B Robert Taylor talks about his art show Like all children, I was always getting myself and the kitchen table in a mess when I first took an interest in painting. Unlike many kids, who give up activities like art for other subjects when they go through school, I continued painting throughout my childhood. Now, after years of enjoyment, I’ve finally decided to display some of my works by holding an show at Glebe Street library. I’ve never had any formal art training. When I was trying to decide what I should study at university, art as a subject never entered my head. I always thought my parents wanted me to follow a subject that would be useful when I was looking for a job, so I ended up taking a business course. And during my time at university, I seldom painted. It wouldn’t have been easy to paint anyway as I lived in school and had very little space. I kept an interest in art though and visited local exhibitions (展览) whenever I could, but that was about it. It was later in my thirties while I was working that I discovered my love of the activity again. Since then I’ve made a point of spending at least one evening a week painting. However, my works have only ever been seen by trusted friends. They’ve always given me plenty of support and encouragement. But I’ve always wondered what strangers would think. Maybe they could give me an honest opinion of my ability. The library has offered me a room for the show. They’ve asked me to supply questionnaires about the event and I’ve included a section for visitors’ comments about the works. I’m very much looking forward to reading these opinions. 4. He organized art activities. D. He did part-time jobs about art. 7. Which of the following words best describe the writer? A. Hardworking but shy. B. Creative but unlucky. C. Positive and warm-hearted. D. Determined and talented. C Food waste is a growing global problem. Researchers from the University of Bath recently focused on one specific example of food waste: single bananas. They conducted what they called the “single banana experiment” in a major German supermarket. First, they put signs next to the single bananas. One sign had a picture of a sad banana, and the other had a picture of a happy one. Then, they observed the buying behavior of 3,810 customers over 192 hours. The results were striking. On average, the number of single bananas with the sad sign sold per hour increased by 58%. In comparison, the happy banana sign increased hourly sales of single bananas by only 5.4%. Shoppers often leave single bananas behind. This picky behavior is a big reason why 131 million tons of food are thrown away by stores each year. Wanting to belong comes naturally to people. The sad signs on the single bananas made customers care, leading them to pick up the single bananas. “I wasn’t aware of how single bananas add up to such a big food waste problem, and now I always look out for single bananas when I’m shopping,” one customer said. The effect of the sad bananas did not outweigh (胜过) a drop in price — price reduction was more effective at driving people to choose single bananas. “However, food retailers (零售商) could apply a step-by-step approach. They could first try emotional marketing as a way to entice customers before turning to price reduction,” said Dr Eckmann from the Bath Retail Lab at the University of Bath. “We don’t know whether customers will remain concerned about sad bananas in the long run, but it’s an idea that certainly draws people in, and is easy to act on now.” 8. What was the purpose of the sad banana sign? A. To promote healthy eating habits. B. To help to protect the environment. C. To increase sales of single bananas. D. To create a fun shopping experience. 9. What does the customer’s comment in paragraph 3 mainly show? A. Signs still need to be improved. B. Awareness is of great importance. C. Single bananas tasted much better. D. Stores are responsible for food waste. 10. What does the underlined word “entice” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Challenge. B. Aid. C. Attract. D. Understand. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. A creative approach to reducing banana waste. B. A study on the food waste problem in Germany. C. The inspiration for the single banana experiment. D. The importance of marketing strategies in retail. D No matter where they live in the world, in general, women are better at empathizing (产生共鸣) with other people than men, according to a study published in the journal PNAS. Cognitive (认知的) empathy is that a person is able to understand what someone else might be thinking or feeling. So if, for instance, a person is saying he had a bad time with his family over the holiday, a person with cognitive empathy would understand how that bad time makes the person feel by putting himself / herself in that person’s shoes. It’s different from emotional empathy: a person feels another person’s emotions and responds with a proper reaction or emotion. For instance, if someone is crying about a broken relationship, a person with emotional empathy would start to feel sad too, and take pity on that person. There’s a test on the University of Cambridge’s website that tests both forms of empathy. To conduct this new study, researchers used the “Eyes Test”. The test asks subjects to look at photos of the area around a person’s eyes. The person is making a particular kind of facial expression, and the study subject must identify what that person is thinking or feeling from a set of possibilities. The authors of the study mixed their results with large online data, getting results from nearly 306,000 people across 57 countries including Argentina, Croatia, Egypt, India, Japan and Norway. In 36 countries, women scored on average significantly higher in their cognitive empathy than men did. In 21 of the countries, women’s and men’s scores were similar. There wasn’t a single country in which men scored better, on average, than women. The results held across eight languages and were the same across the lifespan, from people aged 16 to 70. In some of the earlier studies, sex differences in empathy were sometimes put down to biological and social factors. Understanding sex differences in empathy could help scientists better understand why certain mental health problems impact more men than women, the researchers said. 12. Which of the following can be classified as emotional empathy? A. A person understands the dilemma of another person. B. A friend helps a girl relieve sadness of missing her mother. C. A nurse shows concern for patients by many little attentions. D. A student is happy about his grades and his friend is happy too. 13. What did the researchers do for their study? A. They collected data from around the globe. B. They travelled globally to meet related experts. C. They interviewed millions of people worldwide. D. They took various approaches to choosing subjects. 14. What do we know about the sex differences in empathy from the study? A. They will remain with people aging. B. They are related to cultural differences. C. They are common in developed countries. D. They can cause mental health problems. 15. What is a suitable title for the text? A. Men should make use of empathy. B. New research on mental health. C. Women are better empathizers than men. D. He'd only been taking lessons for a few weeks, and playing the piano was harder than it looked. This one, he thought as he pressed a white key. Wrong! He tried again. Oh, this one, he thought, pressing another key. Right! "That song is challenging," said Mrs Lee, his piano teacher, when he finished playing. "But it sounds much better than it did last week! I can tell you've been practicing really hard. I think you can take a trip to the treasure chest (百宝箱)." The treasure chest! Caleb's eyes turned to the big golden box in the corner of the room. It was filled with candy and other fun prizes. This would be Caleb's first trip to the treasure chest. As Mrs Lee started to teach her next student, Caleb searched through the treasure chest. Should he take the dog stickers, or the orange gum? Then he saw it — a green folder (文件夹). It was his favorite color, and he could use it to carry his drawings. He reached for it. But then he saw the fruit snacks They were strawberry, his favorite flavor. That would be a great prize too. Folder or fruit snacks? He could not decide which choice was better. Caleb knew his mom would be there soon to pick him up, but he still couldn't decide what to pick. The folder would be perfect for his drawings, but he could almost taste the fruit snacks. His hand moved between the two prizes as he tried to make up his mind. Then Caleb had another thought. Maybe he could take both. Mrs Lee had so many prizes in the treasure chest that she would never notice. It wouldn't even be stealing (偷) only if he wouldn't take anything next time. That would be OK, wouldn't it? Caleb looked at Mrs Lee. She was busy helping her student. Quietly Caleb put the fruit snacks and the folder into his bag and went out of the room. Paragraph1 But Caleb felt he did something wrong after a while. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Then he saw a car coming to him. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 遵化市2025—2026学年度第二学期学业水平测试 高一英语 注意事项: 本试卷分第Ⅰ卷(选择题)和第Ⅱ卷(非选择题)两部分,第Ⅰ卷第1至8页,第Ⅱ卷9至12页。 1. 4. C 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第一段“Researchers from the University of Bath recently focused on one specific example of food waste: single bananas. They conducted what they called the ‘single banana experiment’ in a major German supermarket. D. Ways of improving empathy with others. 12. D 13. A 14. A 15. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: But Caleb felt he did something wrong after a while. When he left Mrs Lee's piano room, he didn't feel good. By the time he reached the front door, he felt worse. He knew he did not feel good because of the bad choice he had made. He looked at the prizes. His problem wasn't folder or fruit snacks anymore. It was choosing the right or choosing the wrong. Caleb knew what he had to do. Then he saw a car coming to him. That must be his mom's car. He opened the front door and waved to his mom. "Just a minute!" he called. He took out the green folder from his bag and went back to Mrs Lee's piano room. Apologizing for his stealing was hard, but he felt much better. Honesty turned out to be the best prize of all. He felt happy because he finally made a good choice by being honest. 词汇激活 行为类 ①看:look/stare at/fix one's eyes on ②返回:go back to/return to 情绪类 ①糟糕的:bad/worse/awful/terrible ②开心的:happy/pleased/cheerful 【点睛】[高分句型1]He knew he did not feel good because of the bad choice he had made.(省略连接词that的宾语从句和省略关系代词的定语从句 ) [高分句型2]He felt happy because he finally made a good choice by being honest.(由because引导的原因状语 从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
