Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse, and when Oliver was born, there was no one to look after him except an old nurse and a doctor. They didn’t care about him.
Oliver’s mother arrived at the workhouse the night before she gave birth to her son. She asked to see her baby and then died. No one knew where she came from and who she was. But the doctor noticed that she had no wedding ring on her finger.
When the doctor left and the old nurse dressed him, Oliver cried loudly. He was an orphan (孤儿) and he was all alone. There was no one to look after baby Oliver at the workhouse so he was sent to an orphanage (孤儿院), with little food or love.
When he was nine, Oliver was a small pale thin child, ________ and that was probably why he managed to reach the age of nine. The housekeeper of the orphanage was rude and hard. She often beat Oliver and locked him up. This was usually for saying he was hungry.
One day the housekeeper was surprised by a visit from Mr Bumble, the head of the government.
“Oliver Twist is nine years old now. He’s too old to stay here at the orphanage with you,” Mr Bumble said. “So, we will move him to the workhouse. I have come here myself to collect him and take him there.”
As quickly as they arrived at the workhouse, Mr Bumble took Oliver to meet the Board (董事会). The Board was made up of nine or ten fat gentlemen sitting around a table.
“Boy,” said one of the fat gentlemen to Oliver, “You are an orphan and you must be thankful for the charity of the town. You are here to learn a subject, and you will begin your work tomorrow morning. Goodnight.”
And poor little Oliver was sent to sleep on a hard cold bed in a room full of other boys, to be ready for work the next morning.
—Adapted from Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

【26题详解】
由第四段“Oliver was a small pale thin child”以及后文他活到了九岁,且孤儿院的女管家粗暴、打骂他,可知Oliver能够活到九岁是因为他有“坚强的意志”,选D(but he had a strong spirit)。
【27题详解】
由第二段“Oliver’s mother... died”可知,母亲在生下奥利弗后去世;由第三段“he was sent to an orphanage”可知,奥利弗出生后不久就被送到了孤儿院;由第五段“One day the housekeeper was surprised by a visit from Mr Bumble”及第六段“Oliver Twist is nine years old now...I have come here myself to collect him”可知,邦布尔先生在奥利弗九岁时来到孤儿院接他;由倒数第二段“You are here to learn a subject, and you will begin your work tomorrow morning”可知,奥利弗被带到济贫院后,董事会这样要求他。因此正确顺序为:①→③→②→④。
【28题详解】
由第二段“the doctor noticed that she had no wedding ring on her finger”可知,Oliver的母亲没有结婚戒指,由此可以推断她没有结婚。

“The red walls and green tiles (瓦) set each other off beautifully. It’s so Beijing,” said a 33-year-old Beijing person with the family name of Lin. Lin and her 14-year-old cousin were enjoying a city walk along the Beijing Central Axis (中轴线). On this walk, they saw most of the old buildings of Beijing, like the Forbidden City and the Bell and Drum Towers.
Since the show “Glory Is Back! Beijing (《登场了!北京中轴线》)” was on, more and more people have become interested in the Central Axis. Some even travel on foot to know it better themselves.
Dating back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), the 7.8-kilometre-long Beijing Central Axis connected royal palaces and marketplaces for common people in the past. Though time changes many things, the Central Axis has left a special feeling with many Chinese people.
Chinese professor Lyu Zhou said that when he walked around the Bell and Drum Towers, he could find peace in the busy city life. At a square between the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower, you can see people relaxing, cycling and playing games and even celebrating life events.
“This was one of our meeting places when we went on dates (约会). You could say that the towers have seen our love grow,” said a young couple who were taking wedding photos under the Bell and Drum Towers.
A number of visitors from other parts of the world have been amazed by the Beijing Central Axis too. The traveller Marco Polo (1254-1324), for example, wrote about what he saw along the Central Axis back in the Yuan Dynasty in The Travels of Marco Polo: “Up and down the city there are beautiful palaces... and fine houses in great numbers.” And Osvald Siren (1879-1966) from Sweden took many photos in Beijing back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These Western records have given people around the world a taste of its history.

31. What made Marco Polo feel unbelievable?
A. The relaxing life. B. The history of Yuan Dynasty.
C. People around Beijing. D. Beautiful buildings in ancient Beijing.
32. What’s the purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To call on us to remember Chinese history.

D
①Educators and business leaders have more in common than it may seem. Teachers want to prepare students for a successful future. Technology companies have an interest in developing a workforce with the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills needed to grow the company and improve the industry. How can they work together to achieve these goals? Play may be the answer.
②Paying attention to STEM skills is important, but the STEM skills can be improved when mixed with traditional, hands-on creative activities. This mix is proved to be the best way to prepare today’s children to be the builders of tomorrow. That is why technology companies are partnering with educators to bring back good, old-fashioned play.
③In fact, many experts think that the most important 21st-century skills are not specific (具体的) technologies or subject matter, but to creativity; skills like imagination, problem-finding and problem-solving, teamwork, patience and the ability to experiment and take risks. These are skills required when kids tinker (鼓捣小玩意). High-tech industries such as NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory have found that their best well-rounded problem solvers were great tinkers in their youth.
④There are advantages of doing things the way we did as children-building something, tearing it down, then building it up again. Research shows that given 15 minutes of free play, four-and-five-year-olds will spend a third of this time focusing on different activities. This type of play, especially with building toys, helps children discover and develop key rules in math.
⑤If play and building are important to 21st-century skill development, that’s really good news for two reasons: Children are born builders, makers, and creators, so developing 21st-century skills may be as easy as giving kids room to play, tinker and try things out, even as they grow older. Moreover, it doesn’t take 21st-century technology to develop 21st-century skills. This is especially important for under-resourced schools and communities. Taking whatever materials they have and tinkering with them is a simple way to develop those important “maker” skills. And anyone, anywhere, can do it.
33. What do you know about educators and business leaders?
A. They will play together. B. They have nothing in common.
C. They share the same goals. D. They will partner with each other.
34. What is the best way to prepare children for a successful future?
A. Developing specific technologies. B. Mixing STEM skills with DIY activities.
C. Paying attention to STEM skills D. Connecting to subject matter.
35. Why does the author mention NASA’s best well-rounded problem solvers in Paragraph 3?
A. To realize the advantages of skills. B. To show the findings of NASA.
C. To explain the ways of tinkering. D. To prove the importance of tinkering.
36. What’s the structure of this passage?
A. ①②/③④/⑤ B. ①②③/④/⑤ C. ①/②③④/⑤ D. ①/②/③④⑤
【答案】33. D 34. B 35. D 36. C
原文第①段结尾“How can they work together to achieve these goals? Play may be the answer.”以及第②段“That is why technology companies are partnering with educators to bring back good, old-fashioned play.”,这两处明确指出,教育工作者和商业领袖 (科技公司) 正在寻求合作,并且已经开始“建立伙伴关系”。因此,他们不是要一起玩,也不是没有共同点,更不仅仅是目标相同 (虽然目标有交集),最准确的描述是他们会“相互合作”。
【34题详解】
原文第②段“the STEM skills can be improved when mixed with traditional, hands-on creative activities. This mix is proved to be the best way to prepare today’s children to be the builders of tomorrow.”,“hands-on creative activities”即“动手的创造性活动”,与选项中的“DIY activities”对应,文章明确证明这种“混合”是为孩子未来成功做准备的“最佳方式”。
【35题详解】
原文第③段“These are skills required when kids tinker...High-tech industries such as NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory have found that their best well-rounded problem solvers were great tinkers in their youth.”,作者提到NASA的顶尖问题解决者年轻时都是“great tinkers”,是为了用实例证明“tinkering”(鼓捣小玩意)所培养的技能(创造力、解决问题能力等)非常重要,甚至能造就最优秀的人才。因此,目的是“证明tinkering的重要性”。
【36题详解】
分析全文结构,第①段提出问题“教育者和商业领袖如何合作?”并给出总观点“Play may be the answer.”。第②③④段展开论述:第②段解释“STEM + 传统动手活动”是最好的方式;第③段强调tinkering培养21世纪核心技能;第④段进一步说明“玩耍和搭建”对数学能力发展的好处。这三段都在具体论证“play/building”的重要性。

Ryrkaypiy, a village with about 700 people, is located in the north-east of Russia. Standing on the coast of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋), it has to face both the Arctic’s cold weather and wild animals like polar bears. Most of the area’s polar bears live a few miles away from Ryrkaypiy.
Only a few bears come near to the village now and then.
But last winter, over 50 polar bears went to Ryrkaypiy in search of food. The villagers were told to stay indoors to avoid danger. Now polar bears come to the village more often and in larger numbers than ever.
Although polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their life on the sea ice. The ice gives them a place where they can have a rest and catch fish. But as the temperature rises because of global warming, the bears have started to find their home disappearing.
Polar bears normally (通常地) go onto dry land in summer, and return to the ice when the ocean freezes again in autumn. But over the past few years, the ocean has frozen later and later, and the ice area has become smaller and smaller.

29. What does “It’s so Beijing” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. It’s the same as Beijing.
B. It’s much of Beijing style.
C. It’s in the middle of Beijing.
D. It’s the most beautiful in Beijing.
30. How does the young couple probably feel about the Central Axis according to their words?
A. Confident. B. Thankful. C. Worried. D. Sorry.
31. What made Marco Polo feel unbelievable?

C. People around Beijing. D. Beautiful buildings in ancient Beijing.
32. What’s the purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To call on us to remember Chinese history.
B. To describe the beauty of the Bell and Drum Towers.
C. To show that the Central Axis has long been known around the world.
D. To ask foreigners to learn more about the history of Beijing.

A. ①②/③④/⑤ B. ①②③/④/⑤ C. ①/②③④/⑤ D. ①/②/③④⑤

Unable to live on the ice, hungry polar bears have to look for food on land, including villages like Ryrkaypiy.
In some countries, polar bears are considered as endangered animals. If the earth becomes so warm that there is no longer enough sea ice for the bears to live on, there will probably be no polar bears.
