B Anne of Green Gables is ideally meant for children — one might think so when seeing the cover or reading through the back page of the masterpiece. It was first published in the year 1904, authored by Lucy Maud Montgomery, but it still connects to today’s world where we forget to live in the present. It tells of the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan (孤儿)girl who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea. The novel describes how Anne makes her way with the Cuthberts, in school, and within the town. The book teaches me a lot of things, the most important being — to be who you are. Why do we need to pretend to be somebody else and project a false image of ourselves to look better? We need to realize that we are all different in our own way and accept ourselves first. As is described in the book, Anne is a colorful and ever-growing character. She “has as many shades as a rainbow and every shade is the prettiest while it lasts.” Each aspect of her personality is beautiful, which makes her unique and interesting. Another important concept that is illustrated remarkably well is the importance of taking joy in the world around us. Anne’s obvious wonder-struck appreciation of life made me truly appreciate the small things. Here is my favourite quote (引言) from Chapter 19: I believe the nicest and sweetest days are not those on which anything very splendid or wonderful or exciting happens but just those that bring simple little pleasures, following one another softly, like pearls slipping off a string. Anne’s influence has deeply shaped who I am today. This classic novel truly highlights the importance of self-love and gratitude. With its uplifting and refreshing story, it is a wonderful read for people of all ages seeking a joyful and enriching literary journey. 24. What do we know about Anne of Green Gables? A. It is a recent release. B. It covers real events. C. It is a timeless classic. D. It features world history. 25. What can we learn about Anne from paragraph 3? A. She is true to herself. B. She achieves her goal. C. She is talented in drawing. D. She cares about others. 26. Which of the following best matches the quote from Chapter 19? A. Time waits for no man. B. Do one thing at a time. C. Fortune favours the brave. D. Stop and smell the roses. 27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To tell a story. B. To remember a writer. C. To teach a lesson. D. To recommend a book. C Heat waves don’t just make bumblebees (大黄蜂) hot. High temperatures also seem to seriously reduce their sense of smell, which can be very bad for their survival. For bumblebees, being able to smell flowers is a matter of life or death because it helps them find food. Bumblebees are already known to suffer from climate change. So, an insect ecologist from the University of Würzburg in Germany and her team wanted to understand if heat waves could influence bumblebees’ ability to smell flowers. The researchers put around 190 bumblebees from two common species into small special rooms for almost three hours at temperatures of 40°C to simulate (模拟) heat waves. Some bumblebees were also put in a dry environment; some had ways to sugary resources; some were given time to recover at normal temperatures for 24 hours after the heat treatment. After the simulated heat waves, the researchers cut off the bumblebees’ antennae (触须), which they use to smell, and measured whether the olfactory sensory neurons (the cells that help them smell) in the antennae could still detect flower scents. The heat waves reduced the bumblebees’ ability to smell by up to 80 percent. Worker bumblebees, which are all female, were more affected than male bumblebees. Even worse, the antennae of the bumblebees that had 24 hours to cool off still didn’t recover their sense of smell after that time. “That was surprising,” said the insect ecologist. This suggests the bumblebees don’t recover quickly, which means they might have trouble finding food. “It could be one reason why we see so many bumblebee’s population drops,” she added, along with other factors like habitat loss. “The study seems pretty reliable,” said a bumblebee ecologist from the University of Sussex in Brighton, England, who didn’t take part in the study. “The antennae are quite similar across bee species,” he added. “If bumblebees suffer in this way, I think it’s probable that other bees would too. But we won’t know for sure until someone does research on it.” 28. What problem might bumblebees face in the end because of heat waves? A. Habitat loss. B. Death risk. C. Food shortage. D. Sensory failure. 29. Why were some bumblebees given 24 hours to recover after the treatment? A. To count their number and species. B. To prevent the researchers making mistakes. C. To make sure they can adapt to the environment. D. To prove if hot waves damage their sense of smell. 30. What does the insect ecologist think of the research result? A. It leads to a good method. B. It goes beyond her control. C. It limits the scientific research. D. It takes researchers’ doubts away. 31. What can we learn about other bees according to the bumblebee ecologist? A. There is still a lot to study. B. They will suffer from death. C. They will be well protected. D. More researchers are studying them. D In the summer of 2021, an unseasonal event took place. More than 100 miles of Florida’s coast around Tampa Bay became an oxygen-depleted (缺氧的) zone containing dead fish along the nearby shoreline. Much of the conversation around our climate crisis highlights the emission of greenhouse gases and their effect on warming, sea-level rise and ocean acidification We hear little about the effect of climate change on oxygen levels, particularly in oceans and lakes. But water without adequate oxygen cannot support life. For the three billion people who depend on coastal fisheries for income, declining ocean oxygen levels are devastating. As ocean and atmospheric scientists focus on climate, we believe that oceanic oxygen levels are the next big victim of global warming. To stop the situation from worsening, we need to expand our attention to include the dangerous state of oceanic oxygen levels — the life-support system of our planet. We need to accelerate ocean-based climate solutions that boost oxygen. Examples include nature-based solutions such as those discussed at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) held in Glasgow. Enhanced monitoring of oxygen and the establishment of an oxygen-accounting system are a must. Putting oxygen into the climate story motivates us to do the work to understand the deep systemic changes happening in our complex atmospheric and oceanic systems. We celebrated the return of humpback whales in recent years to an increasingly clean New York Harbor and Hudson River. However, dead fish blocked the Hudson in the summer as warmer waters carried less oxygen. Ecosystem changes connected to physical and chemical system-level data may point the way to new approaches to climate solutions. It includes an enhanced understanding of the life-support system of our planet. Roughly 40 percent of the world’s people depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. If we do not save marine life from oxygen starvation, we starve ourselves. 32. What is the result of less ocean oxygen according to the text? A. A rise in the coastal fisheries. B. The warming of the atmosphere. C. The emission of greenhouse gases. D. An increase in deaths of sea animals. 33. What can we infer from Paragraph 3? A. Attention to oceans is necessary. B. Global warming effects are serious. C. Oceanic oxygen levels are dangerous. D. Ways to boost oceanic oxygen are urgent. 34. Why does the author mention humpback whales in Paragraph 4? A. To bring in an oxygen-accounting system in climate. B. To explain the urgency of oxygen levels in atmosphere. C. To call for more attention to oxygen starvation in waters. D. To show the achievements in reducing air pollution. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Save Marine Life B. Make Oceans Safe C. Let Oceans Breathe D. Keep the Marine System How to Start Mindful Eating Mindful eating is about waking up to the experience of eating. We’d traveled from our home in Mesa, Arizona, to hike the nine-mile-long Subway Track, so named because of its amazing tunnel-shaped canyon (峡谷). Halfway through our track, which included climbing over huge rocks and crossing streams, the sunshine gave way to a light snow. Soon after, we reached the walls of the Subway Track. A small pond stood in our way, with the track continuing on the other side. Because the pond looked shallow, we began to get through, with Jessika leading the way. About five feet from the edge, her front foot sank into the sandy bottom. Then she fell forward and both legs started to sink. I rushed, grabbed her under the shoulders, and pulled her out of the muck (淤泥). She climbed back to shore. But now I was sinking. The muck came all the way up to my right leg and my left ankle. I freed my left leg but couldn’t move my right. Jess handed me a long stick we’d picked up earlier in the hike. I jammed it down the side of my leg and tried to move and pull it out. Nothing. I was stuck in quicksand. Jessika started scooping (挖出) sand with both hands, but it was refilling faster than she could pull it out. ”Don’t bother,“ I told her. ”You’re just wasting your energy.“ While I was no longer sinking, I wasn’t getting out, either. We couldn’t call for help because there was no signal there. I told Jessika she had to hike back and seek help. She was scared-she had only ever hiked with me and was afraid of hiking alone on such a tough track. But we were out of options. A few hours after Jessika left, it was getting dark and started to snow heavily. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A whistle woke me up, spotting a flashlight through my jacket, I cried for help. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 高二英语期中考试试题 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 6. To keep myself warm, I buttoned up my jacket and pulled my head inside. Meanwhile severe pain from my left leg kept attacking me. Worn-out as I gradually grew, I tried my best to stop my entire body from falling in. However, with time passing by, fear and desperation overcame me and I couldn’t help thinking I wasn’t going to make it. Struggling in both body and mind, I nodded off to sleep. A whistle woke me up, spotting a flashlight through my jacket, I cried for help. Four men ran to me saying that they were the rescuers whom Jessika had turned to and they got started without delay. Two of them held me under each shoulder as the other two wrapped a rope around my leg. Then they constantly pulled together until my leg was freed eventually. Just then the weather lifted and I was extremely delighted with strong feelings flooding over me: the happiness of survival, the gratitude to the rescuers and, most importantly, the awe of nature. Hi Lucy, how's the Green school project going? The technical part seem very difficult for me. It's not about becoming a technical expert at all. When I look back at the photos from my previous trips, they can't bring back the real feelings of those moments. I want my pictures to keep memories alive, so those good memories don't fade.
