpretation evolutionary psychologists explore in the new study. If facial expressions are partly voluntary, they may be less like emotional mirrors and more like “tools for social influence”, as the researchers put it. At the very least, they seem to arise from complex interactions between emotion and cognition.(这一切引发了一个问题:猴子会有意规划自己的面部表情吗?

Possible Version 1
Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster contest! Between the two versions, I highly recommend the first one, “There is no Planet B.”
I prefer this design for two main reasons. Visually, the poster features a crying and sweating Earth, with factory chimneys emitting toxic smoke on its top. It vividly highlights the severe environmental crises we are facing, such as global warming and air pollution. More importantly, the slogan itself is brilliant. By cleverly playing on the phrase “Plan B”, it sends a powerful warning to the public: our planet is irreplaceable, and we have no backup home to escape to. Therefore, we must stop the destruction before it’s too late.
I believe this thought-provoking poster will surely leave a lasting impression on the judges. Best of luck!
Yours,
Li Hua
Possible Version 2
Dear Chris,
Glad to hear you’re participating in the World Earth Day poster contest! Both versions are fantastic, but I favor the second one, “OUR ACTIONS, OUR FUTURE.”
What makes this poster stand out is the perfect combination of its image and slogan. In terms of the image, it presents a hopeful scene where a pair of hands gently holds the Earth. On top of the globe, leafy trees and a bright sun vividly symbolize a green, sustainable future. Moreover, the slogan perfectly matches the drawing. Written entirely in bold capitals, the words create a strong impact, conveying a highly positive message that the destiny of our planet literally lies in our own hands.
I’m sure this inspiring design will shine in the contest and motivate more people to take concrete eco-friendly actions. Good luck!
Yours,
Li Hua

Daryl was a hardworking bloodhound (大猎犬) at the Farmington Correctional Center in Missouri. With his powerful sense of smell, his main job was to track people by their unique scent. He often played a lifesaving role in difficult rescue missions and won great respect from all the staff at the center.
One extremely hot July day, Daryl was given a vital task: finding 13-year-old Dakota “Cody” Trinklein, who had been missing for more than three days. On the morning of July 22, Cody left home on his gray skateboard to visit his friend Sam, carrying a small bag of snacks. Security cameras caught him passing the firehouse, but he never showed up at Sam’s house.
Investigators believed that Cody had lost control while skating downhill and fallen into a deep, wooded ravine (深谷). Injured and only partially conscious, he crawled into the shade to escape the burning sun, ending up around 250 yards from the road, completely hidden from view by thick bushes and tall grass.
Cody’s family didn’t realize he was missing until late afternoon. His grandmother called the police immediately, and his mother Stephanie joined the search, her heart full of anxiety and fear. Nearly 50 firefighters and volunteers searched the neighborhood carefully for two days, but they overlooked the steep, overgrown ravine. As time went by, the high temperature continued to rise, and Stephanie grew more terrified, fearing they might only find his body.
Then on Wednesday morning, a breakthrough came. Cody’s cousin spotted his gray skateboard in tall grass near the edge of the ravine while searching the area carefully. The family quickly called in the K-9 unit. Handler Joe Gillam trusted Daryl’s outstanding tracking ability and chose him for the difficult search. Guided by the scent, Daryl led the team toward the ravine, his nose close to the ground and tail held high.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As Cody walked slowly toward Daryl, the bloodhound immediately picked up his familiar scent. It raised its head, pricked up its ears, and wagged its tail gently, as if recognizing the boy whose life it had saved. Cody bent down carefully, his eyes filled with gratitude, and stroked Daryl’s soft fur softly. “Thank you, buddy,” he whispered in a trembling voice. Daryl nuzzled Cody’s hand affectionately, its warm nose touching his skin, as if responding to his thanks. Joe Gillam stood aside, smiling, watching the touching moment between the boy and the rescue dog. The air was filled with warmth, wiping away all the pain and anxiety Cody had suffered.
After the rescue, Cody made up his mind to do something meaningful in return for Daryl’s kindness. He spent his spare time drawing pictures of Daryl, vividly showing the dog’s brave expression when searching for him. He also wrote a letter, telling his story about Daryl and expressing his deep gratitude. With the help of his mother, he sent the pictures and letter to the correctional center, along with a box of Daryl’s favorite treats. Cody also decided to volunteer at the local animal rescue center on weekends, hoping to help more animals like Daryl, passing on the kindness he had received.
