Two teenagers from Texas have invented a small device that uses soundwaves to remove microplastics from water. Their invention could help clean water around the world.
Seventeen-year-olds Victoria Ou and Justin Huang from The Woodlands, Texas developed a pen-sized device that uses high-frequency soundwaves to trap microplastics in water. The device works by creating sound forces that push tiny plastic pieces together. Once they gather together, these plastics can be easily removed without chemicals, heat, or much energy.
In lab tests, the device removed between 84% and 94% of microplastics in just one pass. The teens presented their work at the 2024 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, where they won the famous Gordon E. Moore Award and a $50,000 prize.
What makes their invention special is that it is simple, small, and can be used at different scales. Unlike traditional filtering systems that use screens or chemicals, their soundwave method is gentle and saves energy. According to Huang and Ou, the device could be used in wastewater treatment plants, textile factories, rural water systems, and even washing machines or fish tanks.
Although more testing and improvements are needed before it can be widely used, their invention is a big step forward in fighting microplastic pollution. It also shows how young people can use creativity and science to solve global problems.
1. How does the device remove microplastics from water?
A. By heating water to break down plastics.
B. By adding chemicals to break down plastics.
C. By passing water through fine metal screens.
D. By creating sound forces to push plastic pieces together.
2. What makes this invention special compared to traditional methods?
A. It requires more energy to work.
B. It is simple, small, and energy-saving.
C. It works only in large treatment plants.
D. It depends heavily on chemical treatments.
3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The invention did not perform well in lab tests.

Brands have spent years perfecting video marketing strategies. Nearly 78% of consumers trust videos with real people, according to research from video creation platform Animoto. That preference holds as AI video tools flood the market and brands race to create more content faster. The finding comes from Animoto’s State of Video 2026 report, based on a survey of 460 American consumers and marketers. As AI generates full videos from text prompts (提示), the truth remains: People still want to see other people.
The preference for human faces isn’t just about aesthetics (美学). More than 82% of consumers report watching videos that they believe were AI-generated, and among that group, 36% say it lowers their trust in the brand behind it. This creates a problem with the numbers for marketers. Even if AI tools can help produce videos faster, the resulting content may raise doubt that destroys the entire purpose of making the video in the first place.
Separate research cited in the report found that 88% of consumers consider brand trust as important as price and quality when making purchases. Three-quarters of US adults think it’s extremely or very important to know whether images, videos, or text were created by AI or people. This trust loss appears regardless of whether audiences correctly identify AI content. The survey showed that consumers believe they can spot AI-generated videos based on “an entire set of signals” and contextual mismatches, according to respondent Olga Mirkovic. Whether they’re right doesn’t matter. Perception alone affects how they view the brand.
Surveyed marketing professionals aren’t trying to remove humans from their videos. Despite pressure to produce more content faster, marketers still want control over which footage to use, how to present their brand voice, and when to put themselves on camera. Roya Safarian, a survey respondent, explained the balance: “AI can enhance storytelling as long as the brand still keeps a human touch. The key is balance: Technology should support the message, not replace the genuine voice behind it.”
4. What is the most effective trust-building video marketing strategy?
A. Making videos featuring real people.
B. Using AI to generate videos quickly.
C. Updating video production fashion.
D. Producing true video content faster.
5. In what circumstances does the trust loss occur?
A. When video aesthetics are poor. B. When video production speeds up.
C. When AI content is perceived. D. When brand trust is compared to price.
6. What do marketing professionals suggest AI be used for in video-making?
A. Generating videos automatically. B. Aiding in content creation as a tool.
C. Controlling brand voice directly. D. Replacing human presenters entirely.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Contrasting AI and Human-made Videos
B. Building Consumer Trust with AI Videos
C. Facing Trust Crisis in AI-generated Videos
D. Balancing Technology and Humanity in Videos
A 5. C 6. B 7. D
根据第一段“Nearly 78% of consumers trust videos with real people (近78%的消费者相信真人拍摄的视频)”以及“As AI generates full videos from text prompts (提示), the truth remains: People still want to see other people. (虽然人工智能可以根据文本提示生成完整的视频,但事实仍然是:人们仍然希望看到其他人。)”可知,消费者依然信任并希望看到视频中有真人出现。由此可知,建立信任最有效的视频营销策略是制作以真实人物为特色的视频。故选A。
根据第三段“This trust loss appears regardless of whether audiences correctly identify AI content. (无论观众是否正确识别人工智能内容,这种信任损失都会出现。)”以及“Perception alone affects how they view the brand. (感知本身就会影响他们对品牌的看法。)”可知,无论观众是否正确识别出AI内容,只要感知到内容是AI生成的,信任缺失就会发生。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Roya Safarian, a survey respondent, explained the balance: “AI can enhance storytelling as long as the brand still keeps a human touch. The key is balance: Technology should support the message, not replace the genuine voice behind it.” (调查受访者罗亚·萨法里安(Roya Safarian)解释了这种平衡:“只要品牌仍然保持人情味,人工智能就可以增强故事情节。关键在于平衡:技术应该支持信息,而不是取代信息背后真实的声音。”)”可知,营销专业人士认为AI应该作为辅助工具来增强叙事效果或支持信息传达,而不是替代人类或直接控制品牌声音。故选B。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。文章开头“Brands have spent years perfecting video marketing strategies. Nearly 78% of consumers trust videos with real people, according to research from video creation platform Animoto. That preference holds as AI video tools flood the market and brands race to create more content faster.(品牌花了数年时间完善视频营销策略。
C
A dropped bag of chips disturbed a cave ecosystem in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. This cave is almost cut off from the outside world, so introducing anything foreign can be harmful. “Things in the damp cave get wet quickly,” says park guide Ashley. The snack attracts tiny organisms, causing unwanted growth. Soon, small animals like crickets and spiders came to eat, spreading the pollution. Rangers found the bag within hours. “But that can be all it takes,” says Ashley. “I’m sure some crickets got a bit of the snack.”
Over 500 million people visit American public lands each year, creating many chances to harm wild places. “When you look at the numbers, it’s incredible,” says Watts, head of the Leave No Trace Center in Colorado, an organization aimed at minimizing human impact on nature.
Food waste takes a long time to break down, especially in certain areas. “It takes much longer for an apple core to rot in a desert than in a forest,” says Blye, a teacher at the University of Utah. Leaving waste introduces animals to an unnatural diet and changes their behavior with sometimes disastrous results. Bears who taste, garbage and become a threat to humans may have to be put down. “Bears can get used to unnatural food in three weeks,” says Watts. “Everyone loses in this case.”
Biological waste is also problematic. Dog waste brings new bacteria into the ecosystem and scares away deer. Meanwhile, human waste and toilet paper introduce dangerous bacteria into water sources.
In national parks, trails (小径) are designed to avoid sensitive areas. Stepping off the trail, even for a quick photo, can scare wildlife away. Impacts from many visitors result in long-term damage to nature and wildlife. But people don’t think of that when they see the perfect photo opportunity. “It’s just such a hard thing to resist,” says Blye. The risk to sensitive ecosystems isn’t obvious. “It’s easy to think, oh, there’s wildflowers over there. I shouldn’t step on that,” says Blye, but these tiny ecosystems full of microscopic organisms essential to desert life provide many benefits, including reducing the risk of erosion (侵蚀) and helping absorb rainfall, and can take hundreds of years to return to their original state.
8. What does the underlined part “But that can be all it takes” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. The damage has been done. B. The rangers’ work is efficient.
C. The cleanup takes a long time. D. The pollution has spread widely.
9. What is a result of foreign waste in public lands?
A. A shortage of food supplies.
B. A shift in animal behavior.
C. A decrease in bacterial species.
D. An increase in conflicts between animals.
10. Why does the writer mention wildflowers in paragraph 5?
A. To praise their benefits to desert life.
B. To highlight our ignorance of wildlife.
C. To stress their significance for photography.
D. To show our unawareness of nature’s sensitivity.
11. What is conveyed in this passage?
A. We should encourage wildlife protection.
B. We should promote national park tourism.
C. We should leave no trace in the wild.
D. We should restore ecological damage.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据第一段中“The snack attracts tiny organisms, causing unwanted growth. Soon, small animals like crickets and spiders came to eat, spreading the pollution. Rangers found the bag within hours. “But that can be all it takes,” says Ashley. “I’m sure some crickets got a bit of the snack.”(这种零食会吸引微小的生物,从而导致有害的生长现象。很快,像蟋蟀和蜘蛛这样的小动物也前来食用,从而进一步扩散了这种污染。护林员在几小时内找到了袋子。“但这可能就足够了,”阿什利说。“我确信有些蟋蟀吃到了一点零食。”)”可知,仅仅几个小时的暴露就足以让洞穴里的生物接触到并开始造成破坏,因此这句话的意思是破坏已经造成了。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Leaving waste introduces animals to an unnatural diet and changes their behavior with sometimes disastrous results.(留下垃圾会让动物接触到非自然的饮食,并改变它们的行为,有时会带来灾难性的后果)”可知,外来废物会导致动物行为的改变。
根据第五段中“The risk to sensitive ecosystems isn’t obvious. “It’s easy to think, oh, there’s wildflowers over there. I shouldn’t step on that,” says Blye, but these tiny ecosystems full of microscopic organisms essential to desert life provide many benefits, including reducing the risk of erosion (侵蚀) and helping absorb rainfall, and can take hundreds of years to return to their original state.(对敏感生态系统的威胁并不明显。“人们很容易想,哦,那边有野花,我不该踩上去,”布莱说,但这些充满对沙漠生命至关重要的微生物的微小生态系统提供了许多好处,包括减少侵蚀风险和帮助吸收降雨,并且可能需要数百年才能恢复到原始状态)”可知,作者提到野花是为了证明人们往往意识不到自然生态系统的敏感性,即使是很小的干扰也会造成破坏。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中““When you look at the numbers, it’s incredible,” says Watts, head of the Leave No Trace Center in Colorado, an organization aimed at minimizing human impact on nature.(“当你看到这些数据时,你会觉得简直难以置信。”科罗拉多州“不留痕迹中心”的负责人瓦茨说道。该中心是一个致力于减少人类对自然环境影响的组织)可知,文章旨在传达我们在野外活动时应当不留痕迹,保护自然。
第二节(每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to Get Over an Embarrassing Moment
Embarrassing moments are a universal human experience. While uncomfortable, they offer a chance to develop resilience (韧性). By applying a clear framework, you can handle these situations properly and even gain personal insight.
____12____
The most immediate and effective response is to lighten the mood with humor. For example, if you trip, you might laugh and say, “Well, I’ve always wanted to get closer to the ground!” This approach serves two purposes: it relieves your own anxiety and signals to others that it’s safe to share the laugh, potentially transforming an awkward moment into a point of connection.
Regain physical calm
Once the social moment has been addressed, turn your attention inward to manage the body’s physiological reaction. ____13____. A practical technique is “box breathing”: inhale (吸气) for four seconds, hold for four, exhale for four. This practice directly fights symptoms like a racing heart and flushing (脸红), helping you restore a sense of internal balance.
Adjust your mental focus
A primary source of prolonged distress is the mistaken belief that you are the main subject of others’ attention. In reality, this is almost never the case. ____14____. Most people are far more occupied with their own internal narratives. By consciously shifting your focus from perceived judgment to this factual understanding, you allow the incident’s emotional weight to dissolve (消失) rapidly.
Reflect and grow forward
To fully move forward, shift from merely “getting over” the moment to actively learning from it. ____15____. For instance, intense shame triggered by a minor slip might reveal a habit of holding yourself to impossibly high standards. Recognizing this pattern is itself a breakthrough. The final step is to channel this awareness into practical change. Did you struggle to find words in a meeting? Prepare key phrases in advance next time. ____16____
A. Ease the situation with humor
B. Make a joke and move on quickly
C. This involves calming your body’s immediate stress response
D. The core task is to realize you are not the lead in others’ stories
E. In this way, these experiences build your long-term emotional resilience
F. People typically recall their own embarrassments more clearly than yours
G. The first step is to examine if your feelings arise from unfair self-judgment
A 13. C 14. D 15. G 16. E

I’d loved hip-hop dancing since my childhood, and in high school I took classes that focused on jazz and hip-hop. Dance was my favorite class, and I looked forward to going every day. And this year, my senior year, was going to be the best dance class yet. Moreover, there was a showcase performed at our high-school theater at the end of the semester.
As I headed to the studio, my friend Jessica ran up to me, her face serious. “Sarah, have you heard?” she whispered. “We have a new teacher, Ms. Barton. And she’s… strictly ballet.”
My excitement disappeared. Ballet? I’d never taken a class in my life. A strong feeling of anxiety formed in my stomach, but a part of me accepted the challenge. The studio I entered was transformed. Gone was the lively energy; in its place was a nervous silence. Every other girl wore tight black clothes and ballet shoes. Looking down at my baggy T-shirt and sports trousers, I felt like a complete outsider. I quickly changed, but still felt awkward and out of place.
Ms. Barton stood as straight as an arrow, her serious expression making the room feel cold. At the barre, she began calling out French terms — plié, tendu. I tried to copy the others, my movements feeling awkward and wrong. “Grand plié,” she ordered. I bent my knees, doing my best to copy the elegant position of the others. I thought I was doing okay, until the music suddenly stopped. Ms. Barton’s sharp eyes were fixed on me.
“What is your name?” she asked, her voice cutting through the silence. “Sarah,” I replied, trying to manage a smile. “Class, I want everyone to watch Miss Sarah,” she announced. My heart jumped. Was she going to praise me? I took a deep breath and performed the grand plié again. Complete silence. Every eye was on me.
“Now, class,” Ms. Barton’s voice rose, sharp and loud. “This is a perfect example of what NOT to do.” My face burned as if I’d been slammed

Paragraph 1
I spent the rest of the day wondering if I should quit. However, my love for dance wouldn’t allow it. I would show that teacher. The empty studio became my second home. I practised day by day, week by week, and I was proud to say that I was still standing by the end of the semester. Ms. Barton seemed to tolerate my ballet and began to appreciate my hip-hop style. Soon came her surprising request: to design two hip-hop dances for the final performance.
Paragraph 2
Finally, there came the showcase at our high-school theater. My hands were shaking with nerves, but when the music began, my fear simply disappeared. I had the best time dancing to it and gave it my all, leaving our audience cheering and clapping. Afterwards, Ms. Barton announced the “Most Improved Dancer” award. I couldn’t believe my ears when she called my name! As my friends cheered, I walked up to receive the award. With tears in my eyes, I smiled at Ms. Barton and said, “Thank you for challenging me.” I realized that this ballet journey had taught me the courage to embrace challenges.

B. The device is already widely used around the world.
C. The invention still needs more testing before wide use.
D. Only professional scientists can solve global problems.
