B Twenty-two years ago, I went to London on a special mission — talking about establishing a museum to celebrate the founder of genetics, Gregor Mendel. Suddenly, someone came in and told me I had won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with Tim and Leland Hartwell, for our work on how cells control their division. Suddenly you become a public character being asked to do all sorts of things: to give lectures, to sit on committees and reviews you are not always well qualified to be on. A big problem is that people think you have something sensible to say about nearly everything. Over time, a potential red flag is that you start to believe that perhaps you do know about nearly everything. This is a disease I’ve called “Nobelitis”, which I sincerely hope I have managed to avoid. Within a year of getting the prize, I was offered and accepted the Presidency of Rockefeller University in New York. The Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of sciences, elected me president. The society traditionally elects accomplished researchers, which greatly helps it to be taken seriously when it gives scientific advice. Meanwhile, I became director of the Francis Crick Institute. What about my research after the prize? Doing high-quality science depends on high-quality researchers. When you are young and are starting a new field, it’s not difficult to attract very good research colleagues because people like working with new researchers in exciting areas, but as you get older that can become more difficult. Having a Nobel Prize does help. I’ve just started three excellent new PhD students. It’s a privilege for me to be able to pursue curiosity-driven research at this late stage of my career. Anyway, one thing I am glad to say that the Nobel Prize did not influence was peer review from my fellow scientists, responsible for assessing the suitability of my own research for publication, and my funding applications. My rejection rates have remained essentially the same before and after the prize. And that, of course, is exactly how it should be. 24.What was the author’s original aim of visiting London 22 years ago? A.To honor a pioneer in science. B.To attend Nobel Prize ceremony. C.To promote the author’s work on cells. D.To show gratitude to the author’s colleagues. 25.Which of the following can best explain “Nobelitis”? A.A burning desire to win a Nobel Prize. B.Being addicted to being a public character. C.A Nobel Prize winner acting as a “Mr. Know-all”. D.Being overconfident in a particular research field. 26.What do paragraph 3 and 4 mainly talk about? A.How the author contributed to various institutes. B.How the author balanced leadership and research. C.How the Nobel Prize impacted the author’s career. D.How the Nobel Prize enhanced the author’s reputation. 27.What does the author take comfort in after winning the Nobel Prize? A.The ever-increasing public recognition. B.The objective and fair evaluation from peers. C.The closer cooperation with fellow scientists. D.The easier accessibility of funding opportunities. C A new study from the University of Hawaii (UH) at Manoa proves that waste from deep-sea mining could threaten major ecosystems in the Pacific Ocean’s Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) . This area, one of the most biologically rich areas of the deep sea, is now the focus of growing industrial interest. Researchers found that waste let out during mining activities could damage marine life in the midwater “twilight zone”, a habitat between 200 and 1, 500 meters below the surface that supports large populations of tiny animals called zooplankton — the base of the ocean’s food web. The research examined the effects of deep-sea mining during a 2022 test in the CCZ, an area for the mining of nodules (结核) that contain valuable metals. By collecting and studying water samples from the depths where mining waste was let out, the scientists found that mining particles (颗粒) contained far fewer amino acids (氨基酸) , an important measure of food quality, than the natural particles that typically feed marine life. During the mining process, nodules are collected from the seafloor along with sediments (沉积物) , and sent up to a ship where nodules are separated from the waste material. The waste sediments are then let out back into the ocean. “When the sediments enter the ocean, the mining particles spread everywhere and water down the healthy, natural food particles usually eaten by zooplankton,” said Michael Dowd, lead author of the study. “Small animal species feeding on zooplankton travel between the depths and near surface waters, and are eaten by fish, seabirds and large animals. So zooplankton’s eating junk food particles has the potential to damage the entire food web.” At present, around 1. 5 million square kilometers of the CCZ are allowed for deep-sea mining exploration, and some companies have suggested letting out this waste within the twilight zone. However, no international rules currently state where or how mining waste can be let out. If we don’t understand what’s in danger in the midwater, we risk destroying ecosystems we’re only just beginning to study. 28.What is the purpose of the 2022 test in the CCZ? A.To research the content of natural particles. B.To study the influence of deep-sea mining. C.To observe the wildlife of the twilight zone. D.To measure the economic value of nodules. 29.How do mining particles threaten zooplankton? A.They reduce healthy food sources. B.They attract zooplankton’s enemies. C.They stop zooplankton moving around. D.They pollute zooplankton’s living space. 30.Why is zooplankton referred to as “the base of the ocean’s food web”? A.They feed most marine life directly or indirectly. B.They help remove mining particles in the ocean. C.They maintain water quality in the twilight zone. D.They move between deep and surface waters. 31.What’s the author’s attitude to deep-sea mining? A.Curious and positive. B.Concerned and opposed. C.Careful and objective. D.Confused but interested. D The goal of this book is to make the case for digital minimalism, including a detailed exploration of what it asks and why it works, and then to teach you how to adopt this philosophy if you decide it’s right for you. To do so, I divided the book into two parts. In part one I describe the philosophical foundations of digital minimalism, starting with an examination of the forces that are making so many people’s digital lives increasingly intolerable, before moving on to a detailed discussion of the digital minimalism philosophy. Part one concludes by introducing my suggested method for adopting this philosophy; the digital declutter. This process requires you to step away from optional online activities for thirty days. At the end of the thirty days, you will then add back a small number of carefully chosen online activities that you believe will provide massive benefits to the things you value. In the final chapter of part one, I’ll guide you through carrying out your own digital declutter. In doing so, I’ll draw on an experiment I ran in 2018 in which over 1,600 people agreed to perform a digital declutter. You’ll hear these participants’ stories and learn what strategies worked well for them, and what traps they encountered that you should avoid. The second part of this book takes a closer look at some ideas that will help you cultivate a sustainable digital minimalism lifestyle. In these chapters, I examine issues such as the importance of solitude and the necessity of cultivating high-quality leisure to replace the time most now spent on mindless device use. Each chapter concludes with a collection of practices, which are designed to help you act on the big ideas of the chapter. You can view these practices as a toolbox meant to aid your efforts to build a minimalist lifestyle that works for your particular circumstances. 32.What is the book aimed at? A.Teaching critical thinking skills. B.Advocating a simple digital lifestyle. C.Solving philosophical problems. D.Promoting the use of a digital device. 33.What does the underlined word “declutter” in paragraph 3 mean? A.Clear-up. B.Add-on. C.Check-in. D.Take-over 34.What is presented in the final chapter of part one? A.Theoretical models. B.Statistical methods. C.Practical examples. D.Historical analyses. 35.What does the author suggest readers do with the practices offered in part two? A.Use them as needed. B.Recommend them to friends. C.Evaluate their effects. D.Identify the ideas behind them. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Between take-off and landing, distinctive Chinese cultural charm fills every corner of China’s airports. 36 Unlike many airports elsewhere dominated by huge eye-catching billboards and large shopping areas, China’s airports provide visitors with authentic local food and traditional cultural experiences. From Shanghai to Xi’ an, and from Xi’an to Beijing, China’s airports appear markedly different from those in industrialized nations and emerging countries. 37 But China’s airports, which are large, modern, technologically advanced, are designed with passenger welfare prioritized over the profiting from space. This is easy to notice while moving through the terminal. China’s airports display local products in their shops, yet one must actively search to find cultural symbols which are presented without overt pride or any sense of undermining other cultures and traditions. 38 There appears to be an operational harmony between passengers and airport management, with passenger welfare placed at the center of airport governance. 39 However, it is rare to see obviously stressed passengers in China’s airports. Digital tools cut queues, reduce confusion, and ease travelers’ pressure. Digitalization has further enhanced travelers’ well-being and overall experience, contributing to a smoother and more humane airport environment. Deep-rooted national beliefs and harmonious Chinese cultural values, together with their practical implications in daily life, underpin the operational philosophy and cultural atmosphere of China’s airports. Superior efficiency remains another core feature, providing the world with an innovative alternative model. Unlike airport systems dominated by private commercial enterprises, these public service hubs put passengers first and safeguard public interests above all. With friendly hospitality and cutting-edge infrastructure, China’s airports greet international travelers with great warmth, embodying the remarkable modern progress of the country. 40 A.So passengers are central, not commercial profit. B.Travelling in advanced capitalist countries is often stressful. C.There are no signs of blind localism or nationalism in the airports. D.Passengers can feel this warm atmosphere the moment they step inside. E.Some airports elsewhere operate mainly like companies’ selling space. F.This people-oriented development approach has proven highly practical and successful. G.In contrast, many airports abroad are designed to turn passengers’ waiting into profit-making time. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 It was past noon on a sunny Saturday. He thought, watching her face transform from blue to purple to pale. Soon, she was 54 to the hospital and released later that day. The media branded Bell a hero. It was believed that we could judge a person’s integrity and wisdom by 56 naturally flows from their brush. When 57 (evaluate) calligraphy, experts look for “spirit resonance” (气韵) — a quality extremely difficult to define, yet instantly recognizable to the 58 (train) eye. It is this pursuit of spiritual expression that lifts calligraphy to a high art form. This philosophical depth is evident in the works of Wang Xizhi, 59 calligrapher of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, whose masterpiece “Lantingji Xu” 60 (celebrate) for centuries as the “world’s best running script,” not only for its artistic excellence but also for the philosophy it 61 (contain). The preface (序言) is a beautiful essay reflecting on the passing nature of life and the joy of friendship. The original work is lost to history, 62 its aesthetic principles live on through countless copies. Today, although typing has 63 (large) replaced handwriting in daily life, calligraphy is experiencing a revival. It serves as a balance to the digital world, offering 64 (individual) a way to slow down, focus their minds, and reconnect with their cultural heritage. Even lone wolves need their pack. I learned this lesson when I became my mom’s primary caregiver. Her help replacement seemed successful at first. She wanted to leave the rehab hospital (康复医院) early, and I agreed. We thought she’d recover better at home, especially since she used to be a nurse. We even convinced the director to let her go early. That was mistake number one. In truth, she still needed constant cares I had to check on her, bathe her, dress her, prepare meals, and manage her medicines — everything. Weeks passed, and I became a zombie. Even when I wasn’t with her, I constantly worried: Would she get up safely at night? Would she remember the right way to move? Worse still, my husband and son felt ignored. They complained I was never home. I was angry — didn’t they see I was doing my best? I kept pretending I could handle everything. I didn’t want to admit I couldn’t be there for everyone. That was mistake number two. Because she came home too early, her hip didn’t heal properly. Soon, she felt severe pain, and her hip started dislocating. After the third time, we learned she needed another surgery We had to start over. I was heartbroken. My mom wanted to give up. I didn’t know if either of us could do it again. Then our family vacation to the mountains came up. My husband kept reminding me. I knew my family needed this time to reconnect. But how could I leave my mom? The thought of asking for help never crossed my mind. I had done everything alone so far. Could I still be the lone wolf? One beautiful summer day, I broke down completely. My son swam happily, begging me to watch his flips. All I could do was cry. I was exhausted, missing my family and the joys of summer. (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I realized I needed this vacation and couldn’t attend to my mom all by myself any longer. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ What amazed me was that people loved the opportunity to help. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 1 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始。John, would you like sausages and potatoes for dinner? I think it’s not a good idea to randomly pair up students for the spoken English training after class. The reasons are as follows. To begin with, randomly pairing up students may lead to unbalanced language abilities within the groups. This can hinder the progress of students as the more advanced one may dominate the conversation, leaving little room for the other students to improve. Besides, students may feel uncomfortable or less motivated if paired with someone who they don’t get along with or have difficulty communicating with. My suggestion is to group students based on their language abilities or to let students choose their own partners. This way, everyone can feel more comfortable practicing and improving their spoken English together. Thank you for considering my suggestion. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 【导语】本篇是应用文写作,要求考生给外教写一封邮件,告诉他将学生随机分为两人一组,让大家课后练习口语,你认为这样分组存在问题。 【详解】1. 词汇积累 首先:to begin with → first of all 提高:improve → progress 建议:suggestion → advice 选择:choose → select 2. 句式拓展 简单句变复合句 原句:My suggestion is to group students based on their language abilities or to let students choose their own partners. 拓展句:My suggestion is that we are supposed to group students based on their language abilities or to let students choose their own partners. 【点睛】[高分句型1] This can hinder the progress of students as the more advanced one may dominate the conversation, leaving little room for the other students to improve.(运用了现在分词作状语) [高分句型2] Besides, Students may feel uncomfortable or less motivated if paired with someone who they don’t get along with or have difficulty communicating with.(运用了省略句和who引导定语从句) 67.    I realized I needed this vacation and couldn’t attend to my mom all by myself any longer. So I swallowed my pride and started with the ones closest to me: my husband and my son. I told them I was sorry, and that I needed them. To my relief, they showed their sympathy for me and decided to reschedule our vacation. After another successful surgery, my husband suggested hiring a professional caregiver and inviting some friends to accompany my mom in our absence. Then I reached out to every friend, neighbor, relative, and church member I knew. I simply said four little words: “Could you help me?” I asked for anything — phone calls, prayers, visits, cookies, old magazines, whatever they could offer. What amazed me was that people loved the opportunity to help. My husband took over night check-ins. My son made Grandma “get well” cards and proudly set up her pillbox. Friends stopped by with cookies, wrote notes, called just to say hello, and brought their kids for a visit. Some donated magazines; others offered prayers. Wisely, I went on that family vacation to the mountains, leaving Mom in the capable hands of the rehab caregiver. Each time I called home, Mom happily told me who had surprised her that day with a small kindness. By stepping aside, I received a beautiful gift: Mom’s recovery was faster because we were both lifted by love. The lone wolf finally understood that even wolves need their pack. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①寻求帮助:reach out to/turn to/ask for help ②重新计划:reschedule /replan 情绪类 ①如释重负:to my relief/feel relieved ②使惊讶:surprise/amaze 【点睛】[高分句型1] Each time I called home, Mom happily told me who had surprised her that day with a small kindness.(运用了each time引导的时间状语从句和who引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2] By stepping aside, I received a beautiful gift: Mom’s recovery was faster because we were both lifted by love.(运用了because引导的原因状语从句) 附:听力原文: 1. 【原文】W: John, would you like sausages and potatoes for dinner?
