If you'd told me when I was in my thirties that I would now run a popular online cooking
program with my husband,I wouldn't have believed it-not for a minute. That time I was fully
convinced I'd be a high-powered lawyer.Yet here I am today,a wife and mom at home,teaching all
the things my mother taught me-the gentle domestic arts,as she called them!
I was raised in the prepper lifestyle long before the term became popular, and my mother
wanted to make sure that I,her only child, was equipped for every eventuality."Hard times can hit
without warning, she always said.Having weathered the 1930s and WWII,she drilled into me
that the best buttress against uncertainty was a garden,a well-stocked pantry (and a
no-waste kitchen. That's a big reason why my program is all about how to become a modern
pioneer through traditional cooking skills such as culturing dairy, baking with ancient grains,
canning and preserving.
This mindset also became our lifeline when crisis-my little family of three(my husband, our
son and I)faced a storm that shook our foundation-hit three years ago.My legal career, once full
of promise, suddenly fell apart, while my husband's health forced him to stay home. With our little
son still in need of care,I felt trapped between hospital walls and job rejection letters. One sleepless
night,Mom's words recurred to me,and her wisdom clicked:"Life's surprises are like winter-you
can't stop the snow, but you should always keep a fire burning inside.
As my husband's health gradually improved,we decided to combine our love for cooking with
the need to balance work and family. We launched our online cooking program, sharing not just
recipes but also our journey. Our program has became a source of comfort as well as inspiration,
reminding viewers to always lay the groundwork for life's uncertainties, just as Mom had
taught us.

Gillian Sandstrom was a young doctoral student studying in Canada, when she'd regularly visit
a hot-dog stand on her university campus.Over time, she and the man who worked at the hot-dog
stand struck up a connection.Every time she nodded and smiled, and when the man responded,
even just that small connection made her feel seen, safe and content. The positive impact of this
experience led Sandstrom, now a lecturer in psychology(),to research the effect of simple
social interactions.
She found people were about 17 percent happier when they struck up a chat with a passerby.
"My work and that of others clearly show that talking to strangers puts you in a more positive
mood,"she says."It also makes you trusting of other people, which,I think, makes the world feel
a little friendlier and safer."
While you might not associate any extra spring in your step down to a chat you had with a
barista()this morning, other benefits from interacting with strangers are more apparent.
"For me the big benefit is that it makes me more open-minded,"says Alex Kingsmill,a Melbourne-
based adviser and regular random chat advocate. He stated,"People have expressed their views on
daily life,politics,the afterlife and parenting-they talk about everything.And while I don't
always agree, just hearing those views keeps me open to the possibility that my own beliefs aren't
the only ones,or even the right ones.
The problem is that many of us find the idea of striking up a conversation with strangers
tricky-perhaps even a bit scary. But the good news is that the rejections we fear most rarely
happen. So how could you let a little shyness stand in the way of that? Why not create your own
version of that communication and try and achieve at least one random conversation a day?The
more often you approach people, the easier it becomes.
28.How did the small connection with the hot-dog stand man affect Sandstrom?
A.It caused her to major in psychology.
B.It contributed to her beginning related studies.
C.It motivated her to learn more talking strategies.
D.It brought more interpersonal connections to her.
29.What does Alex Kingsmill agree with?
A.Holding our own beliefs is vital in life.
B.Being open-minded is the key to a chat.
C.Listening to diverse views broadens mindset.
D.Expressing distinct opinions leads to better results.
30.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Creating a new version of communication.
B.Striking up a relaxing chat whenever you like.
C.Trying to make less connections with strangers.
D.Overcoming shyness and practicing random chats.

Across the globe,a wide range of animals, including household pets, livestock, and marine
species, are developing serious health problems such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, and failing joint
disease.These non-communicable diseases (NCDs),chronic (diseases,are becoming
increasingly common, yet the scientific community still lacks broad, comprehensive research that
explains why they are rising in so many species.
Understanding these trends is essential because the same factors influencing animal health
often affect people as well.A recent study in Risk Analysis introduces a new conceptual approach
designed to improve monitoring and management of chronic diseases in animals.Led by animal
scientist Antonia Mataragka of the Agricultural University of Athens, the research offers an
evidence-based risk assessment model. This system not only supports animal-related health but also
provides insights related to public health, since humans and animals are experiencing similar
increases in chronic illnesses.
After reviewing existing research on NCDs in animals,Mataragka's study highlights multiple
contributing factors.Genetic (tendency increases disease risk in certain populations.
Environmental influences,including poor diet,limited physical activity,and long-term stress,also
shape how and when these diseases appear across species. What's worse,human-driven ecological
transformation is speeding up these threats.Urbanization, climate disturbance, and loss of
biodiversity increase the frequency and severity of harmful exposure. In cities, rising temperatures
and poor air quality contribute to some diseases in household animals, while chemical runoff and
airborne pollution influence some body functions in animals.
Mataragka's model integrates One Health and Ecohealth frameworks(),both of which
emphasize the connections between humans, animals, and environmental well-being.By putting
these various viewpoints together, the model demonstrates how a person's or animal's natural
tendency to get sick which is determined by genes)works together with pressures from the
environment and society to drive diseases.
She hopes this integrated approach will support more systematic monitoring of animals,
people, and ecosystems and help identify early warning signs of rising NCDs.By recognizing shared
drivers of chronic illness, researchers and policymakers may be better equipped to reduce disease
risks across species.
32.How does the author lead in the issue in the first paragraph?
A.By presenting a phenomenon.
B.By defining a concept.
C.By explaining the background.
D.By analyzing cause and effect.
33.Why is the new method introduced in the study?
A.To promote the latest report.
B.To assess different kinds of evidence.
C.To tackle animal chronic illnesses better.
D.To detect details of communicable diseases.
34.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Potential risks existing in animals.
B.Human-driven factors of some diseases.
C.Several causes accounting for animal NCDs
D.Long-term influences from harmful exposure.
35.What does Mataragka expect of the model?
A.It satisfies the needs of policymakers.
B.It facilitates NCD checking and prevention.
C.It identifies the growing tendency of NCDs.
D.It assists in telling various driving elements.

Gratitude is more than just saying "thank you"when someone helps you. It's a positive
attitude that lets us notice and value the good things in life,no matter how small they are.
In fact, practicing gratitude has many proven benefits for our well-being.Studies show that
people who often feel thankful are more likely to be happy and less likely to feel stressed or sad.
36 Gratitude helps us focus on what we have instead of what we lack, which keeps us in a
positive mood even when facing difficulties.
37 When we express thanks to family, friends,or even strangers who offer a hand,we
make them feel appreciated. This deepens existing relationships and encourages kindness to
spread-for example,a student thanking a teacher for gentle guidance may inspire the teacher to
help more young minds.38
Developing gratitude is easy and time-efficient.You can start with a simple journal:write
down three things you're thankful for each day, like a steaming bowl of home-cooked food or a
friend who listens quietly as you share your worries.39 Tell your parents you appreciate their
constant care or a classmate you're grateful for his or her timely help.
Gratitude isn't abstract;it lives in the little moments that shape our days:the soft glow of
parents'bedroom light staying on late as you study through the night,or a classmate's quiet offer of
a tissue when tears cloud your eyes on a hard day.40 When we hold onto gratitude,we don't
just make others feel seen-we fill our own hearts with warmth that carries us through exams, hard
times, and the chaos of growing up.
A.Gratitude also strengthens human bonds.
B.Another way is to speak your thanks directly.
C.Gratitude for nature's gentle gifts warms our daily lives.
D.Kind words from strangers often awaken true gratitude in us.
E.They also tend to have better physical health, like better sleep.
F.This can create a chain of goodwill that warms everyone around.
G.These warm, unspoken acts really deserve our sincere recognition.

first, everything went smoothly. We often chatted about our high schools, favorite movies, and
future dreams. But soon,I noticed some differences.I loved quietness and disliked being disturbed
while Lily was an early riser, always getting up at 6:00 and singing softly as she got dressed. That
made me increasingly impatient and dissatisfied with her.
One day,an accident struck.I went to reach for my favorite notebook I always left in my
drawer. But to my great surprise,it was nowhere to be found.I searched crazily through my
drawers, under my bed,and even in the closet, but no luck.
My mind started racing.I couldn't help thinking Lily might have taken it,either accidentally or
on purpose. The thought made my blood boil.
That evening,on Lily's walking into the dormitory,I burst out,"Did you take my notebook?"
Hearing my words, she looked at me with a puzzled expression, her eyes wide open in confusion.
"No,I didn't,she replied firmly. But I was too caught up in my suspect to think reasonably.Lily
was clearly taken aback. The smile that usually appeared on her face vanished (instantly,
replaced by a look of shock and hurt. The atmosphere in our dormitory that night was heavy with
tension and unease.
The next morning,I went to my early-morning class. The moment I sat down,a familiar cover
caught my eye.And there, lying on the corner of the desk, was my beloved notebook.I suddenly
remembered that two days ago,I had brought the notebook here but then completely forgotten to
take it back with me.
