Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the greatest composers in history. His music has touched millions of people around the world. But few know the pain and struggle behind his most famous work, Ode to Joy (from his Ninth Symphony).
At the age of 26, Beethoven began to lose his hearing. This was a terrible disaster for a musician—— hearing is the most important sense for creating music. As years passed, his hearing got worse and worse. By his 40s, he was almost completely deaf. He could not hear his own music or the applause of the audience. At times, he felt so hopeless that he even thought about giving up on music.
But Beethoven was a man of strong will. He refused to let his disability defeat him. He bit a wooden stick attached to his piano and felt the vibrations to“hear” the sound. He wrote music with all his heart, pouring his feelings of anger, hope and courage into every note.
In 1824, when Beethoven was 54, he finished his Ninth Symphony. The last part, Ode to Joy,is a powerful song about peace and happiness. At the first performance, Beethoven stood on the stage to conduct. He could not hear the loud applause, but when a singer gently turned him around,he saw the audience standing and clapping wildly. Tears rolled down his face.
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony is more than just music. It is a cry against fate, a celebration of human spirit. It tells us that no matter how hard life is, we can still fight and create beauty.

Sound is a form of energy that we can't see.But we can sense it.Our sense of hearing helps us realize what is going on around us. We often hear a train before we see it.Even in the darkness,we can hear sounds.
Sound can be a powerful form of communication.Think about a lion shouting. It can make people fearful.Mothers come running when they hear their children cry out for help. When people think of their favorite songs,it often brings a smile to their faces.
There is a lot to learn about sound.Sounds are made by vibrations. To vibrate means to do the same actions again and again. Some vibrations can be seen.Other vibrations can be felt.Put your hand gently on your throat. Can you feel the vibrations? You are feeling your vocal chords (声 带)moving back and forth.
When an object vibrates,it causes movement in the air.As you touch your hands together it makes the air around your hands move in waves. These waves are called sound waves.Sound waves travel through the air.Sound waves carry energy much like ocean waves do.
Would you like to see some of the energy from sound waves? You can hear a sound, but you cannot see the sound waves. Now,if you put a few grains of rice on the drum gently. The vibrations may cause the rice to jump.Speak loudly right beside the drum.Vibrations will travel from your mouth, through the air and to the drum head. You may see the rice bounce again.
Did you ever wonder how vibrations get to your ears?Sound waves travel through the air.The waves reach your ears, which are designed to catch sound waves.Sound waves roll through your ear canal(耳道) and into your eardrum(耳膜).Your eardrum begins to vibrate. This vibration allows you to hear your friends talking,a dog barking and even your favorite music.

Take a look at the two shapes in the picture. Which one do you think is “kiki” and which one is “bouba”? This is part of a famous bouba-kiki experiment done in both America and India.
In the experiment, people were shown two drawings. One had a rounded shape, and the other had a star-like shape. People had to name each of them with “bouba” or “kiki”. Both of these words were not real words in any language and had no meaning. However, 95% of people decided the rounded one was “bouba”, and the star-like one was “kiki”.
The experiment shows our brains seem to connect sounds with shapes. The scientists believe the results have something to do with the mouth shapes we make when we say these words. Pronouncing “bouba” needs the mouth to make a rounded shape. Other examples of “rounded” sounds are “oo” in “room” and “o” in “wrote”. An unrounded mouth shape is needed to make the sound of “kiki”. “Unrounded” sounds need the lips to be spread apart, like “ee” in “peak” or “a” in “had”.
Another reason is that letters such as “k” or “t” are thought to have unrounded sounds because of their sharp shapes. Letters like “b” or “g” have rounded shapes, so they are thought to have rounded and soft sounds.
Understanding the bouba-kiki effect can lead to its possible use in fields like branding and communication. For example, if a toy brand wants to show its softness and friendliness, it may follow the “bouba” effect and choose rounded shapes for the logo and rounded sounds for product names. Similarly, a technology company may turn to the “kiki” effect to show its sharp and powerful. So next time you want to design a logo for a school event or name a product, consider whether it feels more like “bouba” or “kiki”.
66.How does the writer begin the text?
A.By listing numbers. B.By telling a joke.
C.By giving examples. D.By asking a question.
67.According to the text, what can you learn about the bouba-kiki experiment?
A.It was done in both America and England.
B.It shows connections between shapes and sounds.
C.“Bouba” and “kiki” come from Indian languages.
D.Most people connect “bouba” with star-like things.
68.Which brand best shows the“kiki” effect?
A.Loops. B.Wubbo. C.Teeki. D.Bugaloo.
69.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Describe what two kinds of shapes are.
B.Introduce how to design a logo for a brand.
C.Predict why people like “kiki” and “bouba”.
D.Explore how people connect sound with shapes.
70.What is the correct structure of the text?

Charity is big business. In 2025 about 151 billion yuan was raised for charity in China. But every year there is more suffering in the news. With so many charities, how can they get enough money?
Charity is not a modern idea. Over the years people have found new and interesting ways to get the money they need. In 3500 BC King Hammurabi of Babylon encouraged his people to share their wealth with their poorest neighbors. In the 1970s more people had TVs, so charities made films of suffering children and brought the world problems straight into people's homes. The 1980s was a time of big business, so charities became more business-like: they made money by making and selling everything. In the 1990s, as celebrities like Claudia Schiffer and Michael Jordan earned millions for major companies, charities began to use famous people. For example,Sting organized music events for the Rainforest Foundation, raising over $10 million with other singers to protect rainforest communities.
Today, charities are using the“personal touch” to earn money. People give more when they can see their money working in the area they live in, and when they have a personal relationship with the charity. Some people never give money to charities. They say that their money cannot solve these problems. This is true, but most people know that a little help is better than none.Look closely at charity work and you will see that everyone can do something to make our world better.
