When Li Mei finished her five-year study at medical college five years ago, most of her classmates hunted for well-paid jobs in large city hospitals with modern medical equipment and convenient living conditions. However, Li made an unexpected decision to work as a volunteer doctor in a remote mountain village hundreds of kilometres away from the city.
Tucked away among rolling green hills, the village has inconvenient transport and extremely limited medical supplies. Years ago, whenever villagers got sick, they had to spend more than three hours walking along rough mountain roads to reach the nearest town hospital. Without timely medical care, many slight illnesses gradually developed into serious diseases, and some poor families even couldn’t afford the cost of treatment at all.
During her early days in the village, Li was faced with all kinds of challenges. Medical drugs and tools were always in short supply, and some elderly villagers doubted her professional ability because of her young age, so they refused to accept her medicine. Instead of giving up, Li kept trying her best to win their trust. In her spare time, she walked from house to house, handing out leaflets from local charities to spread useful daily health knowledge. Besides, she set aside part of her monthly salary to help poor patients who had no money for medicine.
Thanks to her lasting efforts and support from a local charity, great changes have taken place in the village’s medical conditions. A small standard clinic was built in the centre of the village, where most common illnesses can be examined and treated on site. Every year, the charity arranges experienced doctors to come and offer professional training courses for Li. Li always says she will keep working here as long as the villagers are in need of medical help. She firmly holds the belief that continuous small kindnesses and efforts are able to improve the lives of people living in poor areas.

3. Some old villagers didn’t trust Li at first because ______.
A. they worried about her medical ability for her young age
B. she didn’t receive regular medical education
C. her medicine was too expensive for poor families
D. she asked for high treatment fees secretly
4. Which of the following is TRUE about the present clinic?
A. It was built with Li’s own savings. B. Common illnesses can be treated locally here.
C. Rich charity workers work in the clinic every day. D. It provides free food for all local villagers.
5. What can we learn from Li Mei’s story?
A. Volunteer work can bring people much money. B. Persistence and kindness can change people’s lives.
C. Only college students can help poor villages. D. Working in big cities is always more meaningful.

Eyes are important for all humans, but eye problems are becoming increasingly common among teenagers nowadays. A recent survey shows nearly one third of middle school students suffer from different eye troubles, such as dry eyes and short-sightedness. Experts point out bad daily living habits instead of genetic reasons lead to most of these problems.
Firstly, long hours of screen time does great harm to teenagers’ eyes. Lots of students spend plenty of time on mobile phones or tablets for online courses or daily entertainment every day. Their eye muscles stay tired without proper rest. Secondly, wrong reading habits also cause eye damage. Reading in dark rooms, lying in bed or walking while reading easily makes eyes strained. Apart from the above points, unbalanced daily diet is another hidden cause. Short of eye-friendly nutrition weakens kids’ eyes and makes them easy to get eye diseases.
Luckily, most eye diseases can be avoided with small changes in daily lifestyles. Health experts advise students to rest their eyes for ten minutes after forty minutes’ screen use. It is also helpful to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables full of useful nutrition. Local health charities often organize free eye check-ups for students and hand out guide leaflets with practical eye-care advice. As long as we develop good habits, most teenagers can keep their eyes healthy.
1. What mainly causes students’ eye problems according to the passage?
A. Inborn family eye diseases. B. Unhealthy daily living habits.
C. Poor learning environment at school. D. Too much homework from teachers.
2. What percentage of students have eye problems in the survey?
A. Around 30 percent. B. Over fifty percent.
C. Nearly all teenagers. D. Less than 20 percent.
3. Which activity is bad for eye health?
A. Reading in bright sunshine. B. Having a break after using electronic products.
C. Reading books while lying on the bed. D. Doing eye exercises every morning.
4. What help do local health charities offer students?
A. Free eye operations for every sick student. B. Free eye tests and eye-care suggestions.
C. Cheap healthy vegetables for poor students. D. New eye hospitals for young people.
5. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Causes of students’ eye problems and prevention methods.
B. Different serious eye diseases among teenagers.
C. Global charity work on eye medical research.
D. Ways to choose healthy food for eye development.
C
Many middle schools in eastern China carry out a warm charity project called “Pass on Warmth”. The project calls on students to donate unused school supplies, old clothes and storybooks to poor children living in remote mountain areas. Started three years ago, the activity has won wide support from teachers and students.
Before the collection day, student volunteers make colourful leaflets and hand them out in every classroom to introduce activity rules clearly. All donated things need careful sorting and checking at school first. Broken or dirty items will not be sent to mountain schools. Later, with the help of a public charity group, qualified supplies are transported to remote primary schools every autumn for kids who can’t afford new books or stationery.
Besides collecting daily goods, some classes put on small charity shows to raise pocket money. The money they collect is used to buy medical supplies and warm winter coats for children in poor war-hit areas. All detailed donation information is put up on the school noticeboard so parents and students can follow where their gifts go.
School teachers think highly of this project. It not only brings real help to children in need, but also teaches teenagers the importance of sharing and caring for others. More schools nearby plan to join this meaningful activity in the new term.
1. What’s the original purpose of “Pass on Warmth”?
A. Sell old things to develop school. B. Donate unused items to poor mountain kids.
C. Organize student trips to mountain villages. D. Collect money to build new rural schools.
2. What do volunteers do before collecting donations?
A. Buy new books for poor children. B. Hand out leaflets to introduce the project.

Worldwide homeless children have long been a serious social problem. Some children run away from home after family accidents, while others are forced to wander outside because of extreme poverty. Without enough food and safe houses, they struggle to make a living on noisy city streets every day. A UK-based charity named Kids Home was founded in 1999 specially to give warm and practical support to these poor youngsters.
The charity has a special fundraising rule. It never accepts large money donations from big companies or wealthy businessmen. Instead, its daily running cost mainly comes from second-hand clothes, used books and small pocket money donated by ordinary middle school students across the country.
To solve homeless kids’ basic living troubles, Kids Home opens several warm temporary shelters in poor downtown areas. In these shelters, homeless children can get free healthy meals and tidy sleeping rooms every single day. Besides daily necessities, college volunteers come here on weekdays to provide free after-school classes for them, helping those poor kids make up for missing school lessons.
Apart from material help and free education, the charity also pays attention to children’s mental health. It offers free psychological comfort to lonely homeless kids and trains local young people to be community volunteers. These volunteers patrol city streets regularly to look for wandering kids. Up to now, over 3,000 homeless children have received all kinds of help. Its workers always hold the view that small kindness from ordinary people can light up poor children’s whole future.
