When I was young, all I wanted to be was an artist. When I got to high school and could choose what classes to take, I took every art class that was open to me. Painting, drawing, photography — I took every class available.
Then I took a chemistry class. I LOVED it. It was fun, and I was good at it. I started thinking: Maybe I can get a better job in science? Maybe it’s hard to make money as an artist? So, I threw away the art school applications and went to study chemistry in college, not art.
College was fun, and when I graduated with my chemistry degree, I went to a graduate school in Washington D. C. to do a PhD program in chemistry. It was OK to start with, but after the first year, I was terribly sad. I hated the program. It was dry and boring. But I didn’t know what to do about it. So I quit.
I spent the next month feeling bad about my failure, unsure what to do next. Finally, I went to a job center to find work — any work that would pay money. I got a temporary (临时的) job filling envelopes at an NGO (非政府组织). One day, they needed some graphic design (平面设计), and I volunteered. This was the most important turning point in my career.
Over the next few months, they gave me more and more design work. What began as a temporary (临时的) job turned into a permanent (长期的) one. I was finally doing something I loved, and I was making money doing it. It’s been difficult at times, but I really love my job.
Believe me, it is FAR more important that you are happy and get to do what you enjoy every day and get paid less for it, than to get up unwillingly in the morning because you dislike what you do.
26. Why did the author decide to study chemistry instead of art?
A. She thought she could get a better job in science.
B. She found art classes too difficult in high school.
C. Her parents asked her to study chemistry.
D. She didn’t get accepted into any art school.
27. How did the author feel after her first year in graduate school?
A. Excited. B. Sad. C. Confident. D. Angry.
28. What personal qualities helped the author turn a temporary job into a long-term career?
A. Being careful and quiet.
B. Having a degree in chemistry.
C. Knowing many people at the NGO.
D. Being willing to try new things and her love for art.
29. What can we infer about the author’s attitude toward her career change?
A. She thinks people should never give up on their first dream.
B. She feels she was lucky and did not really earn her success.
C. She believes following one’s passion is more important than money.
D. She regrets studying chemistry in college because it’s a waste of time.
30. What’s the best title for the text?
A. A Hard Lesson in Chemistry B. The Long Way Back to Art
C. A Temporary Job in Washington D. C. D. How to Choose a College Major
A 27. B 28. D 29. C 30. B
第二段提到“Maybe I can get a better job in science? Maybe it’s hard to make money as an artist”,说明作者放弃艺术选择化学是出于对未来就业前景和收入的考虑。
第三段提到“but after the first year, I was terribly sad. I hated the program”,说明作者在读研究生第一年后的感受是悲伤的。
【28题详解】
第四段提到“One day, they needed some graphic design (平面设计), and I volunteered”,说明作者主动志愿承担平面设计工作,以及第五段提到“I was finally doing something I loved”,说明她愿意尝试新机会以及对艺术设计的热爱帮助她将临时工作变成了长期职业。
最后一段作者的建议“Believe me, it is FAR more important that you are happy and get to do what you enjoy every day and get paid less for it, than to get up unwillingly in the morning because you dislike what you do”,说明作者认为做自己喜欢的事、哪怕赚得少,也比做不喜欢的工作赚得多更重要,即她认为追随自己的热爱比金钱更重要。
C
In the 1979 song Dance Away by the British band Roxy Music, there’s a line that goes: Loneliness is a crowded room. The idea is that we can be lonely even in a place full of people. And that’s something that Seoul (首尔), a city of 9.6 million people, wants to change.
To help people who feel alone, the South Korean capital has opened special places called “mind convenience stores”. These stores are easy to find, just like common convenience stores, but they offer something different—a friendly place to relax and meet others. Visitors can enjoy free food, play board games, watch movies, or even try foot spas (足浴). There are also counselors (咨询师) to speak to for those having a hard time.
One 53-year-old woman who lives alone said, “When you’re feeling low, staying at home just makes things worse.” But she said it felt easier to get out of the house when she knew there was a place to go.
The “mind convenience stores” are part of a larger plan called “Seoul without loneliness”. The city’s mayor (市长), Oh Se-hoon, announced that Seoul will spend more than $300 million over five years to fight loneliness. The program also includes a 24-hour hotline for people who need someone to talk to. The hotline has already gotten thousands of calls, many from younger adults, since it started in April.
In Seoul, the number of single-person households has risen from 16% to almost 40% over the last 20 years. Many of these single people have reported suffering from loneliness. The city hopes these new stores will help people feel less alone and more connected.
31. Why does the writer mention the song Dance Away at the start of the passage?
A. To lead in the topic of this passage. B. To show the popularity of the song.
C. To introduce the band Roxy Music. D. To explain the influence of loneliness.
32. What is the main purpose of Seoul’s “mind convenience stores”?
A. To help people who feel lonely. B. To make poor people live better.
C. To bring convenience for people. D. To provide the elderly with a friendly place.
33. What do the 53-year-old woman’s words mean?
A. She prefers to be alone when she is sad.
B. She enjoys staying home when she has time.
C. She buys products in “mind convenience stores”.
D. She finds some comfort in “mind convenience stores”.
34. What do we know about the 24-hour hotline in the program?
A. It started five years ago. B. It is widely welcomed by people.
C. People have different ideas about it. D. Other cities will build it soon.
35. What measures does South Korea take to help lonely people?
① Open “mind convenience stores”.
② Start a 24-hour hotline.
③ Spend money on the “Seoul without loneliness” plan.
④ Force people to join community activities.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
31. A 32. A 33. D 34. B 35. A
根据第二段“To help people who feel alone, the South Korean capital has opened special places called ‘mind convenience stores’”可知,开设这些商店的主要目的是帮助那些感到孤独的人。
根据第四段“The hotline has already gotten thousands of calls...since it started in April”可知,热线自开通以来已接到数千个电话,说明该措施受到人们欢迎。
根据全文内容,韩国首尔采取的措施包括:“the South Korean capital has opened special places called ‘mind convenience stores’”开设“心灵便利店”;“The program also includes a 24-hour hotline for people who need someone to talk to.”启动24小时热线;“Oh Se-hoon, announced that Seoul will spend more than $ 300 million over five years to fight loneliness.”

Start Your Adventure of Invention
The art of invention is mostly about ideas, but you’ll need the right tools, like scissors, glue and cloth, to turn your ideas into real, working inventions. In fact, anything lying around your house can be used to make inventions. ____36____
Find a good problem
____37____ If you think your duster (除尘掸子) doesn’t work well, you can try to make a better one.
Brainstorm
____38____ Or choose anything around you and ask, “How is that like my idea? How are the cat’s legs like dusters?”
Make a model
Test out your idea with a model. If you want a duster driven by a cat, you could glue some dusters to sticks (棍) to see if walking like a cat will indeed clean the floor.
____39____
Test the model, correct it, and test again until it works the way you want. Expect your idea to change a lot during the tests.
Build a prototype (原型)
Finally, when you think you’ve got everything worked out, it’s time to make your final working product a prototype. Now you can show people what it looks like and how it works.
____40____
A. Try out, rebuild, repeat.
B. Think about what you want to solve.
C. It’s time to start your adventure of invention!
D. There are no rules for invention, but where to start?
E. Come up with 15 solutions in a minute, no matter how crazy they may seem.
D 37. B 38. E 39. A 40. C
D项“There are no rules for invention, but where to start?”
本段的小标题是Find a good problem。 B项“Think about what you want to solve.”
E项“Come up with 15 solutions in a minute, no matter how crazy they may seem.”
A项“Try out, rebuild, repeat.”
C项“It’s time to start your adventure of invention!”

One possible version:
Hello, everyone!
I’m sorry to hear that some students feel nervous because of lacking confidence. Here is some advice that might help them.
To become confident, we should first divide big goals into small goals. After achieving each goal, we can get a strong sense of achievement. Second, enough preparation builds confidence. Before each class, take time to preview what we’re going to learn. When you’re well-prepared, you’ll be more confident and brave enough to answer the questions that the teacher may ask. Last but not least, practice makes progress. The more we practice what we have learned, the more progress we’ll make.
With time and effort, anyone can become more confident. Just believe in yourself and keep trying. Confidence grows as we take action and learn from experience.
